Beautification Day Brings Back Community Spirit

At least 50 volunteers gathered for the first ever Beautification Day
held on Saturday, June 16th. Discover Olde Towne Fenton signs, courtesy of Pfitzinger Graphics, lined the streets to bring
attention to the event. Beginning early that
morning, people began arriving, buckets,
rakes and paint brushes in hand to make
Olde Towne Fenton shine. Once signed in,
they were provided with a t-shirt, compliments of UniQue Ideas ‘N More and
breakfast from Hardees before being
assigned to an area.
Volunteers of all ages joined forces, putting their knuckles to the grind washing, polishing and painting the Olde Towne Fenton.
The event was the first of its kind, organized
through the efforts of local business owners who are a
part of the Olde Towne Fenton Business Association. The
association meets monthly to discuss ways to bring patrons
to the area, beautify the city and bring
the community together.
Volunteers included area business
owners, representatives from the
Fenton Area Chamber of Commerce,
area families, members of the Fenton
Garden Club, representatives of Realty
Executives Premiere and over a dozen
U.S. Navy Servicemen, who were
recruited to join in Beautification Day.
Areas around Olde Towne Fenton were
addressed by pulling weeds, picking up trash, power washing and painting, among
many other exterior projects throughout the city in areas such as behind Brannan’s
Marine and around Sisters Tea House. Wallpaper Paint and More donated paint and supplies so that volunteers could paint the fence in front of the US Bank building and railing aside
the old Commerce Bank building. While some painted, others spruced up the sign welcoming people to the city.
A couple blocks down, a little water made a big difference outside the Metro Electric building, as well as Fenton
Flowers and Fenton Pawn Shop. The old Commerce Bank building, which is currently for sale, was made ready for
a new tenant—complete with a facelift to the entire exterior. Two trees were removed along with debris and a newly

Alderman Harold Bade drove around throughout
the duration of Beautification Day, ensuring that the
needs of the volunteers were attended to by providing cool refreshments, tools and other items while
they were there.
Following a four-hour cleaning frenzy, volunteers were invited back to Western Plaza,
where they were provided with hotdogs
donated by PNC Bank, chips from Old
Vienna as well as cold drinks, donated by Olde Towne Vet Hospital and
a number of others generous businesses. Viviano’s donated a delicious dessert of cookies and brownies to sweeten the moment.
This was just one of the ways Olde
Towne Fenton business owners could
combine their efforts in bringing the community together for one great cause. The success
of the first Beautification Day just goes to
show how many people love Olde Towne
Fenton and all who are represented within.
The community is full of many generous,
small businesses and caring families who
want nothing more than to see Olde
Towne Fenton be the best it can be.
Complete with a new logo and many
more plans for the future, the Olde Towne
Fenton Business Association is off to a great
start!

ATTENTION Military Families and Supporters
Military Family Day at the Park scheduled for July 15th

When three unlikely organizations come
together for one common cause, the result may
just be nothing less than extraordinary.
Even though the event has yet to occur, I
have no doubt that it will be one of tears,
joy and pride like this area hasn’t seen in
quite some time.
Rick Waser (U.S. Army 1969-71), owner of
Springdale Park and Pool, in Fenton, called upon
two friends – Jeff Hof of The Land of Giants Truck
Club and Wendy Thomas of Jefferson County
Military Families Support Network (JCMFSN) – to collaborate
on an event to give back to the men and women of the United
States military. The coordinated effort of the three has brought
forth a multitude of supporters from across the region.
On Sunday, July 15, hundreds will gather for
the first-ever Military Family Day in the Park.
From 11:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Springdale Park
and Pool will be transformed in tribute to those
who currently serve or have served our country.
Veterans and active duty military families
(immediate family) with a valid military ID are
invited to come out and enjoy a day designed
just for them, FREE of charge, including a delicious barbeque lunch. The event is
open to the public for only $7 (additional charge for food). All civilian senior citizens (62+) are welcomed at a 2 for 1 discounted entry.
Military mother, Lisa Mitchell, will open the event by singing our National Anthem. The duration of the
event, activities will be going on throughout the park, including demonstrations from the Jefferson County
Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit, a horseshoe tournament, raffles and various children’s activities. Saline Valley
Fire District will bring out a fire truck and safe house. Rock Community Fire Protection District will bring an
ambulance and D.A.R.E. will show off their Corvette so that everyone to get a closer look at the great vehicles
serving our community.
Big Dawg, Bo Matthews from WIL 92.3FM Radio will bring out BoFoot from 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. to sit
aside the display of big trucks from The Land of Giants Truck Club.
FREE admission into the park and FREE registration for those who are
participating in the auto show, also occurring at the event. Cars will not
be divided into classes, however, trophies will be awarded for Military
Favorite so bring out your vehicles!
The Fallen Hero’s Dream Ride (www.fallenherosdreamride.org) that
debuted at Six Flags on Memorial Day, will be on display for all to see.
This 1951 Chevy pick-up is adorned with a Fallen Heroes theme in honor
of Marines from 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment who experienced the
loss of 25 men who were killed in action along with hundreds of casualties, including many amputees during their seven month deployment.

