KNIGHT OF THE MONTH
Our Knight of the Month for May, 2013 is PGK Mike Bauer.
Mike has been an EDW member for many years. He has served
and continues to serve our council as a committee chairman. Mike,
and a crew of recruits from the bar, stuffed all of the Easter eggs
for the hunt on March 30. Mike reported it took many hours to
stuff the eggs and about 5 minutes for them to be scooped up by
the eager kids who were at the hunt.
Mike is also willing to step up as needed during council meetings,
ready to serve in any chair where there happens to be a vacancy
for one reason or another. As any GK or PGK will tell you that is
greatly appreciated.
For all he does for us at EDW please join me in congratulating
PGK Mike Bauer, Knight of the Month for May, 2013.
FAMILY SPORTS NIGHT?
Anyone Interested in utilizing the volleyball court, the bocce pitch
(guess on pitch), the basketball courts in a friendly, semi-organized,
close to the Council Home Bar evening sports night? Please let me
know soon, and let’s see if we can get something going! Please contact
me, Chris Bannon [email protected] or 703-869-1460

GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE
May is the month of Mary, the Mother of God, patron of the
Americas and the Queen of the Knights. We ask Mary, in her
powerful role as intercessor for us, for her prayers on behalf of
our new pope Francis. May he be guided with wisdom from on
high as he leads our church as the latest successor of St. Peter.
In keeping with this Marian theme for May remember our
Sunday rosary at 12:30. Meet in the CH. We are led by PGK
Kenny Goss.
May also marks the 90th birthday of our council. Let’s remember those brothers who established our council in our prayers…
and maybe with a raised glass in the council home next time you
visit there.
Please plan to attend the council meetings in May. Our first
meeting is on May 2 and is a joint one with the Columbus Club.
President Owen Beirne Jr. and other directors will be at the meeting
to answer your questions. This is another opportunity to interact
with the board other than the annual meeting.
The second meeting is on May 16th. We will have a first degree
that night along with council elections. All council offices are up
for election. Nominations will be accepted from the floor. Please
come to this meeting and VOTE!
Elsewhere in this edition of Knight Life you will read about
upcoming events. The pool and The Deep End lounge open this
month. PGK Thom Galvin and his staff are looking forward
to another record season. I understand we will also have some
interesting new beverage selections.
Norm Marcocci has an article about our annual trip to Nats Park.
We have 100 tickets and this event is guaranteed to sell out. As
you know people around town who couldn’t spell ‘Lombardozzi’
a year ago are snapping up seats as if they have always been fans.
See Norm’s article and the EDW website for details.
My brother Knight, may God bless us all in our works and may
we ever be united in charity.
Vivat Jesus. Pray the rosary.
Stephen McTeague
Grand Knight.
KENNY’S KWOTES
We celebrate our Mother’s this month of May,
For the things they do for us each and every day,
Mary lived her life full of peace and love,
Her Grace descends upon us from above,
The Spirit is reborn again at Pentecost,
Inspiring us to help find those who may be lost.

Easter was a great success last month thanks to everyone involved for making it possible.
I would like to take this opportunity to clarify booking procedures at the Council Home.
• As of January 1, 2013, we are no longer booking the Council Home to the General
Public.
• Only members in good standing and their immediate families are eligible to rent the
Council Home.
• ALL bookings must go through the General Manager at the Columbus Club.
• Of course all members are offered and encouraged to use the Paradise Ballroom
or Main Ballroom. However, there are members who wish to use the Council Home due
to sentimental reasons, family history, etc. It is our goal to honor our members wishes
whenever possible.
• Please remember that we are a Council of over 1700 members and each member has
equal rights and privileges regardless of their frequency on campus.
• In the future when seeing guests in the front rooms of the Council Home know that
they are Brothers.
A reminder, Mother’s Day Brunch, Sunday, May 12, Supper Club, Friday, May 24 and
Memorial Day BBQ, May 27. Please make your reservations early.
MEN CAN’T GET PREGNANT, SO THEY
SHOULDN’T TELL WOMEN WHAT TO DO!
Submitted by Bill Johnson - original author unknown
The pro-life movement is often characterized as an effort by men to control women’s
bodies. But in fact, studies show that women are actually more pro-life than men. Perhaps
they recognize that abortion often serves the selfish interests of men, rather than the real
needs of women.
The experience of pro-life counselors and the testimony of women who have spoken
out about their abortions show that men are more likely to push women into abortions they
do not want than to try to force them not to have an abortion. But we never hear abortion
advocates speaking out against this kind of influence (and coercion) of men over women.
The pro-life movement calls on men to take responsibility for the children they have
helped to conceive. The men who are active in the pro-life movement are responding to
the call to step up and be advocates for women and children.
Finally, no one would try to impose this principle—that only those directly affected by
an issue should have any say about it—to any other social justice movement. It was not
only slaves, former slaves and former slave owners who spoke out for emancipation. It
was not only black Americans who fought for civil rights. Nor should it be only women,
today, who speak out against abortion.
KEVIN HOGAN’S MEMORIAL MASS
Mass will be offered on the anniversary of Kevin’s death. EDW Council was a big part of
his life, and he was a big part of EDW Council’s many activities over decades.
All are invited at:

LADIES U-KNIGHTED NEWS
Jo Balsamo Wood
Greetings!!! LUK wants to take this opportunity to wish all
moms a very happy and special Mother’s day. LUK also wants to
wish a very Happy 90th Birthday/Anniversary to the EDW Council
(May 20, 1923). The days are getting longer and Memorial Day
(the unofficial start of summer) is almost here!
Speaking of Memorial Day, be sure to stop by the Ladies UKnighted tent during the Memorial Day picnic to pick up some
sweet treats and see some of the items we have for sale, including
watercolor prints of the Council Home by our very own Meredith
Dittmar. We will be selling yummy homemade baked good, as
well as Christmas Ornaments and cookbooks. The cookbooks are
a great gift for teachers at the end of the school year. Wishing you
all good luck in our 50/50 raffle – the more tickets sold, the greater
the prize. As with all of our moneymaking projects, proceeds go
toward refurbishing the Old Council Home. So stop by and grab a
bite to eat and say hello.
We are always looking for new members. We meet at 7:30 p.m.
on the first Thursday of each month at the K of C Old Council
Home, 5115 Little Falls Road, Arlington, VA. Membership is open
to any woman who would like to help those in need or have fun
participating in our many activities, whether religious, charitable,
or social. Please stop by for a meeting. Visit our website at www.
ladiesuknighted.com or follow us on facebook at Ladies U-Knighted.
Ladies U-Knighted wants to congratulate former LUK President,
Susan Walthall on her retirement. Susan retired after 39 years of
Federal service. Great accomplishment – Congratulations!
Please join LUK in wishing a Happy Birthday to Tana Farrell
(May 20). Note that Tana and the EDW Council share the same
birthday! Our next meeting is May 2 – please join the fun.
Do you know anyone whose life or career has been drastically
changed during these years of economic downturn? It’s very likely
that someone in your immediate or extended family or group of
friends is facing financial uncertainty now. Maybe there’s a possibility that you (or your spouse) could lose your job or change
employers.
Too many people have often relied on group term life insurance as their only safety net. Often, this insurance is an employee
benefit provided at low or no cost. The existence of this coverage
might convince someone that personally-owned life insurance is
not necessary.
Only having “through work” insurance can leave you and your
family vulnerable. Most group life insurance policies are limited
in amount, which may be tied to salary or some other benchmark.
These numbers are often capped, and this cap may be dangerously
low when compared to your family’s actual needs. In fact, without
a detailed needs analysis, any employer-provided coverage will
likely cause a shortfall at the insured’s death.
In addition, the amount of group insurance offered is almost
always reduced, sometimes dramatically, when you retire. You
could one day find yourself without coverage, and if your health
has changed (which it will as you age), you might also find yourself
unable to secure individual protection. It will definitely be more
expensive.
While group life insurance can help, it does not replace the need
for individually owned life insurance. We’ll be happy to meet with
you and provide a no-cost needs analysis, so you’ll know exactly
where you stand.

May the winds of fortune sail you,
May you sail a gentle sea.
May it always be the other guy,
Who says, “This drink’s on me.”
Well, we’ll be the other guy: join us for the first time at a Retiree’s
lunch (held every Wednesday, including Ladies Day on the 3rd Wednesday of every month) and the drinks (beer, wine, and soda) are on us. In
fact, every 1st, 3rd and 5th Wednesday of the month the drinks are on
us. Four dollars for a great lunch, $2 for 50/50; best deal in town. And
not to give the wrong impression, but hard liquor is always available
