The Lord Showed Him A Tree
part v
By Jimmy Swaggart
Exodus 15:25 — “And he cried unto the Lord; and the Lord shewed him a tree, which when he had
cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and
there He proved them.”
The Scripture says, “The waters were made sweet.”
This means that the Lord can turn the bitterness
in your heart and life into that which is sweet. In
fact, He alone can do this.
As you read these words, you may think that such
is beyond reach. Well, it is beyond our reach as
it regards our own personal strength; however, it’s
definitely not beyond the reach of our Lord. In
fact, this is not something that He has to do in the
future. He has already healed the bitterness in
your heart, and all you have to do is simply appropriate it by faith in the manner in which we have
described to you.
Some may ask the question, “Will everything
change immediately?”
at the Cross, ever making that the object of your
faith, you are guaranteed victory (Rom. 8:1-2, 11).
THE STATUTE AND THE ORDINANCE
The phrase, “There He made for them a statute and
an ordinance, and there He proved them,” refers to the
promise of the next verse.
The words “proved them” refers to the testing of
their faith. Regrettably, they didn’t come out
too well, but rather murmured and complained
against Moses. However, God is merciful and gracious and didn’t overthrow them, just as He is merciful and gracious to us. Thank God He is, or we
wouldn’t be here.
There will definitely be a change immediately in
your heart and life as you begin to realize, as the
Spirit bears witness with your spirit, that you are
now on the right track; however, it may take some
time for the healing to be complete. Actually, the
very word healing refers to a process.
However, the truth is, you are now on the right
road, and while everything may not change immediately as it regards the situation, whatever it is,
it will definitely ultimately change, even though it
may do so little by little. Then again, regarding
bitterness, the change may happen immediately
with some. It has with untold thousands, and it
may very well happen with you.
But that’s not the point. The point is, Jesus has
already healed these bitter waters, and once your
faith is anchored firmly in Him and what He did

HEALING
“And said, If you will diligently hearken to the voice of
the Lord your God, and will do that which is right in
THE
JIMMY SWAGGART
His sight, and will give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put
none of these diseases upon you, which I
have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am
the Lord who heals you” (Ex. 15:26).
We learn several things from this verse
of Scripture.
Therefore, I can stand before the Lord
and honestly say that through Christ
and in Christ, I have kept every single
commandment and statute. I sense
greatly the presence of the Lord, even as
I dictate these words.
SECOND: MAN IS A SINNER, AND SIN
HAS SEPARATED HIM FROM GOD
“For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for
the unjust, that He might bring us to God ...” (I Pet. 3:18).
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none
other name under Heaven given among men, whereby we
must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
FOURTH: YOU MUST RECEIVE JESUS CHRIST
AS YOUR PERSONAL LORD AND SAVIOUR
Jesus calls this experience the new birth. He told
Nicodemus: “... Except a man be born again, he cannot
see the Kingdom of God” (Jn. 3:3).
We invite you now to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as
your personal Saviour. “But as many as received Him,
to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to
them that believe on His Name” (Jn. 1:12).
Listen again to Paul: “And you are complete in Him, which is the Head of all principality and power” (Col. 2:10).
I am to understand that my salvation
and my victory don’t lie within my own
perfection or the lack thereof. So, if all
of this is not in me, where is it?
And then again: “That you may stand
perfect and complete in all the will of God”
(Col. 4:12).
All that I need is in Christ. Our Lord
has kept every single commandment
and statute. He has done so impeccably
and has done so all of the time, and He
did it all for us. He is my substitute and
my representative man (I Cor. 15:45-50).
My trust and faith in Him grants to me
all of His victory, and does so automatically and immediately.
DISEASES
This is where we make our mistake. We
think, in essence, that He is giving victory to us. While we certainly are recipients of victory, or whatever, it is not
actually to us that all of this is given.
It is to Christ. God blesses Christ, and
our faith in Him grants us all the blessings that He has been given. All the victory is in Christ, and my faith in Him,
and my faith in Him alone, grants me
His victory. In fact, this is the idea of
the entire salvation process. It is all in
Christ, or it is nothing at all!
FIRST: GOD LOVES YOU!
“For God so loved the world that he gave His only Begotten
Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but
have Everlasting Life” (Jn. 3:16).
THIRD: JESUS CHRIST IS THE ONLY REMEDY FOR SIN
Now, the truth is, no human being has
ever done this, other than Christ. So,
this means that in the sight of God, we
are shot down, so to speak, before we
even begin.
GOD DOESN’T GIVE VICTORY
TO MEN, ONLY TO CHRIST
We have set aside this corner of The Evangelist to show God’s
Plan of Salvation. If you are unsure where you will go when
you die, please listen to what God has said in His Word:
“For there is not a just man upon Earth, that doeth good
and sinneth not” (Eccl. 7:20).
“For all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God”
(Rom. 3:23).
The Lord told Israel, and all of us, as
well, that we must keep “all His commandments and statutes.” He didn’t say
“some,” but rather “all.”
To receive the benefits of the Cross, I
am obligated to do this which He commands. These are the conditions, and
they will not be altered. So, what am
I to do?
PRICELESS CORNER
The phrase, “I will put none of these diseases upon you, which I have brought upon
the Egyptians,” proclaims the fact that
the Lord is in charge of all things.
While sickness and disease originated
with the fall in the garden of Eden and
has come upon the human race because
of sin, this is all because of a decree
from the Lord.
Some Christians act as though the Lord
answers to the Devil. It’s the other way
around. Satan answers to God! In other
words, whatever it is that Satan wants to
do, he can do only as the Lord gives him
permission to do so. To be sure, he is
not running loose, but is rather subject
to the Lord at all times (Job, Chpts. 1-2).
Because of the idol worship of the Egyptians, the Lord caused certain diseases
to come upon them. It is no different
presently!
When men ignore God, they reap the
results of their actions. While the Lord

“Dear
“
Lord Jesus, I now realize that I am a sinner. I accept the
fact that You died for me on the rugged Cross of Calvary. I now
open my heart’s door and receive You as Saviour and Lord of
my life. Please take full control of me and help me to be the
kind of Christian You want me to be. Amen.”

may use Satan as an instrument, which He often does, still,
it is the Lord who does the directing in all things.
The Lord can withhold blessings, and He can bestow blessings. It is all predicated upon the individual and whether
our faith is properly in Christ and the Cross or otherwise!
Even then, our faith must be tested, and great faith must be
tested greatly.
THE HEALING POWER OF GOD
The phrase, “For I am the Lord who heals you,” proclaims the
fact that He is the healer, and He alone is the healer. The
name Lord in the Hebrew, as used here, is actually Jehovah-Ropheka, which means “Jehovah, the healer.” So, the
Lord revealed Himself here to Moses and to the children of
Israel in a more graphic way. He was telling them that He
was now their healer. What a comfort that must have been!
Let the reader understand that while, in fact, they were in
a wilderness, and it was unpleasant to say the least, this
is where God would reveal Himself to His people even in a
more advanced way. They had known Him as the deliverer;
now they knew Him as the healer as well!
Let the reader also understand that as this promise was
given to Moses and the children of Israel some 3,600 years
ago, it is still just as appropriate now as it was then. God
does not change simply because He cannot change, and we
refer to His attributes. Whatever blessing He promised then,
He promises now and, in fact, will ever do so.
A PERSONAL HEALING
The promise of healing is very real to me on a personal basis.
If I remember correctly, the year was 1945, which means that
I was 10 years old.
I had some type of physical problem, which the doctors did
not seem to be able to find. My parents, in fact, took me to
several doctors, but all to no avail. They ruled out malaria,
plus other things, and seemed not to be able to come to a
satisfactory diagnosis.
I stayed nauseated constantly and would at times go unconscious. Actually, I passed out several times at school. The
last time it happened, the principal told my parents when
they were called to come and get me, “Something is going
to have to be done for Jimmy. And if something is not done,
you’re going to have to take him out of school.” The principal then said, “We don’t want him dying on our hands.”
That’s how critical that it was, and regrettably, the doctors,
as stated, did not seem to be able to help.
PRAYER
I had been anointed with oil and prayed for any number of
times by our pastor and others in our church but, seemingly,
to no avail. However, of the following, I am very thankful.
I’m so glad that we attended a church where the pastor
believed that Jesus Christ still healed the sick. Had I not
been a part of such a church, I probably would not be alive
today, for I believe that Satan was trying to kill me.
On the particular day in question, the day of my healing, it
was a Sunday, and service had just ended. My parents were
taking the pastor and his wife out to lunch. Of course, my
baby sister and I were among the group.
Before going to lunch, they were to go by the home of one of
the members of the church, who had been ill and had not
been able to be in service that morning. They lived in a very
humble dwelling, and I remember us going to the bedroom,
which was at the back, and the pastor laying hands on the
dear brother and praying for him.
As everyone walked back toward the front of the house, all
of us stopped in the front room, in fact, bidding the lady
of the house goodbye and saying something encouraging to
her about her husband who was ill.
I was standing near the door, with the pastor standing
behind me and my dad to his left. This scene is forever
freeze-framed in my mind.
THE ANOINTING OIL
Dad said to the pastor, “Brother Culbreth, anoint Jimmy
with oil and pray for him.” He further added, “If the Lord
doesn’t do something for him, we’re going to have to take
him out of school.”
Brother Culbreth was standing there with a little bottle of oil
in his hand, with which he had just anointed the brother for
whom he had come to pray. He smiled and walked toward

