Rio Grande Electric Cooperative, Inc. Update November 2012 A Message From The General Manager/CEO By Dan Laws “Thank you for this sumptuous meal (I hope I don’t get sick from eating this stuff.)” I don’t know about where you live, but here in Brackettville fall has definitely arrived. The mornings are cool and crisp—just the way I like it. In fact, fall is my favorite season. I enjoy the other seasons, but there is something unique about the fall. The artistry, with which God’s creation sheds its foliage in preparation for winter, is nothing short of spectacular. Commencement of the High School football season, Oktoberfest, Halloween, and then my favorite holiday season -- Thanksgiving and Christmas, all usher in feelings of warmth, family, and peace for me. We will soon celebrate Thanksgiving. Families will gather anticipating the carving of the poor winged fowl that so graciously made the supreme sacrifice in order to adorn our tables. We will overeat, fall into easy chairs and watch football. Or, we will overeat and travel to the other set of parents’ or childrens’ home and do it all again. Or, we will overeat, be taken, against our will, by the couch monster, and forced to take a nap. Or, we will overeat and…well, you fill in the tradition you prefer. These are all good things and they speak volumes about everything that is good about the American way of life, but I hope you will look beyond the good and celebrate the great as well. What is great is the giving of thanks. The Bible teaches that we should give thanks with a grateful heart. Seems a bit redundant doesn’t it? Can one give thanks and not also be grateful? Well, I don’t know; let’s try a few examples. Thank you for this sumptuous meal (I hope I don’t get sick from eating this stuff); thank you for this great tie (Where am I going to wear this thing); thank you for cutting my hair (I would have liked it even better if you had done what I asked). No one sets out to be disingenuous, it happens because we all too often speak from our intellect rather than our heart. We say thank you but it is not what we really feel. The dichotomy exists between our intellect and our belief system, or in other words, between what we think and what we feel. Intellectually I know it is appropriate to say thank you when someone has gone to some amount of trouble on my behalf. My thank you, unfortunately, is without substance when spoken from my intellect. I can’t be truly thankful until I contemplate the trouble I really was to someone. I must put myself in the other person’s place and imagine what they were thinking and feeling. When I do that my intellectual thank you is supported by heartfelt gratefulness. You and I have much to be thankful for. Consider God’s work in your life and be grateful. And as I have suggested before at this time of the year, make this holiday season special and forgive past wrongs. Celebrate with friends and family and do it as if you will never have the opportunity again, because the simple truth is life may never be this way again. I hope as you give thanks with a grateful heart, Rio Grande Electric Cooperative is on your list of things for which you are thankful. Reprinted from the November 2004 Update. Wishing you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. Rio Grande Electric Co-op November, 2012 1 67th annual meeting roundup The Fort Stockton Middle School gymnasium was transformed in to a colorful venue for the 67th Rio Grande Electric Cooperative Annual Membership Meeting Saturday, October 13. Registration began at 8:00 a.m. and went smoothly and quickly, especially for those who brought their bar coded registration cards. Each membership received attendance prizes, which included a customized lantern and multi-tool. There were 131 memberships registered by 10:00 a.m., and 16 memberships which registered after the meeting started. Upon completion of registration, members had coffee and pastries, and viewed the Member Services booth, arcing demonstration, and equipment displays. Many also chose to go up in a bucket truck for a lineman’s eye view of Fort Stockton! Manager of Military Utility Privatization Services Javier Solis welcomed guests to the meeting, instructed them on the procedures for the question and answer session, and Members gave the linemen of RGEC a standing ovation. introduced the Spanish translator, Kim Dutchover, who briefly asked if any members present needed translation services. Solis then told those parents in attendance about the “Kid’s Korral”, where children would be supervised in order for their parents to be able to enjoy the meeting. Assisting RGEC employees with wrangling duties in the Kids’ Korral were members of the Pecos County 4-H, who volunteered as part of their community service project. Other 4-H members assisted with hospitality duties, such as coffee refills. These polite young men and women did a wonderful job! Mayor Bill Lannom welcomed guests to Fort Stockton and expressed his appreciation to RGEC for selecting his city as the site of the meeting. The business meeting was officially called to order by board president Stephen Haynes. Fort Stockton High School Choir student Grace Kalka delivered a moving rendition of the National Anthem. Boy Scout Troop 54 of Fort Stockton posted the colors, and Owen Davis of the Pecos County 4-H Club led the Pledge of Allegiance. Mr. Felix Kneuper of the Fort Stockton Church of Christ delivered the invocation. Two Special Drawings were held to kick off the meeting. These were for attending the meeting, and having returned the Reservation Card by September 30, and for registering using the Registration Card. Winner of the reservation card drawing was There’s nothing like a bucket truck ride to Hubert and Flo Hale of Brackettville, and the registration card drawing was won by start the day! Stanley and Anna Frohlich, of Brackettville. This was followed by the drawing of ten regular door prizes, each valued at $100 or more. Door prizes are donated by the vendors with which RGEC conducts business throughout the year. In spite of the poor economy, the donations were very generous this year. Vendors donated over 105 prize packages, each valued at a minimum of $100. The most valuable individual door prize was valued at approximately $450! Total value of all door prizes amounted to $11,940. See listing of prizes and photos on the following pages. 