Welcome to issue #7 - Road
Construction/Mining Equipment.
In this Letter from the
Editor, we are reproducing
parts of a speech made by
the Honourable Jim Carr,
Minister of Natural Resources, at the Prospectors &
Developers Association of
Canada (PDAC) International
Convention, Trade Show &
Investors Exchange that took
place in Toronto in March of
this year. In his speech, the
minister outlines four ways
the federal government is
prepared to aid the mining
sector and outlines Canada’s
involvement in Mission Innovation.
“I also want to talk about
how we can help you through
t hese d i f f icu lt t i mes to
position the industry for longterm success: investment in
innovation, ensuring regulatory certainty, building on
partnerships with Indigenous groups, and supporting
mineral exploration, because
without it, we won’t have the
mines of tomorrow.
“One of the first things we
did as a government was to
make Canada a partner in
Mission Innovation. The goal
of Mission Innovationis to
push clean energy innovation and R&D like never
before. It includes our early
commitment of an additional
$200 million a year to support
innovation and clean technologies in natural resource
sectors.
“We also have to ensure
certainty in the regulatory
process, because nothing
scares investors more than
uncertainty. We quickly developed a transition process
for reviewing and assessing
major resource projects that
are currently under review.
That’s why we are engaging
with you ahead of a full review of how Canada conducts
environmental assessments.
The faster we restore public
confidence in the regulatory
system, the sooner we will see

broad support for large-scale
sustainable resource projects.
“And we want to support
exploration. We plan to continue geo-mapping to support
exploration for energy and
minerals, particularly in
the North and to encourage the next generation of
geo-science knowledge and
techniques.

modular solutions from Telsmith.
There are numerous avenues for minerals processing equipment, unless your OEM is truly
a partner. A partner that can provide a full-scale modular solution with design, engineering,
manufacturing, site planning, and construction. Telsmith is that partner in the aggregate &
mining industry. Partnering with someone who knows the industry and equipment yields a
solution that will impact the performance of your site.

A Great Exodus
The heav y equipment
population of A lberta is
about to seriously decrease
as more t han 5,000 machines, trucks, and other
equipment items prepare
to depart the province. This
great exodus is the result
of the lack of work in the
province combined with the
largest Ritchie Bros.’ Canadian auction ever, which
took place April 26-30 at
the company’s Edmonton
permanent auction site in
Nisku, Alberta.
At that auction, Ritchie
Bros. sold 10,200+ equipment items and trucks for
CA$240+ million (US$191+
million) at the 200-acre site,
making it the company’s
largest Canadian auction
ever and the second-largest
auction in company history.
According to Randy Wall,
President, Canada, Ritchie
Bros., when Alberta’s economy was strong, about 80%
of everything sold at Alberta
auctions remained in the
province. At the latest Edmonton auction, only 46%
of that equipment sold to
Alberta buyers.
More t han 1,100 compa n ies sold equ ipment
in the auction, including
Newcom Earthmovers Ltd.
LOADSTAR
“Leading In Trailing”
Ritchie Bros.’ largest Canadian auction ever set new company records for
online sales, bidders, and number of sellers. The auction saw a large increase
in the number of vocational trucks sold.
The Brooks, Alberta-based
earthworks construction
contractor sold 400+ items
in the Edmonton auction as
part of a complete dispersal.
“Ritchie Bros. is a one-stop
shop—they know the market
and they have resources no
one can touch,” said Harold
Ward, President and owner
of Newcom Earthmovers.
“We’ve been buying and selling here since we started
the company 12 years ago.
With the changing landscape here in Alberta we
thought it would be a good
time for us to sell and we’re
happy with the result.”
Of all the equipment sold
at the Edmonton auction,
9.6% (1,346 units) was classified as oil, gas, power,
and utility. At the Ritchie
Bros. April 2015 Edmonton
auction, only 6.9% had the
same classification. That
means the percentage of
machines sold at auction
with this classification has
increased by 39%, which is a
little more than the increase
from the Ritchie Bros. April
2014 Edmonton auction.

auction is down by less than
1% (5 units) compared to last
year and only makes up 6.4%
of total equipment items
versus 7.6% of the total items
sold at the Ritchie Bros. April
2015 Edmonton auction. The
moderation in units sold
over the two years shows the
maturity of the downturn in
mining versus the relatively
new downturn in oil and gas,
and it may even be pointing
to a bottom in the mining
industry.
Wall advises equipment
employed exclusively for
drilling and exploring for oil
and natural gas has seen a
“significant” price drop. On
the other hand, the auction
“saw strong pricing on motor
scrapers, crawler tractors,
wheel loaders, highway
transport, and gravel hauling equipment,” said Brian
Glenn, Senior Vice President, Ritchie Bros.
Although the sale of oil
and gas equipment has increased, that category of
equipment wasn’t the largest increase in sales. Both
trailers (51%) and vocational
trucks (41%) surpassed it in
the%age of units sold.
The lifting and material
handling equipment category is the only equipment
category to be down significantly (27%) compared to
the Ritchie Bros. April 2015
Edmonton auction.
Approx imately 84% of
the equipment was sold to
Canadian buyers (by dollar
value), which shows that
there is strength in other
parts of the country.
With a record number of
sellers and so much quality
equipment up for sale, it is no
wonder that the Edmonton
auction attracted 16,700+
bidders from 55 countries—
also a new company record,
surpassing the previous record by 19%.
More than 6,150 people
(37%) registered to bid in
person, while 10,550+ people
(63%) registered to bid online—both of which are new
company records. More than
CA$140 million (US$111+
million) of equipment was
sold to online buyers (58%)—
also a new company record.