8 MAY 2016 THE EVANGELIST
I think there are many questions that we have as it regards
the Lord and the how of His doing of things. The Lord’s ways
are not our ways, but this I do know, which the Bible teaches:
It teaches that Jesus Christ is still the healer (I Pet. 2:24). As
well, the Lord taught us that if we don’t get the answer at
first, we are to keep knocking (Lk. 11:5-13).
Frances & Friends with Frances Swaggart

Now, as stated, he had done this any number of times in the
past few months. So, the question could be asked, “Why
didn’t the Lord heal me the other times?” I really don’t
have the answer to that, and I don’t think anyone else does.
We could probably say that He was testing our faith, and
possibly that is so, but as a 10-year-old child, I didn’t know
that much about faith, but I did know that the Lord was
the healer.

A BALL OF FIRE
The moment the pastor anointed me with oil, he at the same
time began to pray, along with all others in the room. And
then it happened!
I felt something like a hot ball of fire start at the top of my
head and then slowly go down through the entirety of my
body, even down to my feet. I knew beyond the shadow of
a doubt that I was healed. I knew that I would never have
that sickness again, and that’s exactly what happened. I’ve
never had that problem again, not in any capacity.
Does this mean that everyone who truly receives healing
from the Lord will experience a heat-like feeling go through
their physical body? No, it doesn’t, but some few do! We
could ask the question, “Does God always heal according to
our faith?” In other words, is the amount of faith we have
always the barometer?
JIMMY SWAGGART
No, it isn’t! While faith is certainly
required, to be sure, the Lord is not
sitting up in Heaven, refusing to heal
us because we need five percent more
faith. Such thinking is silly, but unfortunately, many preachers teach such
error.
I cannot honestly answer why the
Lord sometimes heals and sometimes
doesn’t. I cannot answer why we are
prayed for several times for the same
problem and receive no healing, and
then seemingly out of the blue, just
as the Lord did with me, prayer is
answered, and we are healed.
THE LORD IS A MIRACLE
WORKER
All I know is this: the Lord is still in the
healing business. In fact, He is still in
the miracle-working business as well!
While He doesn’t always heal, I thank
God for the times He does heal.
While I’m on the subject, I think it
might be proper to make a few statements regarding some of the modern
claims that are made as it respects
healing and miracles.
As should be obvious, the Lord receives
no glory out of false claims. As well,
the preacher pronouncing people as
healed when there is no physical evidence that such has occurred, once
again, doesn’t bring glory to God. The
problem is, almost all of these people
treated thusly are, in fact, not healed.
It hurts the cause of Christ for a
preacher before thousands of people to
announce to that congregation that the
dear soul standing before him, who,
incidentally, is dying with cancer, is
healed when there is, in fact, no physical proof. Almost every time, those
people, at least those of my acquaintance, have died. And yet, it seems that
the church asks few questions because
they have been taught that to question
such a preacher about such practices
constitutes rebellion. In fact, it is actually taught that such individuals are
above question.
NO PERSON IS ABOVE
QUESTION
When preachers put themselves in
such a position — and it is for certain
that they have put themselves there
because the Lord surely hasn’t — such
is a sure sign that what they are doing
is not of God. Any and every believer,
providing they are in a right spirit, has
the scriptural right to question what
is done, that is, if it doesn’t seem to be
proper. Any true preacher of the gospel
will welcome such scrutiny.
In fact, it is my belief that being prayed
for by such preachers, whomever they
might be, not only doesn’t help the
individual in question but, in fact, can
cause greater sickness.
Listen to what Paul said: “Wherefore
whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink
this cup of the Lord (the Lord’s Supper),
unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and
blood of the Lord. But let a man examine
himself, and so let him eat of that bread,
and drink of that cup. For he who eats
and drinks unworthily, eats and drinks
damnation to himself, not discerning the
Lord’s body. For this cause many are weak
and sickly among you, and many sleep”
(I Cor. 11:27-30).
NOT PROPERLY DISCERNING
THE LORD’S BODY
Paul has made some serious charges
here. He has said that if we do not
properly discern the Lord’s body, sickness can be the result, and even premature death. Even though such a person
will not lose his soul, he will definitely
have his life shortened. In fact, he used
the term many sleep, which should give
us pause for thought.
When he spoke of believers being “guilty
of the body and blood of the Lord,” he was
meaning that such a believer was not
properly “discerning the Lord’s body.”
For the believer to properly discern the
Lord’s body is to understand that everything he has from the Lord has come to
him solely and completely through the
Cross of Christ on which Jesus died.
All of this means that our faith must be
exclusively in Christ and what Christ
has done for us at the Cross.
HOW DOES ALL THIS
TRANSLATE?
It means that if the preacher who prays
for you isn’t basing all that he does on
the sacrifice of Christ, in other words,
the Cross, he very well could be functioning with “another spirit,” and, in
fact, it is just about guaranteed that
he is functioning accordingly (II Cor.
11:4). While thousands in the church
are clamoring for some particular
preacher to lay hands on them, the
truth is, oftentimes, instead of bringing
healing, it brings the very opposite.
Despite all of this, and we speak of
the false claims, etc., the Lord is still
the healer. The believer is encouraged
by the Word of God to ardently seek
the Lord as it regards our needs, irrespective as to what they might be, and
He has promised, in His own way, to
answer (Lk. 11:5-13).

TWELVE WELLS OF WATER AND SEVENTY
PALM TREES
The 70 palm trees are symbolic of ministry, which must be
built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus
Christ Himself being the chief corner stone.
“And they came to Elim, where were twelve wells of water, and
threescore and ten palm trees: and they encamped there by the
waters” (Ex.15:27).
The Scripture tells us that Jesus “appointed other seventy also,
and sent them two and two before His face into every city and
place, whither He Himself would come” (Lk. 10:1).
This passage carries a spiritual significance of what was to
come in the future. Even though Israel would not have seen
it then, looking back, we can see it now.
Luke added to that by saying, “And the seventy returned again
with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils (demons) are subject unto us
through Your name” (Lk. 10:17).
First of all, the “twelve wells of water” spoke of the twelve
apostles who would be chosen by Christ, and on which, in a
sense, the new covenant would be built.
The Scripture says: “Now therefore you are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of
the household of God; and are built upon the foundation of the
apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner
stone; in whom all the building fitly framed together grows unto a
holy temple in the Lord: In whom you also are built together for a
habitation of God through the Spirit” (Eph. 2:19-22).
TWELVE AND SEVENTY
The “twelve wells of water,” symbolizing the “twelve apostles,”
also symbolize the government of God, for the number of
government is 12. There were 12 tribes of Israel, 12 apostles,
and the city, New Jerusalem, is 12,000 furlongs square. As
well, it has a wall with 12 foundations, on which are written the names of the 12 apostles of the Lamb. The wall is
pierced by 12 gates, with 12 angels standing at the 12 gates.
As stated, 12 portrays the government of God. That government is based on apostles and prophets, whose callings
continue unto this hour.
THE ENCAMPMENT
The phrase, “And they encamped there by the waters,” signals
the place in which the believer is to rest. If we pitch our
tent “there,” so to speak, this will be according to the Word
of God, and in the midst of this weary world, we will find
relaxation, joy, peace, and serenity. This is that of which
Jesus was speaking when He said, “Come unto Me, all you who
labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Mat. 11:28).
As long as the doctrine is Jesus Christ and Him crucified,
which speaks of the foundation — typed by the “twelve wells
of water” — and the ministry — typed by the “threescore and
ten palm trees”—Christ will be found in all His glory and will
be to the believer what He desires to be.

