PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
This week our students attended the Interschool Athletics
Carnival at Waikerie High School.
Congratulations to our athletes and ball games competitors who
proudly represented our school.
With daylight saving the weather will soon be cooler and
families are asked to support our school uniform policy by
ensuring students have the required winter items as detailed in
this newsletter. Uniform creates school pride and is an important
safety requirement so we can easily identify any non-current
students who may be on the site.
At the end of this term you will receive a report of your students
learning progress, assessed against either SACE or Australian

Important Year 9 Information for Term 2 2016: National
Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy 2016
The National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy
for Year 9 students will take place on Tuesday 10, Wednesday
11 and Thursday 12 May 2016. This is held in all schools across
Australia.
The aspects of literacy to be assessed are reading, writing and
language conventions (including spelling, punctuation and
grammar).
The aspects of numeracy to be assessed are number, algebra,
function and pattern, measurement, chance and data and space.
Students have been involved in practicing appropriate literacy
and numeracy assessment preparation strategies, not only in

Curriculum requirements. Please read the report carefully
and discuss learning progress with your child. Parent teacher
interviews with subject teachers are scheduled for the Middle
Campus on May 5th and for the Senior Campus on May 10th.
Within the report you will receive information about how to book
appointments using the Parent Teacher Online portal. We hope
this system will be an efficient process for you to book times,
please bring your student to the interviews as the partnerships
between parent, teacher and student are very important to
discuss next learning steps.
On the last day of term, dismissal will be at 2.20pm.

English and Mathematics classes but in all subject areas. Our
school curriculum has been engaging in literacy and numeracy
in all subjects so that our students will feel comfortable
approaching the NAPLAN week.
You can help your child prepare at home by informing them that
NAPLAN is another part of their schooling assessments which
track their learning. Please encourage them to do their best.
All year 9 students are expected to participate in the assessments
at the designated times each morning. However, if a student is
absent for a valid reason please notify the school on 8583 2004.
There will be catch up sessions of students who are identified as
absent on the day of the test but return to school within the week
scheduled for NAPLAN testing.
NAPLAN individual student reports will be distributed in
September and provide valuable feedback for the student,
parents/carers and teachers. You can use these NAPLAN
assessments as one tool to track the learning progress of your
child. There will be opportunities for you to discuss results with
teachers later in the year.

Glossop High School uses the NAPLAN data as one
assessment to track and monitor the literacy and numeracy
learning for each individual student. It is important data that
we use to determine the next learning steps for our students.

maintain our high standards when tracking student progress
and planning for further learning

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL – SENIOR CAMPUS
Community Learning Programs
Mt Gambier Exchange
Many community organisations develop and accredit their own
programs, and many of these are eligible for recognition towards
the SACE. Examples of such programs include Australian Music
Examinations Board, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and the
SA Country Fire Service.
Every year, many of our students gain credit towards their SACE
via these community developed programs.
I invite parents and students to review the list of these programs
and if they believe that they are eligible to gain credits through
these programs, they should contact me so that the necessary
paperwork can be completed.

The Mt Gambier exchange will once again be held at the end
of Term 2 and whilst this may seem a long time away the
organisation of this event has already begun.
One important part of the exchange is the ability to house the
exchange students here in the Riverland for free. We are once
again asking for families who might like to accommodate a
student from Mt Gambier to nominate with the school. This can
be done by ringing Michelle Tanner at the Senior Campus Front
Office on 8595 2677.
Holiday Sessions
Within this newsletter you will find the holiday study session
times. Many teachers willingly give up their time during our
students’ holidays to allow them to have extended sessions.
These longer sessions allow time to undertake a specialised
teaching program, that cannot be undertaken in the regular term
time.
An example of this is the Research Project session where
teachers plan to use two days to introduce, examine and write
the Evaluation section for the Research Project. This is one of
the three tasks that students are required to complete in this
subject and within this concentrated period it is expected that
those students that attend will be able to complete it, thereby
reducing the stress and workload in the second term.
Please encourage your child to attend these sessions as they will
certainly benefit greatly from them.
Signing in and out of school
When students come to school they are placed in our care and
as such it is important that we can account for them at all times.
As with many workplaces we therefore have a signing in and
signing out process through our Front Office so that we are
aware of who is onsite. This is obviously a requirement through
the WHS processes and becomes vitally important if there were
an evacuation required.
To aid us in ensuring students sign in an out when leaving the
site, during school hours parents should arrange to pick up and
drop off their child from the Front Office car park.

