TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2005
Anglo-Swedish Society is a registered charity.
The registration number is 289688
"The objects of the Society, which shall have no political character, are:
(a)
the advancement of the education of the public in the science, art, literature,
music, history, economics, philosophy, culture and other recognised subjects of
the academic study of the country of Sweden; and
(b)
the support of any other charitable activities.
In furtherance of the above-mentioned objects, but not further or otherwise, the Society shall have the following
powers:
(i)
to arrange public lectures, classes, exhibitions, readings, concerts and broadcasts;
(ii)
to print and publish such pamphlets and publications as shall be necessary for the
attainment of the objects;
(iii)
to administer any funds available for charitable educational purposes.”
Organisation
A board of trustees, known as the Council comprising the Officers and up to 24 members, administers the charity.
The Officers are, the President, the Chairman, up to 2 Vice-Chairmen, the Honorary Treasurer and Honorary
Secretary or two joint Honorary Secretaries. The Officers other than the President, with the Council members, are
elected by the charity's members. They hold office until the end of the next Annual General Meeting when they
may be re-elected. The trustees receive no emoluments.
The President, although an Officer of the Society, takes no part in the management of the Society.
The Council has appointed an Executive committee from its members with the Chairman as its Chairman and a
Committee comprising the Officers of the Society and the Chairmen of the Sub-Committees. The following SubCommittees have been established - Membership, Chairman Mr R Stenram; Events, Chairman Ms L Persson;
Scholarships & Awards, Chairman Dr C Goodacre. These sub-committees have power to co-opt additional
members.
Investment powers and policy
Under the Rules of the Society its property is vested in not more than four Trustees appointed by the Council.
Otherwise these custodian trustees take no part in the Society's management. The Society has the power to make
any investment which the trustees see fit. The Council has considered the most appropriate policy for investing
funds and has found that specialised unit trusts, designed for the charity sector, and bank accounts paying high tax
free interest, meet their requirements to generate both income and capital growth. The Council consider the
income returned on investments in the year to be satisfactory.
Reserves
The trustees have forecast the level of free reserves (that is those funds not tied up in fixed assets and designated
and restricted funds) the charity will require to sustain its operations and make appropriate adjustments should
there be a material reduction in the charity's income. The trustees consider that the most appropriate level of free
reserves is a sum equivalent to three months of the charity's running costs £1,621 (2004: £1,326). At 31 December
2005 the Society held unrestricted reserves of £44,630 (£42,985) of which £23,806 (£21,035) is held in
investments to provide income and £479 (£NIL) is held in fixed assets leaving free reserves of £20,345 (21,950).

Risk Management
The trustees, acknowledging that risk management is their responsibility, have examined the major risks that the
charity faces and have concluded that current risk management systems are satisfactory.
Statement of the Financial Responsibilities of the Council
Law applicable to charities in England & Wales requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each
financial year which give a true and fair view of the charity’s financial activities during the year and of its financial
position at the end of the year.
In preparing the financial statements giving a true and fair view, the trustees should follow best practice and:
•
select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently;
•
make judgments and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
•
state whether applicable accounting standards and statements of recommended practice have been
followed, subject to any departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements;
•
prepare the financial statements on a going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the
charity will continue in operation.
The trustees are responsible for keeping accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy the financial
position of the charity and which enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act
1993. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps
for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities. In particular they are responsible for investing
charitable funds wisely to maximise the return in a manner conducive to its charitable needs and demands.
The trustees are responsible for ensuring that the trustees’ report and other information included in the annual
report is prepared in accordance with charity law in the United Kingdom.

REVIEW OF ACTIVITIES 2005
The Society had a successful year in 2005. Our membership has remained stable and our finances are in good
order.
During the year the Society further extended its charitable activities, ably overseen by my colleague Christina
Goodacre, which are aimed at enabling young people from both countries to study the arts or take part in cultural
exchange programmes in the United Kingdom and Sweden. We have now built up a portfolio of annual
scholarships is association with a small number of well-known educational establishments in both countries. This
year we supported Lina Markeby, a mezzo soprano, and Emilie Hornlund who plays the viola, in their postgraduate
studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. We organised and financed an exchange programme
between Konstfackhögskolan and The Royal College of Art which benefited Laura Daniels who spent 10 weeks
studying glass design at Konstfack in Stockholm and Christian Maldonado who spent a similar period at the RCA in
London. Two students from University College London, Stephen Zill and Rhys Langely, attended summer schools
in Malung and Uppsala respectively in order to study Swedish language and culture. Our first Culinary Scholarship
was awarded to a young Swede, Oskar Pettersson, from the Restaurant School in Nyköping who, with a great deal
of help from Lee Persson, was accepted as a trainee at Heston Blumenthal’s now world-famous restaurant ‘The
th
Fat Duck’ in Bray. We also provided funds towards the continuing archaeological excavations of a 15 century
convent of the Order of Saint Birgitta at Syon House outside London.
I should like to thank all our members - individual as well as Corporate - for making this charitable activity possible,
but in particular our Patrons of the Arts for their valuable contributions. Our Patrons of Arts were AstraZeneca plc,
Doughty Hanson & Co., Investor London Limited, SEB, Securitas Services Limited, Rexam plc and Dr Lisbet
Rausing.
Lee Persson continued to arrange a wide variety of outstanding events to bring members and their guests together.
Among the highlights were the visit to the celebrated Strindberg exhibition at Tate Modern, the tea we took at
Brooks’s Club in St James’, the visit by a small group of members to Clarence House, the London home of the
Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall and a tour of Syon House, the Duke of Northumberland’s exquisite
London home on whose grounds the archaeological excavations mentioned above are taking place.
To Lennart Sjöström, a much appreciated colleague on the Council of the Society, who is fighting his illness with
great determination and good humour, I send warmest wishes on behalf of members of the Society and from his
colleagues on the Council.
Lastly, I thank all my colleagues on the Council for their hard work and generous contribution to the Society.
Anthony Arfwedson, Chairman

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT TO
THE TRUSTEES AND COUNCIL OF THE ANGLO-SWEDISH SOCIETY
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2005
We report on the accounts of the Trust for the year ended 31st December 2005, which are set out on pages 7 to 11.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
As the charity's trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts; you consider that the audit
requirement of section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the Act) does not apply.
It is our responsibility to state, on the basis of procedures specified in the General Directions given by the Charity
Commissioners under section 43 (7)(b) of the Act, whether particular matters have come to our attention.
Basis of opinion
Our examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners.
An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts
presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts,
and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not
provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently we do not express an audit opinion
on the view given by the accounts.
Independent examiner's unqualified statement
In connection with our examination no matter has come to our attention:
(1)
which gives us reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements
• to keep accounting records in accordance with section 41 of the Act; and
• to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with accounting
requirements of the Act have not been met; or
(2)
to which in our opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts
to be reached.