BE ANGRY AND SIN NOT
by frances swaggart
Colossians 3:8 — “But now you also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy
communication out of your mouth.”
It’s a story that we’ve heard all too often about the
young husband and his explosive temper. Without
warning he erupts, firing verbal insults into the ears
of his wife and children, destroying their feelings of
security and self-worth. Excuses are made to hide the
family’s shame and embarrassment: That’s just how he
is; he doesn’t mean to do it; afterward he is so sorry.
But sometimes the outbursts escalate into rage and
he physically hurts his wife or his children. Immediately
after the tantrum, he’s fine, but those who received
the brunt of his anger are not.
Clearly it’s not just men who wrestle with this issue;
women and an increasing number of children also
overdose on this fiery emotion we call anger.
SINFUL ANGER
Studies show that one out of every 10 Americans is
angry, and Christians are no exception. Born-again,
Spirit-filled Christians get angry, and when anger is
expressed for the wrong reason, it is sin.
12 MAY 2016 THE EVANGELIST
In the marriage and family course that our associate
pastor Dave Smith teaches at our Bible college, he
stresses the importance of knowing how a potential
spouse expresses anger. It’s important, he says, to
know if the one you intend to marry is in bondage
to anger. Ask, he advises, if that man or woman is
easily provoked, or if his or her anger is uncontrollable
because marriage will not change a person. If a person
is easily angered before the wedding, then he or she
can be angered just as easily after the wedding.
“A lot of people use anger to try to control other
people,” Smith said. “Think of a child throwing a
temper tantrum in the grocery store because she wants
a piece of candy. What’s that child trying to do? Kids
are smart and they know how and when to throw a
temper tantrum to get their own way, and that’s the
motive behind it. That child has learned that rather
than dealing with her rebellion, Mom will give in and
buy her the candy. Adults do the same thing. Adults
use anger to intimidate, dominate, and manipulate
so that they can do what? Exactly the same thing: get
their own way.”
We get letters all the time, especially from women,
explaining how their families are being torn apart by
the sin of anger. When a member of the family gives
into anger or flies into a rage, that person is out of
control and can do anything. And it doesn’t matter
if he regrets it afterward because the damage to the
family is already done. That’s why this ministry cannot
tell a woman to stay with her husband when he gets
angry and hits her or starts mistreating the children
because that can be dangerous.

FRANCES SWAGGART
There is a story that a lady once told the
great evangelist Billy Sunday: “I’ll admit
I have a temper, but it’s over in just a
minute.” Sunday replied, “Yes, ma’am, and
so is the blast of a shotgun, but it destroys
everything it hits.”
IS ANGER A HEAD PROBLEM OR A
HEART PROBLEM?
Psychology identifies anger as a head
problem—a strong feeling, a thought, a
behavior. But the Word of God illuminates
anger in the heart, where it begins:
“But those things which proceed out of
the mouth come forth from the heart; and
they defile the man. For out of the heart
proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness,
blasphemies: These are the things which
defile a man….” (Matt. 15:18-20).
For Christians, the solution to anger
cannot be a blend of psychology and
the Bible; their only answer should be
the Word of God. Unfortunately, many
Christians turn to counselors to help them
control their tempers—often at the suggestion of a pastor.
Over the years, my husband has written
quite a bit on this topic, explaining how
the modern church has opted to trust in
clinical psychology.
“The psychological way and the way of the
Cross are diametrically opposed to each
other,” he said. “They are so diametrically
different and originate from such totally
different sources that there is no way the
two can be wed. As for preachers who
claim that the two can be melded, it shows
either a terrible ignorance of the Cross of
Christ, or else, gross unbelief.”
Martin and Deidre Bobgan agree. This
couple has six university degrees between
them; Martin’s doctorate is in educational
psychology. However, after becoming a
Christian, Martin discovered that psychology and the Bible don’t mix. So, for the
past 40 years, this precious couple has
helped others understand that the Bible
is sufficient for the issues of life.
In their book, PsychoHeresy: The Psychological Seduction of Christianity (Revised &
Expanded), the Bobgans explain how psychological counseling—psychotherapy—
has slowly replaced Christian reliance on
the Cross and faith in the Bible to address
problems such as anger. They write:
“Previous to the influx of psychological theories and therapies, Christians turned to the Scriptures to
understand themselves and to live
accordingly. They turned to the Bible
regarding attitudes and actions. They
sought God regarding personal feelings and relationships. They found
solid solace, strength, and guidance
during difficult circumstances. Moreover, they learned the difference
between walking according to the old
ways of the world and walking according to the new life they had received
through Christ’s death, resurrection,
and gift of the Holy Spirit. Much of
this has been lost as Christians have
been adding the ways of the world to
the way of the cross.”
In the same book, the Bobgans give the
example of an influential minister who
prescribes this unbalanced blend of psychology and theology to people trying to
overcome anger:
“To explain his theory, [he] says, ‘...
energy cannot be destroyed; it can
only be transformed. Once you are
angry you are in possession of energy
which cannot be destroyed.’ [He]
warns, ‘If you don’t develop ways
of getting that energy out of you in
non-destructive activities, sooner or
later it will find symptomatic expression among the weakest of your
organic systems. So don’t clam up
and run the risk of damaging your
physical health.’
To release the anger energy, this minister
recommends, “tackling dummies, pounding mattresses, and punching bags” as
well as other activities.
Other psychologists dispute such claims.
In her article, “Anger Diffused,” social
psychologist Dr. Carol Tavris writes, “The
psychological rationale for ventilating
anger does not stand up under experimental scrutiny. The weight of the evidence indicates precisely the opposite:

FRANCES SWAGGART
Expressing anger makes you angrier, solidifies an angry attitude,
and establishes a hostile habit.” She later mentions that there is
“little evidence that suppressing anger is dangerous to health.”
SUBMISSION: THE CURE FOR ANGER
This is the problem with preachers preaching psychology: their
mixed message fails to align with other psychologists, let alone
the Word of God, and they don’t help anyone.
When the Bible says to submit yourselves unto the Lord, what
does that mean? I asked this question of my panel on Frances &
Friends in a discussion about anger, and I thought Dave Smith
summed it up nicely. He said:
ANGER AT GOD
People don’t just get angry at each other; they also get mad
at God. Tragic events beyond our control happen to people
everyday, and Christians are not immune. The difference is,
when tragedies come—child abuse, job loss, disease, divorce,
death—the Christian has the option of turning toward God for
comfort and strength to make it through. Unfortunately, the
majority of people in pain—Christians included—choose to
turn away from God. It’s easier to blame Him for the bad things
that happen in their lives, and they feel justified in their anger
toward Him.
To make matters worse, there are plenty of preachers standing
behind psychological pulpits and telling their congregations that
it’s okay to be angry at God. They encourage people to shake
their fists at God, yell at the Lord, and tell Him just how angry they
really are. “He’s God,” these preachers say. “He can handle it.”
“Submit yourselves therefore to God.” (James 4:7).
“When you get saved, you repent of sin, and you ask Christ
to come into your life as Saviour. But you also ask Him to
come into your life as Lord. That means you surrender control
of your life to Him. Another aspect of that is in Luke 9:23
where it says “deny self.” In other words, I’m not depending
on myself—my abilities, my strength, any of those kinds of
things—and I’m totally depending on Christ and who He is
and what He did on the Cross of Calvary. Then and only then
will the sin nature come under control and be deactivated,
so to speak, and then the Holy Spirit can come into my life
and can lead me, guide me, teach me—all the things that
the Holy Spirit wants to do. That’s the process of submitting
to God: it’s surrendering myself, denying self, taking up the
Cross, and following Jesus Christ. So that surrender of our
will to the will of God is a daily thing; it doesn’t just happen
when we get saved. ”
The Bobgans also address this point:
“Where in Scripture do we have an example of it’s okay to be
mad at God? Jonah was mad at God to his own detriment,
but no example can be found in Scripture where anger
at God is condoned. Even Michael the archangel, ‘when
contending with the devil he disputed about the body of
Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation,
but said, The Lord rebuke thee’ (Jude 9). How much more
serious to vent anger on God, who is our righteous, just,
and loving Creator! We know that the fear of God is the
beginning of wisdom. It would follow that to be angry at
God is the beginning of foolishness. King Solomon warns,
Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty
to utter anything before God: for God is in heaven, and thou
upon earth: therefore let thy words be few” (Eccl. 5:2). In
Scripture we are instructed to hate sin. Therefore we may
be angry over sin and evil. One may certainly speak to God
about anger over sin and evil, but it is wrong to be angry at
God. If a person is indeed angry at God, he must admit his
anger and confess his sin. One should also be encouraged
to confess all ungodly anger just as one should always admit
and confess sin to God according to the promise in I John
1:9. ‘If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to
forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.’ Denying the existence of angry thoughts and feelings
prevents confession and cleansing and thus leaves the
person in his sin.”
14
MAY 2016 THE EVANGELIST
Christians who want victory over anger need to ask themselves,
am I going to trust God and keep my faith in what Christ did at
the Cross, or am I going to substitute my will and my way?
Consider the words of the Lord Jesus Christ as He prayed in
the Garden of Gethsemane: “Father, if You be willing, remove
this cup from Me: nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done”
(Luke 22:42).

