DANCING IN OUR WORLD
SW District news

Afternoon visit
In April, we attended the Northeast Festival in
Glenpool, OK at their wonderful conference center. Northeast District went all out on making this a
wonderful event. We were asked to take part their
fashion show and had a great time showing off our
new OSDF dress while representing the federation,
their theme was UP, UP, AND AWAY. Everyone
was very friendly made us feel very welcome, the
callers were great and went out of their way to
interact with the audience and the dance floor was
packed, we will look forward to attending next
year’s festival.
In May, we attended the South Central Spring
Festival in Lawton, OK at the Ben F. Veit Activity
Center. This was a great location for the festival
and they had the room decorated to fit the theme,
REMEMBER WHEN. They had great callers who
kept the floor rocking with all of their great tunes.
We were very impressed with the South Central
Board, throughout the evening we were approached and “Thanked” for attending their festival. They went out of their way to make us feel
welcome. We also took home some nice prizes.
While Robert & Billie were passing out the festival
tickets, we had a nice surprise, Norvell Dalley
decided he was ready for an outing and came into
OKC with Mary. We pray that he regains his
strength and feels better soon. Mollie Guthrie recently had knee surgery, we hope that she is doing
better by now. It is not easy selling tickets when
your leg hurts. She would rather be driving away
with the winning ticket.
Speaking of selling tickets; the Snow White Bandit
is attracting a lot of attention, I noticed the cars
kept circling while they were checking out this

year’s great car. We hope that each District
tries to out sell the other districts. We hope to
visit your area soon.
You never know when or where we might show
up next. We attended the Boggy Creek Ranch
16th Annual Barn Dance at Jack & Peggy Norman’s large red old fashioned barn. I loved the
square dancers hanging on the front side of the
barn. Their club graduated their new dancers
that evening and they look like keepers. The
threat of a storm did not keep the dancers away
and the wind helped cool off the dance floor.
The 62nd Nationals, June 26th – 29th is just a few
weeks away, we hope to gain a lot of new registrations before the start of the Nationals. We
look forward to seeing you there.
Route
66 Jamboree in Southwest District is on July
12th &13th, 2013 in Elk City.
Be
sure to add Panhandle District’s “Fall FunFest”, Saturday, November 23rd at the VFW
Building in Perryton, TX to your OSDF Visitation calendar. We plan to be there.

Central District—Jim and Ruth Ford
OK, Mister Big Sashay Editor!
You asked for an article! Print
this, Buddy!
It is not only the wind outside
whirling around at two hundred
miles an hour , we can’t even
keep our hats on in the house or
find our car keys. We are going in circles or are we going
“insigainseairene?”, opps! spell
check just shorted out.
Jim told me if I say, “yes, to
one more opportunity he is
going to change the locks on
the door. How dare he cause
me to miss a blessing! Relate
to that, if you will! It’s this
darn theme, “Together We Can
– Relate, Dedicate, Circulate” –
that is exactly what it is. Once
upon a time, a long, long, long
time ago, we looked forward to
dancing two nights a month.
Now we look forward to staying home twice a month. We
had so many eggs in our basket
that we had to hide some under
our bed. That’s not a pretty
thought. Oh, well we can
move before those eggs hatch.
It is friends like you, Mike and
Myrna, who will not let us get
out of the fast lane. And, the
Central District Board, in their
pretty black and pink attire;
clubs in Central District with
their clever theme dances; Anniversaries, Ticket Sales,
(everyone wants that sexy car),
Ad sales; Blood Drive, Food
Drives, Board Meetings; to
heck with the laundry.
If I had time, I’d schedule a hot
flash! Save that ‘til later, this
is more fun. Here they come,
5,000 colorful, high-stepping
“wanna have a good time”
dancers ready to blow into
downtown Oklahoma City for
the 62nd National Square Dance
Convention®. Keep smiling!

