MAIN GEOGRAPHICAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Carinthia is a region located in the south of Austria. It
covers an area of 9,536 km2 with 559,404 inhabitants.
It consists mostly of a basin inside the Alps with the
Carnian Alps and the Karawanken making up the border
to Italy and Slovenia. The Tauern Mountain divides it
from Salzburg. To the east lies the state of Styria, which
makes up a continuous valley with the eastern part of the
Tyrol to the West. Its lakes are a major tourist attraction.
The main river is the Drave. The capital is Klagenfurt.
The next important town is Villach. These two towns
are strongly linked economically. The people are predominantly German speaking with a unique (and easily
recognizable) dialect.
A Slovenian minority of about 14,000 people is concentrated in the south east of the region. The state
is divided into 8 districts (Bezirke), and 2 chartered
towns – Klagenfurt and Villach. The districts are: Spit-
tal on Drave, Hermagor, Villach-Land, Feldkirchen,
St. Veit an der Glan, Klagenfurt-Land, Völkermarkt,
Wolfsberg.
TOURISM OFFER
The variety of tourism attractions is one of the main
strengths of Carinthia. Beautiful landscapes and attractive theme programmes offer unique tourism experiences all year round.
Cultural events such as festivals on the Lake Wörther,
nature active outdoor programmes “Carinthia, water.
realm”, wellness programmes, family holidays, sport
activities such as hiking, walking, riding, cycling, golf,
make the region an ideal destination for all target groups
all year round.

Especially exciting active and sport holidays are guaranteed by numerous attractions as long distance cycling
trails and several associations and specialized sport
schools offering outdoor activities and courses in the
Alps and on the Lakes. Thanks to its well-equipped
modern winter resorts and snow facilities, Carinthia is
a trendy international destination for winter holidays.

Castile and León is one of the 17 autonomous communities that territorially comprise Spain. With its 94,225
km 2 and a population of 2,557,330 inhabitants, it has
more land surface than any other community in Spain.
It is divided into nine provinces whose main cities are
Valladolid, Burgos, Palencia, Soria, León, Zamora, Ávila,
Segovia and Salamanca. The latter three have been
declared World Heritage Cities.
Most of the provinces consist not only of plains but also
mountains and wide rivers. The main river of Castile and
León is the Duero running through the community from east
to west and continuing on to Portugal. Castile and León is
famous for its cultural heritage as well as its wine and culinary arts. There is a high density in cultural heritage, 1,820
declared cultural properties up to the year 2010 and the
largest number of UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Castile and León offers its visitors: art and culture, lively
historic cities, events, nature and relaxation, spiritual experiences and pilgrimage.
Tourist attractions include the Atapuerca archaeological site with records of the first settlers in Europe and
the Gothic Cathedral of Burgos. One of the world’s most
important pilgrim route, the Path of Saint James, also runs
through the region. Many Romanesque churches can be
found in small villages along the pilgrimage route. To admire nature, any of the nearly 40 protected natural spaces,
e.g. the Picos de Europa National Park with its Atlantic
forest, is worth a visit.
Many activities like climbing, cycle touring or kayaking
make the stay in Castile and León even more enjoyable.
But the area also has a lot to offer, even just for a relaxing stroll: Las Médulas, the largest open-air golden mine
8
Frómista
excavated during the period of the Roman Empire has also
been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
When it comes to relaxing, several spas with natural
spring waters allow tourists to rest and recuperate in firstclass scenic and cultural establishments.
Castile and León’s gastronomy varies from traditional
recipes to nouvelle cuisine. Typical dishes such as roast
milk-fed lamb, black sausage, “botillo” (stuffed cured meat)
or roast suckling pig are served with first-rate wines such
as those from the Ribera de Duero region.