BUT DIDN’T THE LORD GET ANGRY?
“And He said unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath
days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace.
And when He had looked round about on them with anger, being
grieved for the hardness of their hearts, He said unto the man,
Stretch forth your hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand
was restored whole as the other” (Mark 3:4-5).
In his commentary on the book of Mark, my husband explains
why the Lord was angry:
“With the man standing in the midst of all the onlookers, and
the Pharisees standing or sitting nearby, Jesus, with a sweep
of His eyes, stares at them for a few moments with anger
registered on His countenance. In other words, the anger
is obvious to all. Here is the difference between the anger
of fallen man and the anger of the Sinless One. With fallen
man, anger is the desire of retaliation, punishing those by
whom you consider yourself unjustly treated. Hence, in men,
unrighteous anger springs from selflove; in Christ, it sprang
from the love of God, which must always be opposed to sin,
and especially this type of sin. Jesus loved God above all
things; hence, He was distressed and irritated on account of
the wrongs done to God by sin and sinners. Consequently,
His anger was a righteous zeal for the honor of God; and
16 MAY 2016 THE EVANGELIST
hence, it was mingled with grief because, in their blindness
and obstinacy, they would not acknowledge Him to be the
Messiah, but misrepresented His kindnesses wrought on the
sick on the Sabbath Day and found fault with them as evil.”
Twice in the Word of God, we also find the Lord, filled with
righteous indignation, cleansing the temple.
The first time was at the beginning of His earthly ministry:
“And the Jews’ passover was at hand, and Jesus went up
to Jerusalem, and found in the temple those that sold oxen
and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:
and when He had made a scourge of small cords, He drove
them all out of the temple, and the sheep and the oxen; and
poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables;
and said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence;
make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise”
(Jn. 2:13-16).
The second (and last) cleansing was at the end of His ministry:
“And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all
them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew
the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them
that sold doves, And said unto them, It is written, My house
shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a
den of thieves” (Matt. 21:12-13).
FRANCES SWAGGART
Throughout the Old and New Testaments, we find the prophets
and apostles expressing this same type of anger. So, is it right
for Christians to be angry?
Before I address that question, I want to include an important
point my husband made about the Lord demonstrating anger.
He said, “The zeal the Lord exhibited should be our zeal as well.
However, Jesus did this only as His Father told Him to do so. As
well, we too must be led strictly by the Lord. To do otherwise,
especially in matters of this nature, is to invite disaster. Even
though something is done in the will of God, with one being
totally led by the Spirit, that does not mean that there will not
be repercussions. There were with Jesus, and there will be with
us as well.”
Ezra Palmer Gould, who served in the Civil War and later became
a minister of the gospel, said, “Anger against wrong as wrong is a
sign of moral health.” This from a man who watched our country
break in half. Think of that.
More than 150 years later, we see America struggling to stay
America. It’s time for godly men and women to rise up in moral
indignation at the sin and iniquity that are destroying this nation.
If not the church, then who?
RIGHTEOUS ANGER
“Be you angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your
wrath: Neither give place to the devil” (Eph. 4:26-27).
As the body of Christ, we cannot be so passive in life that we let
just anything go by. We’ve got to get angry at sin. What’s happening in our nation, in the church, and how the enemy oppresses the
people of God—these things should make Christians angry. But
most of all, we should voice our anger at how the Lord is being
treated in all of this and how His Word is being misinterpreted,
especially in the church.

GIVE, SING, GLORY, SEEK, REMEMBER
by donnie swaggart
I Chronicles 16:7-12 — “Then on that day David delivered first this psalm to thank the Lord into the hand
of Asaph and his brethren. Give thanks unto the Lord, call upon His name, make known His deeds among
the people. Sing unto Him, sing psalms unto Him, talk you of all His wondrous works. Glory you in His holy
name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord. Seek the Lord and His strength, seek His face continually. Remember His marvelous works that He hath done, His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth.”
There are five great words found in this psalm which
comprise praise and worship in our living for God.
Verse 7 makes it very clear that these statements
were a “psalm” or “song” that Asaph, David’s choir
director, used to lead the people in a song of praise
and worship.
THE IMPORTANCE OF MUSIC IN CHURCH
Music and singing constitute the highest form of worship as it regards the Lord. We know this because of
the length of the book of Psalms, which is actually 150
songs, constituting the longest book in the Bible. For
the Holy Spirit to give that much time and space to
this form of worship proves the point.
To be honest, music in the church is the spiritual
barometer of the church. If the music is merely entertainment, as so much of it is, then there is no true
worship. Too many of today’s songs are written with
disordered harmony and melody that it’s impossible
to worship the Lord.
However, when the song has harmony and melody
given by the Lord, then the song will glorify the Lord—
20 MAY 2016 THE EVANGELIST
who He is, and what He has done—and the Holy Spirit
will then move in the hearts and lives of people and
greatly bless the people. If the music and singing are
as they ought to be, then it will include prayer, praise,
petition, and prophecy. It was to David whom the
foundation of this great form of worship was given to
Israel and thereby to the church. In short, as the music
goes, so goes the church.
Now let us look at the five words of the title of this
article.
GIVE
Verse 8 says, “Give thanks unto the Lord, call upon His
name, make known His deeds among the people.”
Most of our prayer time should be given over to thanking the Lord for what He has done for us, and what
He is doing for us.
Properly giving thanks to the Lord portrays the fact that
we know and understand what He has done for us. It
portrays our gratitude, which should be abundant. So,
whatever it is that we want from the Lord, we should
begin by “giving thanks unto the Lord.”

DONNIE SWAGGART
SING
SEEK
Verse 9 says, “Sing unto Him, sing psalms unto Him, talk you of
all His wondrous works.”
Verse 11 says, “Seek the Lord and His strength, seek His face
continually.”
The Holy Spirit here tells us that the Lord actually desires that we
“sing unto Him.” The idea is not that we have a beautiful voice,
but rather that we understand, once again, His nature and His
character. If the world can sing songs about people who have
done something noteworthy, then how much more should we
who are saved sing“His wondrous works.”
This verse means the Christian is to seek the Lord about everything and to seek Him continually.
GLORY
Verse 10 says, “Glory you in His holy name: Let the heart of them
rejoice who seek the Lord.”
The Scripture is very clear, Christians are to “glory in His holy
name.”
We presently have a greater privilege even than David had under
the old covenant. The name now is Jesus, and He is Lord. In
those days they were glorying His name by faith, but now we are
able to glorify the name of the Lord who has come and atoned
for the sins of humanity: “It is finished,” so lift up your voice and
glorify the Lord.
Only the Lord has the answer to all of life’s problems. He is
source of all that we need, and the Cross is the means by which
all that we need is given unto us.
We are to seek His strength, for we don’t have the power or
strength to get done what needs to be done. We are weak,
but He is strong.
REMEMBER
Verse 12 says, “Remember His marvelous works that He has done,
His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth.”
The text is emphatic: we are to remember His marvelous works.
We must constantly be remembering not only what He has done
in His Word, but we must also “remember the marvelous works”
that He has done in our lives.
So there you have it: Give, sing, glory, seek, remember.