Truck Drivers! Transform & Roll Out
Western Star Launches Extreme Duty Truck that Transforms to Multiple Configurations in Minutes
Western Star Truck Sales,
Inc., announced its new Extreme Duty (XD) Offroad
package and the launch of
the MBT-40 Transformer
chassis.
Western Star builds some
of the toughest and most
durable vocational trucks in
the world today and is one of
the fastest growing brands
in North America. However,
they also offer an off-road
product that competes with
the articulated and ridged
frame markets.
The Western Star XD Offroad package is engineered
specifically for extremely
rugged environments and
is available on both the 4900
and 6900 models. Vehicles
spec’d with the XD Offroad
package deliver driver safety
and comfort while providing
customers with a low cost
per ton product for off-road
applications. Western Star
plans to open the XD Offroad
package up to other models
in the future.
The 6900XD Offroad MBT40, dubbed the Multi-Body
Transformer for its ability to
quickly change from one fully
functional in cab controlled
body application to another,
is the first XD Offroad series
offering from Western Star
and a new concept for offroad equipment markets.
Using a Palfinger G68
hooklift which has a lifting
capacity of 68,000lbs and a
new transformer package,
the MBT-40 gives customers
greater utilization of their
chassis. It is designed to replace the need for having
multiple pieces of dedicated
off-road equipment on a job
site that sit for long periods
of time when they are not
needed. With this new product, extremely complex and
heavy capacity bodies can
be changed over and back
to work quickly and easily.
The unit is equipped with a
generic in-cab control system
and a self-adapting hydraulic system that also allows
the operators to quickly and
easily swap the controls of
multiple body applications
as well. The MBT-40 features
multiple hydraulic air and
electrical connections that
allow it to connect and power
a variety of body needs from
powerful flow controlled hydraulic motors and pumps to
heavy high flow tip cylinders.
“The MBT-40 package
is a game changer in construction applications for its
ability to be multiple pieces
of equipment in one chassis,”
said John Tomlinson, XD and
Vocational Sales Manager,
Western Star. “The development of this platform was all
about finding better economic ways of filling needs for our
customers. Offroad chassis
equipment can be expensive
to buy and maintain and new
emissions levels are making
the investment even more
costly.”
Continued Tomlinson: “By
maximizing the operation
time, customers can have
the equipment they need
always for when it is required.
Mining, quarry and off-road
construction industries are
looking for better solutions
right now and we have the
answers for them with this
new product.”
“Working with Western
Star on this open platform
concept product has been
great. CARCO Industries is
very experienced in mining
and off-road fuel and service
products along with carrying
the PALFINGER crane lines,”
said Charlie Schimmels,
Sales Manager, CARCO In-

dustries. “This combination
of experience and product
along with the rugged design and carrying capacity
of the XD40 Offroad chassis offered by Western Star
makes the MBT-40 package
a very unique product. With
commodity prices down and

WF Botkin Builds Bridges with SDLG
Capital management is the
hallmark of any successful
construction company. Investments in equipment are
expensive, and every machine must generate return
on its investment. An expensive machine left idling can
become a financial albatross
for a small business.
It was this notion that
led Regina, Saskatchewan,
-based WF Botkin Construction to invest in an SDLG
wheel loader. Though the
company has several material handling sites in its region,
it only needed a machine to
work a few days a week on a
new bridge project. A large
outlay on a premium wheel
loader that wouldn’t be in
continuous use would not
have made financial sense.
“We recently won a project to replace some bridges
in Regina, and we needed
a wheel loader to support
our operations,” said Clair
Botkin, Vice President of the
company. “We’re primarily
moving barricades around
the jobsites and loading materials, so we didn’t need a
wheel loader working constantly. We didn’t need the
features of a more expensive
loader for our work, either.”
Bot k in broug ht his
needs to Regina, Saskatchewa n-based Red head
Equipment. The two companies had had a relationship
for years, so Botkin trusted
the dealer to suggest a machine that would be a good
fit and to then support the
wheel loader through its lifecycle. Redhead suggested
the SDLG LG959.
The LG959 has an oper-
ating weight of 17,200 kg
(38,250 pounds). It features
a Tier 3 Deutz engine with
168 kW (224 hp) and 777 lb-ft
of torque, ZF transmission
and axles, wet disc brakes,
a hydraulic quick coupler
and third function hydraulics, a modern fit and finish
with high visibility, and an
operator-friendly cab, says
the manufacturer.
For its first project, the
SDLG loader is building a
box culvert bridge. There,
the machine is moving bar- This SDLG LG959 is the right solution for WF Botkin Construction who

addition to an expanded parts
warehouse, product support
and a technology showroom,
the building is designed to be
expandable for future growth.
In fact, the building design is
the first in a series of similar
facilities Nortrax will be constructing in North America.

Be Freed from the Continuous Maintenance Associated with Impact Crushing
“Check da i ly; w rench
weekly.” That is a familiar
phrase to those who operate
and/or maintain an impact
crusher.
The apron inside an impact crusher often includes
wear plates, which receive
a lot of impact from incoming material to be recycled
(stone, concrete, asphalt,
etc.). Because of the abuse
these parts of the machine
experience each use, the
wear plates need to be inspected on a daily basis, and
operators or technicians
must adjust or change out
at least one of them on a
weekly basis.
No machine t y pe gets
wrench work more frequently than an impact crusher.

impactor crusher owners
regularly experience regardless of brand.
Now, the idea that the
continuous maintenance
associated w it h i mpact
crushing is unavoidable is
so pervasive that people in
the crushing industry have
just come to accept it.
To solve the solution, wear
part specialist, Peter Creighton, Creighton Rock Drill
(CRD), saw an opportunity
in a wear part designed for
grading applications. Based
out of Mississauga, Ontario,
CRD represents the Canadian manufacturer Black
Cat. Who manufacturers
grader blades composed of
Boron Steel.
Creighton noticed that
the Boron blades were more
durable and longer lasting
than blades made of T1/AR40
steel, so he considered perhaps it could work similarly
in impactor aprons.
He teamed up with Dan
Maynard of Cannington
Group, based out of Markham, Ontario. They designed
one wear part the length of
three smaller wear parts provided by the OEM (original
equipment manufacturer).

