Today, PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP) announced the launch
USA Technologies said it is no longer accepting
MasterCard debit cards. Higher interchange fees resulting from the passage of the Durbin Amendment
have made the cost of processing the cards prohibitive for small-ticket transactions.
The cashless payment provider, whose ePort
readers are widely use in the vending industry,
continues to accept Visa debit cards and all major
credit cards -- including Mastercard -- at pre-Durbin
Amendment rates.
“We and our customers would love to accept MasterCard debit but only at such time when the debit
interchange fees are competitive with Visa debit,”
said USAT senior sales vice-president Mike Lawlor.
He said MasterCard’s debit card rates are approximately 250% higher for a typical $1.50 vending
transaction.
On Oct. 1, Visa and MasterCard increased the
debit card interchange fee cap to 22¢ per transaction, as precipitated by the Durbin Amendment. The
move disproportionately impacts merchants who
sell products or services for less than approximately
$11 a transaction. USAT announced last month that
it was able to maintain its pre-Durbin Amendment
rates for small-ticket transactions.
Lawlor said the company remains in talks with
MasterCard and is hopeful that it will secure competitive rates for MasterCard debit transactions.
“The ball’s squarely in their court and we truly hope
they change their position,” he commented. “If they
become more competitive, we’re more than happy
to turn the debit cards back on. It’s a loud message
from the vending industry at large that their debit
fees are just not acceptable.”
Lawler added that USAT has seen very little
impact on overall cashless sales since turning off
MasterCard debit card acceptance. “Initially, it appears that consumers are using other cards,” he said,
pointing out that over 80% of all debit transactions
are made with Visa debit cards.

gift, they’re given the option of either thanking the original sender with a gift of their own or paying it forward and
gifting a beverage to someone else.
PepsiCo’s innovative use of telemetry with the Social
Vending System also delivers tremendous operational
benefits, allowing customers to closely manage inventory
levels and delivery scheduling remotely, and easily update
digital content online, enabling them to change messaging
and media content as needed.
“Our vision is to use innovative technology to empower
consumers and create new ways for them to engage with
our brands, their social networks and each other at the
point of purchase,” said Mikel Durham, Chief Innovation
Officer at PepsiCo Foodservice. “Social Vending extends
our consumers’ social networks beyond the confines of
their own devices and transforms a static, transaction-oriented experience into something fun and exciting they’ll
want to return to, again and again.”
Social Vending also enables “Random Acts of Refreshment” – the ability to buy a drink for a complete stranger
through any other Social Vending system. For example,
a consumer could send a symbol of encouragement someone in a city that has experienced challenging weather, or
a congratulatory beverage to a student at a university that
just won a championship. The platform holds potential to
extend PepsiCo’s digital and social programs for its food
and beverage brands.

USI Troubleshooting
For models 3014, 3014A, 3015, 3015A, 3023A,
3024A, 3025A, 3041, all other 30-- models.
Problem-One or more selections will not vend,
but says, “make another selection” after the vend
price is reached.
Solution-Main harness cut or damaged, replace
main harness.
Problem-Once vend price is reached, one or more
rows vend, and credit is errased immediately.
Solution-1. Keys on keypad are stuck, or broken.
Remove keypad, clean/free stuck keys. 2. Main
harness damaged, replace main harness.
Problem-Machine beeping constantly non-stop.
Solution-Keys on keypad stuck, or keypad is
defective. Clean/free keys on the keypad, or replace keypad.
Problem-Machine takes dollar bill, but doesn’t
show credit.
Solution-Check and make sure validator connection to control board is secure. Control board or
display may be bad.
Problem-Machines set up with a MAKA bill acceptor have poor bill acceptance.

Soda Machine Refrigeration
Problem-Your Machine gets too cold and
freezes soda.
Solution-Replace thermostat first. If it contiues with the problem, recharge refrigerant.
Problem-Your Compressor seems to run, but
machine will not cool.
Solution-Check fan behind the condensor
coils (on the bottom of the machine). Ensure
that it is running. If it isn’t, replace the fan.
Problem-Your Evaporator coil fans are running, but the compressor isn’t.
Solution-Make sure that you thermstat is not
set on the “off” position.
Problem-Your Machine stays cool, but the
compressor never cycles.
Solution-Check and make sure that you door
is screwed all the way shut, and your rubber
seal on the inside door seals the machine.
Also, check and make sure the delivery door
is sealing/shutting.