A MISCONCEPTION OF THE CROSS OF CHRIST part iii
by gabriel swaggart
Luke 9:23 – “And He said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up
his cross daily, and follow Me”
THE DAY THE CROSS WAS REVEALED TO ME
I’ll never forget the day that the Message of the Cross
was revealed to me. It was a Sunday morning at Family
Worship Center, and I had been home for about a year
or so after attending a particular Christian university
in Oklahoma.
Up to that point in my life, I had little understanding
of the Cross of Christ. I knew the Cross for salvation,
but when it came to my everyday life and living, I was
clueless. I was trying to earn my sanctification from
God, and my faith was in my performance, which
brought about untold heartache and pain. There were
moments in my life when I wanted to throw in the white
towel because I could not live up to my own expectations or the expectations of others. I was fighting a
losing battle, and I did not know what to do.
22 MAY 2016 THE EVANGELIST
Then it happened. On that Sunday morning, while
sitting on the platform where all of the associate
pastors sit, I was listening to my grandfather preach.
As he was walking right in front of the platform, all
of a sudden he turned toward the camera. He made
a statement that he had made any number of times
before that day, and he has made it many times since
that day. He said, “The answer for which you seek is
found in the Cross.” These were the words that were
given to him by the Lord when he was seeking the face
of God regarding his own personal life.
As he made that statement, it was as if the blinders
were removed, and I could see what he was saying. I
can’t explain it any other way but to say that my whole
world changed. I got it! I finally got it! It was the very
thing that I was missing in my Christian life—the Cross
and my faith in that finished work. At that moment I
thought to myself (as so many others have) that everything would be so different. Victory was mine, and
there would be no more issues in life.
However, to my dismay, I found that I was wrong. I
did not count on the attacks of Satan growing more
powerful by the minute. I did not expect the powers
of darkness to come at me the way they did after
hearing and believing the Message of the Cross. It
felt as if Satan had set his sights on me and would stop
at nothing to destroy me. I did not understand this

GABRIEL SWAGGART
then; however, looking back on my life, I now realize that Satan
was trying to destroy my faith, or make me move my faith from
the Cross of Christ to something else. This is where the question comes in, “The Cross may work for you, but why doesn’t it
work for me?”
The idea is this: The Cross is the key to more abundant life (Jn.
10:10), and it is the only message in this world that can bring
about the deliverance that we need. There is no other message
that can bring about results as the Message of the Cross can.
Paul said, “The preaching of the Cross is to them who perish
foolishness; but unto us who are saved it is the power of God”
(I Cor. 1:18).
The Cross is the answer for the problems of man, both saved
and unsaved. However, do not think for one second that Satan
is going to look the other way at the very moment you begin to
look to the Cross for your everyday life and living. He will fight
you every step of the way, and do so with a ferocity that would
seem too much to bear.
MOVING YOUR FAITH FROM THE CROSS TO
SOMETHING ELSE
Think of this for a moment: Have you ever stopped to think
about why Satan is fighting you so much harder now that you
have begun to place your faith in Christ and the Cross? He does
so because he knows that you now have found the answer and
the key to all victory. If he can get you to become discouraged,
distraught, or downtrodden, it will make you want to quit, which
is his ultimate goal.
Notice the words of Christ when He told Peter, “that your faith
fail not.” Christ knew that Peter would fail, but He told him that
He had prayed for him that his faith fail not.
As believers, we are going to fail. That is a given, and there is
nothing on this planet that we can do to stop that from happening because we are flawed. However, thank God that every
moment of the day, we have the assurance of knowing that Christ
is interceding on our behalf (Heb. 7:25). Thank God that we have
Him interceding on our behalf. If it were not for Christ and the
Cross, we would surely perish.
JUST BELIEVE
Many “try” the Message of the Cross not understanding the
attack of the enemy that will be leveled against them, and they
soon turn away and say it doesn’t work for them. I had a very
similar moment.
After coming to an understanding of the Cross regarding
sanctification, the powers of darkness soon came my way, and
I experienced a struggle greater than before I understood the
Cross. It was a Wednesday evening around 5 p.m., and I was
about to get ready for service (Crossfire was held on Thursday
nights at that time).
As a believer, you have to understand that the attacks Satan
levels against you are not so much against you personally, but
rather against your faith. He wants to destroy your faith, or at the
very least, severely weaken your faith. It is the desire of Satan
to move your faith away from the Cross of Christ to something
else altogether.
Here I was, the associate youth pastor of Crossfire, and I did not
understand at all what was happening. Sitting on the edge of
my bed in my apartment where I lived at the time, I asked God
what was happening. My exact words that evening were, “Lord,
I thought the Cross was supposed to work.” It was just seconds
after those words left my mouth that I felt the Lord speak to my
heart and say, “Do you want to be made free?” Take note of the
words that He spoke to me. He asked me if I wanted to be made
free, not set free. I was set free at Calvary the very moment of
salvation, but made free?
Jesus told Peter, “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has desired to
have you, that he may sift you as wheat: But I have prayed for
you, that your faith fail not” (Lk. 22:31-32).
My answer was in the affirmative. The very next thing the Lord
said to me that evening was, “Just believe.” That was it, simple
and to the point—believe!

GABRIEL SWAGGART
That’s the key to continuing on this Christian journey with your
faith in Christ and the Cross—believe. This means that no matter
what attacks the enemy brings your way, he is trying to move
your faith from the Cross of Christ to something else. You must
keep your faith in the finished work of Christ. If you stay the
course and continue to keep your faith in Christ and the Cross,
you will experience victory in every capacity of life.
We need the help of the Holy Spirit in our lives on a daily basis,
and we are guaranteed His help as long as we daily look to Christ
and the Cross. The Holy Spirit is the power source that helps
us and brings about the victory that we so desperately need.
However, we must know that He can only work in our lives as
long as we look to Jesus Christ and Him crucified (Rom. 8:1-2).
By continuing to believe that the Cross of Christ is the answer,
we will have the help of the Holy Spirit to do a work in our lives
that we cannot do ourselves.
IF YOU DON’T QUIT, HE WON’T QUIT
In closing this chapter, I want to say that the Cross works, and
it is the only thing that does work; however, never think that we
will no longer have the sights of the enemy set in our direction.
That’s not going to happen, but if we continue to keep our faith
tied to the Cross, then we will have victory over the world, the
flesh, and the Devil.
The Bible guarantees that “sin shall not have dominion over you”
(Rom. 6:14) and that “we are more than conquerors” through
Jesus Christ (Rom. 8:37).
Believer, no matter what happens in life, if you don’t quit, He
won’t quit.

For those of you who are not familiar with digital television, these are free “old fashioned TV channels” that are able to be picked up with a digital tuner and antenna. Most new
televisions are equipped with built-in digital tuners or you can purchase a tuner from your local electronics store (Best Buy®, Radio Shack®, etc.). As well, you can purchase
the proper antenna at your local electronics store. Many viewers under the broadcast signal of the television station can use a small, digital antenna inside the home. For those
on the outer edge of the signal or to receive the best signal, an outdoor antenna may be required. Both indoor and outdoor antennas are available for less than $50!

I FOUND SBN AND HEARD THE MESSAGE OF WHAT
JESUS DID ON THE CROSS
MINISTER: EXPOSITOR’S STUDY BIBLE IS A GREAT
HELP TO SERMON PREPARATION
DEAR EVANGELIST: My testimony to all members of your
ministry: I was sitting browsing the many ministries online and
lots of messages of “how to grow as a Christian,” but something
was wrong. I told the Lord I was so confused. Why can’t it be so
simple? All I want is the truth. I heard a small still voice that said,
“Jimmy Swaggart. Look for Jimmy Swaggart.” I typed his name
and I found your website. I found SBN and heard the message
of what Jesus did on the Cross. I felt whole again and my walk
with Jesus has been strengthened. The Lord is my identity now.
I no longer search because I have found life in Christ. Thank
you for all that you do.
DEAR EVANGELIST: Having been in the ministry since 1977, I
have accumulated several study Bibles over the years. Yet, as
good as they were, the explanatory notes were either at the rear
of the Bible or tucked away at the bottom of a page and rarely
did they follow each verse. Therefore, I decided to purchase The
Expositor’s Study Bible from your ministry and what a difference!
It is now a joy to read the Scriptures as the explanation follows
precisely after each verse and brings clarity and understanding
at once to the text. The Lord has richly granted you the Spirit of
wisdom and discernment, and you have been richly blessed in
the arrangement of this study Bible. It has also greatly assisted
me in my sermon preparation and planning, as I am able to bring
the riches of these notes to the attention and edification of the
congregations. May the Lord continue to bless and enrich you
with His grace and give you the strength to pursue His will for
His glory and the spiritual enlightenment of His people.

