Vienna High School recently
held a successful mock election organized by Mr. Harner and his first
block class. On Wednesday, November 1st, students gathered in the
commons area to vote for their
choice of president, county officials,
and judges. They voted as in a real
election, assisted by Robin Whitehead from the county clerk’s office.
The purpose of the election was
to familiarize each student with how
a real election is held and to encourage them to vote when they reach
eighteen. Students were called into
the commons by class and given a
sample ballot, which was exactly like
the ones used in the real election.
They were told to slip the ballot into
the box and punch the hole next to
the name of their choice. The students were urged to vote even if they
weren’t sure. “I don’t care how you
vote, just vote,” Mr. Harner said.
After the ballot was filled, they
dropped it into a ballot box to be

taken to the county clerk’s office to
be counted. The results will be published in the Vienna Times, as well
as the Talon, to let the town know
who the students favor.
I spoke with Democrat Mr.
Harner previous to the election to
ask his prediction of the outcome.
“Gore is the most competent, and
the people will vote their pocketbooks. The economy is growing,
and people want to keep that.” He
also feels that this mock election
may influence the outcome of the
real election, as it has in the past, if
the results are released prior to the
voting. He stoutly supports Al Gore
and feels that though the general
election will be close, he will prevail.
I also spoke with Mr. David
Hill to see the election from a
Republican’s point of view. He feels
Bush will win by a landslide.
“Johnson County is pretty conservative; there’s a chance most stu-

Leslie Scarborough was
nominated for the Toyota Scholars Program which recognizes
academic excellence and encourages young people to actively
participate in community service.
When Leslie was asked how
she felt about being nominated, she
said, “I was surprised to be chosen as the Toyota Scholarship
nominee. I feel very honored for
the nomination.”
Jill Clayton was nominated for
the National Society for the Daughters of the American Revolution
(DAR) scholarship and essay contest. The DAR recognizes students
on the basis of the dependability,
service to the community, leadership, and patriotism.
Jill said, “I was very excited to
hear I had been chosen for the DAR
Scholarship. It was a great feeling
to know that my teachers chose me
based on the criteria. It is a great
honor.”

similar outcome. “Clinton has left a
sour taste in the mouth of a lot of
voters,” he stated.
The coordinators of the mock
election hope holding this election
will increase the number of people
who come to the polls over the next
few years. The goal is to cause students to be more aware that their
vote does count, and feel if students
are able to experience the election
process, they will realize the importance and go to the polls in the next
election.

Traveling
Fairy Tales

On October 18 and 19th, the
Drama class went to both Head
Start and the Vienna Grade School
to perform what they call “Traveling Fairy Tales.” Four fairy tales
were performed in all: “Little Red
Riding Hood,” “Rumplestiltskin,”
“Hansel and Gretel,” and
“Cinderella.”
The thing that made these fairy
tales special was the fact that each
one had a quirk that separated
them from the classic fairy tales.
For example, in Cinderella the
prince never actually marries
Cinderella; instead he marries her
much homelier sister.
The actors did well. Almost everyone memorized their lines, and
good inflection was present as well
(everyone talked loud enough).
Though the actors may not be
Hollywood material and the sets
looked extremely bad, the kids loved
it, and that’s what counts.
When reached for comment,
funny-man Andy Farmer stated,
“I think it was a good experience.
Yes, I’d definitely do it again.”

Open House at V.H.S.

