A Message from the President
By Harry Williams
The annual Foundation Gala -- this year
themed “Legends” was a fabulous evening.
Guests were treated to a most delicious
dinner, beautiful decorations and “celebrity
legends” including, Elvis Presley, Marilyn
Monroe and Joan Rivers, who greeted our
guests on the red carpet as they entered the
Country Club of Landfall. These special
“stars” used the cocktail hour to visit with
many of the attendees. Following the dinner
and the live auction, guests were treated to
the music of the Ntranze band creating a fun
evening which was enjoyed by 300 Landfall
residents and guests who made the gala a very
successful fundraiser. We would like to thank
CCL Executive Chef Kevin O’Connell and
Event Director Jamie Thompson and their
staffs for the sensational food and service.
I want to personally express the Foundation’s
appreciation to Joanne Rothermel and
Helen Brumbaugh for co-chairing the Gala
Committee. In addition, thanks to the tireless
group of residents who gave many hours
during the past several months working on
the Gala Committee-- listed on page 3. The
committee was responsible for all the various
details that are crucial to ensuring the success
of this event. Thanks to everyone who
donated their time and talent to make the
Gala an exceptional evening.
The financial results are always important and
of interest to our patrons. This year, thanks to
the outstanding effort of the Gala’s Sponsors
Committee, we increased our sponsorships
by eighteen percent which resulted in a record
contribution level of $160,500. I would like
to thank each sponsor for making it possible
for the Foundation to continue our financial
support to many local charities. The live and
Harry Williams - President
silent auctions produced $40,000, due to the
many outstanding items contributed by a large
number of donors. Finally, the ticket sales and
donations equaled $32,000 for total receipts
of $233,000. Offset by expenses, the total net
income came to a record $196,200.
In addition, I would like to thank all of our
2007 donors to the Foundation-- listed on pages
6 and 7. Since the Foundation’s inception in
1996, the grand total of giving to worthwhile
charitable causes in the Greater Wilmington
area exceeds $1,398,000. It’s only through the
continued generous support of our residents
that the mission of the Foundation is being
accomplished.

Grants Report

Landfall Foundation
The Landfall Foundation Grants Committee is accepting grant
applications up to and including June 18, 2008. As a result
of the generosity of Landfall residents and friends, we will
be able to award individual grants up to $6,000 to non-profit
organizations in the greater Wilmington area. Applications are
considered in the following categories: Art, Education, and
Health and Welfare.
Representatives of the Grants Committee have been invited
to the Cameron Art Museum, Airlie Gardens, Wilmington
Concert Association, Wilmington Youth Orchestra, New
Hanover Regional Medical Center and DREAMS of
Wilmington to view projects made possible by a 2007 grant.
DREAMS received one of the eighteen “2007 Coming up
Taller Awards” presented by Laura Bush at the White House.
This award recognizes outstanding community arts and
humanities programs that celebrate the creativity of youth.
They were chosen from a group of 350 nominees across the
country.
Members of the Grants Committee are: Co-chairs Gary
Gischel and Pam Bradley, Pete Clow, David Ellis, Judith E.
Malman, Dr. Bill McMillan, Loretta Meyers, Muffy Pepper, Dr.
Daniel Y. Patterson, and Deloris Rhodes.
Grant applications, including instructions and helpful
information, can be found on the Foundation website:
LandfallFoundation.org.
You may support the Foundation by attending Foundation
sponsored events or by making a donation in honor of, or in
memory of someone. With your past financial support we
look forward to another banner year.
Gary Gischel, Betty Gischel, Pam Bradley & Elizabeth Mottern,
Director of Donor Relations at Airlie Gardens, enjoy a tour of the
gardens featuring the addition of three historic markers donated
by the Landfall Foundation.
New Website

Landfall Foundation is currently working on a new website that
should be up sometime in June, 2008. The site will allow visitors to sign up and even pay for events, all on-line. The new site
will also detail all upcoming events in a simple, easy to access
format. Visit www.LandfallFoundation.org.