BROTHER DONNIE’S PREACHING REACHES THE
DEEPEST PART OF MY SOUL
DEAR EVANGELIST: You guys are changing lives. You are
changing mine. I cry and feel the love of Jesus when I watch
Brother Donnie preach. The messages always come when they
are needed the most. I feel the Holy Spirit moving when you
guys preach. Brother Donnie has a special way of preaching that
I feel reaches the deepest part of my soul. It’s hard to explain,
but I know that you guys are instruments of God, and I admire
you all. Because of what you are doing we understand so many
things now; before we were blind. I love all of you. I feel I am
part of your family. I admire your ministry. Thank you, from the
bottom of my heart.
BELIEVER FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT WHILE
LISTENING TO JSM MUSIC
DEAR EVANGELIST: I am an indigenous missionary working
in the northern part of Nigeria, West Africa, especially among
the rural people and Muslim communities. Your broadcast and
ministry have greatly impacted me and has given me a different
perspective to what message our world needs—the Message
of the Cross!
DEAR EVANGELIST: I am a Media Church member and have
desired to be filled with the Holy Spirit for quite some time. I
didn’t know why it never seemed to happen, but I would not
give up. Well, the other day I had put five of your CDs on my
player and lay on the couch to listen and worship my Lord. I
really don’t know how long I had been there, but I remember the
song, “Holy Spirit Flow Through Me,” was playing. Suddenly,
this most precious feeling came into my being, I can’t really
explain it, but it lasted for quite some time. Then I realized I was
speaking in another language. I have never had an experience
like this before, but I am longing to have His presence fill me
like this over and over again. I now pray in the Spirit during my
personal time with the Lord. I can personally say that your songs
and music are Holy Spirit filled.

MAY 2016 THE EVANGELIST
HAPPY THAT JSM IS WORKING TO GET MESSAGE OF
THE CROSS TO FIJI ISLANDS
THE MESSAGE OF THE CROSS HAS BROKEN THE
GAMBLING HABIT
DEAR EVANGELIST: I thank Jesus for your ministry. I have been
blessed by listening to all of the teaching and preaching. I’m
from Fiji Island, and I live in England. I’m just writing to let your
ministry know that I’m so blessed and thankful to the Lord for
the opportunity to hear again the Message of the Cross. I am so
happy that I hear from the man of God, Pastor Jimmy Swaggart,
that they a working to open in Fiji Islands. Thank God. It’s been
a real blessing. Thank you for continuing to preach the Message
of The Cross. For four months now, I’ve been listening to the
preaching and Message of the Cross.
DEAR EVANGELIST: Dear Brother Swaggart, you have been
quite a blessing to me over the years. I have read your Bible and
it’s incredible. In fact, because I read it so much, the Lord has
to get on me to put it down so I can pray and do other things!
He has to do the same thing with SBN. You will be pleased to
know that the Message of the Cross has broken the gambling
habit in my life. I am now studying to be a minister. You have
no idea how this has helped me out, and I fully intend to spread
the message to the homeless and the addicts that I deal with.
—England
THE MESSAGE IS NO GOOD WITHOUT THE MESSENGER
DEAR EVANGELIST: I get so excited about my new relationship
with Jesus. It truly is like being born again—again. I wish I had
known about the Message of the Cross years ago. I used to
wonder why I felt so far away from Jesus—all those years wasted
going from one doing to another doing and looking for Him. I
am so grateful for the Message of the Cross. A little slogan to
think about: “The message is no good without the messenger.”
So keep going; this is one person who has truly received the
message through you, the messenger.
—Georgia
—Florida
MESSAGE OF THE CROSS HAS BEEN AN EYE-OPENER
DEAR EVANGELIST: I wanted to let you all know how blessed I
have been by the Message of the Cross. I cannot tell you what
an eye-opener it has been. I realize the Holy Spirit is very much
at work in my life. I have never felt so free as I continue to look
unto Jesus and His completed work for me at Calvary. I don’t
know how to thank you all enough for bringing this message
to God’s people. Truly His church is being held captive to all
manner of traditions of men. One day I cried out to the Lord to
please help me know the truth and help me find a Christian radio
station where the gospel is preached. The churches where I live
are following something other than our Lord. I am fellowshipping
with you all over the Internet.
—Ohio
THANK GOD FOR THE SONLIFE BROADCASTING
NETWORK
DEAR EVANGELIST: I found SBN about six months ago. I’ve
always preached the Cross but now with a greater anointing in
the finished work of the Cross! I didn’t understand, but I bought
all the commentaries, The Expositor’s Study Bible, and the book,
Message of the Cross, and it has changed our church for the
better with the Holy Spirit. Thank God for SBN!
SONLIFE BROADCASTING NETWORK IS AN ANSWER
TO PRAYERS
DEAR EVANGELIST: Thank you, thank you, thank you for being
there. So frustrated in trying to find a church that preaches
truth that we had given up trying. And then we found you and
SonLife—an answer to our prayers!

LIVING BY THE WORD OF GOD
by loren larson
Luke 4:4 —
“And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but
by every word of God.”
THE WORD IS OFTEN NEGLECTED
It seems that in our busy day-to-day lives, we spend a
lot of time and give a lot of attention to a wide variety
of information sources. We are now able to keep up
with news from around the world, 24 hours a day. We
can check to see who has written what on various
social media channels. We check our emails several
times a day. We can evaluate the status of our checking
accounts and our credit cards immediately through
the Internet. And we can look to see what changes
in weather might be in the forecast. None of these
activities are wrong in and of themselves.
Much of the information that we gather is information
that helps us to live out our daily lives successfully.
However, having said this, I daresay that the most
important source of information by which a person
might live a fulfilled, blessed, and satisfied life is far
too often and altogether neglected.
this statement? He simply meant that although natural
food was important to the natural well-being of any
person, it was even more important that an individual
live his life guided by the Word of God, the Bible. This
would make the Bible by far the most important source
of information pertaining to life that is available to the
human being.
THE BENEFITS OF THE BIBLE
I fear that most modern-day Christians, much less the
unsaved, spend hardly any time reading, learning,
defining, or applying the Bible to their everyday lives.
Yet Jesus Himself said that the Word of God held the
answer to our daily needs.
As Christians, we must learn what God has to say
about our everyday situations. I have heard some say
that the Bible is no longer relevant or applicable to
the needs of modern man. There has never been a
bigger lie stated!
The Bible holds the key to man’s relationship with
God. It tells how to enter that relationship, how to
maintain that relationship, how to be blessed through
that relationship, and it explains how to be spiritually
transformed into the person that God desires us to be.
Jesus was quoting Moses when He stated that man
should not live by bread alone. What did He mean by
38 MAY 2016 THE EVANGELIST
The Bible teaches us what help from God is available
during our earthly sojourn—guiding us in the way of
holiness and righteousness—and prepares us to be
able to exhibit the kind of life that glorifies our Lord
and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
LOREN LARSON
Whenever I am troubled and don’t know which way to turn, I look
for an answer or a direction from the Word of God. Morning
after morning, as I sit down to read it, I bring the needs that
are weighing on my heart before the Lord and ask the Lord to
use His Word to direct my steps, attitudes, and actions. He has
always directed me through the concepts, precepts, and statutes
found in His Word.
But, if we pay no attention to Word of God, if we refuse to
become a disciplined Bible reader and trust in other available
sources to guide us, then the ever-changing challenges of life
can very quickly become the most difficult experiences.
LEARN THE BIBLE AT WEBC
I offer to you several ways to engage in the study of God’s Word.
If you happen to be a young person who is about to graduate
from high school and searching for your future, then let us help
you establish the stability of that future.
I suggest that you consider coming to Baton Rouge and entering
into a process of study that will teach you the Bible. We are a
Bible college! We want to teach you the basic concepts of living
for God. We want you to have a personal relationship with God
as outlined by the Scriptures.
Inside our classrooms, during our chapel time, and through
the many special services held at Family Worship Center—the
home church of Jimmy Swaggart Ministries—the Spirit of God
is allowed the freedom to move.
You will also become an immediate part of reaching the world
with the gospel through the SonLife Broadcasting Network. The
classroom will equip you with information, and the atmosphere
will require that you immediately put those truths into practice.
It doesn’t matter if you don’t feel a call to the five-fold ministry.
Your need to learn the information contained in the Bible is the
prerequisite to living for God for every believer.
We welcome students from every age group, not just those first
starting out in life. If you have the time and are able to be in this
atmosphere, there is not a better way to learn the Word of God.
Give us one school year of time to instruct you in the dynamic of
a truly Pentecostal atmosphere, and you will never be the same
again. You will learn the Word of God because that’s all we teach,
and you will be challenged to live every day accountable to and
desirous of every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
If you are unable to physically attend WEBC, we also have our
online courses available in both credit and audit form. We keep
tuition low to help accommodate those interested in pursuing
a Bible education.
For more information about WEBC&S, or to request a catalog,
please call the Bible college at (225) 768-3890. Information about
online courses can be found on our website, onlinecourses.

