Our brick is manufactured to meet or exceed the requirements of the ASTM C216 Severe Weather Grade. A minimal amount of inspection and maintenance will ensure that clay brick cladding will endure for many years to come. For further details, please contact Hanson’s technical services. Brick Veneer The brickwork on a building is a highly durable wall finish. Between the brick and the backup wall there is an air cavity that provides both a capillary break and a drainage path for moisture. Should moisture penetrate the veneer (a normal occurrence), the moisture will flow down the cavity to the flashing and out of the weep holes, protecting the more moisture-sensitive materials of the backup wall. Color & Texture Color of brick and texture variation within any production run is an inherent part of the manufacturing process. It is not possible to include these variations in photography and normal sampling. Different types of mortar joints and the color of the mortar do affect the overall look of brickwork and can lead to a perceived color difference. Waterproofing Sealers Hanson Brick does not approve of the use of waterproofing sealers. Sealers can affect the breathability of the brickwork and reduce the durability and life expectancy of the brick due to water retention. Efflorescence Efflorescence is a white powdery deposit of water soluble salts sometimes found on the brick surface. Efflorescence is not harmful to brick masonry. Once the moisture within the building materials used in construction dries out to the ambient humidity, no further efflorescence should be expected and should disappear of its own accord with normal weathering. *Source: American Institute of Architects. top right Palomino Wire Cut/ Palomino Wire Cut Medium middle right Select Red Semi Smooth Flashed bottom right Select Red Semi Smooth Flashed Carolina Collection Architectural Brick Guide 13 Limited Lifetime Product Warranty Hanson Brick (Manufacturer) warrants from the date of purchase by original buyer (Homeowner) for a period of 101 years to the Homeowner and subsequent transferees that the brick which is manufactured and sold by Hanson Brick and which is installed in the Homeowner’s Residence (the Brick) is free from defects in material and workmanship, is in compliance (to the extent applicable to the type of brick sold) with pertinent grading rules and the following specifications of the American Society for Testing Materials (i) C216 standard specification for facing brick, (ii) C62 standard specification for building brick, (iii) C902 standard specification for pedestrian and light traffic paving brick, and (iv) ASTM C-55 standard specification for concrete brick, in each case as in effect on the date applicable when this Limited Warranty issues, and will not fail structurally because it does not comply with such specifications. This Warranty is subject to the following Limitations and Exclusions: LIMITATIONS AND EXCLUSIONS: This Limited Warranty does not apply to failure, damage, deterioration, or color change to the Brick resulting from: (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7) (8) (9) (10) (11) faulty building methods or in structural defects; failure or cracking of brick due to settling of the Residence or subsidence; incorrect use of mortar or deterioration of mortar (all mortar joints must be full); inferior masonry workmanship including that which does not comply with BIA standards in BIA Tech Notes 7-B (April 1985), specifically excluding flush, raked, and extruded joints; use of brick for soffits, sills, caps as excluded in BIA Tech Notes 36 and 36A (Jan. 1988); use of brick for sidewalks, mailboxes, and all areas other than the walls of the Residence; non-compliance with applicable building codes; storm, flood, hurricane, earthquake, tornado, lightening, fire or other Acts of God; collision, vandalism, war, civil unrest or other accidental or intentional events; deterioration from the effects of acid rain or other pollution; actions of or materials provided by any person other than Hanson Brick. EXCLUSIVE REMEDY Any claim arising under this Limited Warranty must be promptly submitted in writing to the Manufacturer and must be accompanied with proof of Homeowner’s purchase. If any of the Brick does not comply with this Limited Warranty, Hanson Brick will at its own expense and within a reasonable period of time, replace and or repair in its sole discretion defective Brick. Hanson Brick shall have the right, but not the obligation, to have its own representatives verify the nature, extent, and case of alleged defects. If the parties cannot resolve a claim under this Limited Warranty, any controversy will be settled by arbitration through the American Arbitration Association in accordance with its Construction Industry Arbitration Rules, and judgment on the arbitrator’s award will be entered by any court with jurisdiction. The remedy of replacement and or repair shall be the sole and exclusive remedy for any breach of this Limited Warranty, and under no circumstances shall Hanson Brick be liable for any incidental, special, or consequential damages resulting from any breach of this warranty