Hospital System Heroes
For the month of December the following Nobles have sponsored children into the
Shrine Hospitals. If your name has never appeared in this column, consider getting
involved. It will not only change your life, but will be a life changing experience for
a child and his family.

If you are a member of Ararat Shrine you are encouraged to call the Hospital
Transportation Office (816) 923-5429 or (816) 923-1319 and become one of those
men who transport our children to the St. Louis Hospital. This will be one of the
most rewarding activities you will ever experience.
We encourage every man in Ararat to become a driver. It will require you
to go to your State Driver’s License Office and obtain a copy of your driving
record. As a matter of fact, all drivers need to bring their records up to date in this
manner.

I
n 2007, Joshua Jones from Grain Valley was involved in a grease fire in his home
and was very severely burned. He was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital where
it was felt he would not survive his burns. The Ararat Hospital Committee was
quickly contacted and Air Ambulance
immediately took him and his mother,
Jennifer, who was also badly burned,
to the Cincinnati Hospital. The Burn
Team gave urgent care and his life was
spared. Weeks later he was released
from the Hospital and returned to
Kansas City in the Ararat Shrine Hospital Van. Joshua healed very well and
in 2009 played on the Grain Valley
football team, first string.
The van drivers remember the
patients we take to and from the hospitals and continue to see them from
time to time. One of the drivers from
this trip remembered Joshua and this
year became a Secret Santa giving him
a $100 gift card from Wal-Mart. The
van driver does not wish to give his
name, which is common for van drivers, but his actions show the caring all Shriners have for our patients and all children
who need help. It is a real privilege to be able to assist these children by driving them
to the hospitals and in any other way we can.

“Masonic Relations” team. This team
will be lead by our own Recorder RWB

Nobles “in the loop.”
And heading up the most challenging job in all of Shrinedom is Bruce
Brosko our Restoration Chairman. The
members of this team are the real heroes
of our Shrine. Their finesse, skill and
ability to understand the distressed Noble is an art form. This team is seasoned,
compassionate and bears a burden for
us all. They do the tough work! They
help find ways for our past members to
regain membership. This is where the
Distressed Noble’s fund helps!

pouring. Slowly pour the wine into the decanter, keeping the bottle perpendicular to
the light. Watch carefully for sediment. Stop pouring as soon as sediment is seen in
the neck of the bottle. Serve the wine soon after decanting to avoid oxidation.
Don’t throw away that last bit of sediment-filled wine. You can cook with it.
It’s a lot simpler to decant a young wine to aerate it. Simply pour it into the
decanter and let it stand for about 20 minutes to bring out the complex flavors and
soften harsh tannins and high-alcohol aromas. Some of the more full-bodied varietals, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, or Zinfandel, can take up to an hour or more to
mellow. A wide-bottomed decanter works best for aerating wines.
Not all red wines need aeration; notable exceptions include Beaujolais, Pinot
Noir, and Norton. It is also unnecessary to aerate most white wines, although rich
Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer can benefit.

Nobody Told Me!