The Piedmont region has an area of 25,402 square kilometres and a population of about 4.4 million inhabitants.
The name Piedmont comes from medieval Latin Pedemontium or Pedemontis, i. e. “ad pedem montium”, meaning
“at the foot of the mountains”. Piedmont is surrounded on
three sides by the Alps, including Monviso, where the Po
rises, and Monte Rosa. It borders with France, Switzerland
and the Italian regions of Lombardy, Liguria, Aosta Valley
and for a very small fragment with Emilia Romagna. The
geography of Piedmont is mainly mountainous, along with
extensive areas of hills and plains. Piedmont is the second
largest of Italy’s 20 regions, after Sicily. It is broadly contiguous with the upper part of the drainage basin of Italy’s
largest river, the Po, which rises from the slopes of Monviso
in the west of the region. Agriculture is very important, the
main products being rice, wine, maize, potatoes and the
precious white truffle.
The 15 Residenze Reali (Royal Residences), ascribed to
UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites in 1997, are perfect
highlights of art, culture and countryside and they are an
artistic and cultural treasure, not only for the region, but also
for the whole of Europe. An alternative way to visit a region is
to follow a medieval pilgrim route: Piedmont, with its doors
always open to Europe, offers this opportunity with its numerous ancient abbeys, churches and with the seven Sacri
Monti, which were also included in the UNESCO list in 2003.
The cultural heritage is made up of residences, historical
gardens, castles, fortresses and over 400 museums, ranging from civic, public and ethnographic to eco-museums.
All these can ensure a striking and complete package for
art lovers; these can range from natural science to cinema,
and from decorative art to anthropology, along with exhibition centres, with displays which range from archaeology
to contemporary art.
Vezzolano
With its 160,000 hectares of protected land, Piedmont
provides the opportunity to discover unique countryside
and typical habitats of alpine areas, of hills and plains.
Piedmont is home to two national parks: the Gran Paradiso and the Val Grande. The north-east of the region
is occupied by the well-known Lago Maggiore and the
Lago d’Orta.
When it comes to gastronomy, Piedmont offers fine
Italian cuisine and regales guests with its very own wine:
the Barolo. Eleven places of origin of grapes suitable for
making of Barolo DOCG (Protected Designation of Origin)
have been included in the package. This route also reflects
another highlight of Piedmont – picturesque historical
villages. Indicated as “Italy’s Loveliest Villages”, Bergolo
with its well-renovated stone houses and panoramic position is one example of these charming communities.
Past and future, art and the culture of food, handicrafts
and research are all established in a region with a powerful
productive impulse: an area which is both at the cutting edge
of innovation and new technology and characterised by extraordinary natural richness. Here, the cultural opportunities
go hand in hand with the array of free-time activities.

Saxony-Anhalt is one of the 16 federal states (Bundesländer) of Federal Republic of Germany. It has an
area of 20,446 km 2 and a population of 2.4 million. Its
capital is Magdeburg, which is situated in the centre
of the state.
Saxony-Anhalt borders on the states of Lower Saxony
to the north-west, Brandenburg to the east, Saxony to the
south-east and Thuringia to the south-west.
The State is divided into 11 rural districts and 3 independent cities: Halle, Dessau and Magdeburg.
Most of the state consists of plains and is therefore
primarily agricultural. In the south west, the eastern part
of the Harz Mountains is famous for its vines and wines.
The main river of Saxony-Anhalt is the Elbe running about
300 kilometres through the state from south east to north
west. The second largest river, the Saale, is a tributary
of the Elbe.
Saxony-Anhalt offers its visitors a wide variety of memorable attractions: art and culture, lively historic cities,
events, nature and relaxation.
With its 1,000 km long Romanesque Road full of
fascinating medieval monuments such as cathedrals,
churches, castles, palaces and palatinates from Arendsee in the North to Zeitz in the South, scenic and historically important parklands and landscaped gardens
known as “Garden Dreams”, UNESCO World Heritage
sites, memorial places of great personalities like Martin
Luther, Otto the Great, Bach and Handel, music events
and festivals, Saxony-Anhalt is a perfect holiday destination for culture and art lovers, educational travellers
as well as all tourists in search of peaceful relaxation.
Thanks to its rivers, natural lakes and growing lake
landscapes, Saxony-Anhalt is also a destination of water

Serbia is located in the centre of the Balkan Peninsula, in
south-eastern Europe. The northern portion belongs to central Europe, but in terms of geography and climate it is also
partly a Mediterranean country. Serbia is landlocked but as a
Danube country it is connected to distant seas and oceans.
The Danube River flows through Serbia, covering 588 km
of its total 2,783 km long course. Serbia is mountainous
country, very rich in rivers and lakes.
Serbia is a crossroads of Europe and a geopolitically
important territory. The international roads and railway lines,
which run through the country’s river valleys, form the shortest link between Western Europe and the Middle East.
Serbia has an area of 88,361 km2 and a population of
more than 1,730,000 inhabitants. The capital city is Belgrade and along with it there are the main cities of Novi Sad,
Kragujevac and Nis. There are two autonomous regions in
Serbia: Autonomous Province of Vojvodina and Autonomous
Province of Kosovo and Metohija, which are under the interim civilian and military administration of the UN.
TOURISM OFFER
Serbia is a country of contrast, offering its visitors a
diversity of highlights, including wildlife, events, entertainment, clubbing and shopping.
Serbia’s cultural identity is rooted in its people. Some
of them have become world renowned – Mileva Marić Einstein, Nikola Tesla, Milutin Milanković , Mihajlo Pupin.
The festivals of classical and avant-garde theatre offer
visitors an exciting cultural experience, often staged in
the open air or within the walls of fortresses. Testimonies
of different cultures throughout the ages are reminders of

