Pets of the Week
We would like to thank Hometown Marketplace for allowing us this weekly space which has helped many cats
and dogs find their way home --- either lost pets going
home to their people or ones needing to be rehomed
getting help in finding their ‘forever home.’ The continuing support with regard to events and fundraisers is yet
another way Hometown Marketplace is helping with Safe
Haven’s mission.
The Pet of the Week this week is actually a litter of seven
puppies. They are healthy, happy, and ready for their new
homes. The lucky families who adopt one of these lively
little pups can celebrate their furry friend’s birthday on March 20 of each
year. Pictured are three of the busy little guys/gals. The puppies are mixed
breed. We have a picture of the mother to help in estimating the adult size of the puppies. She is a medium
sized short hair dog and we have been told there is some heeler in her ancestry. Two of the puppies are tricolor while the other seven are black with a bit of white here or there.

Retiring Old Glory
When Adam and I decided to put up a flag pole, I was really excited.
There’s something special about driving through a small town and seeing
home after home flying old glory proudly from the front porch or from flag
poles affixed in their yards. I would like to take a moment and say, “Thank
you,” to those that choose to proudly display your patriotism toward our
great nation. It takes time, effort and monetary dedication to flying an
American Flag properly.
Since I began this position, occasionally I will have someone ask me
about when to dispose of their flag and how to properly dispose of their
flag. The answer for when is pretty cut and dry. When the flag begins to
fade in color and tatter from exposure to the elements. At that time most
people will decide to replace their flag.
As for how the flag can be properly disposed of, there are a few options
that I know of and found online on the boy scouts magazine.
Option 1: Get help in your community. Many units start the flag retirement process by contacting a local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) post,
Elks Lodge, American Legion post or similar group. Your pack, troop or crew
could conduct a small service project in exchange for the group’s helping to
retire your flag. Last year the Cub Scout Pack 229 assisted the American
Legion Post 76 with their flag burning ceremony. It’s a great opportunity to
get civic groups involved and to teach local youth about the history of the
flag as well as proper etiquette for disposal of the American Flag.
Option 2: Burn the flag to retire it. A popular way to retire a worn-out
American Flag is by burning it. Page 76 of the BSA Handbook says, “A
national flag that is worn beyond repair may be burned in a fire. The ceremony should be conducted with dignity and respect and the flag burned
completely to ashes.”
PRO: Method preferred by U.S. Flag Code and BSA Handbook. Usually
the most ceremonial and solemn method.
CON: Worst option for the environment. Unlike the cotton and wool flags
made in the early 20th century, today’s flags are made out of petroleumbased materials like nylon. Burning nylon is different from burning cotton
or wool and can create hazardous gas.
Option 3: Recycle the flag yourself. At the retirement ceremony, you can
cut up your flag using an approved technique that doesn’t cut through the
blue star field. When a flag has been cut up, it is no longer officially a flag.
Here is one method:
1. Stretch out the corners of the flag.
2. Cut the flag in half, vertically — do not cut into the blue star field.
3. Place the two halves together and cut in half, horizontally.
4. You will have four pieces of flag, one being the blue star field and the
other three red and white stripes.
5. Put the flag in a container and dispose of it properly.
Here’s another similar approach.
Option 4: Pay a company to recycle the flag. Do a Google search to find
flag recycling groups. Some offer the service for free, while others request a
small donation for time spent and resources used. The materials from your
unit’s worn-out flag will be used to make a new flag for future generations
of Americans to enjoy.
You could still hold a flag-retirement ceremony in which you fold up the
flag to prepare to ship it to the recycler.
However you choose to dispose of your flag, please do so respectfully.
Another reminder, please remember that flags are to be flown from sunrise
to sunset. If you choose to display your flag all night (which we do at my
house, as well as most people choose to do), just remember that you’re
supposed to have the flag properly illuminated. The solar powered flag pole
lights are a fantastic, as well as reasonably priced, option for night time
flag display.