Area firefighters gather for second annual washer tournament

It all began last year as a fundraiser for the family of local firefighter, Captain Steve Grimes who battled leukemia for over a year.
Sadly, he lost his battle with cancer the day after the 2011 Show Me
FOOLS Washer Tournament that was held to help out a friend and fellow firefighter. Show Me FOOLS vowed to continue on with the benefit each year in his honor so as to always remember what he has given
to them. This year, hundreds gathered again to pay tribute to their
friend, mentor and brother for the second annual Show Me FOOLS
Washer Tournament on Thursday, June 14 at d.Dooley’s in Fenton.

Show Me FOOLS is a firefighter fraternal organization
that is non-political and tradition based. Their motto is
“Service Before Self” and that couldn’t be more true as it is
for the second year in a row.
According to firefighter Paul Seemayer, “The firefighting brotherhood is a very close group. We consider each
other, whether we know you or not, to be one of our family.” He explained their brotherhood by saying that when

Recently, Fenton resident
Robert “Ferd” Frank, was
honored in the Black &
White Spider Awards for
two of his black and white
photographs. The online exhibition is open to amateur and
professional photographers from all over the world. The
Black & White Spider Awards offers 14 categories including Fine Art, Photojournalism and Overall Photographer of
the Year, just to name a few.
According to their website (www.thespiderawards.com),
the exhibition is described as representing “the world’s
finest contemporary photographers as nominated by the
Jury.” With only a few hundred chosen from thousands of
submitted images, winning in any category is quite a prestigious honor to add to a photographer’s portfolio.
This is the 7th annual Winners Gallery for the Black &
White Spider Awards.
In his biography, Ferd describes his talents as self-taught,
having evolved since he first began in 2000 with photographs and painting. Although his earlier years were more
focused in the area of music, we are fortunate that he began
dabbling in other areas in order to explore his artistic talents

As the day draws near, event organizers are working hard to ensure the
success of the first ever Fenton Triathlon to be held on Saturday, August
4th. The event, which features a 300 yard swim with a serpentine start,
16.5 mile bike ride and 3.1 mile run, begins and ends at RiverChase of
Fenton.
The 2012 Fenton Triathlon is presented by The City of Fenton Parks and
Recreation Department in addition to several sponsors including:

Join in the fun and be a part of Fenton history! Many will gather for
this unique experience that affords participants an opportunity to swim,
bike and run through some of the most scenic areas in Fenton. Swimmers
will plunge into the outdoor pool at RiverChase of Fenton. The bike course
will take riders past Fenton City Park and along the scenic Meramec
Greenway. The running course will then take you through a part of the City
of Fenton’s running/walking trail system.
Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers in the
following age groups: 19 & under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 4549, 50-54, 55-59, 60 & over.
Registration has been extended through July 19th but it’s getting close
so call today! The $40 entry fee and registration forms must be mailed, emailed or brought to RiverChase, located at 990 Horan Drive on or before
the deadline.
Volunteers (16 and older) are needed for the event day to direct traffic,
hand out water and assist in other areas.

It wasn’t just barbeque that they served up at Rockwood
Bank in Fenton, it was a whole lot of fun too! The pulled pork
nachos were the star at this year’s Customer Appreciation
Day, held on Friday, June 15. Created by Mike Sperl, who
graciously shared his grilling talents, the
nachos were a fabulous new addition to the already full menu of
items served at the event.

The event was a great opportunity for Rockwood Bank to
show appreciation to their customers and get to know some
unfamiliar faces that they many now be seeing a little more
often!