SUPERSESSIONISM part iv

Modern day Israel is nothing less than a miracle. For
many centuries Jews lived in diaspora, as God promised they would, for their disobedience to the covenant
that He made with them.
“And the Lord shall scatter thee among all people, from
one end of the earth even unto the other; and there
thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor
thy fathers have known … And among these nations
shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy
foot have rest: but the Lord shall give thee a trembling
heart, and failing eyes and sorrow of mind: and thy
life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt
fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of
thy life.” (Deut. 28:64-66)
Since the time of Roman occupation of Israel to the
time of the Reformation, Jews had to survive in foreign
lands while suffering persecution, ridicule, and much
discrimination. Both Roman Catholicism and Islam
viewed the Jews negatively and oftentimes blamed
them for all of the problems in the world. Take for
example Martin Luther. Luther is recognized as one
of the great primary reformers, but he had embraced
the sentiment of his time when it came to Jews. In
Martin Luther’s book, About the Jews and Their Lies,
Luther writes:
Herewith you can readily see how they understand
and obey the fifth commandment of God, namely,
that they are thirsty bloodhounds and murderers
of all Christendom, with full intent, now more than
fourteen hundred years, and indeed they were
often burned to death upon accusations that they
had poisoned water and wells, stolen children, and
torn and hacked them apart, in order to cool their
temper secretly with Christian blood.
And:
Now see what a fine, thick fat lie that is when they
complain that they are held captive by us. It is
more that fourteen hundred years since Jerusalem
was destroyed, and at this time it is almost three
hundred years since we Christians have been
tortured and persecuted by the Jews all over the
world … so that we might well complain that they
had now captured us and killed us—which is the
open truth. Moreover, we do not know to this
day which devil has brought them here into our
country; we did not look for them in Jerusalem.
JEWS VIEWED AS A RACE
Luther’s picture of the Jews is that they want to rule
the world and are archenemies and killers of Jesus
Christ and all Christendom. This attitude toward Jews
was fostered from a history of maltreatment by the
Roman Catholic Church and carried into the mind-set
of reformers. With great significance again in Germany,
this protracted hatred manifested not long before
World War I.
In 1895, there was an anti-Semitic faction in Germany
that opposed Jews, not because of their religion but
because of their race. Later, Hitler would see them no
differently than the 16th century clerics who viewed
40 MAY 2016 THE EVANGELIST
JOHN ROSENSTERN
them as hostile, or the 19th century anti-Semites who were
influenced by late 17th century caricatures of Jews depicted
with racial characteristics. These unique physical attributes were
further characterized with racial qualities that included the Jewish
race as “being evil.”
German Reichstag speaker Hermann Ahlwardt would say, “What
God does not improve with such terrible blows, that we should
not change with words and deeds.” He was saying that there was
some evil in Jews that even the fires of God could not extinguish.
The Jew “cannot help himself” because his racial qualities drive
him. The Jew was viewed as antisocial and unchangeable.
JEWISH HOMELAND
DELAY
Theodore Herzl formed the World Zionist Organization and promoted Jewish migration to Palestine/Israel in an effort to form a
Jewish state. The phrase, “if you will it, it is no dream” became
a popular slogan of the Zionist movement.
Although God had scattered Jews throughout the world, He
also never lost sight of them. He promised that a remnant would
remain. However, Europe and the Middle East would be changed
with the onslaught of World War I. Nations would ally with nations
and tremendous fighting would create new loyalties, but it would
also reinforce anti-Semitism.
Herzl would publish books to reveal his desire to create a secular
Jewish state. His primary reason was this: “It is the restoration of
the Jewish State…. The decisive factor is our propelling force.
And what is that force? The plight of the Jews….”
Herzl did not view the Jewish question as a social or religious
one but a national one. He said, “We sincerely tried everywhere
to merge with the national communities in which we live, seeking
only to preserve the faith of our fathers.” He added, “Israel is
our unforgettable historic homeland.”
The ambition and zeal of Jews seeking their new nation seemed
inevitable after the Great War, and new hope emerged with the
Balfour Declaration awarding land to the Zionists for their return.
The promise was not fulfilled speedily, or under the British Mandate. Instead, large awards of land were given to Arab leaders
for their assistance to the Allies.
Herzl, now passed away, and his goal of creating a new Israel with
his brand of “mutualism”—a blend of capitalism and socialism
with people of every origin, descent, and religion being welcome—was squashed. Jews in Palestine/Israel began to suffer
pogroms—organized killings of Jews by Arab Muslim leaders,
initiated by Haj Amin al-Husseini. Islamic religious fervor kept a
constant stride against hopeful Jews from settling back into their
land peacefully. Hostilities would increase against the Jew in Germany, which would make the German nation ripe for Adolf Hitler.
PREPARATION FOR A NATION
God was working to bring His people back to their land. The
greatest miracle of all time might well be that of Israel returning
to her homeland— the return of a people scattered throughout
every culture of the world in every climate, yet they retained
their ethnic and religious identity and formed a nation— Israel.
In next month’s article, we will look closer at the rise of Adolf
Hitler and his efforts to fulfill Satan’s plan of exterminating the
Jew. Satan failed then and he will fail now. He missed the primary one who conquered him through death, the one made of
a woman and born under the law—Jesus Christ, the Messiah!
He ever lives, and He is why Israel will prevail.

RIGHTLY DIVIDING THE WORD OF TRUTH
It has been said that if God’s spiritual food was physical food, then
most Christians would be skin and bones. As believers we need
to be people of the book—the Bible. We need to study to show
ourselves approved unto God. We need to be workmen who are
not ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (II Tim. 2:15).
straight; to handle rightly” (Vincent Word Studies). As a tent
maker, Paul knew the importance of cutting a straight line. Spiritually, it means not to deviate in our interpretation or application
of God’s Word. We do not make God’s Word line up to what
we want it to say; we line up our lives to what God’s Word says.
PAUL’S ADVICE TO A YOUNG MINISTER
CROOKED LINES
Paul, knowing that the time of his execution was close, wrote
to Timothy to encourage him in the faith. This important verse
begins with an imperative verb. An imperative is simply a command. Paul wasn’t suggesting that we study to show ourselves
approved unto God; he was commanding it.
I have seen some pretty crooked lines and shoddy workmanship presented as teaching from preachers not spending time
in God’s presence. If you don’t know God’s Word, you’ll fall
for some of the foolishness passing as “new revelation.” The
Bible is the basis by which new revelations, prophecies, or the
newest “revivals” are evaluated. The church must examine
every sermon, prophesy, word of edification, and occurrences
in the church using God’s Word. Only accept it if it’s 100 percent
scriptural. Cut straight, my friend, and make sure your work is
approved unto God.
STUDY
The idea presented is that of a workman whose finished product
is brought for inspection. Seeing that the one inspecting our
work is God Himself, the work must be diligently performed. The
Greek word for study is spoudazo meaning “to give diligence,
earnestly presenting yourselves unto God.” Everybody wants to
be approved. Sometimes we are more diligent in seeking man’s
approval than we are in seeking God’s approval. Paul made it
clear that it’s not the approval of man that we need to be diligent
to receive but the approval of God.
AN UNCHANGING STANDARD
For something to be approved, it has to be tested against a
known set standard of excellence. For doctrine, that standard
is the same yesterday, today, and forever. It is the same for
you as it is for me. It is not a subjective truth, which varies from
person to person or from situation to situation. It is an objective
truth, which remains the same regardless of the person or the
circumstances.
RIGHTLY DIVIDING
In Greek, the phrase “rightly dividing” is orthotomeo meaning
“cutting straight, to hold a straight course; generally, to make

BUT IT’S IN THE WORD
Just because it’s found in the Bible does not mean that it is to
be used as a pattern in the church today. You have to rightly
divide God’s Word. Is it a unique example or a normative pattern? The Jerusalem church, having everything in common, was
a historic fact—a unique example. No other church followed in
its footsteps. Whereas speaking in tongues upon first receiving
the baptism of the Holy Spirit was clearly a pattern (normative
pattern) in the book of Acts. We can’t establish doctrine on
unique examples of historic facts.
SCRIPTURE INTERPRETS SCRIPTURE
Since everything should be interpreted in the light of Scripture,
it is imperative that we use Scripture to interpret Scripture. We
cannot formulate doctrine based on an obscure interpretation
of a solitary verse. True doctrine will always harmonize with all
of God’s Holy Word.

