Getting Away from It All
Summer is a time for vacations and rest, for leaving behind the normal routine, and for visiting a
new place or trying a new activity. Afterward, we can return to our job and our regular routine refreshed, and with renewed vigor and energy.
In a similar way, we occasionally need to get away from our normal routine in our spiritual life. If
we stick with the same routine and the same spiritual practices for months or years without any
variation, we can become bored, tired, or stuck. Trying something new (such as attending a religious conference or going on a retreat) can refresh us, and give us renewed vigor and energy. We
are blessed in Southern California because there are many Catholic conferences and retreats that
we can participate in.
For example, SCRC (Southern California Renewal Communities) is having its 44th annual Catholic
Renewal Convention at the Anaheim Convention Center during the Labor Day weekend from Friday, September 4 through Sunday, September 6. SCRC’s mission is to make known the transforming power of Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit to the glory of God the Father.
Every year, the Convention attracts upwards of 10,000 Catholics who are alive with the Holy
Spirit and on fire with the faith. You can attend one day, two days, or all three days. Each day,
there are three or four one-hour sessions, and for each session there are three to five conferences
to choose from. Topics include: “The Joy of Jesus Christ,” “The Power of Angels,” “The Sacred
Responsibility of Being Baptized in the Spirit,” “Experiencing Joy Every Day,” “Loving God with
All Your Heart,” “Growing in the Fruit of the Holy Spirit,” and “Finding Joy in Tribulation.” The
speakers are priests, deacons, religious sisters, and lay people who are active and well-known
within the Catholic charismatic community and beyond. In addition, there are special prayer and
praise services, Masses, and healing services. For those who are unfamiliar with Catholic charismatic spirituality, your understanding of the faith will be greatly enhanced and broadened if you
attend the Convention.
The Convention also includes special programs for: (1) children who are entering kindergarten
through grade 5; (2) teens who are entering grades 6-12 (scrc.org/teen); and (3) young adults
(scrc.org/ya). Furthermore, there is a special track for Catholics who want to learn more about
spiritual warfare, deliverance ministry, and exorcism. In addition, there is a Vietnamese Conference (scrc.org/vietnamese) as well as a Spanish-language conference called “Libertad,” which offers a practical approach to greater freedom from the influence of evil (scrc.org/libertad).

El verano es tiempo para tomar vacaciones y descansar, para dejar atrás la rutina normal, y para visitar un
lugar nuevo o tratar una nueva actividad. Después, podemos volver a nuestro trabajo y a nuestra rutina regular renovados, y con vigor y energía renovada.
De manera similar, ocasionalmente necesitamos de alejarnos de nuestra rutina normal en nuestra vida espiritual. Si nos quedamos con la misma rutina y las mismas prácticas espirituales durante meses o años sin
ninguna variación, podemos aburrirnos, cansarnos, o quedar estancados. Intentar algo nuevo (como asistir a
una conferencia religiosa o ir a un retiro) nos puede renovar, y darnos nuevo vigor y energía. Somos bendecidos aquí en el sur de California, porque hay muchas conferencias católicas y retiros en que podemos participar.
Por ejemplo, SCRC (Southern California Renewal Communities ) está teniendo su 44º Convención de Renovación Católica anual en el Centro de Convenciones de Anaheim durante el fin de semana del Día del
Trabajo del viernes 04 de septiembre hasta el domingo 6 de septiembre. La misión de SCRC es dar a conocer la transformación del poder de Jesús Cristo en el Espíritu Santo para la gloria de Dios Padre.

The Catholic Bible Institute is a three year bible-study program
which entails a comprehensive study of Scripture as well as focusing on skills in bible-study leadership. People seeking personal enrichment and not certification may enroll as audit students in the first and second year on a space available basis.
Several St. Margaret Mary parishioners have completed the
three year course over the years and each would recommend it
to anyone interested in learning more about the Bible. In addition to better appreciating God’s revealed word, one better understands the Catholic approach to the study of scripture. it
truly is an outstanding program.
CBI meets one Saturday a month from 9:00 AM-4:00 PM at
Loyola Marymount University. Participants are mentored by a
team of facilitators and experience a variety of instructional
methods including presentations from a wide range of biblical
scholars and experts, communal praying of scripture, small
group discussion, reading assignments including scripture and
commentaries, reflection papers and research papers if certification is a goal.