Peter’s Crushing is very happy with the product, and are now using it for
their third season.
These Boron wear plates are composed of a more durable steel and are
a greater width (three inches) than the plates provided by the original
equipment manufacturer (OEM).
more rigidity,” says Creighton. They also increased the
thickness to three inches
from the OEM’s two inches.
Creighton sent the designs
to Black Cat Blades, based
out of Edmonton, Alberta.
Black Cat Blades manufactured the part at their plant
in Edmonton, and Maynard
installed it into his machine.
“I went to inspect the wear
plate after one month,” says
Creighton. “It looked like
they hadn’t seen much work,
though Maynard ensured
me that it had.”
Creighton began designing wear parts for aprons
for other impactor crusher
brands. Then CRD sold some
to Priestly Demolition for use
in their impactors.
“Now, w it h t he Boron
plate, we use it for the whole
year; we just flip it once half
way through the season. We
don’t perform continuous
maintenance anymore,” says
Wray. “And, the Boron plate
solved our cracking issue.”
The spare third apron that
the company owns has been
sitting in a company shed for
two years.
Peter’s Crushing, based
out of Stevensville, Ontario,
has been using the Boron
wear parts on his impactor
for a few years now. “It costs
almost the same price as the
three OEM wear plates that it
replaces,” says Scott Cebrynski, Operation Managers
Peter’s Crushing. “And, it
lasts much longer, as well as
decreases our service time.
We also use the Boron plate
as side liners and spill plates
giving us much longer wear
times.”
CR D has now reverse
engineered the wear parts
for a number of impactor
crusher OEMs, including
Lippman, Pegson, Eagle, and
Universal.
Although they have been
touring the product at trade
shows for a few years, this
time-saving solution is still
largely a secret among impact crushers in Ontario.
“We are working with our
customers to provide reliable
solutions for impact crushing,” says Creighton. “What I
have discovered is that most
impactors are designed so
that they can be competitively sold. This means that
the internal wear plates are
made with inexpensive steel
that merely address the immediate need. By using a
better quality steel my customers get to experience
longer wear life. As a result
they crush for longer with
less repair requirements.”

ROAD CONSTRUCTION
New Brunswick Key Transportation Corridor
Construction Project Enters Next Phase
The next phase of construction will begin soon on the
Route 11 Twinning Project
in New Brunswick.
Infrastructure upgrades
began last summer, and will
focus on promoting economic growth, improving
mobility in the Shediac region of New Brunswick, and
increasing safety for all those
who use the highway system.
The $60-million, three-year
project will see an overhaul
of on-and off-ramps and
the twinning of 6.8 km (11
miles) of highway from Route
15 to the south side of the
Shediac River. The federal
government’s share of $27
million is coming from the
New Building Canada Fund
while the province is kicking
in the remaining $33 million.
The total cost of twinning
Route 11 between Route 15
and Miramichi has been estimated at about $1 billion.
Improvements to Route 11
will be completed in phases
over the next 10 years, with
the most heavily travelled
sections to be twinned and
ing highway safety.’’
He says strategic infrastructure investment is a
cornerstone of the government’s plan to create jobs and
stimulate New Brunswick’s
economy. “As part of the National
Highway System, Route 11 is
a key transportation corridor
for many businesses from
all regions of our province,’’
says Melanson. “The section
of highway being twinned in
the Shediac area has a traffic
count of about 19,000 vehicles
per day with seasonal peaks
exceeding this volume. These
upgrades to Route 11 will
facilitate the movement of
people and goods making our
businesses more productive
and competitive and improving highway safety.’’
In addition to the sustained
economic benefits, Melanson says New Brunswick
companies will see from reduced shipping times and
vehicle operation costs, the
direct and indirect impacts
from construction work are
expected to generate $37.2
of approximately 1.3 km for
the twinning of Route 11
and modifications to Route
134 Interchange. The work
includes signing, lighting,
and construction of the new
southbound lanes; three new
ramps; and a small portion
of a service road (temporary
ramp connection).
The work will also involve
“Strategic infrastructure investment is a cornerstone of our
government’s plan to create a climate for job creation and
stimulate economic growth...’’
- Transportation & Infrastructure Minister Roger Melanson
the rest of the route upgraded
as funding becomes available.
“Strategic infrastructure
investment is a cornerstone
of our government’s plan to
create a climate for job creation and stimulate economic
growth,’’ Transportation and
Infrastructure Minister Roger
Melanson told Equipment
Journal in a written statement. “As announced in the
Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s
2016-17 Capital Budget, our
government will continue
to invest in priority projects
such as the twinning of Route
11. We will invest $23 million
this fiscal year to continue
work on Route 11 from Route
15 to Shediac River. These
upgrades to Route 11 will
facilitate the movement of
people and goods making our
businesses more productive
and competitive and improv-
million in GDP and approximately 590 jobs. In the 2016/17 fiscal year,
the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure
(DTI) will tender six additional contracts in this project
area. One has been tendered
and the remainders are anticipated to be tendered by
June 2016. Tenders 1-5 will
be completed in fall 2016 and
Tender 6 will be completed
in fall 2017.
Tender 1 is a contract for
the paving to the top of asphalt
concrete D of approximately
3.3 km of southbound lanes
for the twinning of the Route
11. As well, the work includes
the grading and paving of a
four to two lane transition
at the northern limit of the
contract.
Tender 2 calls for the
grading and paving to the
top of asphalt concrete D
temporary connections, two
detours, and the decommissioning of seven of the
existing Route 134 ramps.
Tender 3 includes the grading to the top of aggregate
sub-base of approximately 1.6
km of main lanes for the twinning of Route 11. The work
includes construction of both
northbound and southbound
lanes as well as portions of
three ramps, Route 133 and
the new service road. Two
culverts necessary for the
crossing of watercourse will
require provisions for fish
passage.
Tender 4 is for the grading
and paving for the widening
of Route 15 eastbound and
westbound lanes to accommodate the future Route 11
merging lanes while Tender
5 consists of the paving the
Route 11/133 interchange
and service road.
Tender 6, meanwhile, is a
two-year contract to construct
the Route 11/15 over-pass. A
portion of the new Route 11,
from Route 134 interchange
to the Southside of the Shediac River, is expected to open
this fall.
According to information
provided by DTI, Phase 1
included twinning 6.8 kilometres of highway from Route
15 to the south side of the
Shediac River, construction of
one new interchange, as well
as a new grade separation
and modifications to three
other existing interchanges.
A total of four tenders were
awarded in 2015 including
three grading projects and a
structure for the new Route
11/Route 133 interchange.
The New Building Can-
ada Fund will provide $53
billion over the next decade
in infrastructure money to
provincial, territorial, and
municipal infrastructure.
Over the next 10 years,
New Brunswick will see approximately $866 million in
federal funding, including
almost $394 million under
the New Building Canada
Fund.