2 November, 2012 Rio Grande Electric Co-op Board President Stephen Haynes called for the Official Notice of Meeting and Minutes of the 2011 Annual Meeting. A motion was made and seconded to dispense with the reading of the minutes. Haynes then requested collection of the question submission forms. After more door prizes, Mr. Haynes again took the microphone to introduce the current board of directors and the candidates vying for a place on the board, and presented director service awards for those directors who had completed terms on the board. Those being recognized were Cindy Whitehead, Priscilla Parsons, Mark Daugherty, Frank Archuleta. Mr. Haynes then introduced attorney Lea Ream, President of Davidson,Troilo, Ream & Garza, who announced the results of the director election. Board President Stephen Haynes addressed the crowd. Ms. Ream explained that the election was conducted by the firm of Survey and Ballot Systems, and the results were provided only to her. She said the percentage of those voting amounted to 15.68% of the membership, The complete election results appear on page __. Mr. Haynes presented the President’s Address, in which he emphasized the financial stability of RGEC, and outlined the growth, especially in the Carrizo Springs and Eagle Pass areas. This growth, he said, necessitated the expansion of the operations office in this region. He said Fort Bliss continues to provide a good source of revenue, and, combined with that of Laughlin AFB, these contracts allow RGEC to continue upgrading infrastructure and improving reliability system-wide. Haynes said that, while dealing with the military can be challenging at times, the margins generated by these contracts are beneficial to all members. Also discussed was the new substation planned for the Del Rio area, to accommodate the increase in load due to the Hwy. 79 bypass. Mr. Haynes concluded by saying that he and his fellow board members all want the same thing for RGEC, including reliable, quality service at the cheapest rate that can be obtained. He assured the group the board would continue to work together and would strive to accomplish these goals. Treasurer Rowdy Holmsley explained RGEC’s finances. Treasurer Rowdy Holmsley presented his report, in which he called attention to a few of the more significant items listed in the financial report, which was provided in the programs distributed to members prior to the start of the meeting, and which appeared on the inside back cover of the September issue of the RGEC edition of Ranch and Rural Living Magazine. Mr. Holmsley explained that, though RGEC carries what would be a significant amount of debt to “regular people” like him, he had come to realize that the Co-op’s “Plant”, what it is worth, amounted to as much as six (6) times the amount of the debt. Additionally, he stated the amount of debt had been greatly reduced over the past 10 years. Restructuring loans will save RGEC $2.5 million over 25 years. Holmsley called attention to a slide in the presentation, which clearly illustrated his point, contrasting the amount of debt to the value of the Cooperative, in terms of what it owns, or Total Utility Plant. (Slide appears above.) Rio Grande Electric Co-op November, 2012 3 It was then time for GM/CEO Dan Laws to conduct the Question and Answer segment. All questions asked at the meeting, as well as those for which there was not time, will be answered in the next edition of this magazine. Mr. Laws began the introduction of special guests, which included members of RGEC’s Member Advisory Committees for each area, members of the media, representatives of major companies with which the Co-op conducts business during the year, and RGEC’s team of legal authorities. Also introduced was Thomas Kincaid, Jr., a member of RGEC, and currently a candidate for State Representative, District 74, who addressed the gathering briefly. standing ovation, as in previous years. Laws thanked the membership for coming and explained that annual meetings are required by law. He said he enjoys the meetings so much, he would hold them even if they were not required. Mr. Laws then introduced the linemen as “the heartbeat of Rio Grande Electric Cooperative.” They received a Due to time constraints, Dan Laws opted to forego his customary CEO report, stating the important topics had been addressed in the Board President’s Report presented by Mr. Haynes, and in the Treasurer’s Report, presented by Mr. Holmsley. Mr. Laws again told the crowd that they need not wait for an annual meeting to ask questions or address any concerns about their membership in the Co-op or their electric service. Having concluded the business portion of the meeting, it was time for the Texas humor of featured entertainer, Mary Sue Koontz Nelson. Mrs. Nelson regaled the crowd with anecdotes from her life on the HK Ranch, and all the adventures and misadventures that came with it. She had the group in stitches as she related her experience with a young cowhand, who kept pestering them to borrow money to make a demo record. It was a short few years later when she again encountered George Strait, and has wished ever since she had invested in his career! Anecdote after anecdote had the crowd giggling and working up an appetite for some good food. Immediately after the entertainment portion of the event, a catered barbecue lunch with all the trimmings was served by RGEC’s employees, who were assisted by volunteers from the Pecos County 4-H Club. It was a hearty meal, topped off by delicious peach cobbler for dessert. The remaining door prize drawings were held, and then the big finale -- the Grand Prize Drawing for a “retired” F150 Co-op Pickup. The winner was the membership of Kathy and Jimmy Bencomo of Fort Davis, represented at the meeting by Mrs. Bencomo.
