We Are Blessed to Be a Blessing
“Now the Lord said to Abram, ‘Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s
house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless
you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.” Genesis 12:1-2
“And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work.” 2 Corinthians 9:8
During the weekend of November 8-10th, 2013 our congregation was blessed to
share in a variety of mission opportunities that have already impacted the lives of others
and will continue to extend blessings in those lives for years to come.
35 youth and adults, from HSUMC, were attending the North Carolina Conference of
The United Methodist Church annual youth event called PILGRIMAGE in Fayetteville
where 5,000+ youth from all across our conference gathered to worship and fellowship
together for three days. On that Saturday afternoon, November 9 th, our youth were knee
deep in a sweet potato field gleaning sweet potatoes that would otherwise rot. Gleaning
is the biblical practice and command that comes from Leviticus 23:22: “When you reap
the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the
gleanings of your harvest; you shall leave them for the poor and for the alien: I am the
Lord your God” (see also Leviticus 19:9 and Ruth 2:2-3). Through the Society of Saint
Andrew (www.endhunger.org), the 250 bags of sweet potatoes our youth helped to glean
and put on trucks were taken to the 2nd Harvest Food Bank which distributed those bags
to food cupboards and crisis centers throughout Eastern NC. Those very sweet potatoes
gathered in the hands of our youth were on the tables of hungry families the same week.
What an amazing blessing!
Also, on Saturday, November 9th, a team of 5 adults from HSUMC including Gary Adams, Rich and Shelia Wood, Marcie Votava and I spent 8 hours in Apex working with
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY. We were doing framing work, building and putting walls and
weather wrapping for 3 exterior and interior 2 nd floor walls for a new home for a family
who would not be able to afford their own home otherwise. Construction was going on at
HSUMC

8 other new homes in the same neighborhood by over 70 volunteers, future home owners and
contractors. We worked hard, hammered a lot of nails and 2 x 4s, made new friends, and were
blessed to share in this good work! To learn more about what Habitat for Humanity is doing in
Wake County visit http://www.habitatwake.org. Also, keep on the look out for other work days
through HSUMC!
On Sunday, November 10th, our United Methodist Women and other church members
packaged 226 boxes for OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD. (We took a total of 300 boxes to
the distribution). These boxes will be sent somewhere in the world to children as Christmas
gifts. In addition to the toys, pencils, paper, and toiletries in the boxes, a picture of our UMW,
the love and good news of Jesus Christ is included in pamphlets and in follow up with the children and communities. You can read more about OCC at HSUMC in the article inside this
newsletter.
All in one weekend, the people of Holly Springs UMC were blessed to be a blessing in our
local community (in Apex), in Eastern North Carolina, and throughout the world. Thank you for
your part in supporting the ministries and mission of the church by your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service and your witness!
Grace and peace,
Pastor Kelly Lyn
HSUMC's Staff/Pastor Parish Relations Committee is pleased
to announce that Jil Murfee will serve as our new Church
Administrator!
Jil has lived in Holly Springs for six years but in North Carolina for
almost 21 years. Jil started attending our church with her husband,
Harrison, and two children, Kayla and Harrison III, in January
2012, and they became members in April 2012. Jil graduated from
Virginia Commonwealth University with a Business degree and has
an extensive administrative background. After working ten years
with the Wake County Public School System, Jil made the decision
to stay at home to raise her children. Now with both of her children
in school, she is excited to have the opportunity to return to work
part-time and still be home with her children after school.
She considers it an honor to serve our church family and community in her new role of church administrator. Jil will assume her new
position effective Monday, December 2, 2013. Her e-mail address
is [email protected] .

From Erik’s Desk
Greetings, everyone!
Though it is getting dark a little earlier nowadays, we are in the midst of my favorite time of
the year! Since the summer, Holly Springs UMYF has grown with the addition of 19 sixthgrade students! We continue to have strong attendance on Sunday nights, and it makes my
heart happy to see all of the new faces.
Also, Pilgrimage was absolutely amazing this year! 28 youth and 7 adults traveled to Fayetteville the weekend of November 8-10 for a meaningful weekend of worship, fellowship and service. While there, we worshipped and celebrated the 20th anniversary of the event with over
5,100 other youth and adult leaders! That Saturday, our youth – along with two other groups –
helped glean some 250 bags of sweet potatoes through the Society of St. Andrew. Moreover,
it was awesome to see the youth come together and bond with each other over the course of
the weekend.
I am also thrilled to announce that there will be an actual Youth Council this year, consisting of
both youth and adults, to help plan future events and discuss new ideas and possibilities. Any
youth interested in applying to be a representative has been asked to write a one-page, double
-spaced essay as to why they want to serve on the council. Those essays are to be given to
me NO LATER THAN DECEMBER 1ST.
We have a few things on the horizon as far as UMYF goes. Here are some dates to place on
your calendars:
December 1 – First Youth Council meeting in Room 9 (4:00pm).
December 15 – UMYF will go Christmas caroling and have our Christmas party (5-7pm).
February 2 – UMYF Super Bowl party at HSUMC.
March 21-22 – 30 Hour Famine at Aldersgate UMC in Durham.
As you can see, we have a lot of good stuff coming up. I hope that everyone is able to attend
all of the awesomeness! Have a safe and blessed Thanksgiving!
Grace and Peace,
Erik