Gala
Committee
Members
By Joanne Rothermel
Reports were that the Landfall Foundation’s
“Legends” Gala guests saw many celebrities
cross the Gallery of Oriental Rugs’ red
carpet. Joan Rivers, Marilyn Monroe and
Bob Hope greeted an excited gathering of
Gala attendees. Tight security and paparazzi
were of course on hand. It was clearly the
place to be seen. Insiders reported that
Thalian’s Tom Briggs and his talented actors
may have played a role.
The Hollywood flair made for a fun-filled
memorable evening. Photographer Joshua
Curry helped to capture the memory in a
special portrait for each guest as they entered
the beautifully decorated Landfall Country
Club. Spotted among the crowd were
Albert Einstein, the Blues Brothers, Rhett
and Scarlett, Mozart, Dale Earnhardt, the
Flying Nun and Jack Nicklaus himself, who
seemed to feel quite at home. Excitement
was building throughout the evening as
Gala goers enjoyed cocktails and nibbles
while perusing the silent auction array. One
of the biggest surprises of the evening,
however, had to be the arrival of the king
himself, Elvis Presley.
As guests proceeded to beautifully-adorned
tables designed by Fiore’s Fine Flowers and
George Murray’s celebrity sketches, Chef
Kevin O’Connell and his staff presented a
4-star meal for all to enjoy. During dessert
the talented auctioneer Alex Sneed built up
the excitement for an animated live auction.
Proceeds for the evening exceeded past
events and more importantly will benefit
many worthy Wilmington organizations.
The lively sounds of Ntranze lured many to
the dance floor.
As the evening winded down and guests
headed home, many took away with
them their newly-acquired silent and live
auction items. The variety and desirability
of the items were the direct result of the
generosity of so many Landfall Foundation
supporters. Items auction off varied in
price from $50 to well into the thousands.
Items included gourmet dinners, trips and
vacation stays, artwork, jewelry, sports
memorabilia, lessons, spa treatments, and
much, much more.
But in addition, the special takeaways
were the great memories of an evening of
enjoyment of seeing friends, “celebrities,”
wonderful food and great danceable music.
Many who left at night’s end proclaimed
that the evening was great fun. What more
could one ask for an evening to remember?
The Gala Committee is grateful to the many
individuals who helped make the evening a
success, measured by fun and by the dollars
that were raised for a worthy cause, the
Landfall Foundation.

13th Annual
Foundation
Gala
By Shirley Heusel & Avery Wilmeth
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for
the 13th Annual Landfall Foundation
Gala, “Triskaidekaphobia,” Saturday,
April 25, 2009. Tris means “three,” kai
means “and,” deka means “ten” and we
all know what phobia means! Polish that
lucky coin, dust off your rabbit’s foot,
watch out for ladders and start planning
your tables now. On this night it is good
luck to have someone at your table born
on the 13th of any month. (Three at
your table triples your luck.). In keeping
with lucky numbers, there will be seven
live auction items offered this evening.
Details will be posted on the
Foundation’s website: www.
LandfallFoundation.org. For those who
like to dress in costumes, start your
research now to figure out if you want
to ward off bad luck (certain colors and
magical creatures), or make those who
are superstitious feel nervous (black cat
anyone?). A black cat crossing your path
is considered lucky except in the U.S.,
Spain and Belgium, where it is a white cat
who brings luck -- but not if you see it
at night.
For all you golfers, it is considered
good luck to set out for golfing on a
rainy day, but don’t open your umbrella
inside the house, that is extremely bad
luck. For gardeners, planting rosemary
by your front door will keep witches
away, but putting red and white flowers
together is considered bad luck. Getting
married? If the groom drops the ring
during the ceremony, the marriage is
doomed to failure. And one that is hard
to believe, ants are considered the final
reincarnation of fairies…so what kind of
fairies come back as fire ants!?!
Shirley Heusel and Avery Wilmeth are
co-chairs of this event. If you would
like to help out, contact either of us
at [email protected] or wilmetha@
bellsouth.net.
Many thanks to the generosity of our auction donors! Your support helped make this year’s Gala
a huge success!