A Community Gathers to Walk for Children

The feeling was unexplainable as I arrived on the Northwest High School campus the morning of Saturday, June 16. Typically it is exciting to be a part of an
event that has brought out so many people but this particular morning was different. It was a bittersweet moment, seeing how many people came together in support of the First Annual Walking for Our Children; all the while knowing that each of these people has experienced a loss like no other.
Parents, friends and supporters gathered behind a sign that read “We Remember. Today - Tomorrow – Forever.” They stood aside one another, with one common goal – to walk for their children.
Regardless of the circumstances, all parents grieve the loss of their child. To be a part of something like this was extraordinary.
To be close to strangers, hold hands with friends and walk with others who knew exactly how you felt was quite a blessing. I can
honestly say that I haven’t had many moments that took my breathe away quite like this.
It was an honor knowing that so many in our community care and that support is available for parents through Chapel Hill’s Parent
Support Group.
Pastor Wayne Keunzle blessed the event before over 150 people set off for the one and a half-mile journey to Chapel Hill Memorial
Gardens.
As overwhelming as it might have been to begin that walk, what a relief they all must have felt, arriving at their destination at
Chapel Hill. Following the walk, members from the support group were asked to speak to the walkers, who were joined by at least
50 more guests at the ceremony. Then, balloons were released in memory of all children who have passed. The uniqueness of each child
was exhibited through the variety of musical genres [chosen by parents] playing in the background during the ceremony.
This is just the first of what will be many more walks in remembrance of our children. As others learn of the event and the support
available from the Chapel Hill Parent Support Group, it will grow larger each year. As the sign said it best, “We Remember. Today Tomorrow – Forever.” That is the focus of this event and everyone who came together to share their support.
Chapel Hill’s Parent Support Group meets at 7:00 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month at the Jefferson County
Library – Northwest Branch in High Ridge. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, August 7.
On Facebook, the group is known as Parents of Chapel Hill Support Group. Though Chapel Hill hosts the Support
Group, all grieving parents are welcome, regardless of where the funeral services were held.

In honor of Fenton’s 175th Anniversary, a large
group of people gathered together for a night at the
ballpark. Fenton Night at the Cardinals Game
was complete with a ceremonial first pitch thrown
by none other than Mayor Dennis Hancock.
Despite the Card’s loss to the Royals, Fenton supporters were still pumped with the opportunity to
join together at such a historic event to honor our
great city.

Meet 2009 Rockwood Summit
High School graduate Jim Vavak.
Jim attended Rockwood Summit
High School and played 3 years of
varsity football as a Linebacker. His senior year, Jim was one of the captains of the football team and was a member of the school’s Captain
Council. In 2007, the Rockwood Summit Falcons won their 7th District
Football Championship and Jim was honored to be a part of that team.
In addition to Jim’s football success, Jim made it to districts in wrestling
his freshman year; and on the spring break of his senior year, Jim participated in a community project in New Orleans to help with the
Hurricane Katrina tragedy. Jim currently attends Millikin University in
Decatur, Illinois and plays D3 football. At Millikin he is a two time Varsity
Letterman heading into his third season with the team, and in 2011 was
named to the CCIW Academic All-Conference Team. Good Luck to Jim
as he completes his College career!

Circle Of Concern collecting Food Items
for Kid Bags This Summer
With more families – and more kids – getting help from Circle Of Concern’s food pantry, the Valley Park based
charity is seeking donations of ‘kid friendly’ food.
The food will be packed in special Kid Bags to be shared with struggling families with school age children
throughout June, July, and August. Last year Circle distributed more than 1,200 Kid Bags, and we hope to distribute 1,500 Kid Bags this summer.
“When students are home from school they do not have access to the reduced/free breakfast and lunch programs offered there.” explains Pantry Director Sada Lindsey. “Many families also spend a lot more in child care
during the summer. With our Kid Bags we try to lessen the strain on families already struggling to afford the food
they need.”
Circle needs the following food items to fill our Kid Bags:
• Canned Pasta (Spaghetti-Os, ravioli, etc)
• Breakfast Cereal
• Mac & Cheese
• Jelly & Peanut Butter
• 100% Fruit Juice Boxes
Donations can be brought to the pantry at 112 St. Louis Ave. weekdays until 3pm and Saturdays until noon.