Half-Lane Cold Planer Features Automated
Grade & Slope Control
The half-lane Roadtec
RX-600e milling machine
is now equipped with the
Ace Grade and Slope Control System. The Automated
Control of Elevation (ACE)
System from Roadtec uses a
network of grade and slope
sensors combined with one
central microcontroller that
is designed to automate the
elevation of the milling machine. The RX-600e features a
415-kW (620-hp) Tier 4 Cummins engine, model QSX15.
The machine is designed to
be light and manoeuvreable
for urban situations.
The cold planer is available
with four-track assemblies or
optional three-track assemblies. Milling machines with
three-track suspensions are
expected to be more manoeuvreable in the cut and
lower in weight, while fourtrack machines are designed
to provide greater tractive
effort and flotation.
The machine is designed
to allow contractors to cut up
to 330 mm (13 inches) deep
with a width of 1.9-2.2 metres
(6.3-7.2 feet). A two-stage
front load-out conveyor, with
60-degree swing to either
side, is intended to provide
ample loading capacity. The mainframe is con-
structed from A656 grade
80 steel, which is said to offer
twice the yield strength of
mild steel found in many
machines on the market.
Steering of this machine is
performed from the tops of
the front legs using steering
keys that are replaceable. This
design requires no linkage
under the primary conveyor
between the front legs. Four
steering modes include, crab,
coordinated, rear only, and
front only.
The cut material conveyor
features pulleys designed to
be self cleaning, releasing wet
material from the conveyors
to increase efficiency. Canvas
conveyor covers also comes
standard, designed to provide
better access.
The cutter housing and
drum are modular, allowing it
to be interchanged with other
width housing and drums.
The inside walls of the cutter
housing are fully lined with
replaceable chromium-clad
wear plates.
Specialty cutter drum designs are available from wide
spaced excavating patterns
to fine spaced micro milling
patterns as well as double hit
drums which are designed to
improve production without
sacrificing quality of cut.
Multiple tooling options are
available including Sollami,
Kennametal, and Keystone
Quick Change systems.
Roadtec can design custom
drums to meet user applications.

MT 3000-2i from Vögele Offers Exceptional Performance in New-Design MTVs
The newly designed MT
3000-2i material transfer
vehicle from Vögele (shown
at World of Asphalt 2016)
offers exceptional perform-
ance in material transfer
vehicles for asphalt paving.
This machine is designed
with the contractor in mind
for unmatched productivity,
exceptionally low operating
costs and ultimate maneuverability.
This high-performance
unit weighs 25,000 kg (56,000
pounds) with 18 tons of storage capacity is heavy enough
to get the job done, but portable enough to haul on most
roads and bridges. Its low

profile gives it a low centre
of gravity, and exclusive innovations give it an edge in
performance and productivity that the conventional
products don’t have.
The MT 3000-2i can move
1,300 tons per hour, and active remixing is achieved
by two 400-mm (16-inch)
diameter conical augers in
the receiving hopper. Both
primary and secondary con-
absorb heat from the hotter
surrounding mix. This passive remixing insert costs
nothing in terms of energy
or maintenance; in fact it
enhances a lower cost of total
ownership.
The receiving hopper empties in advance of the next
dump, a rear-tilting front of
the hopper will move stray
material toward the conical augers. Conical augers

