FACT SHEETS
ELEMENT 1: HANDLE AND USE
CHEMICALS SAFELY
1.1 The symptoms, causes and common forms of occupational contact
dermatitis are recognised and preventative routines are implemented
according to workplace procedures
Dermatitis
Work-related dermatitis is a skin condition caused by things that people touch. In
hairdressing the hands are the most commonly affected part of the body.
SA
M
PL
E
Hairdressers have been identified as an occupational group who are greatly at risk
of contracting skin disorders, especially hand dermatitis. The term generally
applies to inflammation of the skin, usually from exposure to irritants.
(Source unknown)
Dermatitis
What is dermatitis?
Dermatitis is a skin inflammation, caused by exposure to irritants.
There are three types of dermatitis you need to be aware of:
1) irritant contact dermatitis
2) allergic contact dermatitis
3) contact urticaria.
Irritant contact dermatitis
The most common form of dermatitis is irritant contact dermatitis. This is a toxic
reaction of the skin and can be reduced by the wearing of gloves and moisturising
the skin with the appropriate hand creams.

The Salon Workbook
Irritant contact dermatitis can be caused by continual use of water, shampoo,
conditioner, cleaning aids and chemicals.
Allergic contact dermatitis
Allergic contact dermatitis is a reaction to dyes, tints, perm solution and bleaches.
Prevention is the key here. A chemical irritant known as a „sensitiser‟ causes
allergic dermatitis, for example phenylendiamine in hair colouring and persulphate
salts in bleach powders.

E
This condition may take longer to develop and causes a mild to severe dermatitis or
eczema.