Vienna High School held its
annual Open House on Monday, October 30th. The Open
House was held to allow parents to see how their children
are doing in each of their
classes. Parents and teachers
discuss student grades, performance in the classroom, and
how teachers might help students improve their grades.
Students were encouraged to
come with their parents to the
Open House.
The main purpose of having an open house is to set aside
time for interested parents to
view the facilities at V.H.S. and
to discuss their child’s progress
with teachers. The Student
Council helped by serving refreshments to visitors in the
commons area.
Parents got the opportunity
to view some of their child’s
past and current projects.
Mrs. Mize said, “We were
pleased parents took time out
of their busy schedules to come
to Open House.”
There was a very good
turn out at the Open House.
Over all, positive comments
were receives from parents and
teachers. One mother suggested to Mrs. Mize that we
have an open house each semester so she could meet her
child’s teachers for both terms.
When Mrs. Mize was asked if
she thought this year’s Open
House was a success, she
stated, “Yes, it was very successful for the parents who took
advantage of the opportunity to
meet teachers and discuss their
child’s progress.”

College Advice from Mr. Hamm

VHS Guidance Counselor Mr.
Hamm was recently asked some
questions concerning college advice. When asked about what type
of academic material is needed to
get into a good college, Mr. Hamm
replied, “You should have at least
3 science and 3 math credits from
high school. The better colleges
even require 4 credits of science
and math. Also, good computer
skills are essential.”
He went on to say that the ACT
assessment should be taken no
later than June of your Junior year.
He said that you may also want to
take this assessment two times to
maximize your score. Of course,
the higher score, combined with a
high grade point average will provide more college opportunities,
as well as a greater opportunity
for scholarships.
According to Mr. Hamm, de-
cisions regarding the college you
want to attend should be made by
the middle of your Senior year.
This will allow you to submit admission applications and apply
early for scholarships. The
FAFSA (Free Application for
Federal Student Aid) should be
completed after January 1st of
your Senior year. Any financial
aid you may be eligible for requires completion of this document.
I then asked Mr. Hamm how
he thought students should go about
getting information on scholarships. He said, “Scholarship information can be obtained by contacting the school you plan on attending. This is an automatic process accompanying your admission application. Also, deciding
upon a major course of study as
early as possible will enable you
to pursue scholarships given for
that particular field of study.”
Researching scholarships is a
must. One good resource is the
Horizon Careers computer program. Click on “Education and
Training” then go to the financial
aid box. This will access hundreds of scholarships that you can
research. Keep in mind that college is paid for through a number
of sources, i.e. grants, loans,
scholarships, and personal savings.
After that, I asked Mr. Hamm
what the advantages are of attending a junior college before a four
year university. He said, “The
primary advantage of attending a
junior college prior to a four year
university is the cost. The tuition
and fees are usually about half of
what you would pay at a four year
university.
You will also save room and
board fees, as most junior colleges
are close to home, thereby eliminating the cost of living on campus. Also living at home for another year or two allows you some
time to mature and prepare yourself for living independently once
you do move away to school. Very
few 18-year olds are ready for this
life altering event.”
Finally, I asked Mr. Hamm if
there are any advantages of living
on campus as opposed to living
off campus. He replied, “All
freshman and sophomore college
students are required to live on
campus, unless you have a medical or other predisposing condition that will prevents you from
this. Once you are a Junior, the
advantage of off-campus housing
includes the choice of roommates,
life-style, and location or style of
housing. It also is usually less
expensive to live off campus.
However, the major disadvantage
is that you own all responsibility
for every living need, from planning and cooking meals to paying
utilities. This can be difficult to
manage while studying at the same
time.”

The VHS Drama Club has just
recently announced that we have a
new leader to take over where Mrs.
Mize left off. When Mrs. Mize took
the position of principal here at the
high school, she decided that there
were some things that she was going to have to sacrifice to better keep
up with her responsibility as our new
principal. She has worked very hard
with our Drama club and has donated a lot of time to all of our plays
and functions. But taking position
as principal, there was many responsibilities, so she decided that she
couldn’t be the main leader of the
Drama club anymore. But she has
said, that if there is any need of help,
she would be more than happy to
lend a hand in whatever she could.
We appreciate her very much for
that!
When considering a new leader,
Mr. David Hill took on the job. Mr.
Hill has many new things planned for
our club that has never been considered here before. We have some
new ideas on how to make more
money for our club, such as hosting
fund-raisers that people in the community would be interested in. The
money that we make will be used

