The Messenger
We live in a world of clichés. Catch phrases we turn to when we
don’t have anything else to say in a difficult moment. Most are
pretty simple and easy to memorize. They’re catchy, so as to roll
easily off our tongues. Many sound downright “Christian.”
“Cleanliness is next to godliness…”
“God will only give you what you can handle…”
“Everything happens for a reason…”
These particular statements are pretty familiar to most of us…and
they all sound reasonable, right? But they can also unsettle us if
spoken or received at the wrong time.
We can find scripture to support these “truths.” But we can also
find scripture that seems to refute them.
What if these “spiritual declarations” are only “Kind of, Sort of…
True”? Join us in July and August as we examine these and other
statements and weigh their scriptural/theological validity.

If you’ve ever struggled to differentiate “good old American common sense” with “Gospel truth,” or felt unsettled by what others offer as “nuggets of spiritual wisdom,” we hope these sermons will
speak to your heart.
And while I know our summer schedules are all crazy busy, here’s
another “Kind of, Sort of Christian cliché” for you…”God doesn’t
take the summer off from His Church; we hope you won’t either.”
I’m looking forward to worshipping, fellowshipping, serving, and
spiritually growing with you often the rest of this summer!

Finance-Treasurer’s Report
We have had a very busy month at PUMC. A few update things to let you
know what is going on: The mission Trip team brunch was a success as they raised
$436.00 toward their trip and received another $155.00 donation toward Chaddock.
There was also a donation of $180.00 for the trip. Thanks to all that ate and gave
to this event.
The mission team met and advised me to pay what could be paid from their budget items. I paid all but
one item and the three general offering amounts withheld for later this year. That budget is almost complete for the year. We did give $200.00 toward African University Scholarships and $300.00 to Wiley
College from the Annual Conference special initiative this year. This brings our African University Scholarship fund giving to $6580.00. Well done PUMC.
The Pig Roast did very well and raised a little over $1700.00 profit which will go toward the youth, general fund, and Dunlap missions.
Our financial picture looks pretty good at this time, but we have now hired a Youth Ministry person,
Evan Penn, and that will be an additional expense every month. This is a very much needed position
here at Prospect and we are excited to have him on board.
I read this quote this past week and wanted to pass it on. "He who labors as he prays, lifts his heart to
God with his hands." St. Benedict of Mirsia. We have been busy doing God's work so I know we have
lifted our hands and hearts to God while doing his work. Have a Great Summer and keep cool.-God
Bless, Bonnie Mankle, Treasurer

Book Discussion:
Plan to join us at 6:30 p.m. in the lounge to discuss these books.
Thursday, July 21: The novel The Girl in the Blue Beret by Bobbie Ann Mason is based on the
experiences of her father-in-law, who was shot down in Belgium in WWII and cared for by the people who
lived there.
Thursday, September 22: In The Weight of Mercy: A Novice Pastor on the City Streets , former
journalist Deb Richardson-Moore later in life answers a call to ministry and works as a Baptist pastor in
Greenville, SC, ministering to people who are homeless.
Thursday, November 17: In Just Mercy—a Story of Justice and Redemption, Bryan Stevenson writes
of his experiences as a young lawyer working with a man sentenced to die for a murder he did not commit and then founding the Equal Justice initiative, dedicated to defending those most desperately in need.
Questions? Suggestions for books to discuss? Contact Nancy Varness at 2774-8124 or [email protected].
RED CROSS Platelet Drive at PUMC:
PUMC is partnering with the Red Cross to bring a Mobile Apheresis Program to the Fellowship Hall on a
monthly basis. Platelet donations are in high demand as they only have a lifespan of 5 days. If you are a regular blood donor, you can continue to donate whole blood and, in between your 56 days, donate Platelet
Apheresis.
Our next drive will be on Monday, July 25 and August 22..To make an appointment you can contact Dani in
the office or contact our Red Cross coordinator, Kristy, directly at 636-4398. If you would like more information on platelet
donation, please feel free to contact the office for additional brochures. Please make your appointment soon! Every person
makes a difference!
Highway Clean-up Needs your Help!!!
PUMC is responsible for cleaning Cedar Hills Dr. From Knoxville/Rt. 40 to Bland
Rd. We need 6-10 people meeting in the Banner School parking lot at 9:00
a.m. for approximately 1 hour (usually the last Saturday of the month). If there is a
Sunday School class or family that would like to do it as a group but at a different
time/day, that is great -- just get in touch with Lois Yoches (243-5062). The county supplies the neon,
reflective vests and trash bags; each person should bring working gloves and sturdy shoes. The cleanup
works best if one person stays on the top portion of the ditch and one covers the lower part so no one has
to walk up and down the steep ditch.
Dates for the season are:
July 30, August 27, September 24, October 22