WILDERNESS CHRISTIANS
by dave smith
Exodus 3:8 — “And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to
bring them up out of the land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey.”
WHERE ARE YOU?
Everyone is either in Egypt, the wilderness, or the Promised Land.
Egypt is a symbol of the world (I Jn. 2:15), which is opposed to
the things of God (James 4:4). When the Israelites were in Egypt,
they were serving idols and they were slaves to the Egyptians.
They were used and abused by their taskmasters, like Satan, who
came to steal, kill, and destroy (Jn. 10:10). This is what it is like
for the unsaved who are dominated by the sin nature.
At the other end of the spectrum is the Promised Land. This is
the abundant life Jesus provided (Jn. 10:10) that includes being
saved and living a victorious Christian life. This is a description
of the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23) and all of the benefits of
the Cross being manifested in a believer’s life. It is the daily
fulfillment of the promises of God as believers continue to deny
self, take up the Cross daily, and follow Christ (Lk. 9:23).
who are saved and have left the world, but who have not gone
on into the Promised Land. God calls them carnal Christians (1
Cor. 3:1-4; Rom. 7:14), lukewarm (Rev. 3:16-17), and salt that has
lost its savour (Lk. 14:34-35).
RESULTS OF BELIEVERS WHO STAY IN
THE WILDERNESS
First, staying in the wilderness results in a waste of time, money,
efforts, souls, and influence.
Second, if continued, it will cause spiritual death (Rom. 8:6).
Third, it means not pleasing God (Rom. 8: 6).
Fourth, the longer believers stay in the wilderness, the more
likely they are to go back to the world (Ex. 16:3; 17:3; Num.
11:4-5; 14:1-4).
Fifth, any time they reject truth, they become more spiritually
hardened, blinded, and insensitive to the Holy Spirit.
Sixth, their influence becomes more neutralized the longer they
stay in the wilderness.
Seventh, because the wilderness is like a desert, it lacks spiritual
food and water, so they will be weakened and eventually die.
Eighth, they will be unstable in all their ways (James 1:8).
Ninth, it is sin (James 4:7; Rom. 14:23).
HOW WOULD BELIEVERS KNOW IF THEY ARE
WILDERNESS CHRISTIANS?
The wilderness was only supposed to be a temporary transition
from Egypt to the Promised Land. But because of their rebellion
and unbelief, the Israelites stayed there 40 years, and lost a whole
generation. Unfortunately, this is the picture of many Christians
44 MAY 2016 THE EVANGELIST
First, they would be lacking in the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23).
Second, they would manifest works of the flesh repeatedly
(Gal. 5:19-21).
DAVE SMITH
Third, they would fulfill the lust of the flesh instead of walking
in the Spirit (Gal. 5:16).
Fourth, they would be spiritually satisfied instead of hungering
and thirsting after the things of God (Matt. 5:6).
Fifth, they would be giving a higher priority to seeking possessions, position, power, popularity, and pleasure than God
(Matt. 6:33).
Sixth, they would be selfish and more concerned about their
own interests than those of others (Phil. 2:4).
Seventh, they would rather be a taker than a giver (Acts 20:35).
Eighth, they would constantly be working and loaded down with
religious works, but never doing enough to find rest (Matt. 11:28).
Finally, they would continually repeat sins and ask for forgiveness,
but gain no victory.
HOW CAN A PERSON GET INTO THE PROMISED LAND?
The way out of sin and into victory has already been provided
by Jesus Christ on the Cross, so there is nothing that can or has
to be done to earn it. But, no one has to stay in Egypt or the
wilderness any longer. It cannot be accomplished by fighting,
trying to overcome, or saying no to sin, but only by saying yes
to God. That means simply repenting, trusting that Jesus paid
the full price for their sins to be forgiven and overcome, and to
live in that faith daily for the rest of their lives (Lk. 9:23).

TELEVISION
We are presently getting more emails, more letters, and
more phone calls from other countries of the world—literally
all around the world—than ever before. We are getting correspondence from places that we never dreamed that television was being aired in that part of the world; however, what
is happening is, they are pulling it down from the satellites,
and we cover most of the world by satellite. It’s the gospel
of Jesus Christ, and it is presented by the power of the Holy
Spirit, and there is nothing in the world more powerful than
that. We give the Lord all the praise and all the glory.
There’s nothing in the world more valuable than the Word of
God. So whatever it is that you do, if you can, avail yourself
of the opportunity of getting yourself the very finest Bible
that we have, as it regards production. There is nothing in
the world like genuine leather, and that’s the cover that’s on
the Signature Edition.
As you can see, the price is cut to the bone in this issue of
The Evangelist. If you so like, at the next Bible-thon, the
price will be cut in half for even a greater savings. Whatever and whichever, take advantage of it now. You won’t be
disappointed.
THE RALLIES
WHAT WE ARE SEEING NOW
Of course I’m speaking of the rallies conducted by Donnie
and Gabriel. To be sure, when they come to your area, or
within driving distance, whatever you do, you must not miss
them. There is nothing in the world like the Spirit and power
of God moving and operating in these services. People are
saved; lives are changed and there’s nothing greater than
that. And beside all of that, it’s the most exciting place in
the world to be. You don’t want to miss it!
What we are seeing now is beautiful to behold, for which we
give the Lord all the praise and glory; however, what we are
seeing now is only a pinprick, so to speak, as by comparison
to what it’s going to be. I believe we are going to see a harvest of souls such as the world has never known in its history.
I believe the Lord has told me this, and I am anticipating
and expecting it to happen. That being the case, it will take
an anointing of the Holy Spirit that’s greater than anything
we’ve seen in the past. I would urge you, please, to pray for
us. I depend on that, I believe that, and I solicit your prayers,
and do so constantly.
I personally do not believe there are many preachers in
the world today who are preaching under such a powerful
anointing as Donnie and Gabriel, and in fact that would go
for all of the preachers here at Family Worship Center. It is
as if the anointing of the Holy Spirit is increasing almost by
the day. Once again, we thank the Lord.
THE EXPOSITOR’S STUDY BIBLE
As I dictate these notes, we have nearly reached the 2.5 million mark for The Expositor’s Study Bible. How we thank the
Lord for that.
And let me say one more thing: I don’t care how many
Expositor’s that you have, if you don’t have the deluxe edition, which is beautiful, has a genuine leather cover, and
will last a lifetime with proper care, then you ought to make
sure you get it.
46 MAY 2016 THE EVANGELIST
THE MESSAGE OF THE CROSS
The Holy Spirit, I do believe, wants this message—the Message of the Cross—to be given to the entirety of the church
world and the world in general, for that matter. This is what
the Holy Spirit is presently saying to the modern church: It
must return to the Cross. There is no other place—only the
Cross, only the Cross, only the Cross! Thank you so very,
very much for being a part of what God is doing. Please
understand, we believe that you are called of God, exactly as
we are. You cannot do without us, and we cannot do without
you. It’s just that simple.
FROM ME TO YOU
HOW THRILLED WE ARE TO HAVE YOU
I’m speaking of those who live elsewhere in this great nation,
and yet come by Family Worship Center to be with us in
service. How so happy we are to have you. We believe that
it will be well worth your while in coming, so we would urge
each of you to come. If you are anywhere close to Baton
Rouge, then make Family Worship Center a part of your
visit. I don’t think you will be disappointed.
Also, we have people calling who want to move here to be in
the church. How so very happy we are to have you, providing that’s what the Lord wants you to do.
Please understand, except in very limited circumstances, we
have no employment for other people. As well, we have no
accommodations for those who desire to stay. I wish we did,
but we don’t. So if you come here, you must understand that
you must provide for your own expenses, etc.
So, what am I saying? I’m saying that irrespective of your
age, if it’s at all possible, you ought to be in these meetings.
To be sure, you will be blessed, that I guarantee.
Yes, the greater part of the audience is young people. Get
those kids fired up with the Holy Spirit, and you are talking
about an energy that is unparalleled. In other words, it’s the
place to be.
So, whether your hair is gray or whatever, make your plans
to be in this youth conference. You won’t be disappointed.
Jimmy Swaggart
THE INTERNATIONAL YOUTH CONFERENCE
The dates for International Youth Conference 2016 are July
20-24. If you think these meetings are just for teenagers,
then you could not be more wrong. It is the same as the
campmeetings—the preaching, the music, the worship—it’s
identical.
