These were the words spoken recently when Porsche won the 84th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This year Toyota seemed to be the team to beat but with just a few minutes remaining the leading Toyota pulled to the side of the track and Porsche took the lead through to the checkered flag. This the 18th overall win for Porsche and it is not likely the last! It’s great to see the technology used in the racing cars trickle down in some variation to be used in the street cars. The hybrid and new turbo technology is a direct descendant of the racing programs run by Porsche. This month, I am once again writing this trackside but this time at our home track of MidOhio. The second to last week of June, I spent the entire week there with three different organizations. My time was spent instructing new students, coaching a race driver in a series and also driving; both in open lapping sessions and in a race. The instruction portion of the week was with, I know I shouldn’t say it, but The Ferrari Club of America. Ferrari Club was holding their annual meet this year in Columbus that’s similar to our Porsche Parade. They host a Driver’s Education event in conjunction with the rest of their activities, so I was invited to participate as an instructor. I was also selected to be one of 9 judges for the prestigious Coppa GT award which involved a judged concours event requiring a 95 point or higher score, a highly detailed technical inspection of the car requiring a 100% score, and an ontrack driving portion that showed the performance of the car. After the driving portion concluded, we had a long debate to select the eventual winner. Not only did the winner have a top notch Ferrari Testarosa but he could wheel it around Mid-Ohio pretty well and there was certainly some stiff competition to be judged out of the nine cars after the track sessions. It was a great experience to participate with another club and also gain new ideas into future things our club could do. Hopefully in the near future, we can put some of those ideas in motion and continue to improve our club and create new events for you to enjoy! Earlier in the month of June, I pre-ran the driving portion of the Catawba Island Club event July 16-17th. It was a great day weather wise for cruising along the lake taking notes and also taking in the scenery and stops I have planned along the route. Porsche of North Olmsted is sponsoring the CIC event and thanks to them we will be seeing some cars of theirs likely participate in the drive from their dealership to CIC! They will also be covering the two drink tickets each person receives with their paid dinner ticket. Door prizes and best-of-car show prize will also be donated by PNO. Following the CIC event, we have our PittRace Drivers Education weekend sponsored by Porsche of Beachwood July 23-24th. Not only will we have a Driver’s Education event that weekend on the race track; but we will also be hosting an autocross there as well. Porsche of Beachwood will also be sponsoring our annual member’s dinner Saturday night, so come out and check out the fantastic facility that is PittRace and get some great food and drink as well! I am excited to see both our local dealers support our club to the level that they are. There’s a lot of behind the scenes work that they do for us as a Club. We are grateful for them allowing us to use their facilities for events and providing funding and other resources for us to give our members a great experience. If you see any of the dealership staff, at either of our upcoming dealer sponsored events, please make sure to thank them for their continued support of NORPCA. |2| 2016 norpca officers *President Bryan Lingruen 4450 Ridgestone Way. In early 2005 I was the first employee that Bruce hired after buying Stoddard Imported Cars from Porsche Holdings late in 2004. After running several other businesses, Bruce wanted to work with his strongest passion and do something in the automotive business. As a long-time Stoddard customer he thought about buying the dealership. Some initial inquiries didn’t go far, but after a time, the voice on the other end seemed more receptive. Talking with customers back then, I would say Bruce was a Porsche enthusiast like any of us, but instead of having 1 or 2, he had a whole dealership. From what I saw, Bruce seemed happiest to