O
nce upon a time, in a galaxy far away and long ago, I started writing a series
of articles intended for recently created Nobles. Over the years, the series has
changed its focus and become a way to answer questions from all nobles, some
of whom have belonged to Ararat for 10 or more years. They still find things that nobody ever told them. It’s been about 8 years since that first article, and almost 5 years
since the last re-hash, so it may be time to recycle a few columns.
This column is intended to help the guys that don’t know everything about this
great organization, don’t understand why it is great, how it works, what we do, when we
do it, where we do it, or how we do it.
Today, we’ll cover the organization of our Temple’s leadership. The leadership
cadre of the local Shrine organization is a progressive line of about fourteen Nobles,
who have committed themselves to a lot of work on behalf of the Temple. Actually, only
eight are part of a “progressive” line; the others do not “move up” at the new year. The
seven non-progressive Divan Members, the Treasurer, Recorder, Director, Chaplain,
Marshal, Captain of the Guard, and Outer Guard, are elected or appointed to one-year
terms in their respective offices. They do not progress to the next higher office each year
when a new Potentate is installed.
The top five members of the Divan, the Potentate, Chief Rabban, Assistant Rabban, High Priest and Prophet, and Oriental Guide, are elected each year at the Annual
Meeting of the Temple. As a general rule, the advancement is pretty nearly automatic,
although the Nobility can replace any one of them through the elective process. In
practice, it is very difficult to convince the nobility to reject a Noble that has spent many
years in leadership of the Shrine, although others have been known to run against a
Divan member for a position. The Treasurer and Recorder are also elected each year.
The seven elected members of the Divan constitute the Temple’s Board of Directors in
accordance with the bylaws of the Imperial Council. The Potentate serves as the equivalent of Chairman of the Board.
Two members of the progressive Divan are appointed by the Potentate each year.
Those two are the First Ceremonial Master and the Second Ceremonial Master. The
Captain of the Guard, the Outer Guard, the Marshal, the Director, and the Chaplain also
serve at the pleasure of the Potentate, but do not advance, and frequently serve more than
one year in a single office. The incoming Potentate always appoints one new member of
the Divan, the Second Ceremonial Master, each year. He may also appoint a Noble to
replace any other member of the appointive Divan for any reason, or for no reason. The
power to appoint the lower seven members of the Divan rests solely with the Potentate.
Of the non-progressive Divan, the Recorder and Treasurer are elected each year by
the Nobility at the Annual Meeting. Any Noble in good standing may run against an incumbent in these offices at his own volition. The Director, Captain of the Guard, Outer
Guard, Marshal, and Chaplain are appointed by the Potentate, and he alone is responsible for the appointment. On occasion, the Potentate will add someone to the Divan,
such as the Membership Chairman, or he may create an entirely new Divan position.
The Divan operates much like the line of any other organization. Financial matters
are under the watchful eye of the “Board of Directors,” which is defined by the Imperial
By-laws as the elected Divan officers: Potentate, Chief Rabban, Assistant Rabban, High
Priest & Prophet, Oriental Guide, Treasurer, and Recorder. The Potentate is the CEO
of Ararat. He makes the decisions, but he depends on the other Divan members for guidance and counsel. He also delegates tasks, responsibility and authority to other Divan
members, and sometimes to ordinary Nobles. He is the one who must give permission
for everything that happens under the name or symbols of Ararat Shrine.
The Annual Ararat Shrine Circus is delegated to the Chief Rabban, who, in turn,
delegates tasks to others to make the Circus a success. It is only fitting that the Chief
Rabban be in charge here, because the proceeds of the Circus make up a good portion of
the budget for his year as Potentate.
The Assistant Rabban is in charge of the Auto Swap Meets. He, too, calls on many
of us, Divan and Nobility alike, to make them a success. The Swap Meets are a very important part of the annual operating budget for Ararat Shrine.
In the absence of a Chaplain, the High Priest and Prophet is in charge of the spiritual
www.araratshrine.com well-being of the Temple. The Oriental Guide is responsible for tending to the altar and
overseeing the ballot box during voting on petitions and at elections. The Treasurer
watches over the finances of our temple including our operating funds, investments, and
our reserved and committed funds.
The Recorder oversees all of the fraternal aspects of our temple. He is also responsible for accounting for the receipts and disbursements of the Temple and for filing the
many reports that are required.
The First and Second Ceremonial Masters are in charge of the planning and execution of our ceremonials, where new Nobles are created and introduced to the mysteries
and wonders of the Shrine. The Director directs the activities of Ararat Temple and is
in charge of the Second Section of Ceremonials. The Marshal is the escort for visitors,
“marshals” the Divan and the Nobility into the right place at the appropriate times, and
conducts visiting nobles and those wishing to address the Nobility to the Potentate.
The Captain of the Guard tends the Inner Door during tiled meetings while the
Outer Guard acts as a Tyler at the Outer Door. The Chaplain is the spiritual leader and
counselor for the Temple. He offers prayer, helps us remember the departed, and keeps
us on the moral path. In essence, he watches over all of us. Most of the Divan members
serve as Liaison officers to several Units and Clubs, and all of them are responsible for
“other duties as assigned.” Each of them is required to always hold the best interests of
Ararat and the Shrine uppermost in their actions and decisions.
The Divan is a group of Nobles who work tirelessly for the good of the Temple, and
they do it all for the love of the Shrine. They are not paid, nor do they get an expense account. Occasionally, they get a free meal from a Unit or Club, and sometimes, when they
are required to go to a conference, the Imperial Shrine pays part of the tab. Sometimes
the Temple pays a part of the Nobles travel expenses. On the other hand, the Noble pays
for travel, lodging, meals, and all of the dresses for his Lady.
All in all, the Divan is a group of Nobles that give up at least seven years and a
pocketful of money to the benefit of Ararat. They do it for free, because they love the
Shrine, and because they are willing to shoulder an immense responsibility. They are
your friends.