veyor belts are 1.09 metres
(43 inches) wide, and are
heated to keep material
from sticking, and eliminate
“warm up” loads. The secondary conveyor can swing
55 degrees to the left or right.
Heated scrapers also keep
the belts constantly clean
with a minimum of fuss.
Material transfer vehicles
eliminate contact between
truck and paver, resulting
in smoother mats. They also
fight thermal and material segregation. Essentially,
they provide non-contact
paving between truck and
paver, and surge capacity
to allow the paving process
to continue during truck
exchanges.
More efficiency is achieved
by providing active remixing
in its receiving hopper, and a
passive remixing in a 17- or
22-ton “receiving insert” in
the paver hopper. A grate
system in the receiving insert breaks up cold crusts
as they enter the insert, allowing smaller clumps to
themselves minimize endof-load and start-of-load
segregation.
Its extremely eff icient
feed system has an auto
feed function that will automatically slow or shut down
feeding when the paver hopper insert is filled, while a
maximum delivery override
switch will deliver material
at maximum throughput for
instant filling of the hopper
insert. Moreover, a propel
system featuring a unique
auto distance control keeps
the feeder at a pre-set distance from the paver, so
the operator can focus only
on steering and the trucks
dumping in front. In essence,
the paver electronically
pushes the feeder.
Also, a collision bar on the
paver insert will halt Vögele
pavers if they get too close to
the MTV. The water-cooled
Deutz engine features 161
kW (215 hp) and is Tier 4
interim emissions compliant.

Gomaco Introduces the World’s Most Intelligent Multi-Application Paver
Gomaco has introduced
the new 3300 multi-application slipform paver at bauma
2016. The 3300 features extreme steering capabilities
with Smart Leg and Track
Positioning, and a Smart
Telescoping Mold mounting
system for paving from the
right side or left side of the
paver. The original GT-3300
has been re-engineered with
the latest in technology with
the G+ control system.
G o m a c o ’s 3 3 0 0 w a s
specifically designed for
right-side and left-side pour
capabilities. It features a
symmetrical design that
makes it easy to pave from
either side. Its U-shaped
operator’s platform provides
a complete view of the entire
paving operation from anywhere on the platform. The
control console easily slides
from side-to-side to accommodate the direction of the
pour. The 3300’s design includes a 6.1-metre (20-foot)
long conveyor with four-way
hydraulic positioning which
allows perfect placement of
the concrete into the hopper
on either side of the 3300.
The four-way positioning includes pivoting tilt, pivoting
swing, longitudinal slide,
and sideshifting. The conveyor hydraulically folds to
reduce the overall transport
length of the paver.
The 3300’s Extreme Steering is accomplished with
hydraulic rotational drives
on the tracks and G+ controls. The 3300’s two front
legs are mounted on parallelogram-style pivot arms
and the rear leg has power
slide for positioning. Their
smart leg positioning is

Wirtgen W 220, is supplied
with a 7.2-foot (2.18-metre)
drum, but at World of Asphalt
it was shown with an 8.2-foot
(2.5-metre) drum.
The W 220 provides the
milling width and depth of
the heavier W 250i (Wirtgen’s
biggest and most powerful
mill) but with a lower weight
that enables it to more easily
meet legal weight load limits.
The W 220 will mill up to 14
inches (356 mm) deep, at a
nominal milling width of 87
inches (2.20 metres). The W
220 can produce up to 900
tons per hour of reclaimed
asphalt pavement.
The Wirtgen W 220 can
remove asphalt layers over
a foot deep (a nd toug h
portland cement concrete
pavements as well) at a high
advance rate. Three different milling drum speeds
can be adjusted from the
operator’s platform: high
speed for large-scale milling of thin lifts, medium for
standard surface courses,
and low speed for optimized
fuel consumption and low
cutting tool wear.
In addition to removing
complete pavement sections in a single pass, the
W 220 permits individual
layers to be removed very
economically. The intelligent W IDRI V E machine
management system and
the three selectable milling
drum speeds keep operating
costs exceptionally low for a
cold milling machine in this
performance class.

Although highway planning
was ongoing, the construction of the 401 was postponed
by WW II. It ramped up postwar and by the 1950’s the

so-called ‘Toronto bypass’

Ever expanding, McNamara
took on several construction
projects in the US, as well as
the building of major airports
and dams throughout Canada. However, by mid-1960
it had ceased operations.
Nonetheless, it had been an
important player and innovator in several facets of
the industry.
The Caterpillar DW 15
scraper was introduced in
1954 to supplant the DW
10 model made from 1941
onward. Powered by a Caterpillar diesel of some 112 kW

rated as 11- to 12-cubic-yard
heaped capacity. By the end
of its run in 1960, it had been
updated in both horsepower
and capacity. During this
same period, Caterpillar had
introduced the DW 20 and
the DW 21 scraper models
that became common place
on earthmoving jobs.

Intelligent Compaction System Gives Contractors
Real-Time Material Stiffness Readings
Atlas Copco’s easy-touse intelligent compaction
system gives contractors
real-time material stiffness
readings to ensure superior
soil and asphalt compaction. This increases operator
productivity, which saves
contractors significant time
and money. And, its touch
screen capability makes the
system user friendly and convenient.
Atlas Copco featured
its Dyn@Lyzer intelligent
compaction system on the
CC6200 asphalt roller March
22-24 during World of Asphalt
in Nashville, Tennessee.
Dyn@Lyzer uses a global
navigation satellite system,
such as GPS, to track the
number of completed passes and the precise position
of the roller at all times. The
unit’s drum-mounted accelerometer measures the
surface’s relative material stiffness and uses Evib
readings to give operators
immediate material stiffness
results from within the cab
and help minimize the number of passes.
When using Dyn@Lyzer
on asphalt, the system uses
two temperature sensors, one
at each end of the roller, to
register the surface temperature of the asphalt, giving
operators consistent, relative
stiffness readings. In addition, Atlas Copco’s intelligent
compaction system helps
contractors detect any loose
materials so they can perform
additional passes to reach
the right compaction. This
minimizes the risk of production-related quality defects,
which are time consuming
and costly to remediate.
Contractors can use the
intuitive system on a tablet
to set project parameters and
view compaction data. Once
they achieve the optimal level
of compaction, the program
alerts the operator, so he or
she can stop and reduce the
risk of over compaction,
which can affect the integrity
of the material and damage
the roller. The data storage
also means contractors have
the results readily available
to print off or display for Federal Highway Department
inspections.
Dyn@Lyzer is available on
Atlas Copco CC2200 through
CC6200 asphalt rollers and
CA2500 through CA6500 soil
rollers. For additional convenience, contractors can get
free on-site training from an
Atlas Copco representative
or dealer.
The Atlas Copco Dyn@Lyzer intelligent compaction system is available
on CC2200 through CC6200 asphalt rollers. It simplifies compaction by
using the program’s real time data to alert the operator when the required
material stiffness is reached.