or alleged defect in the Brick, although Hanson expressly disclaims any other warranty than those expressly set forth herein, any implied warranty of merchantability which may nevertheless be available to Homeowner shall be limited to the duration of this Limited Warranty or the expiration of the applicable Statutes of Limitations, whichever is sooner. Hanson Brick expressly disclaims any and all other warranties of any kind whatsoever as to its Brick including but not limited to express or implied warranties of fitness for particular purposes sold, description, or quality of the Brick. Hanson makes no warranty as to the aesthetic qualities of the Brick. This warranty gives Homeowner and subsequent transferees specific legal rights, but they may also have other rights that vary from state to state. Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation or exclusion may not apply to the Homeowner and subsequent transferee. Reducing the consumption of resources and increasing resource efficiency are the foundations of sustainable business. The following are some of the achievements over the past decade and the goals for the future. Durability One of the basic requirements for sustainability is durability – products that last as long as the building, requiring minimum maintenance and repair. Hanson clay brick is manufactured to meet or exceed the ASTM/CSA standards for durability. Extensive research and ongoing quality control testing ensure that these products provide the intended service. Resource Management Clay brick is manufactured from clay or shale extracted from quarries in close proximity to the plant. Almost all plants have Environmental Management Systems in place to control effluent, emissions and resource extraction. The quarries are managed to ensure a long life of high-quality consistent material. At the end of the quarry life, the quarry is rehabilitated and in many cases is used for residential development. Once mining operations are complete, the land is carefully and meticulously backfilled and returned to a state as close as possible to what it had been, to ensure that it continues to offer future generations equivalent potential for use and development. Reduced Energy Consumption Reducing energy use is a key component of sustainability. In 2004, the amount of energy required to manufacture a clay brick was just 50% of what it was in 1981. Hanson Brick has continued to improve on this, further reducing fuel use by 10%. Emissions The savings in fuel use since 2004 have also resulted in significant reduction in emissions, a reduction of approximately 85,000 tons of CO2. One third of the clay brick plants have scrubbers which largely eliminate emissions, and more scrubbers are planned with upgrades to existing plants and construction of new plants. Hanson has spent millions of dollars in upgrading plants and making them more efficient and environmentally friendly. 16 Carolina Collection Architectural Brick Guide Recycled Material No material used to manufacture clay brick ends up in landfill. Any waste green (unfired) brick is fed back into the system. Some plants use the fired brick as grog as part of the raw material. Where waste fired brick is not used as grog, it is either crushed and sold as landscaping material, or it is used to repair and maintain quarry roads. Some plants use waste ceramic tile or pots, bottom ash from power stations or waste scrubber lime as part of the raw material for the brick. Some initiatives under investigation include: • the use of sawdust in the brick • waste glycerin as a kiln fuel • shale from tunnel excavation as raw material • use of fly ash as cement replacement in roof tiles (Supplementary Cementitious Materials) Most plants use recycled material for the packaging of the cubes. Regional Material Because of the geographical spread of Hanson clay brick plants, most urban areas in the USA and Canada are within 500 miles (800 km) of a brick or tile plant. Quarries which supply raw materials are generally situated in close proximity to the plant. The LEED Plant Locator on the Hanson website is a useful tool that lists all plants within 500 miles (800 km) from a given project based on the zip code. (see www.hansonbrick.com). Transportation Brick is transported by rail and truck, but mostly by truck. Computer software programs are used for load planning, to minimize trips and to ensure full loads. In some areas, GPS and on-board computers are used to facilitate deliveries. Managers and drivers are measured in terms of miles per load delivered. Communities Although Hanson Brick and Tile is a large company with plants throughout a large part of the USA and Canada, we operate as a series of independent local businesses, providing jobs in mainly rural areas. Culture of Environmental Sensitivity Our goal is to make our employees more environmentally sensitive and to develop a culture within the organization. As part of this goal, a survey was carried out early in 2008 of all the plant and transportation managers relating to environmental issues. This survey is to benchmark the current situation so that we can measure improvements over time.
