Happy
Mother’s Day
From Ryan
Spring winds have been abundant this year. Calm
days have been few and far between. I know your
golf and tennis matches have been challenged by both
your opponent and these winds. As the summer
approaches, we look forward to these winds fading
away and your matches heating up.
May begins with a special celebration for all the
Mothers. Sunday, May 10th we will feature a day of
no cooking or cleaning for these special ladies. Plan
to bring your Mother to the Club for our exceptional
brunch and show her your appreciation. Reservations
are a must. The month ends with our Memorial Day
celebration on Monday the 25th. Activities begin at
3:00 PM. See the details on page 15.
Last month at our annual stockholders meeting
Tim Peden, Scott Thane, and Paul Wagner were
elected to serve on the Board of Directors. Serving on
the Board takes a lot of time and effort. We look
forward to their guidance and expertise. We also
would like to thank the outgoing board members for
their service. Woody Gregory, Jan Roden, and Don
Wood have served three diligent years and the Club
thanks them for their vision and support.
In closing I would like to welcome Becky Latham
to our team. Becky will be our Membership Service
Director. She will book all the club events and
scheduling your private occasions. Becky brings
knowledge and experience in event planning to the
Club. We are all excited and welcome Becky to our
team.

Around The Club
From the President
As my official last “act” as President of Odessa Country
Club and now Past President of Odessa Country Club, I
want to write a closing article this month.
I would just like to first of all express my sincere
appreciation for all of you that attended the Annual
Stockholder/Member Appreciation evening this year. It
was great to see all of you out and neat to visit with so
many of you.
Also, I would just like to say what a pleasure to work
with great members on the Board of Directors for the past
three years. I would like to especially say thank you to
Terry Warren, Kevin Bartley, Buz Browning, Woody
Gregory, Dan Hollmann, Marshall Morgan, Jan Roden and
Toby Tripp for their dedication this year.
I want to say a special word to Jan and Woody since we
started our term on the Board of Directors together in May
of 2006 and will retire from the Board this year.
Jan Roden, as you know, is the first female to serve on
the Board. She brought a ladies prospective to the Board
that was insightful and helpful. She certainly represented
the ladies well, and was a tremendous resource to the Board.
Woody Gregory has served on the Board four times and
with that experience offered significant insight, wisdom
and leadership for me personally since he had served as
President for the Board Year 1992/93.
I would like to thank each of these outstanding
individuals for sharing their time and expertise. I thoroughly
enjoyed the last three years, and am deeply honored to have
served as President of Odessa Country Club.

From the Fairway
The golf season is now in full swing here at OCC! The
month of May brings many exciting opportunities and events
for you to enjoy. Our golf courses are healing nicely after the
aerification and we are looking forward to some green grass,
new par 3 tees, and some of the best greens in West Texas!
Mother’s Day is just around the corner. Now is a great
time to start picking out that perfect gift for your mother or
wife. We have some great ladies’ apparel and accessories
stocked in the golf shop for you to choose from, and we are
more than happy to assist you with any questions you may
have.
We also have a couple of golf tournaments we hope to see
you at this month. Our Couples Invitational on May 16-17 has
been a long time favorite of our club. It is a great opportunity
to grab your spouse and compete against other couples in the
area for some fantastic prizes. The Senior Club Championship
is going to be on May 30-31 for all of you gentleman who are 50
years of age and older. This is a great event to test your skills
against your peers and earn a spot on the 2009 Midessa Cup
Team.
I would like to congratulate all of our graduating seniors
of 2009 for all of your hard work and success in your
schoolwork. We have enjoyed seeing you grow in front of our
eyes and we look forward to seeing you succeed in the future as
college students, and on to your career in whichever field you
choose.
We are getting closer to a summer full of golf here at our
club. We will have many events for you to compete in and enjoy
this summer. A great way to get your game in shape and get
ready for them is to attend our complimentary Friday night
clinics during the month of May. Each Friday, we will help you
work on different aspects of the game. May is also PGA Free

free 15 minute lessons. Call the golf shop for your free lesson.
Now is also a good time to think about getting your children

golf ranging from our clinics, to Camp OCC, and many junior
tournaments around the area. Please see one of our
Professional staff members for any assistance you may need.
As always, it is a pleasure for our professional staff to
serve our members at our great facility. If there is anything at

Golf Tip of the Month
I would like to do this month’s tip on something that I
feel is one of the most under appreciated and overlooked
aspects of a golfer’s golf game – grip pressure. Most people
hear the words grip pressure and instantly imagine
themselves clutching the golf club as if it were the winning
lottery ticket.
While I do not want you to lose blood flow to your
fingers, I do want you to hold the club at about a 6 or 7 on
a scale from 1 to 10. I want you to establish control of the
club in your hands. Now comes the overlooked aspect of
grip pressure: I want you to maintain the grip pressure
you start with throughout the entire swing. Sounds
easy enough, but I bet it takes you a decent amount of
concentration to maintain your grip pressure. I will
also bet that once you do maintain a constant grip
pressure throughout your swing, your swing will feel
more simple and fluid.
Controlling your grip pressure is a simple yet
often ignored aspect in controlling the golf club. Try
to sign your name on a piece of paper while letting
your grip pressure on your pen fluctuate. All of a
sudden, your signature becomes a tougher and
more uncoordinated feeling task. But, keep your
pressure constant and you will have more control
over the pen, or your golf club. For more
information on this tip, visit our website
and view the golf tip of the month
video.
If you need some help
with your golf game, one of
our PGA Golf Professionals
would be happy to assist you.
See you on the links,
Clay

Wine Talk
THIS FATHER’S DAY,
This month we will offer a very vibrant and special
Chianti – Santa Christina Chianti
Superiore. The Santa Christina
Chianti Superiore is an intense
ruby red,fruity floral with hints
on the more nose blend well with
the spicy notes from aging in
wood. A harmonious and wellstructured wine with smooth tannins
and persistent fruity hints. Made
from grapes derived from the bestsuited wine growing areas of Chianti,
this wine fully expresses the best
features of the traditional typical
Tuscan Sangiovese grape.
Sangiovise perfectly accompanies red meat, especially
steaks, pork, stewed meat with potatoes. This wine is
from the region of Chianti in the cool climate of Italy.
You may enjoy this by the glass for $9.00 or by the
bottle for $35.00.

Day
You can compare this time of year to a runner at
the starting blocks. We are ready to go but the true
growing season has not hit yet. Every hole has been
poked, all the property has been fertilized, and every
blade of grass has been talked to nicely. A good rain
and as bad as I hate to say it, a little heat is what we
need. We all know the heat is just around the corner
and the rain, well, it gives us something to hope for.
Everything seems to be healing nicely and the
new tees are coming along. As I stated earlier, we are
ready to go. It’s been nice seeing everyone play so
much golf. From where I’m sitting 2009 has the
potential to be a wonderful golfing year, so get your
game in shape now for tomorrow you might be
playing.