Assessment and Reporting at Glossop High School
Years 8-10
You will be receiving a school report regarding your child’s
learning progress and effort in each subject area on Friday 15
April 2016. If your child is absent, reports will be able to be
collected after 2.20pm. Please use these reports to reflect on
progress and discuss these reports with your child. At the middle
school, we assess based on the Australian Curriculum, which is
an Australia wide public school curriculum and report grading
is as follows:
C grade: Satisfactory achievement of what is expected at
year level
B grade: Good achievement of what is expected at year level\
A grade: Excellent achievement of what is expected at year
level
D grade: Partial achievement of what is expected at year
level
E grade: Minimal achievement of what is expected at year
level

EASTER IN THE HISPANIC WORLD
Where Are They Now?
In Week 8, the Year 10 Spanish class
taught the Year 8 Spanish students
about Easter in the Hispanic World.
The Year 8 students learnt about
how Easter is celebrated in a number
of Spanish speaking countries and
they discovered that along with a
strong Christian tradition, Easter is
celebrated by the giving of “el mono
de pascua” (an Easter cake), by
decorating the streets in the bright
and beautiful colours of Spring and
by partaking in parades throughout
cities and towns.
Glossop High School boasts such an array of successful past
students, some of whom have agreed to share their successes
with us!
In addition to teaching the Year 8s
about the event, the Year 10s also engaged them in making
Easter cards, completing an Easter quiz based on the PowerPoint
they showed them at the beginning of the lesson and Easter
Bingo. The Year 8s enjoyed the activities and the “Huevos de
la Pascua” (Easter eggs) they were rewarded with through their
participation.
Please fill us in on what
career pathway you have been
following since leaving school?
I moved to Adelaide to attend Flinders University to begin
Paramedic Studies. I also was in the SA Institute of Sport
and training and studying full time for 2 years. I also went
to NZ to play in their national competition as well as the
Australian Hockey League in 2011 where I was noticed by
the Hockeyroos selectors and in 2012 moved to Perth to train
with the Olympic Team as a junior. Since moving to Perth I
continued to study my Paramedic Degree on a part time basis
via correspondence and debuted for the Hockeyroos following
the London Olympic Games at the Champions Challenge.
Since then I have won a Gold Medal at the 2014 Glasgow
Commonwealth Games, World Cup silver and Champions
Trophy silver medal along with a few more silvers!!!!
One tradition that we celebrated within our Spanish classes was
the making of “torrijas” (Spanish toast). The students enjoyed
seeing how they were made and eating them in class, as we
learnt more about this special celebration and its place in the
Spanish speaking world.

We will post regular ‘where are they now’ articles in the
hope of celebrating some of our own and motivating and
encouraging current students to work to their full potential so
they too can live the dream!

How did Glossop High School best support you in
achieving your goals?
They helped me achieve my sporting goals while continuing
to achieve highly with my academic goals. It wasn’t always
easy as I was away for several two week blocks throughout a
year but with the help of the staff and ability to be organised
I was able to excel in both areas of my life. I also grew as a
person through many different roles and programs available
at Glossop High like the Peer Support in grade 10, Hughes
House Captain in grade 10-12 and Deputy Head Prefect in
grade 12 allowing me to extend my leadership skills within
the school community.

What are your future goals?
To go to the Rio Olympics, Gold Coast Commonwealth
Games in 2018, become a fully qualified paramedic and
sounds silly but own a home in the near future!
Do you have any tips for current students?
Be organised not only in your academic life so things are
done on time but in general life so things transition and flow
smoothly for you in all facets of your lives. Also something
I learnt along the way is to not be afraid to ask for help when
you need it and try new skills and things because you never
know if you are going to be great at something until try it.
