At the heart of University music-making, CUMS exists to enhance the
excellence of music performance at Cambridge. Our ensembles bring bold
programmes to the platform and the 2015-2016 Season promises to be our
most exciting yet.
This Autumn boasts a terrific wealth of opportunities for our musicians,
including CUCO performing at London’s Kings Place and John Wilson
conducting Rachmaninov’s Symphony No.2 with CUMS Symphony Orchestra.
In October, selected instrumentalists perform in a programme of
contemporary music alongside members of the Philharmonia Orchestra. For
our most ambitious event of the season, we are thrilled to welcome Richard
Farnes, Music Director of Opera North, to conduct Act I of Verdi’s Otello, in
King’s College Chapel. In the final term, I am particularly looking forward to
welcoming Paul Daniel who will conduct CUCO in a performance of Brahms’
impassioned 3rd Symphony.
Our Lunchtime Concert Series continues its varied offering through the year,
which includes the Cambridge University Chamber Choir, New Music
Ensemble, the Gesualdo Six and the Cambridge University Percussion
Ensemble – all free to attend! Our Competitions augment the exceptional
opportunities for the University’s most talented musicians. The 2015 Concerto
Competition winner, Julia Hwang, will perform with returning conductor Carlos
Izcaray. Joel Sandelson, our Conducting Scholar, tackles Mahler’s monumental
5th Symphony in October; and the première of a new work by our Composerin-Residence, Chris Mortlock, promises to be an unmissable addition to the diary.
We say farewell to Stephen Cleobury after a distinguished association with
CUMS for over 30 years. For his final concert in June, Stephen has chosen
Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius and is joined by three outstanding soloists who
all started their musical careers in Cambridge.

Alto, CUMS Chorus
Singing in the Chorus has provided some glorious musical
experiences, and this year is no exception as our season includes
well-loved choral works and the opportunity to explore a rare
oratorio by Louis Spohr. Rachmaninov described his choral
masterpiece The Bells as ‘of all my works the one I love most’ and
I am particularly excited to perform it in all its glory in Russian.
Ending the year with The Dream of Gerontius will be a moving
moment for the Chorus as, with three outstanding Cambridge
alumni as soloists, we mark Stephen Cleobury’s final concert as
Principal Conductor.

I have played in the Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra for
the past year, and have hugely enjoyed being part of such a
dynamic ensemble, playing a range of repertoire from Mozart's
Piano Concerto No.4 with Stephen Kovacevich to Britten's War
Requiem with the Britten Sinfonia. This season, I’m particularly
looking forward to Paul Daniel joining us for Stravinsky, and it is a
real treat that Jack Liebeck has found time in his busy schedule to
come to perform the sensational Lindberg Violin Concerto.

This is shaping up to be a hugely enjoyable musical season
for members of the Cambridge University Wind Orchestra
and I am delighted to be conducting all of their concerts
this year. Highlights include the annual Varsity concert (in
which we share the stage with the wind orchestra from the
University of Oxford), the ever-popular schools concert
(which will include some choreographically striking
moments in our performance of Eric Whitacre’s Godzilla
Eats Las Vegas) and our joint concert with the CUMS
Concert Orchestra.

This coming year is going to be very exciting as a
percussionist in CUMS SO. I am very much looking
forward to being able to perform one of my favourite
works, Mahler's Fifth Symphony, in Michaelmas term. In
addition, the Cambridge University Percussion Ensemble
(comprising percussionists primarily from CUMS SO) will
perform in the Lunchtime series, affording players the
opportunity to experience not only standard ensemble
repertoire, but also newly-composed works. This year
promises to be a lot of fun.

CUMS ON TOUR In 2016
In July 2015 CUMS Symphony Orchestra
toured the Netherlands receiving
standing ovations and were thrilled to
have one of their concerts broadcast
live on local television. This season
CUMS Chorus travel to Rome from
1 - 4 April 2016 and will be performing
in two of the city's beautiful churches
with conductor Mark Austin.
CUWO are delighted to be performing
closer to home: in Oxford for their
annual Wind Orchestras’ Varsity concert
and, for the first time, they will be
visiting Bristol University to perform
with the University’s Wind Orchestra.

LONDON CHAMBER
MUSIC RECITALS
OUR HISTORY
CUMS is one of the oldest and most distinguished
university music societies in the world. It offers a worldclass musical education for members of the University
and local residents, nurturing the great musicians of the
future and providing performing opportunities for over
500 Cambridge musicians every year. The society has
played a pivotal role in British musical life for over 170
years. It has educated Sir Andrew Davis, Sir Mark Elder,
Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Edward Gardner, Christopher
Hogwood and Robin Ticciati, has premièred works by
Brahms, Holloway, Lutoslawski, Rutter, Saxton and
Vaughan Williams, and has given generations of
Cambridge musicians the experience of performing
alongside visiting conductors and soloists including
Britten, Dvořák, Kodaly, Menuhin and Tchaikovsky. Since
the 1870s, CUMS has enjoyed the leadership of several of
Britain’s finest musicians, including Sir Charles Villiers
Stanford, Sir David Willcocks, Sir Philip Ledger, and, from
1983 to 2009, Stephen Cleobury. In 2009, Stephen
Cleobury assumed a new role as Principal Conductor of
the CUMS Chorus, Sir Roger Norrington was appointed
as Principal Guest Conductor and a series was launched
to expose CUMS members to a succession of world-class
visiting conductors. In 2010, CUMS entered another new
phase when it merged with the Cambridge University
Chamber Orchestra and Cambridge University Music
Club. In October 2010, the Society launched the
Cambridge University Lunchtime Concerts – a new series
of weekly chamber recitals at West Road Concert Hall
showcasing our finest musical talent. In 2011 it welcomed
the Cambridge University Chamber Choir, which is
directed by Martin Ennis and David Lowe. Most recently,

in 2014, the Cambridge University Jazz Orchestra and
the Cambridge University New Music Ensemble joined
CUMS as associate ensembles. CUMS continues to
provide opportunities for our finest student soloists and
conductors by awarding conducting scholarships and
concerto prizes, and it encourages new music by running
a Composition Competition and premièring at least one
new work each year. Recent highlights have included
Wagner’s Parsifal (Act III) conducted by Sir Mark Elder, a
recording of Haydn and Mozart symphonies with Sir
Roger Norrington, a recording of The Epic of Everest’s
original score for the British Film Institute and Britten’s
War Requiem conducted by Stephen Cleobury in Ely
Cathedral.

Since it was founded in 1843, CUMS has provided unique
opportunities for successive generations of Cambridge
musicians. It has immeasurably enriched the cultural life
of the University and City, and, having launched many of
the biggest careers in classical music, it has played a pivotal role in the musical world beyond. CUMS receives no
core funding from the University, and income from ticket
sales does not meet the full cost of delivering a worldclass musical education. The CUMS Supporters’ Circle
has been established to address this pressing financial
need. All those who value Cambridge’s vibrant musical
heritage, and want to maintain it for the 21st century, are
invited to join the Circle.
Benefactor: £250 – £499 per annum
Principal Benefactor: £500 – £999 per annum
• All of the above, plus opportunities to sit in on selected
rehearsals.
The Stanford Circle: £1,000 – £2,499 per annum
The Vaughan Williams Circle: £2,500+ per annum
The Britten Circle: £10,000+ per annum

as the supporter of a specific activity each season.