MAIN GEOGRAPHICAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Slovenia is a coastal Alpine country in southern central
Europe bordering Italy to the west, the Adriatic to the
southwest, Croatia to the south and east, Hungary to
the northeast and Austria to the north. Slovenia covers
an area of 20,273 km2 with 1,967,000 inhabitants. The
capital is Ljubljana.
Throughout Slovenia‘s history, the country has been
part of: the Roman Empire, the Duchy of Carantania,
the holy Roman Empire, Austria-Hungary, the State of
Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, the Kingdom of Serbs,
Croats and Slovenes between the World Wars and the
State of Yugoslavia from 1945 until gaining independence
in 1991. Slovenia became a member of the European
Union on 1 May 2004.
Slovenia is divided into 205 municipalities (občine,
singular - občina), of which 11 have urban status.
Slovenia‘s main ethnic group is Slovenians (83%), further
nationalities are from Ex-Yugoslavia, Hungary and Italy.
The official language is Slovenian, which is a member
of the South Slavic language group; Hungarian and Italian enjoy the status of official languages in the ethnically
mixed regions along the Hungarian and Italian border.
By religion, Slovenians have traditionally been largely
Roman Catholic.
Four major European geographic regions meet in
Slovenia: the Alps, the Dinarides, the Pannonian plain,
and the Mediterrranean. Around one half of the country
(10,124 km2) is covered in forests, this makes Slovenia the
third most forested country in Europe after Finland and
Sweden, while remnants of primeval forests are still to be
found, the largest in the Kocevje area. Grassland covers
5,593 km2 of the country and fields and gardens 2,471 km2.
20
Lasko
There are also 363 km2 of orchards and 216 km2 of vineyards. Its climate is Submediterranean on the coast, Alpine
in the mountains and continental with mild to hot summers
and cold winters in the plateaus and valleys to the east.
TOURISM OFFER
As a crossroad of different cultural and ethnic influences
as well as climate areas extending from the Adriatic
coast to the Alps, Slovenia offers a wide range of attractive tourism products for active nature, culture, spa
and wellness, food and wine holidays.
Thanks to its wonderful ski resorts with cross country
slopes, skiing schools, hiking, cycling and riding trails,
hunting and fishing areas, sea activities as sailing, surfing,
diving, river sports like kayaks, canyoning and rafting, air
sports, golf courses, Slovenia guarantees pleasurable
active holidays all year round.
Its certified natural health and thermal resorts with
healing properties of the mineral water, for centuries appreciated all over Europe, make Slovenia an ideal destination for spa and wellness holidays.
Food and wine lovers will be surprised by a variety of
dishes and excellent local wines offered along the wine
routes or in the numerous traditional gostilnas.
In the major European festival cities like Ljubljana and
Maribor, as well as in the rest of the country, visitors can
experience a unique cultural atmosphere through internationally well-known and other minor events.

MAIN GEOGRAPHICAL
CHARACTERISTICS
The Tâmega and Sousa consists of 12 municipalities:
Amarante, Baião, Castelo de Paiva, Celorico de Basto,
Cinfães, Felgueiras, Lousada, Marco de Canaveses,
Paços de Ferreira, Paredes, Penafiel and Resende.
With an area of 1,988 km2, accounting for 9.3% of the
North region, the Tâmega and Sousa is a heterogeneous
domain, the transition between the Metropolitan Area of
Porto and the interior of the North region. Here resides a
population of about 527,000 inhabitants (2006). One thing
worth noting is the high percentage of the young people,
almost 19% of the population, higher than the national
average (15.5%), together with demographic ageing much
lower than the one in the remaining areas of the North
and Mainland.
This region has been shaped by its physical and geographical characteristics, giving it its particular Mediterranean climate and cultural heritage. With mild winters and
not too intense summers, it is ideal for a holiday at any
time of year. The highest areas of the region, such as the
sierras of Aboboreira, Alvão, Marão and Montemuro, are
covered, in the harshest winters, with beautiful mantles of
snow. The rainy season is relatively short, between November and January, and as showers are not too frequent,
outdoor activities can still go ahead unhampered.
TOURISM OFFER
In the land of the valleys of Tâmega and Sousa, in the
heart of the North of Portugal, stands an important
architectural heritage of Romanesque origin. Common
traits that carry legends and stories born with the foundation of the Nationality and which witness the significant role that this territory formerly played in the history