talk to customers about our cars and show them what the cars and the dealership was all about. When Penske Automotive Group bought the dealership in 2011, Bruce maintained the vintage parts business and “Stoddard” name –moving the operation to Highland Heights. Since then Bruce has add NLA parts in Reno and is just finishing a deal to take over the LA Literature meet/toy show. Bruce grew up in Youngstown and is now living in Shaker Heights with his wife Shelley Roth. While Bruce has been devoting his time to working with our Porsche experience, Shelley has been running Pierre’s Ice Cream that she owns. (Some of you may recall the ice cream freezer at Stoddard a decade ago, now you know the rest of the story) Bruce has been a car enthusiast since he was young, owning a wide variety of cool stuff: Alfa, Jag, Shelby, Audi, Saab, etc…. The first Porsche that captivated his attention was a black mid 70’s Targa that a friend had. After the first drive he had to have one someday. About a decade later he bought his first Porsche – a red ’83 Targa. Several Porsches have come and gone since. Many of us have seen his current collection of beautiful 911, 912,930 models ranging from the late ‘60’s to 2012. (Come to the NOR Garage Tour on August 14 and see the whole collection—Ed.) I even managed to convince him to trade his Audis for a Macan last year. If you don’t know Bruce – don’t hesitate to say hello when you see him at Stoddard Porsche Parts or any other Porsche event that he’s at. You’ll hear an interesting story and look forward to seeing him again. | 11 | June Anniversaries & New Members Pat Ellert YEARS MEMBER 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 37 Steven & Michael Lannoch 33 Dr. Andrew & Rene Gunn 27 Ronald & Barbara Koehnle 21 William & Felicia Moore 16 Herbert & Julie Guenther 15 Nicholas Sarris & Clio Gemelas 15 Douglas Miller 14 Patrick & Tammy Gavin 14 Bonnie & Robert Munz 14 Bill Kemper 13 Paul Radey 11 Kenneth & Margaret Galayda 10 Roger Frank & Heidi Modarelli-Frank 10 Nick & Nick Jr. Demilta 9 Michael & Kathleen Marotta 8 James Flynn 8 Paul & Lori Hinman 8 Matthew Gobec 8 Erik & John Weyls 6 Gene Hauck & Joan Pistone 6 Mark Peroni 6 Garry & Landa Simmons Sr. 5 Donald & RuAn Thompson 5 Christopher Ceska 5 Robert & Lois Barbero 5 Douglas Geisler 5 Keith & Rebecca Holliday 5 Richard Klingshirn 5 Charles Ryhal 4 Merilee Marshall 4 Nathan & Kathleen Babb 4 Aaron Jasnow & Kristy Welshhans 4 Steve Adam Schwartz 3 David & Linda Crawford 3 Denise Cipiti 3 Philip & Kyle Ozan 2 Paul & Susan Kramer 2 James Kraus 2 Sam & Anne Arcara 2 Pierre McCormick 1 Thomas & Marilyn Aylward NEW MEMBERS George Hardiman Brecksville 1984 911 Carrera Corey Head Avon Lake 2011 Panamera 4S William Schabel Lakewood 2014 Boxster Matt Swain Huron 2017 911 Carrera Mark Tepper Brecksville 2016 911 Turbo Tony Zabiegala Independence 2016 Cayman S Richard Zonar Lakewood 1979 911 SC TRANSFERS IN David Principi Warren 1978 911 SC Mark Valentine Richfield 2014 Cayman | 12 | Mark Baran Steven Began Chris Daniels Marc & Gretchen Garofoli Ryan Krysiak Nicholas Olson & Shelley Fraley Michael McDonnell Tim Sakmar Mark Sims Board Meeting Minutes Jim Forcina June 2016 Minutes Attendees: Bryan Lingruen, Brad Kennett, Ed Baus, Jim Forcina, Jon Giese, Walt and Pat Ellert, RuAn Thompson, Keith Inniss, Les Checel, Shannon McCue, Karl Kleinert, Bill Stewart, Bob McDonald Old Business: The March minutes were approved. Thank you! | 14 | NOR at Pitt Race Complex, July 23-24 by Diane Baus Porsche Beachwood and NORPCA are teaming up to bring you a day of driving followed by a dinner. Take a beautiful drive out to Wampum PA (just 13 miles over the Ohio border into PA) to Pitt International Race Complex. When you come out there you can participate in the autocross, a high performance driving school, or stay to watch and have dinner. Pitt Race is a multiplex event offering viewing of a multitude of driving activity such as go kart, skid pad, autocross and, of course, the race track. While we are there the American Solar Challenge (ASC) will also be in action. American Solar Challenge is a competition to design, build and race solar-powered cars across the country; something else neat to watch. Have you ever wanted to win admission to a drivers education event? We now have a way for you to do that. There will be time carved out in the day