Lenten lecture series 2014
“Behold Thy Mother”
From the Cross, Our Blessed Lord Himself gave us the gift of His Mother.
Consider this Lent how Our Blessed Lady, just as she loves her own Son, loves each and every one of us
and how continually throughout history she has been sent by her Son
to comfort and strengthen her children in this valley of tears.

TODAY AT SAINT AGNES
CHORALE AND ORCHESTRA NOTES
Please join us today in Schuler Hall for a Pancake Breakfast
sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, benefiting the upcoming Saint Agnes School Vocations Pilgrimage to the Holy
Land. Pancakes will be serviced after the 8:30, 10:00 and Noon
Masses today. Coffee and donuts will be served after the 6:30
and 7:30 Masses. 100% of the proceeds benefit the Vocations
Pilgrimage.
W.A. Mozart, Missa Longa K.262
W. A. Mozart (1756-1791) did not seem to have any special
occasion in mind when he composed this Mass in mid-1775.
Mozart’s Missa Longa (long mass) calls for elaborate instrumental interludes throughout, but does not include solo
arias. So the Mass technically cannot be classified as a missa
solemnis (solemn mass). The elaborate fugues at the end of
the Gloria and Credo are masterful compositions that present special challenges for Chorale members. Mozart continued to compose sacred music, but during this period of
his life he became more involved with secular instrumental
music as well as opera. In the summer of 1777, Mozart
asked to be released from his employment with the PrinceArchbishop of Salzburg, who responded by dismissing
both Mozart and his father.

Catholic Doctrine and Morality Class—February 20
In 1991, one of the major obstacles of the confirmation of
Clarence Thomas to the US Supreme Court was his interest
in and endorsement of the natural law. Why did this draw
such anger from certain Senators? What is it about the natural law that engenders such heated debate and even vitriol? This week’s lecture for the Catholic Doctrine and Morality Class will be by Mr. DeJak addressing the natural law
and the moral life and the Church as the authentic interpreter of the natural law. All parishioners—whether or not
they are formally in the class—are invited to Schuler Hall on
Thursday at 7:30-8:30 p.m. for this or any of the sessions on
the truths of our faith.
Pick-up Basketball Moves to Wednesdays
Monday Men's Basketball moves to Wednesdays beginning
the week of Feb. 24, and runs through April. We play from
7:30-9:00 p.m. Please arrive at Door #1 no later than 7:30 so

Catholic Healthcare Conference—March 28-29
All in health care and the general public are invited to participate in a bioethics conference at St. Catherine University
& the University of St. Thomas on March 28 and 29, 2014
presented by Curatio, an Apostolate of Catholic Health Care
Professionals. Conference participants will learn how to
joyfully bear witness to the surpassing dignity of the human
person in the midst of escalating challenges and threats to
human life in health care, especially to those who are suffering and most vulnerable. The keynote speaker, Father Nicanor Pier Giorgio Austriaco, is the Associate Professor of
Molecular Biology and Genetics at Providence College in
Rhode Island. Continuing education credits are available.

Homeschool Family 4th Friday Event - February 28
Church tours with Parish Historian John Ernster! All
homeschooling families are invited to attend our second
Homeschool Family 4th Friday event scheduled for February 28. We will start in the chapel at 3:00 p.m. with Divine
Mercy devotions, followed by Church tours with parish
historian, John Ernster. There will be a brief slide presentation for everyone, then John will lead a short tour for the
little ones and then a longer, more detailed tour for the
older kids. We will then attend Benediction and 5:15 p.m.
Mass, followed by a pizza dinner ($10 per family, please
bring a side dish to share) and social time. If you have any