Leslie Scarborough’s Walk With Golf

Leslie Scarborough started
playing golf her freshman year in
pursuit of becoming an accomplished golfer. After realizing her
potential, Leslie decided that she
was going to take golfing a little more
seriously than she had previously
thought.
After many years of hard work
and effort, Leslie has shown that it
has payed off. She has dedicated
almost all of her time to practicing
and getting better at her
strategies.
Leslie has played this
summer in some major
tournaments and plans to
compete this fall and
winter in more of them
on a Midwest Tour. Her
college coaches will recognize her abilities, and
show her things that will
further perfect her game.
Due to her scores and
positive attitude, Leslie
qualified as an individual at
the Carbondale Regional,
held on October 5th. After scoring a 90 at her Regional Tournament, she
then furthered herself on
to a more dramatic competition. This one made
the decision of whether or not she
would progress to the State Tournament, which has been a long-term
goal of hers.
The Sectional Tournament was
held at Rolling Hills Golf Course in
Alton, Illinois on October 10. In a
tournament field of 96 golfers, she
came up short on qualifying for the
IHSA State Tournament. Leslie just
missed qualifying by two strokes
with a score of 87, and tied for fifteenth in the sectional event. Out of
all the girls that were in her regional,
she did an exceptional job and has
represented Vienna High School
very well.
VHS Golf Coach, Mrs. Bremer
stated, “ Leslie is proof of what hard
work can do. Unfortunately, two
strokes kept her from completing
one of the goals she set for herself
on this pursuit. Golf is a game that
teaches lessons of life and sometimes
in cruel ways.”
Mrs. Bremer went on to say,
“Leslie plans on playing college golf.
At this time we are not sure where
but, quite possibly the University of
Illinois. I am saddened that she did
not complete her career at VHS as
she would have wished, but Leslie
will draw from this experience what
is to be gained and move forward.
It has been a joy because of her personal faith and testimony, and how
she lives it out along with watching
her maturity and attributes which include commitment and perseverance
just to name a few.”
When it came down to the outlook that Leslie has had with her
golf experience and what she has
learned over these past four years,
Leslie commented, “ I have learned
a lot from golf these past four years,
not only about the game but life in
general. Mentally, the game will
break you down or make you feel
like you’re on top of the world. If
you ever get the chance to play golf,
I recommend you take it. You never
know, you may learn to love it!”
We congratulate Leslie on all
of her accomplishments that she
has contributed to Vienna High
School, and wish her many more
in the years to come. Job well
done Leslie!

Top 10 Weird Laws

Recently I sat down to interview Mrs. Tina Vancil, a student
teacher here at lovely Vienna
High School. She grew up in
Southern IL, but later moved all
over the map including, Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Indiana.
She has two children, Megan13 and Bart-8. She says she enjoys teaching at Vienna and everyone is so friendly and helpful.
Her life-long dream has been to
teach, though she’s filled many
positions.
One job she also currently
holds an aerobics class at Fitness
Forum in Anna and has for five
years. She’s even been known for
calling a stretch break during English class, “Because stretching is
important!”
As for idols, she holds only
one, good old Mr. David Hill
whom she wants to be just like
when she grows up.

VHS Launches Rockets

Friday, November the third,
2000: Crowds massed outside to
watch VHS students under the
guidance of Mr. Reichert
launched rockets out on the front
lawn today.
Some of the rockets had interesting names. Everything from
“Fat Boy” to the “Mosquito.”
Most of the rockets did well,
launched up and opened para-
chutes on re-entry. However a
handful of rockets had less than
spectacular results. One rocket
landed on the telephone wire outside, and is presumably still there.
Some launched and were never
found again, sailing far beyond
sight.
All in all though, the rocket
launch is a VHS tradition that will

VHS Participates in SEMO Homecoming Parade

The VHS Marching Band
participated on Oct. 21st at the
SEMO homecoming parade. This
was the band’s third parade this
year.
The Band competed in class
AA, even though most of the other
schools’ bands’ in AA were much
larger than Vienna’s.

said,“I thought the performing
was fun...people were yelling,
“trumpets rock!”
On the 28th, the band played
at Pickneyville at the Mardi Gras
Parade. Although the band didn’t

Day parade.

