CASE STUDY
Introducing Electronic Prescriptions from
the New York State Dental Association
and Henry Schein
Effective March 27, 2015, practitioners in New York State are required to
electronically prescribe all medication. Beat the rush and sign up today.
New York State law requires all providers to use electronic means to transmit
prescriptions beginning March 27, 2015. New York State Dental Association
(NYSDA) has partnered with Henry Schein to offer you, as a member of NYSDA,
an electronic prescribing solution at a discounted price to ensure that you can
meet this requirement.
Convenient for Patients, Convenient for You
Electronic prescribing automates the process of writing and transmitting prescriptions
to pharmacies while preventing potentially dangerous drug-to-drug interactions, drug
allergies, dosage errors and other problems that can occur when writing prescriptions on
paper. It is accessible instantly from anywhere and requires no downloads or new hardware.
Electronic prescribing provides a HIPAA-compliant, web-based means for dentists to send
prescriptions electronically to retail and mail order pharmacies. Simply put, you and your
staff can streamline operations to provide better care, and save time doing it.
Electronic Prescription of Controlled Substances
Electronic prescribing gives your office the ability to electronically prescribe controlled
substances (EPCS) including Schedule II hydrocodone prescriptions such as Vicodin® and
Lortab® in accordance with new Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) requirements. With the
reclassification of hydrocodone from Schedule III to Schedule II, using ePrescribe from a
certified vendor means that your practice can continue to prescribe medication common to
dental procedures without completing complex forms.
Advanced Integration for Henry Schein Software Customers
Henry Schein software customers who use Dentrix, Dentrix Enterprise, OMSVision,
PerioVision, EndoVision and DentalVision Enterprise can now send electronic prescriptions
with an integrated solution from inside their software saving time and effort. Patient
information fields are prepopulated to reduce the amount of staff data entry. For Henry Schein
customers using Easy Dental, Viive and Dentrix Ascend, a separate stand-alone solution
is now available. Easy Dental and Viive customers can expect an integrated solution with
ePrescribe by early 2015.
All of the Henry Schein ePrescribe solutions are powered by Allscripts, the leading global
provider of electronic prescription technology with the largest network of pharmacies.
Stand-Alone Solution for Non-Henry Schein Customers
As mentioned above, we are also offering a stand-alone ePrescribe solution for dentists currently
not using a practice management software system, are currently using Easy Dental, Dentrix
Ascend or Viive or have a non-Henry Schein system. This solution allows you to upload
your patient data to simplify patient identification and download of all prescriptions written
into an Excel spreadsheet for office recordkeeping. In addition, NYSDA has negotiated a
discounted pricing for dentists who are looking for a new software solution and are considering
a Henry Schein product.
DEA-EPCS Certification
All of the electronic prescribing solutions offered through our partnership with Henry Schein,
through its relationship with Allscripts, meet the DEA-EPCS Certification requirements
and may be used for creating and electronically transmitting Schedule II, III, IV and V
controlled substance prescriptions.
