Assemble a shelving unit and peg rails
T
hese storage units are
adaptable and, because the
individual components
are already built, you can choose
combinations to suit your needs.
We used the Add-along four-shelf
starter unit, $60, bottle rack, $15,
pull-out box, $40, extra 770 x 400mm
shelves, $15 each, and additional
1100mm posts, about $8 for two. Use
a handsaw to cut the posts to size.
The timber can be left raw but,
if using a clear finish, stain or paint,
coat all pieces before assembly.

P
eg rails are a neat way of
keeping irregular-shaped items
and clothing out of the way.
Insert wall plugs before hanging the
rail and use a spirit level to check
that it’s straight. Install more than
one rail by using a timber offcut as
a spacer to align the holes.
Utilise wall space
by joining pine
peg rails, $5 each.
Hang a corkboard, $5,
using picture hooks.
Essential equipment
Trim posts with the Spear & Jackson
Predator Laser-guided Saw, $40.
Trojan No.1 x 100mm Phillips
head screwdriver by Prager,
about $12, gives a good grip.
Hang the peg rail straight using Stanley
Fat Max Xtreme spirit level, $60.
Measure up with the sturdy
Stanley Fat Max Xtreme 8m tape, $50.

Build the storage box
B
oxes are indispensable
for storing toys and sports
equipment, and the pine
storage boxes are designed to fit
within the frame of the wider unit,
so there’s no need for measuring
or cutting for assembly.
Castors slide the boxes into
place, while plastic storage boxes
can be bought to fit the shelves and
house smaller items for easy access.
To finish, leave the box raw or
apply clear finish, stain or paint after
assembly, before adding the castors.
Attach castors
to storage boxes
for easy access.
1 A power driver makes short work
of screwing the storage box together.
2 Use a small Phillips head
screwdriver to attach the castors.