of the nobility and religious orders in Portugal. On a
voyage through history, the Route of the Romanesque
also offers moments of contemplation to its visitors and
invites them to contact the peoples of the region.
Trails and paths await you for walking or cycling, in
perfect communion with nature. And the river Paiva challenges the boldest of tourists with unique experiences
with unforgettable rafting slides. Numerous festivities and
pilgrimages are the privileged stage for a re- enactment
of the old markets, brought alive by the unique forms of
dancing, playing and singing. The region also has its own
traditional arts and crafts, particularly embroidery, linen
work, and the restoration of artwork and woodcarving.
Savour the tastes and aromas of traditional cuisine,
always served with excellent quality green wine grown
in these lands. Tourists can recover their strength in the
quietness that surrounds the rural tourism units in the
region or go for a walk in the centenary gardens, where
time seems to have stood still. Wherever they go, they
will be welcomed with the courtesy and authenticity of
the local population.
The Tourist Information Centres of the Route of the
Romanesque are welcoming and support spaces for visitors and tourists, where they can access interactive and
educational information on the Route of the Romanesque
and the territory of Tâmega and Sousa. The Route of
the Romanesque, like its main access points, is properly
signposted throughout the region.

The free state of Thuringia lies in central Germany and
is among the smallest of the country’s sixteen Bundeslaender (federal states) being eleventh in size with
an area of 16,171.5 km2 and twelfth most populous with
2,373,157 inhabitants. The capital is Erfurt.
Thuringia borders on (from the North and clockwise)
the German states of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt,
Saxony, Bavaria and Hesse.
The most conspicuous geographical feature of Thuringia
is the Thuringian Forest, a mountain chain in the southwest. The north-west Thuringia includes a small part of the
Harz Mountains. The eastern part of Thuringia is generally
a plain. The Saale river runs through these lowlands from
south to north. Thuringia is divided into seventeen districts
(Landkreise). Beside the capital Erfurt, other important cities of Thuringia, according to the number of its inhabitants,
are Gera, Jena, Weimar and Gotha.
The region’s unique tourist attractions, dramatic scenery, excellent cuisine and friendly hospitality are guaranteed to provide the ideal German holiday. You would
be hard-pushed to find another region in Germany that
offers so many impressive cultural venues in such a
compact area as Thuringia.
The cities and towns of Thuringia are filled with an
array of cultural sights and will delight visitors with their
well preserved centres, architectural jewels and exciting
events.
Anyone planning to follow the tracks of famous people,
such as the composer Bach or the reformer Luther or to
look for UNESCO World Heritage sites, Thuringia is the
perfect travel destination.
The region also offers amazing landscapes and an
abundance of outdoor activities, such as hiking, cycling,
skiing, canoeing and much more. Here, traditional art also

3 days to learn how Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena
DOP and Parmesan cheese are made and can be used: Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena matures in the quietness
of acetaie, thanks to the peculiar technique of travasi and
many years of ageing. The Balsamico is obtained from the
cooked grape that has to mature in a slow process derived
from natural fermentation and progressive concentration in
barrels of different woods, without adding any extra ingredients. Parmigiano-Reggiano is never manufactured, always
hand-made, today, as it was eight centuries ago, with essential
and genuine ingredients: high quality milk from the local area
of production, fire, rennet, with good old methods, with the art
and knowledge of the cheese maker. Then it ages naturally for
two years or more. This also involves work, since wheels need
to be cleaned and rotated, checked and kept day by day, so
that they can reach the high quality standards.
The price includes
2 nights with accommodation in double room in 3/4*-hotel in
Modena or surroundings.

Highlights: Monastery Žiča – Monastery Studenica
Monastery Žiča - visit
» Žiča monastery (founded by the Serbian King Stefan “the
First-Crowned” at the beginning of the 13th century) is of
great historical importance. The Church of the Ascension
served as the first seat of the independent Serbian Archbishopric and played a very important role in the religious,
political and cultural life of mediaeval Serbia. In its basic
features, the architecture of Žiča, which has undergone
considerable changes, belongs to the oldest school of Serbian medieval architecture. The interior fresco decoration
dates from various periods.
Monastery Studenica – visit and lunch
» Studenica monastery (founded by Stefan Nemanja, who
took monastic orders there choosing the name Simeon) is
considered to be the crowning achievement of medieval
culture and art in Serbia.
» The monastic complex consists of the fascinating Church of
the Virgin (1183-1196), the Church of SS Joachim and Anne
(also known as the King‘s Church) and the Church of St.
Nicholas, a simple single-nave building. The monastery circle
contains monuments raised over a period of 130 years and
several Serbian rulers had a hand in their construction.
» At the start of this period, the young Serbian feudal state
under Nemanja was consolidating its independence, and
by Milutin‘s reign it had reached the height of its political,
cultural and economic power. The strengthening of the
medieval state and of its ruler‘s might is naturally reflected
in these monuments. In this unique ambient, we will have