Prospect Photo Directory
Have you noticed that it has been more than 7 years since Prospect had a new church photo directory? Have you noticed new faces in the sanctuary on Sunday mornings, but don’t really
know these new members/friends of the church? Have you noticed that kids who were toddlers
in their last church directory photo are now in high school?
We have good news! A new church directory is scheduled for delivery this fall…but we need to
have YOUR family pictures included to make it complete!!!
Prospect’s photography dates are Thur., August 11 (2-9 pm), Fri., August 12 (2-9 pm) and Sat.,
August 13 (9:30-4:00 pm). All scheduling will be done online through a link on our church website (www.pumcdunlap.org). You may access the site yourself, or (if you are a bit computer
wary) contact the church office so we can help. A sign-up sheet will also be available on Sundays in the Gathering Area and in the office during the week. You should expect to receive an
automated “kick-off call” within the next week, along with follow-up reminder calls in July.
ALL PROSPECT MEMBERS AND “FRIENDS” are invited to participate by having their pictures included in the directory. The 2016 Prospect Photo Directory will “updatable” annually as
we receive new members. Prospect will also receive a PDF version of the new directory.
If you have an elderly neighbor or family member, consider scheduling back-to-back appointments and offer them a ride!
No family photo is complete without every member present in the picture…and our church directory won’t be complete without YOU! Sign up today!

Mission Trip Brunch: Thank You
Praise God for a supportive, generous church family. The Chaddock Mission Team purchased and prepared a delicious brunch for June 12th.
Many in worship that Sunday took time to eat and fellowship, Your generosity encouraged the volunteers to leave the routine of home to share
their time and talents at Chaddock Children’s Home. Our efforts to help
there encourage their staff and demonstrate God’s love to all on campus. It is good to bless one another. Thank you!
SCHOOL SUPPLIES COLLECTION
Backpacks will be starting up sooner than we think and again PUMC will be collecting supplies. Below is a list of the school supply list. We will once again be donating to Dunlap
Grade School. We will be collecting school supplies in the gathering space starting July
17th and the missions team is asked to help sort items and stuff backpacks after service
on August 7th. We will look to have separate totes for each supply like last year.
Thank you all in advance for all your help and donations!
Below is a list of supplies we are collecting:
*Regular Sized Book Bags (no wheels) *Clorox Wipes
*Hand Sanitizer with a pump
*Small Scissors (blunt end) *Spiral Notebooks (wide ruled)
*4 oz. Elmer’s Glue (White only)
*24 count boxes of Crayola Crayons (brilliant colors)
*Plain two pocket folders with clasps (no plastic)
*Large box of Kleenex
*Plain yellow #2 pencils (already sharpened)
*Large erasers *Yellow highlighters
*Box of 8 washable markers

Wilder -Waite has asked for donated Wal-Mart gift cards for students who need a change of clothes or
clothing items. Unfortunately this has become a great need and usually teachers go and buy clothing items
with their own personal money. If you are willing to get a Wal-Mart gift card or give money for this you
can give to Corey Campbell or drop off in the office. Thank you!

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL WRAP-UP!
VBS is in the books! We had close to 60 children attend! Thanks to the 44 adults and
teens who volunteered each day - we couldn't have done it without you. Thanks, also, to
those who came in and helped decorate, to those that brought in food for snack, and to
everyone who donated financially or brought in supplies for us to use.
Our missional opportunity for the week was the South Side Mission kid’s camp. We
raised $178, and Thursday afternoon after VBS, 33 children and adults spent a couple
hours down at SSM playing games and making crafts with the campers. It was a
GREAT afternoon, in the midst of a great week!