Auto Mechanics Class
Cisco Class

There are a few select classes
you can take at Vienna High
School in which you can earn not
only high school credits, but college credits, as well. One of these
classes is Cisco. This class has
been offered at the high school
since last year.
In the class, the students
learn how to design intra-networks. Each student earns 2 college credits each semester that
they take the class and complete
it successfully.
Three out of five students in
last year’s Cisco class are majoring in Cisco or computer work
in college. Through his participation in this class, Aaron
Scarbough has an SIC scholarship and is majoring in computers. Brandon Kindle attends
SCC and is majoring in computers. Another former student,
Ryan Hill is going to SIU and he
is also majoring in computers.
Cisco student, Travis Ames,
says, “Cisco is a very beneficial
class. I plan on majoring in some
type of computer occupation.”

Every year a few Vienna
High School students go to
Goreville for an Auto class.
There are 18 VHS students in the
class, and 16 from Goreville.
The class is taught by Mr. John
Dicus from Goreville.
This class is very different
from the other clases here at Vienna. There are 2 credits from
this class that go towards college.
There are several people that
have obtained careers because of
this class, Mike Cullison-Napa,
Randy Kerly-Mechanic, and
Leslie Ingle-Mechanic.
Everything from entry level
mechanic skills to engine overhaul is taught here. They are also

Information Processing

Information Processing is one
of the classes that one can take at
VHS and earn hours at Shawnee
Community College at the same
time. The class is two semesters
or a full school year. It is a computer based class in which the students learn several programs that
could later help them in finding a
job or make college a little easier.
Some of the programs that are included in the class are Microsoft
Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint,
FrontPage, and Pagemaker 6.5.
While the students are taking
the Information Processing class,
they are also receiving credit hours
at Shawnee Community College.
To obtain the four hours of college credit, the students must have
a C grade or better and score a 38
or better in the reading section of
the ASSET test.
Several of the students agreed
that the new information that they
were learning in the class was going to be very useful, both in college and later in the job world. The
students also said that the class was
fun and a good learning experience
and that they would recommend
other students to take Information
Processing, not based on the college
hours, but on the new and valuable
information the they would learn.

Nursing Class

Every year there are a few
classes offered at VHS that give
students credits towards college. One class is the nursing
class. This class is taught by
Mrs. Reichert. They go to the
Hillview nursing home two
days a week in the morning to
help take care of the residents.
There are 6 CNA and 1
CRR credits from this class that
go to college classes. This is a Checking up on some of the residents
very good class to take because
it can help you get a job. About
seventy-five percent of students
that have completed this class
have obtained jobs because of
the experience that the students
receive in this class. It has been
offered here for a total of sixteen years.

to care for elderly people and
what vital signs are.

Many of you may not realize
that China is an up and coming
nation in the world today. The
young people of China are growing more modernized as they embrace western culture and ideas.
These teenagers are called the
Generation of Tiananmen, due to
the series of riots and hunger
strikes that progressed from a
demonstration in Tiananmen
Square on June 3, 1989. It turned
to a blood bath when a beloved
leader ordered his troops to fire
into the crowd.
Tiananmen Square soon became the symbol of a new way of
thinking, and a new wave of leaders, and more importantly freedom. Since then, the youth of
China have been fighting communist rule to secure their rights as
citizens and individuals.
Israel and Palestine: The

fighting for generations over a
little region called Palestine, next
to the Mediterranean Sea.
Though the region was once
Israel’s, it has been taken by several Empires over the years, leaving the region open for other

condition; a Jewish state would
exist within.
After World War II, the
United Nation divided Palestine

