Forte is a first time recipient of the conference’s player of the week honors. Last week, Forte ran for 170 yards on 29 carries and one touchdown in leading Tulane to a 32-29 win at Mississippi State. The victory was the Green Wave’s first road win over an SEC school since downing Vanderbilt in 1989. The 170-yard effort was the second best single-game total of his career, and he moved into 12th-place among Tulane’s career rushing leaders. TULANE IS “BACK HOME IN THE ‘DOME” IN 2006: • After Hurricane Katrina displaced the Tulane football team from its New Orleans campus a year ago and forced it to play its entire 11-game season on the road, the Green Wave and its fans are “Back Home in the Dome” for the 2006 campaign. TU will host SMU, Rice, Army, Southern Miss and UCF in its first full home schedule since 2004. Tulane battles SMU in its home opener on September 30, 2006. The contest will kick-off at 6:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on College Sports Television (CSTV). SCOUTING LSU: • LSU (2-1, 0-1 SEC) outscored its opponents 90-6 in its first two outings of the year at home against Louisiana-Lafayette (45-3) and Arizona (45-3), but suffered a 7-3 loss on the road at SEC rival and third-ranked Auburn last Saturday. Junior quarterback JaMarcus Russell is averaging 239 yards per game in the air and has thrown for five touchdowns. Junior running back Alley Broussard is one of four running backs that have gained 68 or more yards this season. Senior Craig Davis is LSU’s top receiver with 207 yards on 13 receptions. Defensively, sophomore linebacker Darry Beckwith leads the team with 23 tackles, including 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for lost yardage. The Tigers led the Green Wave, 7-3, after the first quarter but exploded in the second quarter with 27 points to put away Tulane and cruise to a 48-17 final in front of 91,782, the largest crowd to ever watch a Tulane football game. TU VS. THE SEC: • Tulane has a rich history with and against the SEC. From 1933 to 1965, the Green Wave was a member of the SEC and captured the conference crown three times (1934, 1939 and 1949). When the Wave meets LSU this Saturday, it will mark the 416th all-time meeting between Tulane and an SEC opponent. TU has an overall record of 158-233-24 against the SEC’s current members. Tulane has regularly scheduled SEC teams throughout the existence, including two current SEC members during its inaugural season of college football in 1893. TU hosted both LSU and Ole Miss that season and finished 1-1 with a 34-0 win of the Tigers and a 12-4 loss to the Rebels. Tulane Football 2006 Tulane Game Notes TULANE AGAINST IN-STATE SCHOOLS: • When Tulane takes the field against LSU this Saturday, it game will mark the 148th time in school history that the Green Wave has faced an in-state opponent. TU has a record of 71-69-7 against Louisiana schools with match-ups against the following teams: - Camp Beauregard (1-0) - Centenary (3-0) - Louisiana College (4-0) - Louisiana Monroe (1-0) - LSU (64-23-7) - Louisiana Tech (7-0) - Northwestern State (6-0) - Shreveport AA (0-1) - Southeastern Louisiana (3-0) - Southern (2-0) TULANE AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS: • Tulane has an all-time record of 19-105-2 against nationally ranked opponents. TU’s last triumph over a ranked team was in 1982 against the then 12th-ranked LSU Tigers, 31-28, in Baton Rouge. Since then, the Green Wave is 0-29 vs. the Top-25. GREEN WAVE PLAYS 14TH STRAIGHT GAME ON THE ROAD: • Since being displaced on August 29, 2005, due to the severe damaged left by Hurricane Katrina, Tulane has played its last 13 games, including all of last season, on the road. The TU-LSU game marks the 14th straight road contest for Tulane over the last two seasons. The Green Wave will play a total of 15 consecutive games away from New Orleans before hosting SMU in its home opener on Sept. 30. TU’s last home game at the Louisiana Superdome came on December 4, 2004, against Louisville. BECKMAN NAMED TO RAY GUY AWARD WATCH LIST: • Senior Chris Beckman has been named to the watch list for the 2006 Ray Guy Award, which is awarded annually by the Greater Augusta Sports Council to the nation’s top NCAA Division I-A punter. A senior from Grenada, Miss., Beckman has been the picture of consistency throughout his Green Wave career and currently ranks second in Tulane career history in punting average with a mark of 42.6. Currently, he is averaging 45.8 yards per punt. Beckman ranks second in Green Wave history in punting average to Casey Roussel (43.19 yards from 1997-2001). His eight punts against Houston moved him into sixth place on the Tulane all-time list, with 181. Beckman also leaped ahead of Howard McNeil on the career punting yardage list and now stands in sole possession of fifth place with 7,718 punting yards. RICARD RACKING UP LONG DISTANCE CHARGES: • Tulane quarterback Lester Ricard is running up a long distance bill this season as he has connected on five strikes of 40 yards or more in TU’s first two games, and two of the grabs have gone for touchdowns. Last week at Mississippi State, senior Demarcus Davis had a 50-yard grab and, while sophomore Brian King had a 47-yard touchdown reception and junior Gabe Ratcliff caught a 55-yard pass. In the season opener at Houston, Ricard and junior running back Matt Forte hooked up for long distance scoring play. Ricard found Forte on a passing play out of the backfield and Forte turned the short gain into a 49-yard scoring strike, which was the longest of Forte’s career by two yards. As a freshman in 2004, the Ricard-to-Forte combination managed a 47yard scoring play against Army. FORTE MOVES INTO 12TH PLACE ON TULANE’S CAREER RUSHING CHARTS: • Junior Matt Forte entered the game with Mississippi State sitting in 14th place among the school’s career rushing leaders. By the end of the contest and 170 rushing yards later, Forte had jumped into 12th place in the Tulane career rushing record book with 1,469. He entered the game with 1,299 yards and passed Marvin Lewis (1,284, 1980-81), Steve Foley (1,308, 1972-74), Max McGee (1,394, 1951-53) and Ronny Quillian (1,402, 1955-56) during the ballgame. Forte is currently 128 yards shy of former teammate Jovon Jackson’s (2002-05) 11th place total of 1,597, and 293 yards away from breaking into Tulane’s top-10. Forte already ranks eighth on the school’s career list for yards per game (61.2) and has three 100-yard rushing games. www.TulaneGreenWave.com MEDIA INFORMATION Release Information Releases are emailed to the media and are also available on the official Tulane athletics website: www. Scelfo is the only coach to win a pair of bowl games at Tulane (1998 Liberty, 2002 Hawaii), and his teams have averaged five wins a year to mark one of the most successful periods in modern history at the school. Scelfo has an overall mark of 34-50 (.404) at Tulane. He enters the 2006 campaign ranked second all-time for games coached (84) and will surpass the school record of 91, held by Clark Shaughnessy (1915-20; 1922-26), by the end of this season. Last season, Scelfo was faced with one of the most difficult tasks by a college coach when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and displaced the Green Wave for the entire 2005 season. Tulane was forced to the Louisiana Tech in Ruston and became the first college football team to play 11 games in 11 different stadiums over the course of 11 different weeks. Scelfo kept the football team on the field of competition and displayed true leadership qualities in helping Tulane football overcome one of the worst natural disasters in American history. Scelfo has sent 10 of his Tulane players to the NFL, including a pair of first-round draft choices at quarterback in Patrick Ramsey (Redskins) and J.P. Losman (Bills) and all-time leading rusher Mewelde Moore (Vikings). This past year, linebacker Anthony Cannon became the latest Green Wave player to make it to the NFL when the Detroit Lions selected him in the 2006 draft. Off the field, Scelfo has the Green Wave succeeding in the classroom as well, as Tulane football has posted an average graduation rate of 75 percent over the past four years and nearly 80 football student-athletes have earned their degree since 2001. A 1986 graduate of Northeast Louisiana (UL-Monroe) where he was a three-year letterman at center, Scelfo spent the 1996-98 seasons as the assistant head coach and offensive line coach at Georgia, and won a Division I-AA national championship as an assistant coach at Marshall, where he worked from 1990-95. The Thundering Herd also claimed three I-AA runner-up finishes during his time at Marshall. A native of New Iberia, La., Scelfo and his wife, Nanci, have to children: Sarah (14) and Joseph II (12). Losman. Through two games this season, Ricard has inched closer to moving up the school’s career passing list for total yards. With 4,267 career yards, Ricard is 222 yards shy of passing Deron Smith (198790) for sixth-place all time. Last week at Mississippi State, Foreman grabbed his fourth career interception and returned it 49 yards. His turnover led