Music News:
Interested in getting involved with music? Kirsten is still looking for summer special music performers! So far we have heard from many talented people of our church, the Bevill boys,
Gabe Jones, Pat Messenger, Jerry Orrison, the VBS kids, Ginger Brattain, etc. Thank you to
all those who have volunteered their time and energies! Please call Kirsten if interested in helping during July or
August. The schedule is wide open! 309-361-5200. Also, looking ahead towards the fall, please consider if you
would be willing to sing with the choir. We are always looking for fresh faces, but are especially in need of sopranos. Our first practice will be Wednesday, September 7th from 7-8pm. Childcare can be provided if we have parents interested in participating. Happy summer!

The Youth & Teen Messenger
YOUTH NEWS:
We have exciting news!!!
This past Sunday, our Staff-Parish Relations Committee voted to hire Evan
Penn as our Director of Youth Ministries at Prospect!
Prospect has entered into a partnership with Central Illinois Young Life whereby Evan will be formally hired as a full-time staff member with Young Life. Prospect will pay half of Evan’s salary and benefits package. Evan will then split his time between leading
our congregational ministry to middle school and high school youth and Young Life’s Dunlap area outreach ministry.
Evan grew up in Washington, IL where he attended both Crossroads UMC and the Washington chapter of
Young Life. Evan is a recent (May 7th) graduate of Lincoln Christian University. He majored in Communications, was a dorm Resident Assistant and served several youth ministry internships during his college
years. His hobbies include running (he ran his first marathon last year), guitar and drum playing, photography and sound/video production.
Evan’s official start date is Monday, July 11th but he will begin leading a Sunday morning Bible study
with our youth (immediately after worship) this coming Sunday (June 26th).
We know that Evan is going to be a tremendous blessing to our middle school
and high school students (and their families).
We also look forward to welcoming Evan into the larger Prospect family!
From Evan: “I'm excited to join Prospect UMC and further the work of Jesus in
Dunlap! I hope to help guide teens into a relationship with Christ if they do
not have one, and to deepen their walk and understanding of Scripture.”
Evan also plans to a youth (6th-12th grade) Bible study Sundays after worship
beginning June 26th.

Children’s Ministry
Summer Kingdom Quest
Kingdom Quest is in need of summer teachers! KQ is meeting during
the second half of the service each Sunday morning, with children
leaving the service after the children’s message. Please consider volunteering for a couple weeks to give our regular teachers a break.
Curriculum will be provided. Please contact Beth at 360-6583, or by
email [email protected], or call Dani in the church office.
The Children’s Ministry Team Needs YOU
Do you have a heart for the youngest members at Prospect? Do you like to have fun while helping children grow in their faith? There’s a place for you – the Children’s Ministry team! With our
increase in families and the number of children attending each week (YAY!!) the need has become greater to have more voices in the planning of events and hands in the carrying out of
those events. We typically meet once a month before church (the time is negotiable). This is a fun, rewarding way to serve
not only Prospect, but the Kingdom itself! Please contact Beth (360-6583) if you have questions or to sign up.
PUMC POOL PARTY!
Everyone is invited to a PUMC Pool Party! Come out and join the
fun on Sunday, August 7, from 6-8 p.m. at the pool in Princeville. Children, youth, and adults of ALL ages are invited! Can’t
wait to see you out there!
Children’s Ministry Fall KiCKoFF Party
Stay tuned, kids, for a Fall Kickoff Party! Plans are still in the works,
but be watching for details in the coming month. The Children’s Education team is preparing a fun afternoon for you to celebrate the end of
summer and the beginning of another fantastic school/church year!
PURPLE PANDA/PASC NEWS
Purple Panda Preschool is spending the summer making preparations for the next school year.
We are excited to announce we have hired a new teacher for our three year old preschool class,
Paul Deenik! Paul has been a first and second grade teacher in Michigan and also holds a Master’s Degree in Administration from the University of Michigan. He is also a member of PUMC. He
and Suhair Awad will make a great team in our three year old classroom. Jamie Hafele and I will
continue in our teaching roles in the Pre-K classroom next year. We do still have a few openings
for 2016-17, in both our two and three day 3 year old classes and one more opening in Pre-K as
of this writing. We are also busy making plans for some wonderful changes in our After Care
classroom downstairs by adding new equipment and activities and reconfiguring the after care
classroom set up and decorations. If you have any questions or are
interested in enrollment in preschool or after care please contact me
through Dani in the Church office at 243-7300 or e-mail me at [email protected]. -Nikki Pollard-Director, Purple Panda Preschool