War was a remarkable victory for
Israel as they won back all the
country that was once theirs. This
included Jerusalem, Israel’s holy

Since then, peace has been
long in coming, with many treaties signed and much land exchanging hands. Just the day before the deadline to end the senseless violence, a fight broke out
between Jewish settlers and a few
Palestinians. This new breach of
the Sharm el-Sheikh treaty, which
ended three weeks of violence,
spun everyone into turmoil.
Hopefully peace talks will ensue
despite the broken treaty.
The Stock Market’s Terrifying
October
October is a month associated
with Halloween scares, but did
you know it’s also associated with
Stock Market horrors? Black
Thursday, a day of total hysteria
for many, happened October 29,
1929. It was the first crash of the
stock market and it crashed in
such a chaotic way as to make
things look even worse than they
were. Black Monday, an even
bigger stock market crash happened October 19, 1987. Investors lost one trillion dollars in investments, and the crash was one
of the biggest in history.
There has been two minor
crashes since then-one on Friday,
October 13, 1989, and one on
October 27, 1997. These crashes
were monitored by an automatic
system that ended the trading once
the selling of stock dropped to a
certain point. The system was put
in as a safety precaution after the
two big crashes in ‘29 and ‘87.
This October the stock market
seems more stable and experts
don’t believe there will be any
major drops in stock prices.

Yodeling Slim Clark?

Slim Clark is an 80 year old
cowboy/ yodeler who has recently
released a new album “78’s Reborn.” I recently sampled some
of Clark’s work (mind you I
couldn’t bear to listen to entire
horrible thing.) The portion I did
listen to reminded me why the
78’s aren’t reborn.
Yodeling and country are two
completely terrible different
things, or so I thought. Slim Clark
has combined the two and thus
created a whole new breed of bad
music.
One of the songs I sampled
was “Happy Cowboy Life.” It was
anything but happy. Mr. Clark
would sing some country western
lyrics then break into a yodel
That’s like playing basketball and
scoring a touch down!
You’ll probably never see any
Slim Clark albums at the local cd
store, but it still makes you just a
little angry that you might. If this
whole yodeling thing doesn’t
work out he could become “The
Real Slim Clarky.” Then again I
don’t know if we have room for 2
terrible rappers named Slim.

Those punksters from Blink182 are at it again, this time with
a live Album entitled “The Mark,
Tom, and Travis Show-The Enema Strikes Back.” The new cd
will feature more than a dozen
songs by Blink, including “Man
Overboard” a new single by the
group, along with all your favorite hits featured in Enema of the
State.
The cd should capture the finesse of a live Blink show. With
Blink-182’s antics and those famous one-liners.
The cd is only available until
the end of the year, so I would suggest picking up a copy as soon as
possible.
Overall I think this should be
a great cd and should be a great
addition to any cd collection. The
cd will be available on Election
Day, so if you get time between
voting and campaigning pick up