need to worry about manual corrections with Bomag
steering control.
An infinitely adjustable
directed oscillator system
on the BW154ACP offers
automatic measurement
and control. The dynamic
stiffness value EVIB in MN/
m² is determined as a reference or comparison value
for compaction progress. The
interaction between asphalt
and vibrating mass during
compaction is recorded by
acceleration transducers on
the front drum and controlled
by a high-speed control circuit. This provides automatic
adjustment of the compaction
force to match the stiffness of
the layer being compacted.
The current EVIB value [MN/
m2 ] affects the compaction
intensity via the effective
amplitude. The special EVIB
feature has been programmed
with target values for typical
compaction jobs, such as base
layers, binders, and different
surface layers.
BOMAG 211 D-40
The Bomag 211 D-40 is
designed for medium- to
heavy-duty compaction work.
D-series models are suitable
for the compaction of hydraulically bound materials,
sand, gravel, crushed rock,
semi-cohesive soils and rock.
PD models are well suited to
heavy cohesive soils with high
water contents.
The conventional smooth
drum-key features tapered
edges for a smooth surface.
Double scrapers keep drums
clean. Contact scrapers are
available for those really
tough jobs. PD models with
pad foot drums are suitable
for cohesive soils. The cleverly
shaped pad foot penetrates
deep into the soil and imparts
a powerful kneading effect.
The wide clearance between
drum and frame prevents
clogging, whilst the scraper
tooth profile minimizes friction losses. Tooth caps are
made from wear-resistant
manganese steel and can be
replaced separately. Smooth
drums can be easily converted
to pad foot roller drums using
a segmented shell. This significantly expands the roller‘s
scope of use. The three-part
shape allows full adjustment
and easy assembly. The segments can be quickly fitted
without having to dismantle
the frame.
Drum drive and no-spin
differential are standard
features. No-spin means automatic locking up to 100%. If
one wheel lifts, the other still
drives the roller forwards. The
driver can control the torque

A central control and display unit, the BOP (Bomag Operation Panel),
continuously informs the roller operator about the dynamic stiffness of the
material and the compaction progress; it also shows information about
surface temperature, travel speed, exciter frequency and effective amplitude.
Single drum rollers play a key role in construction engineering. They create the
sound basis, in every sense, on which further work rests. There is no room for
compromise, so Bomag single drum rollers consistently exceed the targets
of modern project specifications by the use of high performance technology.