the way for a Green Wave touchdown three plays later by Matt Forte. Foreman concluded the game with four tackles, an interception and one pass break-up. In the season opener at Houston, Route was credited with five solo tackles, including two touchdown-saving stops, he forced a fumble which TU recovered and came up with an interception on a deflection in the first half for this third career pick. Route was credited with seven tackles, including one stop for lost yardage and one pass break-up. ON THIS DATE: • Thirty-four years ago on this date, Tulane defeated 16th-ranked Georgia in New Orleans, 24-13, and debuted in the national polls the next week at No. 18. In its 112-year football history, the Green Wave has played six total games on September 23. The last time TU played on this date was against SMU in Dallas, Texas during the 2000 campaign. The Green Wave downed the Mustangs, 29-17, to notch the first of six victories on the season. BE YOUR OWN JUDGE: • Last week, Tulane had two of its five touchdowns reviewed by the officials. The first was a 27-yard reception by Ray Boudreaux in the second quarter and the second was Demarcus Davis’ 6-yard catch in the third quarter. After careful and one lengthy review, the officials confirmed the call on the field and both touchdowns stood. THROW THE BALL TO ME: • Lester Ricard obviously doesn’t play favorites when wanting to complete a pass. Last week, Ricard completed 16 passes to nine different receivers, including two completions to a pair of running backs and tight ends and the remaining five to Tulane wideouts. In the season opener at Houston, completed 14 passes to five different receivers. Tulane Football 2006 Tulane Game Notes THIS-N-THAT ABOUT TULANE: A win against LSU would... - Snap TU’s 14-game losing streak to the Tigers - Give the Green Wave its first win at Baton Rouge since 1982 - Give Tulane its first win vs. a national ranked opponent since defeating then 12th-ranked LSU at Tiger Stadium in 1982. - Give Tulane back-to-back wins over SEC teams for the first time since 1988 when the Wave dispatched Ole Miss (14-9) and Mississippi State (27-22) in consecutive weeks. - Give TU a 2-1 record for the second straight year and the 31st time in school - Give head coach Chris Scelfo his 35th career win A loss against LSU would... - Give Tulane a 1-2 record for the first time since 2004 - Extend Tulane’s 14-game losing streak to the Tigers - Extend Tulane’s eight-losing streak in Baton Rouge - Hand Tulane its 30th straight loss to a nationally ranked team FIRST IMPRESSIONS: • A total of six players have earned their first starts of their collegiate careers through the first two games. Last week, strong safety David Skeehan, a former walkon, and middle linebacker Evan Lee earned the starting nod. Four Green Wave players earned their first collegiate start against Houston in the season opener. Junior left guard Aryan Barto was the only first time starter on offense, while sophomores Sean Carney (DE), James Dillard (LB) and junior Louis Thomas (DB) were first time starters on defense. Big Plays Tulane produced seven “big” plays this season. Here is a look at all of them so far: Passing (5) - 20+ yards 55 yards .... Ricard to G. Ratliff (9/16) 50 yards .... Ricard to D. Davis (9/16) 49 yards .... Ricard to Forte (9/9) - TD 47 yards .... Ricard to B. King (9/16) - TD 27 yards .... Ricard to R. Boudreaux (9/16) - TD Rushing (3) - 20+ yards 27 yards .... Matt Forte (9/16) 26 yards .... Matt Forte (9/16) 22 yards .... Matt Forte (9/16) Kickoff Returns (0) - 30+ yards Punt Returns (0) - 20+ yards TIES THAT BIND: - Senior quarterback Lester Ricard originally signed with LSU out of high school and was a member of the team as a freshman in 2002, where he received a redshirt season. He transferred to Tulane the following season. - A total of three Green Wave plays call Baton Rouge home, including senior defensive end Taylor Bertin, junior defensive back O’Lindsey Brown and freshman linebacker Adam Kwentua. WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU? • Preston Brown picked up where he left last season. In the 2006 season opener at Houston, Brown caught Tulane’s first pass and finished the game with four catches for 32 yards with a long of 17 yards. Dating back to last season, Brown had caught a pass in 12 straight games and now has 51 career receptions for 762 yards and six touchdowns. However, his streak was snapped at Mississippi State as he was held catchless by the Bulldog defense. Not bad for a player, who had never caught a collegiate pass prior to his