for drivers education students to compete in the autocross. Likewise at that time the autocross participants can take part in the drivers education school. What is an autocross? Autocross gives you an opportunity to negotiate a course laid out with pylons in an open area such as a parking lot. You compete against yourself and other drivers in your class for the best time. Safety and technical requirements must be met. Contact John Hulick at [email protected] for more information. What is a High Performance Driving School? Driver Ed provides the opportunity to experience the performance potential of your Porsche in a safe, controlled environment. You will receive classroom instruction in safety and high-performance driving techniques, and drive your own car on a road racecourse. This is not a racing school, but you get instruction from an experienced instructor, who rides with you. You learn proper braking, cornering, and track-reading skills in these two-day events. Safety, medical, and technical requirements must be met. A typical event is two days long (Saturday & Sunday). In addition to the classroom instruction and on-track driving, you will have opportunities to ride on the track with your instructor, meet a bunch of great people during the day and at a Saturday night dinner if you choose. Fee for this event is $385.00. To register go to clubregistration.net; the event number 7486. You can contact Diane Baus at [email protected] for more information. After a day of driving or watching, sit back and enjoy some dinner with your car enthusiasts. All attendees are invited to dinner starting around 5-5:30pm at the event center in the Pitt Race International Complex. The dinner is provided by Porsche Beachwood. There is a no charge for all paid participants and a $5.00 fee for guests. All attendees must RSVP by July 16th to Diane Baus at [email protected] or Brad Kennett at [email protected]. All paid tickets will be available for pickup at NORPCA driver’s registration after 3pm on Saturday. | 15 | NORPCA DRIVING TOUR EXTRAVAGANZA Saturday, August 20, 2016 We have a fun day planned for you! Overall, things went well. The Farmtek timing equipment which was upgraded during the off season to include wireless operation ran pretty much flawlessly. There were one or two exceptions when over-polished painted surfaces caused the STOP sensor not to trip. At least that is the excuse we are using for the reruns. The parking lot areas we are using for course set-up are at least as large, maybe larger, as the ones we used at Lakeland College and are in better condition. We have used two different lots; west of the building at the April school session and the east side in May. The only drawback is the hike to the restrooms. Since retail mall activity is closed, comfort facilities are limited. I walked the first time and drove thereafter. That’s OK because autocrossing in pain makes you faster; you want to get it over with ASAP, and then make the trek. Attendance was good, 40+ drivers, which translates to good revenue for the club, but the disturbing thing was that only 25% of the participants were driving Porsches. Our X Class driver’s money is as green as that of a PCA member, but the efforts made by John Hulick and Doug Bradley and their crew of helpers is meant primarily to make fun for our club members. We will be at ESM monthly through September, so please come out and dodge some pylons. You can now pre-register using the AUTOCROSS tab on the NORPCA website (pre-payment is not required). This will greatly help setting up the timing computer prior to start of first course runs. There is an early deadline to get this issue of Voices into print because I will be at the Vermont Porsche Parade, June 19-28. Because of time constraints I am flying to Burlington, then Hertzing overland to the Jay Peak convention center. I have signed up for a driving tour to Ben & Jerry’s ice cream factory and hope to catch a Porsche ride as navigator for a solo driver. Baring that happening, I have volunteered to be a chase car in the rental. As usual, I will work a shift on the autocross protest committee while rooting for Faye and Doug Bradley to bring trophies home. And for the 49th time I will be trying to win that Factory trip to Germany. Good luck with that!! | 32 | Voices from the Trunk c/o Pat Ellert 7559 Brecksville Rd.