Gail recently attended our church and wrote an article about her experience attending our
Homecoming and trying grits. The following article is reprinted with permission.
On Island Time: True Grit
Gail Ostrishko Post & Voice Columnist | Posted: Wednesday, November 13, 2013 2:02 pm
I finally attended the church I have been planning to visit for quite some time. I felt a warm welcome as I entered the old sanctuary surrounded by stunning stained glass.
The wood floor creaked as I took my seat in the curve of the classic carved pew. The guy playing
guitar gave the place a soothing southern sense as we all settled in for the service.
I didn’t realize it was homecoming, so there was a larger crowd than usual, though still small
town, along with a guest pastor from previous years.
We were all invited for breakfast, which appears to be a weekly tradition, as are the grits. I have never been a big
fan of grits, but the pastor, raising her eyebrow, recommended I reconsider. So I tried some, and they were delicious. After all, they had pimento cheese and bacon in them, how could they not be good?
I saw kids lapping them up like ice cream, several bowls in a row.
I had taken a small taste, fearful of offending if I didn’t eat my entire serving. I told my new friend I was going
back for more and she said “good luck with that one.” She was right. That huge pot full of grits was already
empty, including the soup ladle used to serve them. The saddest part is I was shameless, shaking those last few
grits from the grips of the serving utensils.
I went back the following Sunday, for the fellowship of course, but I confess I was looking forward to more grits.
I got a whole bowl this time, and learned to embellish them with salsa. This time there were still some left when I
went back for seconds.
While I don’t consume grits consistently, I have grown increasingly tolerant of grit in my bed.
My bird chasing beach dog loves the beach, and though I bathe her after her raucous romps, she inevitably brings
some of the beach to bed with her.
I used to suggest she sleep on a special sheet at the foot of the bed but that was futile. She loves stretching out,
sometimes snuggling under the covers, so I just shake out the sheets in the morning and go about my way.
Not the case when I ordered Cajun fried oysters at my favorite restaurant recently. I have had them before and
they are usually awesome, but this time they were exceptionally gritty. What a difference just a few grains of sand
and shell made in my meal.
We’ve all got true grit, though we may be selective in which situations we embrace and appreciate it. New experiences develop grit, and can be a catalyst for getting outside our comfort zone, which is actually the only place we
really learn.
What will you do new this week to develop true grit?

United Methodist Women (UMW)
Purpose Statement:
The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose PURPOSE is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in
the global ministries of the church.
We had a wonderful Operation Christmas Child packing day on Nov 10. We packed 226 boxes.
These boxes were dedicated in the service on Nov 17.
Many thanks to those that helped that day and all year long. Many hands go into this mission:
working the fundraising the shipping of the boxes, donating the items, donating the coke points to
get free items, moving the many tubs from the Annex to the CLC, packing the boxes, moving the
left over items back to the Annex, taking the packed boxes to the drop-off place, etc.

This is the path that the boxes will take: The boxes will first go to a local drop-off center and then
on to Charlotte, NC. After being double checked in Charlotte they then head to their final destination – in the hands of a child somewhere in the world.
The day after Thanksgiving, some of our Church members will be going to Charlotte, NC to help
at that Operation Christmas Child Center. This has always been wonderful experience.
The UMW will also be sponsoring a Christmas family this year. Information will be in the weekly
bulletin/email when we have the details.
The UMW would like to encourage everyone to get involved now and all year with helping others.
There are many mission opportunities available. Just find the one that speaks to you.
For questions about the HSUMW, you may contact Gwen Adams ([email protected]/919557-7506) or any other member.

HOLLY SPRINGS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH PRAYER GROUP
Why:
In obedience with the Book of James:
“Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of
praise. Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him
and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make
the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be
healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.”
James 5:13-16 NIV
What:
The Prayer Group meets each week to discuss, pray for, and update a list that includes
prayer needs for those members of the congregation, their friends, and relatives as they
have identified their needs and concerns. The updated Prayer List is then distributed to
the church “prayer chain”. Each person on the Prayer Chain is asked to pray for each
person on the Prayer List.
Where:

Silent Night
By, Joseph Mohr (1816)
Christmas gift suggestions:
To your enemy, forgiveness.
To an opponent, tolerance.
To a friend, your heart.
To a customer, service.
To all, charity.
To every child, a good example.
To yourself, respect.

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Savior is born
Christ, the Savior is born.
Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.
