7th September, 2016
FROM THE PRINCIPALS OFFICE
Here it is, Week 8, spring has sprung and the school holidays are just around the corner.
Wow! Where are the weeks going?
There is of course, a mountain of work to get through over the coming weeks and some very, very
exciting events to look forward to.
It’ll be go, go, go during Week 9.
CELEBRATING THE ARTS
Our brilliant choir will be performing at the Riverside Theatre in Parramatta on
Monday, 12th September. Thirty children from the middle and upper primary will
join forces with children from other schools in our district to form a combined
choir as part of “Celebrating the Arts.”
I couldn’t be more proud of their efforts and can hardly wait to see the
performance. Notes finalising the event and those very impressive choir T-shirts
will be sent home tomorrow.
YEAR 6 FUN DAY
The count down for the Year 6 FUN DAY has begun… just nine more sleeps. The girls and boys are
getting more excited by the minute. We try very hard to eliminate problems by making this a cashless
day! Please help us with the organisation of this event by making sure that you have done the following:
1. Paid for your tokens in advance… extra notes have been sent home or can be picked up at the
main office.
2. Ordered your sausage sizzle… all catering is done in advance.
3. Signed up to help out with a stall if you have a little time to spare.
If your child is one of the big kids, they will be busy baking cupcakes and making jelly on Thursday
next week. Don’t forget to send in your cake mix and jelly donations and make sure your child comes
prepared for the “COOK OFF”… that means an apron, utensils and muffin tins. (Miss Hoy has sent out
a list of requirements.)
FUN DAY is a mufti day too. It is almost too much fun to have on one day.
P.S. It’s just for kids, sorry families you are not invited unless you have arranged to help with one of
the stalls.
MAMMOTH GARDENING BEE
NOW FOR A VERY PERSONAL PLEA… The weather is warming up and those nasty weeds are on the
move.
With Kindy Orientation just around the corner, I am really anxious to have Yates Avenue P.S. looking
“Only the Best.”
When:
Saturday, 17th September 2016… between 9:00am and 2:00pm
Who:
Weeders, Hedgers, Mulchers, Pruners and anyone with a vague interest in
gardening who would like to lend a hand.
Where:
Meet outside OOSH - we’ll break up into groups and tackle as much as possible.
What to bring:
As much of your own equipment as possible (label everything) from gloves, shovels
and rakes to wheelbarrows.
Please send me a quick note or call the school on 9874 6302 and let me know if you can help out.
Many hands make light work I promise!!!! My fingers are crossed for a great turn-out.

We still need permission notes to be returned for special events and excursions. If you have
made a “payment online” already, please ensure that you follow-up with those very important
permission notes. We need to have a permission note for all activities, so irrespective of what
you are doing payment-wise please make sure those very important notes find their way to the
classroom teacher.
On a more serious note, there are a few safety issues I would like to bring to your attention and
in doing so; I encourage you to have a talk with your children at home.
PEDESTRIAN AND ROAD SAFETY
This is an on-going reminder to be very conscious of both you and your
child’s safety when coming in and out of the school. Please use the paths
and pedestrian crossing at all times. Your good example is essential if we
are going to get those road safety messages embedded in our children’s
minds.
I would also like to remind you that no one should be driving into the school
grounds without prior permission. We have had a few occasions lately
where parents have parked in the teacher’s carpark and driven into the
school grounds from Yates Avenue. In the name of fairness and with
concern to everyone’s safety please only enter the grounds on foot.
CHILD PROTECTION
This is a mandatory program in the PDHPE curriculum and a very important issue that also needs to be
addressed within families. Please take some time to discuss these sessions with your children and be
prepared to have some very frank and open discussions around this topic. The upper primary students
in particular have asked lots of questions which fall a little outside our school program which would be
best answered by parents or caregivers.
IOANA PARK
Many of you will have noticed the council work being undertaken along the creek bed that runs between
King St and Yates Avenue. The rejuvenation of this corridor has left the creek bed exposed and as a
result the children are quite interested in what’s going on. We have talked about safety issues related
to creek bed and this area and I would suggest that a little family excursion and further talk at home
might be in order. It is going to be a very lovely area when all the work is complete, but I would hate to
think that children weren’t fully aware of the dangers relating to unsupervised play in that area.

PRESCHOOL ARE BEGINNING THEIR TRANSITION
TO BIG SCHOOL!
This week our Dolphin and Turtle children are beginning their transition to big school.
The Dolphins enjoyed our lunch with K/1D and K/1W on Monday.
The Turtles will be visiting K/1D and K/1W on Friday.
Over the next few weeks Preschool will visit K/1D and K/1W to share meals and see their
classrooms and some of their school day routine.
We have moved our fairy garden to a new area outdoors and have been busy adding new
treasures as well as looking for the many different bugs and insects we can find in our garden.
Preschool enjoyed a visit from Lesley and her dog “Gibbs” on
Tuesday where we learnt about being safe around dogs. Turtle
children will have their dog safety visit on Thursday this week.

ROALD DAHL DAY
As you already know, we will be celebrating the one hundredth birthday of beloved
children’s author Roald Dahl with a special day at school on Wednesday, 21st
September, 2016. This is a wonderful opportunity for the students to learn more
about Roald Dahl’s books and their characters and to have lots of fun celebrating all
things Roald Dahl.
Our day will begin with a dress up parade under the K-2 COLA. All of the students are
encouraged to dress as their favourite Roald Dahl character or to wear yellow (which
was Roald Dahl’s favourite colour).
After this, the students will participate in a range of activities about a variety of
different Roald Dahl stories. The students will rotate around the classrooms and will
visit a number of teachers whilst completing these activities.
Our very exciting Roald Dahl Day will conclude with a screening of one of his most
loved stories - Esio Trot – in the school hall. This is a beautiful story which I am sure
all of the students will enjoy. To enhance the movie experience, all students will
receive a bag of popcorn to enjoy while they are watching the film.
Please note that ‘Esio Trot’ is rated PG. If you would prefer for your child not to
watch this film, please advise your child’s class teacher prior to Roald Dahl Day.
As you can see, we have a wonderful day planned and I look forward to seeing all of the
students in their costumes having a fantastic time celebrating the wonderful world of
Roald Dahl.

Yates Avenue OOSH has become the breeding ground of Chess

We are thankful for those few parents who stick around to
volunteer an hour or two of their time to verse us in chess and
challenge us to do our best.
Congratulations to Jake for being our current Chess Champion.

such a wonderful Art hour each week.
This month’s
favorite meal is:
Scones with Jam
and Cream
Recipe of the Month:
Scones with Jam and Cream
What you need:
Plain flour, for dusting
3 cups self-raising flour
80g butter, cubed
1-1 1/4 cups milk
Jam and whipped cream, to serve
How you make it: Pre heat oven to
200°C. Lightly dust a flat baking tray
with plain flour. Sift self-raising flour
into a bowl. Using your fingertips,
rub butter into flour. Make a well in
the centre. Add 1 cup of milk. Mix
with a flat-bladed knife. Turn onto a
lightly floured surface. Knead gently
(don't knead dough too much or
scones will be tough). Pat dough into
a 2cm-thick round. Using a 5cm
(diameter) round cutter, cut out 12
rounds. Press dough together and
cut out remaining 4 rounds. Place
scones onto prepared baking tray,
1cm apart. Sprinkle tops with a little
plain flour. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes
or until golden and well risen.
Transfer to a wire rack. Serve warm
with jam and cream.
