The Eerste Openluchtschool (First Open Air School) in Amsterdam
is a model example of Modernist architecture, of the Dutch
'Nieuwe Zakelijkheid' (New Objectivity) to be exact. Johannes
Duiker projected a concrete and glass building that shows proudly
its glass-free corners thanks to the white-painted cantilevered
structure. The school is a pure cubic volume rotated 45º degrees
to the courtyard block where it is located. The only addition to
the cube is the gym area in the ground plan.

Along the busy street Duinstraat in Scheveningen two blocks of
urban villas stand firmly and distinct, surrounded by a diverse
group of buildings of different style and age. In order to maintain
the vista on the adjacent Derde Ambachtsschool of the famous
Dutch architect Duiker, the housing program is divided in two
separate buildings with each eight (20 m. long) apartments. The
minimalist architecture and the use of brick and steel remind of
the nearby harbour. The dark, silver-shine brick blocks form a
colour changing façade through sun and weather conditions and
forms an intermediate between the surrounding brick buildings
and the modernist light silver-grey school of Duiker.

Duiker was one of the leading Dutch modernist architects. This
technical training school is a modification of an unrealized design
in brick of seven years earlier. It is one of those examples of
Prewar Modernism, architecture belonging to the International
Style, or the Modern Movement (1880-1940), or in the Dutch
version: Modernism / Functionalism (ca. 1910 - ca. 1943).
Following his experiences with Zonnestraal in Hilversum and the
Open Air School in Amsterdam, Duiker once again used a concrete
frame taking a standard classroom as basic for his structural unit
(2,7 m * 3 m). All 21 classrooms are off a central corridor, either
lengthwise or at right angles to it. A bicycle shelter, the
cloakroom and the porter's lodge cluster round the entrance. The
horizontally organized, stepped façade is crowned by a structure
resembling a ship's bridge. After the school vacated the building
it was restored and now serves as a office centre for several
creative professions.

houses here to enter and see the interior. Especially the
staircases are beautiful.
How to get there
Tram 1 from Den Haag HS trainstation stops at Duinstraat /
Keizerstraat. Then walk for another 3 minutes. Or take tram 11,
from Den Haag HS to the harbour of Scheveningen, and walk 5
min.