Chicken Soup for the VHS Soul

Saved from the Edge
This is a story that changed
my life. My name is Sarah and I
live in a small town in Vermont
and far from any major city. But
in this little town, where everyone knows everyone, a story unfolds that will change the way you
look at a lot of things.
The start of my 11th grade year
is one I’ll always remember.
Friends were back, classes were
easier and things were going
great! The first day of that year
is the one that I’ll remember the
most. Here’s how it all got
started.
As I walked home on that Friday, things seemed to going good.
But as I looked across the street, I
could tell that the kid on the other
side didn’t think so. He walked
slowly and had his head down and
seemed to be talking to himself.
I kept walking, not thinking too
much about it, although one thing
struck me as odd; he was carrying all of things home. He had his
books, all piled high in front of
his face. I continued on. But as I
kept walking, curiosity filled my
mind on why he had everything
with him. It couldn’t be because
of homework. No, not on the first
day of school. We never have
homework on the first day. So I
decided to walk over and talk to
him.
“Hey!” I said. He slowly
looked up and gave me a nod. “I
was wondering why you were carrying all this stuff with you. Lotta
homework?” I asked. “I just want
to study on some of this stuff before the class passes me up,” he
said. I kind of nodded my head at
him and went on to ask him all
about his life. He told me his name
was Brian and about his family.
It ended up, he was in my class
and had just move from New
York. We talked about everything. About sports, and school,
and about why he moved. Why he
moved didn’t seem to be a popular subject with him. He told of
trouble that surrounded him at his
old school, but quickly changed
the subject. So I didn’t ask anymore questions.
We soon reached my house
and as I walked up my front steps
he kept walking in his same slow
manner.
Later that night, I couldn’t
help but think of the sad guy that
I had met earlier in the day and
why he seemed to be so scared of
me and in what I had to say. I lay
awake all that night trying to figure all of my questions out. But
drowsiness caught me and I
drifted off asleep.
For the next several months,
I saw the guy in the halls, at lunch
and even in some of my classes.
We rarely spoke but I noticed
that something had changed about
him. He didn’t seem as sad anymore and looked confident. I still
wondered why, on the day that I
met him, he seemed so timid.
My junior year flew by and
my senior year started. I always
remembered Brian and the constant circles of questions that
seemed to go along with him in
my mind. I watched Brian a lot.
He had turned popular. He had
good grades and as many friends
as he would ever want. Soon senior year came close to the end
and graduation was soon to come.
Valedictorian and Salutatorian
were picked, and as many people
figured, Brian was named Valedictorian. No surprise to me or
any of my classmates.
Graduation came all too
quickly and the sorrows of leav-
ing our high school also came. As
we all sat there with our caps and
gowns on, we saw our four years
pass in our mind one more time.
Brian, of course, being the
Valedictorian, had to give a
speech about his years at the high
school. He told of the day his
family moved. He spoke of how
scared he was. But the thing that
brought tears to the eyes of everyone there was how he spoke of
me.
“As I walked home from
school, all books in hand, I remember what was running
through my head. How I didn’t fit
in at my old school and why I had
moved. See, I moved to Vermont
during the summer after my
sophomore year for one reason. I
was going through a depression.
I hated myself because I wasn’t
as popular or as rich as I wanted.
I was also scared of how others
viewed me. So as I walked home
I thought of how this high school
was going to be the same. And
after the stress and horror of me
not fitting in began to settle in, yet,
another year, I thought of one
thing, suicide! It was something
that has entered my mind before
in New York as I walked the
lonely halls of my high school,”
he admitted. “But!” he said, “ A
girl named Sarah saved my life
with the simple act of making me
feel that I was needed and liked.
She talked to me that first day as
I walked home with a million
thoughts running through my
head. The first thing she asked
was about why I was carrying all
the books home with me. The real
reason I had cleaned out my
locker and had all of my books
was to save my mom the hassle
of going to the school after I was
gone. And I would love to say
thank you Sarah.”
So that was it. This whole
time, I racked my brain, trying to
figure out why he seemed the way
he did. But now I know. I know
that I changed a life by just being
myself in trying to make someone feel comfortable.
The audience stood and applauded the speech and the touching story he had just told them,
and they cheered for me as Brian
descended from the stage and proceeded to give me flowers. With
that, tears filled my eyes, as the
mystery had been solved.
Dial Up

The beginning of my sophomore year was great until I had
the biggest fight my parents and I
have ever had. I remember dating a guy that I really liked, so
every chance I got, I’d call him. I
didn’t really care how much I tied
up the phone, I mean, that’s what
I wanted, and nothing was gonna
stop me. But mom and dad had
other plans. They made a 9:00 pm
phone curfew. So, now, there I
was, wanting to use the phone but
couldn’t. I decided that I would
call anyway, despite mom and
dad’s rule. And, of course, I got
caught. Now, I was grounded for
two weeks without the phone and
some other stuff. I was devastated,
so, one night, I snuck into my
sister’s room and used her phone
to call my boyfriend, and, needless to say, I got caught once
more.
Mom and Dad stopped trusting me and to earn their trust was
one of the hardest things I’ve ever
had to do.

