HTI programs focus on basic and advanced level learning on a wide range of refuse collection
vehicle models to provide the insight, practical hands-on experience, and procedures

Garbage Truck 101
Audience: This class provides an introduction to the world of garbage trucks and their inner workings. No prior
experience is necessary.
Description: From the collection to the processing and the final destination of waste, this course is intended to
provide an introduction to the refuse collection industry.
Schedule:
Day 1: Introduction to Garbage—The course provides an overall view of what is involved in the refuse
industry, the terms used, and the different types of collection vehicles and applications within the
industry.
Basic Hydraulics—Hydraulic systems are introduced to provide a basic understanding of their
use on refuse collection vehicles.
Basic Electronics—Electronic systems are presented to provide a basic understanding of their
use on refuse collection vehicles.
Day 2: Rear Loaders—Basics of the rear loader family of products will be introduced to begin the
second day of classes. The course breaks down the types of rear loaders manufactured by Heil
and their different applications. The operational aspects are also presented and demonstrated on a
rear loader.
Front Loaders—The operation and functionality of the front loader is introduced in the final
portion of the second day. Residential and commercial applications for the front loader are
detailed within this portion of the course. The day ends with each student operating a Heil front
loader on a test track.
Day 3: Side Loaders—The final day of classes will focus on Heil’s products and innovations in the
automated and semi-automated side loader line of products. This day will conclude with students
driving a refuse collection vehicle through a simulated collection route on a closed test track.
Materials:
Students can expect to leave this course with an understanding of the different ways Heil vehicles
work, basic industry terms, and an understanding of waste collection vehicle types.

Half/Pack® Front Loader—Basic Training
Audience: This class is suitable for those who have a basic understanding of, and experience with, refuse
collection vehicles.
Description: A leader in the refuse collection industry, the Heil Half/Pack front loader is renowned for its
durability and dependability. The Half/Pack front loader class is designed to help you maintain the
front loader to ensure its long-term performance. The principles of hydraulics and electronics are
presented to enable attendees to understand the entire operation of the equipment, from the
hydraulics necessary for using the arms and forks to lift a container, to the electronics involved in
making sure the packing mechanism works as intended.

Day 1: Basic Hydraulics—Learning to read hydraulic schematics is just one part of this curriculum
which uses National Fluid Power Association (NFPA) licensed interactive software, as well
as hands-on applications, to better understand basic hydraulic systems.
Day2:
Basic Electronics—Students will learn how to read electronics schematic charts, study Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming and troubleshooting, and participate in hands
on application labs.
Day 3:
Half/Pack Specific Training—The final day of the course includes but is not limited to reviewing
the following items:
• Front loader nomenclature including clamp-on arms, fork assembly, top sliding door, cab
protector, and packing mechanism
• Front loader lubrication chart and intervals including the arm and fork assemblies
• Clamp-on arm procedures for adjustments
• Understanding and troubleshooting the Single Vane Dennsion pump and pump block
• Front loader electrical and hydraulic schematic with pressure setting procedures
• PLC program number 109-0214 for commercial front loaders and program
109-0216 for residential front loaders
• Arm and fork control functionality for both residential and commercial units, including the autolift
feature on the residential units

gauge kit, and a proximity switch / proximity switch harness tester.

DuraPack® Python®—Basic Training
Audience: This class is suitable for those who have a basic understanding of, and experience with, refuse
collection vehicles.
Description: Outside the box thinking led to the innovation that is the Heil Python. It also takes that same type of
innovative thinking to maintain and repair these types of units. This course is designed to present
the Python in a way that makes this complex vehicle easy to understand. From easy topics on how often to lubricate, to more daunting tasks such as troubleshooting a PLC, this course offers it all for those interested in taking the next step in understanding the present and future of refuse collection vehicles.

Day 1: Day 2: Day 3: Basic Hydraulics—Learning to read hydraulic schematics is just one part of this curriculum that
uses National Fluid Power Association (NFPA) licensed interactive software, as well as hands-on
applications, to better understand basic hydraulic systems.
Basic Electronics—Students will learn how to read electronics schematic charts, study Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming and troubleshooting, and participate in hands-
on application labs.
DP Python Specific Training—The final day of the course includes but is not limited to reviewing
the following items:
• Python nomenclature including the Python arm, controls, and packing mechanism
• Python lubrication chart including the proper lubrication of the Python arm
• PLC program 109-0246
• Understanding and troubleshooting the Tandem Dennison Vane pump and pump block
• Python hydraulic and electrical schematics including the autolift and select-o-pack features
• Python controls functionality including the autolift and manual operation of the arm

Students will receive a basic hydraulic, electronic, and DP Python manual, an extensive hydraulic
gauge kit, and a proximity switch / proximity switch harness tester.

CP Python®—Basic Training
Audience: This class is suitable for those who have a basic understanding of, and experience with, refuse
collection vehicles.
Description: The Heil CP Python is the unique combination of two very proven technologies. The unit consists of
the innovative Python arm with the Rapid Rail body platform and packing mechanism. This
combination delivers unique performance, but also provides challenges for maintenance and
troubleshooting. This course will divide the unit into components that can be diagnosed and
understood. The participant, after completing the course, should be confident in working on and
maintaining the CP Python, not just the Python arm or the continuous pack mechanism, and be able
to quickly diagnose any challenge the unit presents.