Would you write an Article?
We are looking for square dancers to write a POSITIVE article about something happened, happening, or
someone that you think did a BIG PLUS for square dancing. Let’s toot our own horn and let the square
dance world know that there are great things happening in square dancing. We hear so much about what
is wrong or we are loosing dancers and clubs, we can’t get students. Why can we not hear about the
GOOD things? The media says pain and terror sell newspapers. Well, we just want to feel good when
we read about square dancers and we do not have to pay for our email copy of the SASHAY.
1st Vice President—Bill and Molly Guthrie
Hello to all the Oklahoma Dancers. Boy, how time
has flown. Only a couple of weeks left until the Nationals. We are really getting excited.
Then we move on to the State Festival in November. The assignments are out and I know the districts are busy working on their assignments. If you
need help, please call us---580-353-1762.
Bill and Molly Guthrie
Also, you might consider making you reservations
at the Biltmore on Meridian for the festival. The
rates are very reasonable and they include breakfast with your room. Plan to attend the festival.
You'll have a good time.

Square Dance Association of Green Country District—
Jim and Julie Reese, President
Its summertime and we are all looking
forward to fun and fellowship with our
fellow dancers. We plan to play a little,
dance a little and have a lot of fun.
One of our clubs, Ramblers, will dance
throughout the summer. They will dance
on June 14, July 12 & 26, August 9 and
23. They dance at the Church of Christ
Family Life Center at 1900 West Rogers,
Skiatook. Come to Skiatook and dance
with this “fun bunch”.
June 26 will find most of us in OKC at
the 62nd Nationals, where we will reunite
with friends from across the land and
have as much fun and learn as much as
we can possibly absorb. When we get
tired of learning and dancing we will go
to the vendors and spend a little money.
We are looking forward to seeing you
there.
Congratulations are sent to one of our
favorite callers, Steve Estep and his
bride, Lori. Lori just walked into our
square dance family and found a comfortable spot. She is truly a delight and
we are glad to have her in our family.
Congratulations and best wishes to the
both of you.
The dancers of our district are so enthusiastic and friendly that we know this will
continue to be a great year for square
dancing and for SDAGC. We look forward to seeing each of you in a square
somewhere. We will be ever present at
many square dance functions, and at the
62nd Nationals, dancing and enjoying the
company of our square dance friends.
Remember we are only a S – M – I – L –
E away so come on over.

Just a few weeks and it will be time pack your suitcase and travel to

to greet you. There is a lot to do in a short time while in Oklahoma
City. There are two dances Tuesday before the convention begins.
Both dances begin at 7:30 pm and end at 10:00 pm. Contralab is
hosting a Free Trail End Dance on June 25, 2013 in Halls 9-10 of the
Cox Convention Center. Tony Oxendine and friends will host a

Tuesday. Route 66 begins in the morning and the Chickasaw Cultural Center tour begins in late afternoon.
Wednesdays Opening Ceremonies begin at 5 pm for a “Sooner
Welcome” in the northwest corner of Cox Convention Center.
After the opening it’s time for dinner and the show “Buddy and Beyond”. Tickets are needed for dinner and or show. There will be
free Round and Square Dancing after the show.

tours will begin before 10 am so check your tour schedule. Visit the Vendor area for your new outfit. Show Case
of Ideas opens. Attend several educational panels, clinics and seminars. Learn a new sewing trick in the Sew and

