ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM
Since 1949, the Florida Artist Group has held a symposium and a
members' exhibition each year in a different Florida city. Its educao
tional and other cultural aims are advocated at these meetings through
lectures, panel discussions, films and exhibits.
In addition to the Symposium and Exhibition held in the Spring, Area
exhibitions and meetings are sponsored at other times in various
places in the state. The nature of these meetings follows, in a small
way, the character of the Spring meeting. They also serve to bring the
members of the organization more closely together.
JURIED SHOWS
To insure an annual exhibition of exceptional quality, the show is
juried. The organization always brings in an eminent juror from out-ofstate who is prominently associated with art administration, education
or a painter or sculptor of national repute. Past locations of Exhibitions
have included the Norton Gallery, Ringling Museum, Cummer Gallery
of Art, the Jacksonville Art Museum, Miami Metropolitan Museum and
the Lowe Museum, University of South Florida, University of Florida,
Rollins College, Daytona Museum of Arts and Sciences and many
other outstanding galleries.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
The 34th Annual Exhibition reflects the purpose for which we were
organized. Appreciation must be extended to many who have made
this exhibit possible; to our founders with their great vision; to all past
and present Directors who have kept the organization vibrantly alive
with their dedicated volunteer efforts; to the members for their creative work and to our eminent juror, Richard Anuszkiewicz.
Our thanks to Ridge Art Association, the City of Winter Haven and
Foster Harmon Galleries of American Art for their invitations and
housing of the exhibit.
We wish to thank all of our faithful sponsors of awards and welcome
three new ones this year, namely, Barnett Banks of Florida, Katherine
Rowland and Gertrude Freeman. We welcome back Southeast Banks
of Florida who have so generously supported our group activities so
many different years in the past.
The cultural needs of the communities through the visual arts have

We are privileged to have as juror for our 34th Annual Exhibition the
renown artist, Mr. Richard AnuszkiewicZ.
Mr. Anuszkiewicz's credentials are extensive. He received a BFA
from Cleveland Institute of Art and a MFA from Yale University. A few
of the collections in which his work is found are the Corcoran Gallery,
Fogg Art Museum, Hirshhorn Museum, Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of Art and Philadelphia Museum of Art. Some of his most
recent solo exhibitions are the Brooklyn Museum and Carnegie Institute, 1980; University of Fine Arts Galleries, Tallahassee and Museum
of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, 1981.

JUROR'S STATEMENT
The first thing I look for, of course, is quality. That is the primary
number-one factor. Second, for this show, I want to have it represent
as wide a range of styles as possible; but if one style should dominate
with bette r work, I would have more of that style, because my numberone priority is quality. After that I would look for variety so that you
would have a well-rounded show- but I would not have the variety if
the quality were not there.
Third, I dislike very much something that is derivative from another
artist's work, and I prefer to have something - even something that is
very primitive, if it is honest - to something that is competent but
derivative f rom another person's work, because that is the opposite
end of what creativity is all about.
I am especially critical of work that might be close to mine, or in my
area of work. I am ultra-critical because of the standards I set for myself. I fee l that if someone should t ry to do something for the show
similar to what I do, then I would be ultra-c ritical of that work.
And that's it: first, quality; second , diversity; and third, honesty in
the c reativity.