The good, the bad, and the Napster

Have you ever listened
to an MP3? Have You ever
listened to a burned CD?
Chances are, you have and
chances are, you did it less than
legally.
This is what record companies
and many artist’s fear. You’re going to stop buying their CD’s and
start making your own. If you’ve
made your own CD you’ve probably used Napster.
Napster is a java-based program that allows chat, it also let’s
users have a hotlist to see when
their friends are on-line. But, this
is not what napster is famous for.
Napster allows the sharing of
MP3’s across the Internet.
What’s the big deal about sharing as opposed to just downloading MP3’s off of a website.
First, the reliability is much
better when sharing files because
the links to the songs you are
looking for are instantly updated.
While looking for a MP3 on a
search engine, you must realize
that it is updated roughly every
hour. This means that you have a
much better chance of having a
held responsible for sharing copyrighted material.
Should you download songs
and make your own CD’s? I
guess it’s your call. Will this
bring down the music industry?
Doubtful. Did the VCR bring
the movie industry to it’s knees?
Should record companys be
pointing fingers?

The selection is huge and you can
get virtually any song you could
possibly want. This scares record

argument is that there is nothing
wrong with the sharing that is
going on. There’s no downloading from a main computer system.
It’s just people transferring files.
Also, Napster can’t control what
is transferred. They even state in
their agreement that they can’t be

goodies. Many people don’t take
Halloween very seriously. Halloween was really important to
people a long time ago. Many religious groups were very serious
about Halloween, and it wasn’t
something they took lightly. Most
Halloween festivities are based on
folk beliefs concerning the supernatural forces and spirits of the
dead. That’s why people decorate their houses with pictures of
witches and ghosts.

Drivers Education
Students Get “Convinced”

On October 30th, Drivers
Education students from
Goreville and Vienna High
Schools took part in a program
designed to convince them to
buckle up. Students who wished
to ride Eastern Illinois
University’s “Convincer”, an interactive demonstration of a 7
mph head-on collision. The
Convincer was designed to show
the occupant what a crash of this
very small magnitude would feel
like, and then compare it to a
similar one of 60 mph.
The demonstration did its
part to show the importance of
safety belts in automobiles. After feeling the impact even at this
relatively slow speed, most students were no longer reluctant to
buckle up.
Later, Officer Dale Poole of
the Illinois State Police showed
the students the ISP roll-over
simulator, which demonstrated
the effects of a crash in which the
automobile was flipped. Officer
Poole demontrated the effects of
such a crash when the occupants
were wearing their seatbelts, as
well as when they were not. In
each “crash”, if the occupants
had been buckled up, neither
would have sustained major injuries.
The demonstrations have
helped to raise awareness of the
importance of seatbelts all over
Illinois. The ISP and Eastern Illinois University both plan on returning for second semester
Drivers Ed., so if you missed the
show this time, you can see it
again after Christmas.

ThE NeRd

There was a nerd inside my school,
People laughed and called him a fool.
He was probably the smartest, the most humble and kind
Nobody wanted to know what went on in his mind.
Then one day he missed the bus
His family got mad, and began to cuss.
Then the nerd thought, “I don’t have any friends”
So he took a gun and brought himself to his end.
All those friends he claimed not to have,
Showed up at his funeral on his behalf.
The bully that picked on him,
The kid that called him names,
The other kids that never let him play in any,
Basketball games.
All of those people that ridiculed and teased,
He had finally made them cry on their knees.
I am so glad that you have heard,
This tragic story of the nerd.
If there is a person
