NEW BOARD MEMBERS
This has been a truly exciting year for the Arts Council

experienced trauma, loss serious illness or disability. The
healing power of the arts is demonstrated on a daily basis
at Creative Heartwork whose arts therapists provide multiple workshops to benefit children in need. Bringing her

the Board, Belgium-born France Delle Donne has served
as an active volunteer in the Morris area since 1991,
developing a thorough knowledge of our community and
its environs. She currently works as Director of

The Arts Council’s MURAL ARTS
PROJECT installed and dedicated
On December 5th, 2008, from 5-7pm, nearly 150 people assembled
at Morristown Neighborhood House to celebrate the completion and
dedication of the newly installed Mural Arts Project. Attendees met
the artist and his family, honored those whose support and funding
made the mural a reality, mingled with the many who participated
in painting the mural and saw the stunning finished mural on the
building wall. Among others, Morristown Mayor Cresitello and
Councilwoman Smith-Reid spoke of the value of Neighborhood
House and especially of power of the arts to unite the community.
The wonderful buffet, provided by The Hyatt Morristown, was an
added treat.

During the two month residency, over 500 people from Scout troops, school
groups, participants in Adult Day Care, child day care, residents of Morris View
Healthcare Center, members of the Arts Council Staff and Board of Trustees
and the community at large participated in the painting efforts. When all 49
mural panels were completed, the artist installed them on the side of the
Neighborhood House building at 12 Flagler Street. The Arts Council hopes that
both the process of creating the mural, as well as the mural itself, will inspire
and energize the community and underscore the value of the arts in our lives.
The Arts Council gratefully acknowledges that funding for the Morristown
Neighborhood House Mural Arts Project was provided by: Artists &
Communities, a program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation made possible by
major funding from Johnson & Johnson, the New Jersey State Council on the
Arts, The Heinz Endowments, the William Penn Foundation, the Pennsylvania
Council on the Arts; and the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and the
Community Foundation of New Jersey; with the generous support of Reynolds
Painting Group, LLC, Jay Favia of Elite Corporate Housing, Marty’s Reliable
Cycle and Thomas DeVita of United Rentals, Piscataway, NJ.

Young Talent Shines at Arts Council of the Morris Area’s Mentoring Program
Now in its 7th year, the Student/Artist Mentoring Program continues to flourish at Morristown
High School. Art Department head, Mira Morrison, with other art teachers at the school, identified
several highly talented, dedicated students needing extra support in assembling portfolios of their
artwork, thus enhancing the students’ applications for scholarships, art school admissions and/or
art careers. With the able oversight of Kadie Dempsey, Director of Local Arts for the Arts Council,
two professional artists from the area, Susan Noonan (Morristown) and Rich Bedkowski
(Morristown), worked with the students for 12 weeks, assigning “homework” to build each student’s portfolio and providing additional enrichment in the areas of Art History, Life Drawing, Still
Life Drawing and Computer Arts. Alumni of the Student/Artist Mentoring Program are proof of
its effectiveness. One “graduate” of the program was offered two different scholarships, each
in excess of $45,000! Additionally, many of these students have gone on to professional work
in the visual arts and/or advanced training at well respected art schools.
To Support the Arts Council: HOW TO GET INVOLVED
How can you make a difference in the lives of so many? Here are a few suggestions:
Annual gifts to the Arts Council provide essential support. Every dollar of your gift supports important
programs and services designed for:
• schoolchildren to have creative and meaningful learning experiences.
• vulnerable children, youth and families to have expressive opportunities for healing and connecting.
• artists and arts organizations to be vital contributors to our community’s culture and economy.
• adults to stretch their imagination, experience beauty, be entertained and connect with others.
Volunteer – share your skills or learn new ones. Work at the Arts Council’s office, on special events, or donate
your professional services.
Make a charitable or in-kind contribution – Give a gift of cash, stocks, bonds, or securities. Provide
postage, printing, paper, design, coupons or other in-kind gifts. All are beneficial to the Arts Council and
provide tax benefits to the donor.
Match your gift – Does your company or that of your spouse have a gift-matching program? Gifts or
volunteer time can be doubled through such a program. All contributions are tax-deductible. For more
information call the Arts Council’s Development office at (973) 285-5115, ext. 13.

international talent and unique experiences to Morristown
I brought friends with me to First Night who had never
been before & they were very impressed with the
breadth of the offerings & with how beautiful downtown Morristown looked – kudos to all! – Sue
On December 31st, 2008, thousands of people braved the subzero wind chill to
attend this year’s exciting First Night® Morris County. Since its inception 17 years
ago, the Arts Council of the Morris Area has been the event’s artistic programmer, selecting and
scheduling the rich variety of artistic talent for New Jersey’s biggest alcohol-free New Year’s Eve
celebration. There were over 90 events, featuring approximately 300 artists in 25 venues in and
around Morristown. Attendees came in from Princeton, Montclair, Philadelphia and even Florida to
enjoy the evening’s offerings. Some of this year’s highlights included international music and dance
from Spain, Japan, Haiti, Eastern Europe and Africa as well as a rap/reggae band, poetry readings and
the basketball magic of the Harlem Wizards. Many of the artists have performed at such venues as
The White House, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, or with such top artists as Madonna,
Queen Latifah, Ringo Starr, Les Paul, Wyclef Jean, Peter Yarrow, Bucky Pizzarelli, in Ringling Brothers
Barnum & Bailey Circus as well as on Broadway, national TV/radio, in Hollywood films, top jazz and
folk festivals, famous clubs, and/or have won international recognition for their work. The Arts Council
proudly brought these extraordinary performers to Morristown on New Year’s Eve for the public to
enjoy – and to herald the New Year through a truly life-affirming celebration of the arts. (For videos and
photos from the event, check www.nj.com/morristown/firstnight as well as www.firstnightmorris.com.)

A special highlight this year was the Program’s January 6th field trip to NY’s Museum of Modern Art
(MOMA), the first time some had been to MOMA (and, for some, the first time they had ever been
to a museum). The trip enhanced connections among the students and faculty and deepened
their knowledge of modern art. Then, on January 20, 2009, each student received a Certificate
of Completion, shared the exciting artwork in their newly completed portfolios and enjoyed the
celebration with family, teachers, and members of the Arts Council staff. This year’s
Student/Artist Mentoring Program class included: Cori Connolly, Danny Gallego, Christian
Hernandez, Demetria Jorge, Jose Osorio, Samatha Storch, and Katya Zubovskaya.

The Arts Council selected respected Philadelphia mural artist,
Cesar Viveros-Herrera, to create the permanent 35’ x 35’ outdoor

the Neighborhood House’s mission over more than 100 years to