for surprise performances or sit back each evening in the Main Arena and watch these Exhibition Groups perform
when the Ghost Riders take a break. Dance to live music each evening from 8 pm to 10 pm in the Main Arena.
The Ghost Riders Square Dance Band has been a regular nightly feature for dozens of past conventions.
Friday morning begins with the “Bid Session”. This gives dancers a glimpse at what future cites have to offer if
they win the bid. Come see what Cincinnati, Ohio has to offer for the 2017 convention. More dancing, tours to
take, vendors and Show Case of Ideas to visit. Sewing, education panels, and seminars to attend. In the Main
Arena at 5:30 pm attend “Sooner Lagniappe” (a small gift given a customer (you) by a merchant (us) at the time of a
purchase; something given or obtained gratuitously or by way of good measure.) Arkansas’s Invitational Skit will be at
this time. Never been to Little Rock? Come see what Little Rock has to offer for the 63 rd National Square Dance
Convention®. President Bill Clintons Library is a must see. Back to dancing, all floors, all levels. Ghost Riders in
the main arena.
Saturday, last day. More dancing, tours, seminars, panels and education discussions. Vendors, Show Case of
Ideas. Main Arena is closed for Fashion Show practice and decorating. Plan to attend Catch your Dreams Fashion
Show. You’ll see fashions from around the country and very entertaining talent from Oklahoma. Last chance to
sit and rest before the final hours of dancing. Parade of States line up begins at 5 pm in the EAST hallway. The
parade begins at 5:30 pm and will travel into the Main Arena and everyone should find seats off the main floor.
Closing ceremonies, passing of the torch and the announcement of where the 66 th National Square Dance Convention® will be held. Then, back to dancing. At 9:00 pm in the main arena the winners of two quilts will be announced. Last night for the Ghost Riders band in the main arena. Contra dancers will dance to the live music of
“Shed House Band” Saturday evening.
Thanks for traveling to Oklahoma City. Hope you made plans to attend the 63 rd in Little Rock.

South Central District—Avery and Missy Fuller
Greetings to everyone
from South Central
District,
In the wake of the recent events I hope this
finds everybody safe
and in good health. The
month of May has truly
been an eventful month
and I first want to say
how much our hearts
here in South Central
District goes out to our
friends in Shawnee and
Moore. In my own
mind's eye I could not
imagine the devastation
and the fear that you all
went through and it
was only after we saw
the pictures that it
really hit home. Our
prayers go out to the
families who lost loved
ones, our hearts cry for
the children who went
to be with the Lord, but
we give praise that we
have the caliber of
teachers that so selfishly protected those
children.
On May 11th. South
Central District had its
spring Festival chaired
by Joan and David
Gutierrez and was truly
amazed at the turn out
that we had. With the
theme of "Remember
When" David and Joan
in conjunction with all
the clubs created a festival that was just like
walking down the
boardwalk at a carnival. We had cake
walks, bag sales, a couple of auctions and a
booth word you could
buy slightly used
square dance apparel.
Just like the barkers at
a carnival, the callers
of the SCD kept us entertained and busy as
we walked down
"Remember When"
Lane. It was said by
many this was the best
Festival that the SCD
has had for many many
years. I can personally
say this was the best
festival that we've had
in the last 6 years. I
want to thank all the
OSDF officers who
came to visit us as well
as our visitors from
Southern District,
Southwest District and
our Texas friends from
down in Wichita Falls.
Thank you all so much
for coming.

Panhandle District—Garrell and Lesa Young

But, the most exciting
part was the graduation exercises of a new

Ok. They call themselves the Alva Twisters and boy do they!
All eleven were dancing up a storm and
keeping up with us
OLD experienced
dancers.
I want to encourage
that new club to stay
traveling and dancing
and become a part of
the Northwest District.
So many advantages
are received when you
are part of the district.
That also makes you
part of the state and
capable of meeting and
dancing with so many
new friends at various
activities.
We also met and
danced with some
members of the other
new club in Northwest
district, The Harper
County Squares. Such
fun people! I hope we
can make their club
dance sometime soon.
Everyone, please
make a point to go

Which, if it were in a
bigger city, would
probably be designated
as a historic building

tons of family history
that they love to share
for the asking. You
would not be disappointed if you went.
We picnicked on the
grounds despite the
winds and approaching
storm. We danced in
the second story hay
barn with 5 to 6
squares on a great
wood floor from an old
gym. What great FUN!