Digging into Excavator Selection for Mining:
5 Ways to Evaluate your Next Purchase
Whether you’re mining on
the mountains, at a quarry
or underground, matching
the proper excavator to the
project is critical to achieving
maximum productivity at
the lowest cost per ton.
“Fe w m ac h i ne s w ork
harder on mining jobs than
excavators. These machines
are digging and shovelling
overburden or breaking up
rock in some of the most
abrasive environments on
earth,” says Doosan Excavator Product Specialist Shane
Reardon.
W hen you’re t hink ing
about supplementing production with an excavator, it’s
important to meet some key
objectives including utilization, machine capacity, and
loading cycles. In addition
to productivity, it’s critical
to evaluate machine durability and serviceability to
be successful and profitable
in challenging conditions.
And, it’s reassuring to know
that an acquisition will be
strengthened with flexible
finance options, extended
warranty support, and the
backing of a trained and responsive dealership.
To be certain every important base is being covered
in the purchasing process,
Reardon offers the following
five factors to consider when
specifying an excavator to
perform mining and quarry
work.
size class are typically
best designed to handle
the rigors of aggregate
mining jobsites, Reardon
says buyers need to identify the tasks the machine
will be performing and
the material that needs
removed. Will the excavator perform a single job
or multiple jobs? Will the
tasks it’s needed for today
be the only work it performs during its lifetime
in your fleet? The answers
to those questions can
help define the role of
a new machine in your
fleet.
“Leveraging excavator
attachments to perform
specific mining or quarry
tasks can significantly increase utilization rates, while
also increasing functionality. With several different
types of buckets and specialty attachments available,
excavator capabilities can
be maximized to complete a
variety of projects in mines
and quarries,” Reardon says.
Right now, you may need to
dedicate an excavator to digging with a rock, heavy-duty,
or general-purpose bucket.
However, excavators that
are set up with t wo-way
hydraulics and a thumb or
grapple can efficiently pick
up those pieces in quarry
projects. Likewise, the power
of excavators combined with
the versatility of high-impact
»» Fit the fleet. While excav- breakers allows operators
ators in the 33- to 44-ton to perform a growing var-
iety of tasks in mines and
quarries. Those include
primary breaking and secondary breaking or “oversize
breaking” of blasted rock to
sizes more manageable for
crushers.
»» B e p r o d u c t i v e a n d
profitable. Excavator productivity can be defined
a number of ways, but
some of the most common metrics are machine
horsepower, hydraulics,
and digging and lifting
capacity. Since an excavator’s bucket is typically
its biggest revenue generator, its size and capacity
are naturally important
factors for productivity, but so is the type of
material. Once you’ve
determined daily production targets, calculate
the density of the material
and match it to the size
and capacity of a bucket,
and then look at the size
of the machine needed to
complete the job.
Machines designed for
finish production in a quarry
or mine are often working
with aggregate ranging from
fine sand to large rock. Due
to these varying material
densities, Reardon says it’s
important to spec the bucket
based on the heaviest material it will handle.
“Calculate for the high-end
density values of the material
in the work environment.”
Materials like sand that ab-
sorb moisture will be heavier
wet than dry. Additionally,
clean, washed aggregate
densities can vary greatly
from base fill densities.
Machines that are engineered with a system of
different power modes can
help operators establish
proper levels for mining
or quarry operations. This
capability can provide appropriate levels of power
and performance for tough
d igg ing cond it ions a nd
truck loading tasks, and also
protect engine systems and
structural components from
stress.
»» Partner with the right
h au l i n g e qu ipment .
A primary goal of any
excavator owner is to
accomplish tasks and
reduce loading cycles
for maximum efficiency,
but it’s easy to mismatch
equipment. One of the
best ways to ensure desired production is to
pair an excavator to its
hauling equipment, so
that neither the excavator
operator nor the hauling
truck operator will have
long waits between loads.
“A b u c k e t p r o p e r l y
matched to its material and
equipped with adequate lift
capacity and dump height
could reduce the number
of passes needed to f i l l
trucks,” says Reardon. For
example, industry consensus is t y pically bet ween
six and 10 passes to fill an
average dump truck with
an excavator. For maximum
production, the number of
passes to load should be between three and five.
»» Determine a machine’s
durabilit y. Excavator
du rabi lit y in m in ing
environments is a key
point to be evaluated.
Long carriage designs can
enhance performance in
heavy digging and lifting operations. Look for
sturdy frames, reinforced
upper structures, plate
thickness and internal
gussets inside an excavator’s boom and arm
for maximum rigidity.
One-piece cast bosses for
pin-up points and hard
wear discs can increase
the overall durability of
the bucket area, improve
breakout forces and contribute to a longer life for
your workgroup in tough
applications. Excavator
models that incorporate guards and shields
designed to protect the
excavator’s undercarriage
(and protective methods
for hose routings and
components) can contribute significantly to
durability in challenging
mining environments.
»» Seek dedicated dealership support. Beyond
the machine itself, the
support of a f ull-serv ic e de a ler s h ip c a n
help companies evaluate the overall cost of
ownership by taking a
comprehensive look at
a purchase past the machine’s initial acquisition
and residual value. In a
rocky environment, wear
will be greater on the
ground-engaging tools,
the undercarriage and
other wear items. In addition to understanding the
terms of manufacturers’
warranties, dealers can
prov ide i n sig ht i nto
t he potent ia l for any
additional preventive
maintenance expenses
during its working life.
Machines equipped with
fleet management systems can link dealers to
equipment to enable the
transfer of key diagnostic
information and faster
response times.
Seeking out a dealer with
a reputation for helping contractors meet deadlines and
minimize downtime with
parts availability and maintenance can be invaluable.
Quarries and mines can be
pretty intense applications,
so dealer support in the form
of mobile ser vice trucks
and fast parts availability
are critical as well. Finally,
dealerships will be the most
knowledgeable and qualified
to meet iT4 (interim Tier 4)
and Tier 4 technologies and
their maintenance requirements.

than previous models. The
725C2 uses a fluid retarder
with four operating modes.
Both systems effectively
manage speed and minimize
service brake application for
extended brake life.
All three new C2 Series
models feature full-time, sixwheel drive and are equipped
with wet disc clutch locks
in the cross axle and interaxle differentials. Automatic,
on the go application of the
locks is fully proportional,
engaging only the required
amount of lockup to maintain traction in adverse
conditions—with no input
from the operator. Also, new
for the C2 range is all-axle wet
brakes. The sealed system
prevents the ingress of debris
and extends brake life.
STRUCTURES AND
SUSPENSION
The new C2 Series models
feature field-proven major
structures that ensure longterm durability in severe
applications. The front frame
incorporates box section
longitudinal beams, and the
rear frame uses a four-plate
box construction to reduce
stress points. The hitch retains its durable two-piece
construction, using a caststeel head bolted to a hard
wearing, forged steel tube
that maintains a tight, trouble
free connection between the
frames.
Three-point, oil/nitrogen
front suspension and walking-beam rear suspension
absorb haul road impact to
allow safe, high speed travel. The newly design dump
body, using high-strength
Brinell HB450 wear resistant steel, features a diverging
flow design that promotes
clean dumping and minimizes material carry- back. The
body top rail design reduces
material spillage in the loading area, and a fully welded
front bumper and full-width
belly pan provide enhanced
machine protection.
OPERATOR ENVIRONMENT
The spacious two-person
cab features a multi adjustable air suspension seat
for the operator; a full size,
forward facing seat for the
trainer; tilting/telescopic
steering wheel, and convenient wrap around dash. A
multi-purpose colour display
provides pertinent operating
information, as well as the
feed from the rearview camera when activated.
The low, sloping hood of
the new models, coupled
with the operator’s central
position and extensive glass
area, ensures all-around
visibility. Intuitive, low-effort controls contribute to
safe operation and operator
convenience.
SAFETY AND SERVICEABILITY
Machine headlights and
turn indicators (mounted
wide on the machine), combined with high- mounted
LED width-position marker
lights contribute to improved
night time working safety.
An extensive handrail system, slip-resistant surfaces,
and large, wide-angle mirrors (available in a heated
a version) further enhance
overall safety.
To promote safe operation,
the cab features integral
ROPS/FOPS construction.
An electro-hydraulic secondar y steering system
automatically activates in
low pressure situations. The
park brake is spring applied,
hydraulically released. External switches for fuel cut-off
and electrical disconnect are
easily accessible outside the
machine.
An electric hood, which
is raised and lowered via a
switch in the cab, provides
ample access to routine
ser vice points, and the
rear of cab mounting of the
radiator (using long life coolant) allows easy access for
cleaning. The cab tilts for
access to the transmission,
drive shafts and hydraulic
components, and an electrical service centre in the
cab provides a power port,
diagnostic connector, and
Cat Data Link connector.
Extended drain intervals for
engine oil and hydraulic fluid
lower maintenance costs, as
do adjustment-free wheel
bearings.

