Demolition is Complete
Kountze Commons Happenings
by Paul Sum, Owner’s Representative for the property
Demolition of the KETV building is
complete. The building site is being
graded and prepared for the new
building foundation installation. Final
drawings and speci ications from
Holland Basham Architects have been
completed and released to Kiewit to
advertise and receive competitively
bid proposals from subcontractors.
Award of subcontractor work will
be completed and work will begin
shortly
New parking work along Farnam
St. in front of the church is scheduled
to begin next month. Additionally, the
Gingko tree in front of the church will
remain in place and the stone sign
will be relocated to a new location in
front of the church.
The Building Committee reviewed
an exterior light demonstration of
the main entrance to the church, bell
tower and lead glass windows above
the main church entrance with stateof-the art LED lighting which was
most impressive. We will be receiving
an alternate price to provide this
lighting to consider incorporating this
option to the church with the new
parking work along Farnam Street

Crucifer and Acolytes lead the
congregation to the groundbreaking site.
The Healing Gift Free Clinic and the
KMLC Pantry would like to thank the
Lozier Foundation for their generous
support. The Foundation has given
a $10,000 grant to the operating
expense of the Clinic and donated
shelving for both the pantry and
the Clinic. We are grateful for our
community partners!
Hundreds were on hand on
Sunday, June 19 as our congregation
broke ground on a new building that
will include space for a free medical
clinic, commons area, expanded
parking, and greenspace. The
ceremony began in the Sanctuary
with remarks by Rev. Dean Bard,
Interim Senior Pastor at Kountze
Memorial, who remarked, “Today, we
break ground and launch an historic
initiative in response to our Lord’s
call to serve people in need and

Heritage Series: Portraits of Jesus in the Gospels
Wednesdays in July, 6-7:30 PM
Led by Dulcinea Boesenberg
Questions? Contact Dulcinea at [email protected].
Dr. Dulcinea Boesenberg, Assistant
Professor of New Testament at
Creighton University and Kountze
member, will be teaching a class on
Wednesday evenings in July (July 6,
13, 20, and 27, 6:00-7:30 PM).
Have you ever wondered why
the New Testament canon contains
four Gospels, each of which tells the
story of Jesus in its own way? In
the early church, some Christians
favored a harmony of the Gospels
– one narrative that ironed out the
differences between Matthew, Mark,
Luke, and John. But this harmony of
the Gospels did not stand the test of
time. Rather, most early Christians
preferred having four different
accounts. Why would this be? In this
four-week class we will compare the
Gospel accounts and the theological
claims made in each. We will see
that four different accounts present
a much richer picture of who Jesus is
Ashley Ford Heading to Alaska
than one account could on its own.
We will begin with the portrayals of
Jesus in the cruci ixion narratives. In
subsequent weeks we will explore
how the evangelists portray Jesus in
relation to the Law of Moses, wealth
and poverty, and miracles.
All are welcome!
Pr. Hall’s course, using Frank Senn’s
Introduction to Christian Liturgy will
resume after Labor Day.
The world and all that is in it is the LORD’s. Psalm 24:1
I was raised with the understanding that we should love, cherish, and respect the world and everything it encompasses the
way the LORD would like for us to love and respect our own neighbors. Numbers 35:33 calls for not polluting our land with
blood. The amount of blood that has been spilled, whether it is animal or human, has caused an unsurmountable amount of
damage to the land. My passion is for the outdoors, a curious mind about how everything works, and to help those who have
no voice of their own.
I will be heading north to Alaska in August to attend the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau to earn my Bachelor’s
degree in Environmental Science. My career goal is to work as an environmental conservationist or as a conservation

minister to all people in
Christ’s name. By God’s
grace, we will dedicate
Kountze Commons, just
north of our church, in
less than a year.”
Many of our
partners in ministry
were present, including
representatives from
Lutheran Family
Services, Mosaic, and Dr.
Lindsey Northam from
Methodist Health System
who serves as medical
director for the new
Methodist Community Health Clinic.
Following opening remarks by
Bard and Northam, the congregation,
led by our acolytes, processed out
the front doors of the church, west
down Farnam St., and then north
to the construction site, where Rev.
H. Ashley Hall, led the blessing of
the ground, during which water
was sprinkled around the site and
on the congregation gathered in
remembrance of baptism. Then an
outline of a cross was marked by Rev.
Bard in the soil using the historic
gold processional cross as Rev. Hall
prayed “May we soon celebrate your
presence in this new building for your
church’s mission, dedicated now to
the service of all of your children,
especially the poorest and most needy,
for the greater glory of your name
and in obedience to our Lord Jesus
Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and forever. Amen.” Scripture
readings were taken
from Hebrews, chapter
11 and Nehemiah,
chapter 2.
Those who took
part in the ceremonial
ground breaking were
(pictured left to right):
Tim Holland, Paul
Sum, Terrie Larkowski,
Rev. Dean Bard, Dr.
Lindsey Northam, Josie
Abboud, Tarna Kidder,
Del Weber, Dr. Jerry
Fischer, Lynn Meyer,
Ian Hart ield, and Bob
Fonda.
ORDER OF SAINT JOHN TRAINING
FOR NEW ACOLYTES AND CRUCIFERS
Sunday, August 7, 12:00 PM or
Wednesday, August 10, 6:00 PM
Directly following the worship - in
the Sanctuary or Wednesday, August
10 at 6PM.
All youth (grades 8-12), either
currently serving or interested in
serving as an acolyte, should plan
to attend one special OSJ training in
August. The word “acolyte” means
“companion” or “one who helps.”
4
As a member of OSJ, youth serve
as companions to our pastors, by
carrying the cross and torches in
the processional, lighting candles
on the altar, and assisting with Holy
Communion. We will be training
new acolytes and reviewing crucifer
duties with current acolytes.

Church Council Notes
Tim Holland provided an update
on the building project in light of
new timing, logistics, and budget
constraints for the facility planned

changes have been approved by the
Kountze Endowment True Visions,
LLC. The Council moved, seconded,

Lozier Foundation. Such grants
usually portend an extensive
partnership, of which we are very
glad.
Joyce C. “JP” Palmer is being
considered for the new coordinator
of urban ministries position. Palmer
has a wealth of experience in the
business, fundraising, and church
works. A motion was made, seconded,

end of July.

If you or someone you know is ill,
hospitalized or would like a pastoral
visit, please be sure to let the church

biologist to help maintain and improve
our global ecosystems, habitats,
and terrestrial/ marine organism
populations. I will be able to use the
skills I have attained within my time
here to help work toward those goal.
I have developed lasting friendships
with the congregation and staff and my
time here has meant so much to me.
I have developed a wonderful
support system full of understanding,
compassion, and trust and will cherish
my memories of the great times I have
had here at Kountze. I will do my

If you are interested in becoming a member of our faith

The classes start with a light lunch at noon, following
the 11 AM worship service and last approximately 1.5-2

time with our pastors and staff learning more about
our congregation and Lutheran heritage. Childcare is
available (if needed).
All new members will be received into the
congregation on Sunday, September 25 at 9 AM, followed
by a special reception at Adult Forum in the Fellowship
Hall at 10 AM.
If you would like to attend, please call the church
of ice at 402-341-7761 or e-mail us at info@kmlchurch.