Day 1: Basic Hydraulics—Learning to read hydraulic schematics is just one part of this curriculum that
uses National Fluid Power Association (NFPA) licensed interactive software, as well as hands-on
applications, to better understand basic hydraulic systems.
Day 2: Basic Electronics—Students will learn how to read electronics schematic charts, study Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming and troubleshooting, and participate in hands-
on application labs.
Day 3: CP Python Specific Training—The final day of the course includes but is not limited to reviewing
the following items:
•CP Python nomenclature, including the Python arm and Rapid Rail body components
•Lubrication for both the Python arm and Rapid Rail body components, including the continuous
pack mechanism
•Hydraulic schematics for the unit, particularly how the unit is configured with the Python arm
and Rapid Rail body
•Electrical schematics, including a review of the mini-PLC
•Control functionality, including the arm and continuous packing mechanism

MultiTask SL™—Basic Training

This class is suitable for those who have a basic understanding of, and experience with, refuse
collection vehicles.
Description: While the MultiTask SL boasts the same Heil quality as all other Heil products, it features a side
loader arm and a packing mechanism that may be unfamiliar to some Heil users. This course
develops the overall knowledge base for this product line and provides information about how to
properly maintain the vehicle. The course breaks the hydraulic, electrical, and structural systems
components into terms that are easy to understand, better equipping the attendee to perform
preventative maintenance and repairs.
Schedule:
Day 1: Basic Hydraulics—Learning to read hydraulic schematics is just one part of this curriculum that
uses National Fluid Power Association (NFPA) licensed interactive software, as well as hands-on
applications, to better understand basic hydraulic systems.
Day 2: Basic Electronics—Students will learn how to read electronics schematic charts, study Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming and troubleshooting, and participate in hands-
on application labs.
Day 3: MultiTask SL Specific Training—The final day of the course includes but is not limited to
reviewing the following items:
• MutliTask SL nomenclature, including telegrip arm, packer mechanism, and hopper
•Proper lubrication and maintenance of the telegrip arm including wear pads
•Mini-PLC Program 109-0202
•Workings of the packing mechanisms
•Outside controls operations
•Cart tipper locations and controls
•Functionality of the controls for the MultiTask SL

gauge kit, and a proximity switch / proximity switch harness tester.

Rapid Rail® & STARR™ System—Basic Training
Audience: This class is suitable for those who have a basic understanding of, and experience with, refuse
collection vehicles.
Description: The Rapid Rail arm, which is used on both the Heil Rapid Rail and Heil STARR System product lines, has long been a favorite of automated side loader users. The performance of these arms is
among the industry leaders, and this course is designed to build an understanding of the arm
functionality along with the packing mechanism and all other functions of the unit. Heil has made
design enhancements in recent years and this course will address those changes in detail. From
covering the re-design of the structural components of the arm, to the updated hydraulic and
electrical circuits and the long proven packing mechanism, this course will bring the level of
understanding of this refuse collection vehicle up to the necessary levels for all participants.

uses National Fluid Power Association (NFPA) licensed interactive software, as well as hands-on
applications, to better understand basic hydraulic systems.

•Rapid Rail/STARR control functionality, including the arm operation in both coordinated and non-coordinated modes, and the packing mechanism

Rear Loader—Basic Training
Audience: This class is suitable for those who have a basic understanding of, and experience with, refuse
collection vehicles.
Description: Rear loaders are the mainstay of the refuse collection industry. While the roots for these products
run deep within the industry, changes in technology have led to many enhancements in the
workings of these products. Heil has a wide range of rear loader products available, and this
course is intended to take the participant beyond just engaging a control handle. Instead it is
designed to cover the inner-workings of the units to develop a complete understanding of the
technology that makes up a modern rear loader. The level understanding provided by this course
will lead attendees in ensuring the dependability of a fleet and reducing the downtime necessary to
troubleshoot and repair units.
Schedule:
Day 1: Basic Hydraulics—Learning to read hydraulic schematics is just one part of this curriculum that
uses National Fluid Power Association (NFPA) licensed interactive software, as well as hands-on
applications, to better understand basic hydraulics systems.
Day 2: Basic Electronics—Students will learn how to read electronics schematic charts, use a multi
meter, and participate in hands-on application labs.
Formula® 4000 and PT 1000® Low- to Mid-range Compaction Rear Loaders—This portion of the
course includes, but is not limited to, a review of the following:
•Nomenclature of the Formula 4000 and PT 1000 including packing mechanism, sweep (lower
panel), and slide (upper panel)
•Lubrication requirements for both units
•Tailgate and body controls for the both units
•Applications for both rear loader styles and the different options available
Day 3: DuraPack® 5000 and PowerTrak™ Commercial High-Compaction Real Loaders—The final day of the course includes, but is not limited to, reviewing the following items:
• Nomenclature of the DP 5000 and PT Commercial including packing mechanism, sweep (lower panel), and slide (upper panel)
• Lubrication requirements for both units
• Tailgate and body controls for the both units
• Applications for both rear loader styles and the different options
Materials:
Students will receive a basic hydraulic, electronic, and F4000, PT1000, DP5000, and PT
Commercial manual, an extensive hydraulic gauge kit, and a proximity switch / proximity switch
harness tester.