junior season. He spent his freshman and sophomore campaign primarily on special teams before having a breakout season a year ago with 47 receptions for 720 yards to lead the team in both categories. WELCOME TO COLLEGE FOOTBALL: • A total of 13 Green Wave players made the first collegiate appearances of their careers against Houston, including nine true freshmen and four redshirt freshman. The red-shirt players include Chris Dunn (WR), David Kirksey (LB), John Landa (OL) and James McMurchy (LB). The nine newcomers were Travis Burks (DB), Chinonso Echebelem (DB), Logan Kelly (DE), Adam Kwentua (LB), Josh Mitzel (LB), Oscar Ponce de Leon (DT), Cody Sparks (DE), Ross Thevenot (K) and Alex Wacha (CB). TULANE FACES SEVEN BOWL TEAMS IN 2006: • Tulane will face one of the most difficult schedules in school history and perhaps the most demanding in college football this season with seven opponents who participated in bowl games a year ago. In non-conference action, TU faces Auburn (Citrus Bowl), LSU (Peach Bowl), and Conference USA rivals Houston (Fort Worth Bowl), Southern Miss (New Orleans Bowl), Tulsa (Liberty Bowl), UTEP (GMAC Bowl) and UCF (Hawai’i Bowl). The seven 2006 opponents combined for a 3-4 postseason record. www.TulaneGreenWave.com 5 Tulane Game Notes BROWN, HARRIS NAMED TEAM CAPTAINS FOR 2006 SEASON: • Senior receiver Preston Brown and junior defensive lineman Antonio Harris were selected by their teammates as the team cocaptains for the 2006 campaign. Brown is a three-year letterman and returning starter for the Green Wave. Last season, he started all 11 games and recorded 47 receptions for 720 yards and six touchdowns. Harris is a two-year letterman, who has started all 22 games of his career. He earned CollegeFootballNews.com Conference USA Freshman of the Year honors in 2004 and is a preseason all-conference selection in 2006. Marshall for the second straight year in 2006. Although Tulane is one of six teams remaining in Conference USA, the new divisional alignment of the 12-team all-sports league means that the Green Wave will face only two of the same league opponents in 2006 -USM and Houston. TULANE TO PLAY TWO NATIONAL TELEVISION GAMES THIS SEASON: • Currently, Tulane is slated to play two nationally televised games this season with both contests coming during Conference USA action. CSTV will carry the live broadcast of TU’s home opener against SMU on Sept. 30 and at Marshall on Nov. 4. ROUTE NAMED TO COLLEGEFOOTBALLNEWS.COM PRESEASON SQUAD: • Senior Israel Route was named to the CollegeFootballNews. com Preseason All-Conference USA Second Team as a defensive back. A three-year letterman and returning starter out of Stone Mountain, Ga., Route was Tulane’s top tackler from a year ago when he posted 40 stops, including two and half tackles behind the line of scrimmage totaling six yards lost. He also excelled on special teams as a returner, where he tallied 181 yards on 18 punt returns and added 512 yards on 23 kickoff returns in 2005. HARRIS NAMED TO C-USA PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM: • Tulane junior Antonio Harris was named to the preseason AllConference USA Team following a vote of league head coaches. Harris, a defensive lineman from Shreveport, La., was the Green Wave’s top tackler on the defensive line as a sophomore and the second-leading returning tackler overall. TOGETHER AGAIN: • The Green Wave coaching staff returns intact for the third straight season in 2006. The staff includes three coaches who have been with Chris Scelfo for the duration of his Tulane tenure in Garrett Chachere, Frank Scelfo and Don Mahoney. THE LONG HAUL: Now in his eighth season at the helm of the Tulane program, Chris Scelfo is the longest-tenured coach at Tulane (in seasons) since Andy Pilney, who coached the Wave for eight years from 195461. In addition to Pilney, only Hall-of-Famer Clark Shaughnessy (1915-20, 1922-26) with 11, coached more seasons than Scelfo’s eight. Only three previous Tulane coaches -- Shaughnessy with 59, and Bernie Bierman (1927-31) and Red Dawson (1936-41) with 36 -- have won more games at Tulane than Scelfo’s 33. Among C-USA coaches, Scelfo ranks third in longevity behind Southern Miss’ Jeff Bower (14 seasons), and UAB’s Watson Brown (10). CONFERENCE USA 2006: Tulane was selected to finish in fifth place among the West Division teams in the 2006 Conference USA Preseason Coaches Poll. Defending division and overall conference champion, Tulsa, was picked to finish first in the West Division, while UCF, was selected repeat as the East Division champion.
