The Children’s Playhouse is a non-profit
organization dedicated to the early development
of children around Boone, North Carolina. The
playhouse has become very successful as an
entertaining and enjoyable space for children
ages 0-8 years and their families.
Recently, many families have donated to the
Children’s Playhouse in an effort to provide the
kids with new and creative spaces. Appalachian
State’s interior designers have worked with the
Children’s Playhouse over the past few weeks to
create possible solutions.
Christine Collins and Alissa Shannon worked
together to design a functional and educational
space in the basement of the playhouse. We
were inspired to develop an “outerspace”
concept because we feel that it will enable the
kids to use their imagination at a critical growing
point in their lives. The visual aspect of fantasy is
important to a child’s advancement, and it can
be seen throughout the playhouse basement.
Our design encourages kids to be active and
increase social awareness through the use of
bright colors, climbing structures, and a kitchen
area. In addition, parents can choose to sit and
watch or interact with their children. With our
design, we intend to allow children to learn about
the world around us and beyond.

Future Design Possibilities
It is recommended to purchase a residential bounce house when funds permit. This particular design is called the Kaleida Disco Inflatable Bounce House made by KidWise
Outdoors. It can have a variety of uses including indoor birthday parties, the state fair, and other events. We believe this attraction will bring in more money to the Children’s Playhouse.