Terex Trucks’ Odyssey to Myanmar
It was an epic ten-week
journey, covering a staggering 21,000 kilometres (13,000
miles) by road, river, and sea,
but 29 Terex Trucks have
arrived at the Jade mines of
Myanmar to work on one of
the most remote and challenging terrains to be found
anywhere.
Believed to be the bringer
of prosperity and good fortune, Jade is an extremely
valuable commodity in Asian
cultures, said to be a bridge
between heaven and hell.
Kachin State in northern
Myanmar is home to some
of the world’s highest quality
deposits, known as jadeite.
These are estimated to be
worth up to US$31 billion
annually, almost half of
the country’s GDP, and are
shipped overseas for use in
jewellery and other products.
Much of the extraction of
the Jade deposits is done by
‘boulder mining’. This is a
process where the overburden material is removed to
expose the rocks below, after
which the Jade-containing
rocks are separated, washed
and processed to reveal the
pockets of precious Jade
inside.
The extraction process is
far from easy. It’s a tough
job for robust, reliable
equipment. And this is no
place for breakdowns. That’s
why, when three local mine
operators needed additional
hauling machines to take
on the job of transporting
thousands of tonnes of blasted rocks and earth 2 km or
more from the mine to the
processing plant, they called
on Terex Trucks.
IN FOR THE LONG HAUL
The three mining companies: Aung Hein Min Gems
Co., Ltd., Yar Za Htar Ne
Gems Co.,Ltd., and Myanmar Thura Gems Co., Ltd.
contacted Yangon-based
dealer Aung Hein Min Co.
Ltd (AHM Heavy) to supply
them with 19 Terex Trucks
100-ton-capacity TR100s and
10 Terex Trucks 60-ton-capacity TR60s.
For two of the customers,
Terex Trucks had already
proved their worth. Aung
Hein Min Gems Co., Ltd
had previously ordered six
42-ton-capacity TA400 articulated haulers, while Yar
Za Htar Ne Gems Co.,Ltd.
had 20 Terex Trucks TA400
in their fleet. Myanmar Thura
Gems Co., Ltd is a new customer.
Choosing the right trucks
for the job was the easy part.
AHM Heavy, a Terex Trucks
dealer since 2013, now had
somehow to tackle the challenge of transporting the
machines over 21,000 kilometres (13,000 miles) from

READY, STEADY, GO
The first part of the journey, which took five weeks,
saw the trucks assembled
and packed in Motherwell
before being transported
9,000 nautical miles (16,668
km) to Yangon, via Singapore by containership. Once
in Yangon the trucks were
transferred to three barges,
with a maximum of 10 per
barge.
“Loading the trucks onto
the barges was no easy
task,” says AHM Heavy’s
Marcus-Zaw Naing Oo. “To
avoid sinking the barges and
trucks, they were loaded in a
shuffle sequence to maintain
the barge’s balance until all
machines were in place.
“Water levels were critical
at this point. If the water level
is too low, it cannot support
the barge and its cargo. Too
high and with a fast flowing
river, it’s unsafe and we risk
the barge and trucks being
swept away.”
Once loaded safely, the
trucks began their journey along the Uyu River
to Phakant’s closest port,
Kathar. This part of the journey, just under 966 km (600
miles), took a further three
weeks.
Once disembarked the
final leg of the journey (a
mere 193 km (120 miles))
took just three days, with the
trucks driving to the mine
site’s equipment yards in
Phakant. But even this part
of the journey was difficult.
“The trucks were delivered
during Myanmar’s wet season,” says Marcus-Zaw Naing

flooded and very muddy,

traction the trucks were able

Terex Trucks shipped 29 trucks to the jade mines of Myanmar.
Oo, only undergoing scheduled stoppages for planned
maintenance and servicing.
The new trucks are only operational during Myanmar’s
dry season, which runs from
roughly November to May.
For the remainder of the year,
they are stood down.
“The trucks are playing
a vital role, transporting
blasted rock and earth from
the mine to the processing
plant,” says Marcus-Zaw
Naing Oo. “So far feedback form the client has
been excellent. Our reports
showing outstanding availability, productivity, and fuel
efficiency, with no major
faults, or maintenance requirements.”

The TAD1643VE-B offers
a range of features, making
it a compact, versatile and
cost-effective off-road industrial powerhouse, which
is the best in its emissions
class. Features include:

engine more suitable for
mobile applications.

more efficient combustion, for improved fuel
consumption and lower
operating costs.

our trucks can haul up the

Due to the turbo-charger on the new Sandvik TH663, extended torque
curve allows for better performance at a wider range of rpm, making it
more powerful, particularly at the lower end of rpm.

Sandvik operates in both