GOD’S WORD TODAY
“Where
can we buy enough food for them to eat?”
This question, posed by the Lord to Philip, signaled
the beginning of the miracle of the multiplication of
the loaves and fishes, recounted in today’s Gospel. In
the last few years the world has witnessed catastrophic natural disasters. The destruction that they
wrought left us all stunned, wondering how we could
help, even in some small way. Today’s Gospel reminds us that when even our small efforts at helping
people are multiplied, a miracle of comfort and healing is the result. As we listen to God’s word and share
in the miracle of the Eucharist, let us open our hearts
to those in need, doing whatever we can to help alleviate the suffering of many.

La multiplicación de los panes, mencionada
seis veces por los cuatro evangelistas, constituye un signo que se debe interpretar en clave
social y eucarística. En primer lugar, Jesús alimenta a una muchedumbre hambrienta. Tan
necesario como alimentarse es dar de comer a
los demás, sobre todo a los pobres; es un imperativo evangélico. Sin reparto de comida y bebida (signos naturales del trabajo creador del
hombre) no hay eucaristía. La eucaristía es
ágape fraterno que presencializa la caridad de
Cristo, totalmente entregado en persona. Antes
de multiplicar el pan, Jesús hace cinco gestos
de tradición eucarístico, narrados por los
sinópticos: toma los panes, alza la mirada al
cielo, los bendice, los parte y los reparte.

de otras personas. Quiere que todas las cosas
maravillosas que suceden en la tierra sean con
la ayuda de la humanidad. Quiere que nazcan
otros seres humanos, y se sirve del amor de los

acercarnos, de perdonar, de tolerarnos, de ayudarnos. Ante los problemas de cada familia y
de cada generación, el Señor nos pregunta:
¿qué les parece?, ¿qué se puede hacer? Y espera que le demos una respuesta.
Cuando nosotros ponemos lo poco que tenemos, Dios pone lo demás.

algunos consejos para ayudar a mantener la seguridad de los

línea. 2. Tenga la computadora en un área pública de la casa.

PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN
Summertime safety is key for children and parents
All teachers, staff and volunteers in the Archdiocese who work with children must undergo
fingerprinting and criminal background checks.
Last year alone, the Office of Safeguard the
Children trained 30,514 adults and 166,850
children in the VIRTUS® Child Sexual Abuse
Prevention Programs. If your child is participating in summer activities outside of the Archdiocese, make sure you know if the organization or camp preforms criminal background and reference checks on their staff.

SUMMER AT THE SISTERS
August is coming, and the Sisters of Charity of Rolling Hills
(on Palos Verdes Dr. East) will be closed for house repairs
from Saturday, August 1 until Tuesday, September 8. We will
not be able to accept donations during this
time.
We very much want to thank all of you who make contributions of food, clothing, furniture and so many other items that
help to lessen the burdens of the families with whom we work.

Each week our parish serves hundreds of families through our Christian Service
Ministry. Did you know that these families include a total of nearly 250 children?
Together, let us help prepare them for a productive school year. Our goal is to
supply backpacks and school supplies to children registered in our program from
kindergarten through high school, so all age supplies and backpacks for all ages
are needed.

Cada semana nuestra parroquia atiende a cientos de
familias a través de nuestro Ministerio de Servicio Cristiano. ¿Sabia usted que a
estas familias incluyen un total de cerca de 250 niños?
Juntos, vamos a ayudarlos a prepararse para un año escolar productivo. Nuestro
objetivo es proporcionarles las mochilas y útiles escolares a los niños inscritos en
nuestro programa desde el Kinder hasta la High School, por lo que lo que todos los
útiles escolares de todas las edades y las mochilas son necesarios.