By Shirley Heusel & Avery Wilmeth
Landfall Foundation
The Landfall Foundation is busy adding events to their
fundraising calendar for your enjoyment.
5K Run and 2K Fun Walk
On October 11th at 8:00 a.m., the Landfall Foundation will hold an inaugural 5K Road Race for older
teens and adults. Simultaneously, there will be a 2K (1.2 miles) Fun Walk for families and children. The
races will start and finish near the Sports Center, where families can linger afterwards to enjoy the activities
of the Fall Festival, sponsored by the Kenan Chapel. Awards will be presented at the finish of both
events and t-shirts will be available to commemorate this inaugural race for non-participants as well. Nikki
Johnson and Missy Orr are busy putting together a terrific event. There’s a great deal more information
to come on routes, sign-ups, prizes, which will be posted on our website, www.LandfallFoundation.org.
If you have any immediate questions, or have experience running this type of event and would like to
help, you can send a message to [email protected], or call Nikki at 256-7625. We are looking for
volunteers to help direct along the routes, sign-in runners and walkers, help with timing, numbers, etc.
Art Show
The Landfall Foundation is holding their annual art sale in the Dye Clubhouse on September 19, 20 and
21, 2008. This year the emphasis will be on showcasing our own Landfall artistic talent. This show is open
to all Landfall property owners and employees. Category I – Landfall Artists, is for those who consider
themselves artists. They will be able to submit four pieces, 2D or 3D, in addition to bin works. Category II
– Heritage Arts, is for those enjoy doing handcrafts, quilting, painting, drawing, hobby photography, etc., but
don’t consider themselves “artists.” They will be able to submit two pieces. Category III – Landfall Students
will be divided into age groups. This group will be able to submit two pieces, either 2D or 3D, in addition
to limited bin works. Age groups will be: Kindergarten - 2nd Grade; 3rd - 5th Grade; 6th - 8th Grade; 9th
- 11th Grade; 12th Grade - College.
There will be an entry fee and a commission on sales for participants, all benefiting the Foundation.
Admission to the show will be free. Viewers will vote for their favorite pieces and ribbons will be awarded
based on the voting. A reception and awards presentation will be held on Sunday, September 21, 2008.
If you would like to help with the show, be in the show, or both, email [email protected].
Information (prospectus and entry form) will soon be posted on our website: www.LandfallFoundation.org.
Superstition Kick-off Party
On November 1st at 8:00 p.m. until midnight, the Foundation is hosting a Halloween “Superstition”
Party at the Country Club of Landfall. This party is open to all Landfall residents, CCL Members, and
their guests. Lynn Hildreth and Mindy Gillis are organizing a casual night of dancing to the live music of
Black & Blue, light fare, and lots of specialty drinks. Details will be available soon on prizes for costumes,
raffle items and give-a-ways, so be sure to put it on your calendar now and start planning what to wear. If
you would like to help out or have any questions on this event, please send a message to LFHalloween@
bellsouth.net. And don’t forget to walk around your house three times backwards in a counter-clockwise
circle the night before Halloween to bring you good luck for the coming year, which originally started on
“All Saints” or “All Hallows” Day, (November 1st) on the old Celtic calendar.

Scholarship Report
By Bob Rothermel
Many of you may not realize that a large number of Landfall employees are students
who work in addition to going to school. The Landfall Foundation is proud to support
our working scholars through the Scholarship Program. All of the students listed below
maintain a grade point average of at least 2.5 and work an average of 15 to 20 hours per
week. These 18 students received scholarships for the fall semester. Please congratulate
them on their hard work and achievement the next time you see them and remember this
aspect of our Foundation’s work when you make your next contribution.

Foundation Scholarship recipients
It is clear that we all benefit from this program which
makes working at Landfall even more attractive. Our
CCL and COA managers are more selective in their
recruiting as a result of this unique benefit. The program
also provides the expectation of lower turnover because
returning scholars are rewarded with a higher level of
support over time. As we have noted previously, we share
the cost of scholarships with these two organizations.

Trea$urer’s Report
By Jack Erdody
Landfall Foundation
Thanks to you, the property owners of
Landfall, 2007 was another record year
of raising money to support nonprofit
charities in the greater Wilmington
area. Revenues from the annual gala,
Soirée Unique in April, an Art Show
in September, donations throughout
the year and other income totaled
$254,000, an increase of 1.2% from 2006.
Administrative expenses, at $11,590, were
only 4.6% of revenues, thanks to the
hard work of the many volunteers who
contributed their time and talents.
There was also a substantial increase in
funds distributed in 2007. Grants to 59
local area nonprofit organizations totaled
$211,785. This compares to $188,932 in
2006, an increase of 12%. In addition,
the Good Shepherd Center was given
$25,000 to upgrade its kitchen, and the
Frank H. Kenan Chapel received $5,000
to support its concert series. Finally,
the scholarship program provided over
$57,000 to 47 Country Club of Landfall
and Landfall CoA employee scholars.
The $299,000 in total disbursements,
24% more than 2006, was a new high.
2008 is starting off as another very good
year. The “Legends” gala in March was
an elegant, fun-filled event, providing
more than $196,000 (another milestone)
for the Foundation’s outreach programs.
The Foundation thanks the Landfall
property owners for their continued
generosity. One of our goals is to
maximize the percentage of Landfall
property owners who participate in
helping the Wilmington community in
which we live through the Foundation.
Hence, a gift of any amount, which is
fully tax-deductible, will be appreciated.
Also, many corporations have charitable
matching gift programs for employees
and retirees. We will be happy to work
with these organizations to obtain
matches to your donations.
A Contribution Form is included with
this newsletter for those who have not
given this year, or would like to add to
a previous gift. Also, remember that a
gift to the Foundation is a nice way to
honor someone on a special occasion, to
say thanks, or as a memorial. For your
convenience, the Foundation accepts
Visa and Master Card, and gladly accepts
donations of stocks or bonds. For
assistance with any transaction, call Jack
Erdody at 509-1788.