January Temple Meeting

I
llustrious Sir Kevin Sleyster called the January, 2011,
meeting to order at 7:35 PM in the Frank S. Land
Ballroom.
The Assistant Rabban informed the Captain of
the Guard of the impending proceedings, with no help
from the audience, and he did it perfectly!
The Chief Rabban visually surveyed the audience
and informed the Potentate that all present were members of the Shrine and that we were properly guarded.
The Divan was resplendent in full business attire.
Oriental Guide Wayne Spencer Prepared the Altar.
Chaplain Loyd Gentry gave the Invocation and
remembered our Nobles who had been visited by the
Black Camel.
The Legion of Honor presented the colors.
Our National Anthem was presented by Noble
Jesse Pringle, who is also a professional performer. His
stage name is Ome’. Many nobles joined him in singing
the anthem.
The reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting was omitted, as usual.
Illustrious Sir Kevin presented game jerseys of
Johnnie Robinson and Jerrell Wilson to Mr. Bob
Moore, Kansas City Chiefs Team Historian, for exhibition in the Chiefs’ Hall of Fame. Both Robinson and
Wilson were Nobles of Ararat Shrine. The jerseys had
been displayed in Ararat’s Trophy Cases for many years.
One of the jerseys was decorated with grass stains from
the natural grass that once graced the playing field at
Arrowhead Stadium.
There were no Petitions for Creation. Three transfers by demit were accepted by secret ballot. There
were six Restorations.
Treasurer Dan Smothers reported that receipts,
through the end of 2010, income exceeded disbursements, and we still have money. The report was approved.
After presentation of the Treasurer’s Report, Noble
Dan announced his resignation from the office of Treasurer, and his appointment to the position of Marshal.
His resignation was accepted.
Recorder Mike Wheeler read a memorial to Dr.
F.T. “Hogan” H’Doubler, Jr., Past Imperial Potentate,
who was recently visited by the Black Camel.
The Ballroom Dance Shrine Club presented a
check to the General Fund. The donation represented
proceeds from dances held in Bennett Auditorium.
Noble Jim Nooning made another donation to the
Cornerstone Fund commemorating the purchase of a
new car by Noble Steve Dowdy.
Potentate-Elect B. J. Richardson announced the
following Divan appointments:

The 2011 Divan Officers were installed by Illustrious Sir John Hay, P. P., assisted by Illustrious Sir Paul
Black, P.P. Illustrious Sir Kermit Bright, P.P., presented
a Past Potentate’s fez to Illustrious Sir Kevin Sleyster,
who then spoke briefly. He was then escorted to his new
seat on the end of the Past Potentates’ row. Illustrious
Sir John Hay then presented the Potentate’s fez to Illustrious Sir B. J. Richardson.
Ararat’s Pipe and Drums piped the new Potentate
to his station and revealed the Potentate’s Slogan for
2011, “The Future is Ours to Change.”
Illustrious Sir B. J. then took over the meeting, and
Noble Bill Dean stepped forward and announced that
B. J. was the Potentate of Ararat Shrine who is a Native American. He presented a ceremonial fan of eagle
feathers in recognition of his heritage. Ownership of
genuine eagle feathers is prohibited to all except persons of Native American heritage.
Illustrious Sir B. J. spoke briefly discussing some of the things
that we need to change in 2011.
He also announced that he would
undergo knee replacement surgery
on January 13.

The appointment of Noble Mike Allen as Interim
Treasurer was announced. An election will be held at
the March Temple meeting.
Noble Buck Johnson reported that the Bingo
Games continue to contribute to the Temple General
Fund, and the players continue to support the Telemedicine operation. The December contribution was back
to the level we have come to expect, and the players’
contribution was scattered to the four corners of the
stage. There was no shortage of Divan members who
were anxious to retrieve the money.
Noble Buck also announced “Pull Tab Bonanza,”
to be held on the first Saturday each month, starting
on March 5. It’s a bit of a cross between pull tabs and
bingo, with a bit of horse race thrown in. You buy pull
tabs to try to fill a bingo card line. The pull tabs have
red, white, and blue horses on them, so you can bet on
the horses, too. Prizes up to $1,000.00 will be offered. It
will take place only on the first Saturday of each month.
Hospital Chairman Ed Stowell said that our Telemedicine operation has been very busy and quite successful, with 16 St. Louis patients and 32 Cincinnati
patients served. Our van drivers have made 122 trips
this year, and 144 drivers have participated. In 2010,
we transported 339 patients by van, and 104 patients
by air. Fifty-six Nobles of Ararat sponsored 99 patients
in 2010. Ararat Nobles donated 3,028 hours for work
in the Hospital Office, and 406 for hospital activities
outside the Temple.
Membership Chairman Rod McGrath gave another great pep talk, announcing several new opportunities
for everyone.
A special election for Temple Treasurer will be held
at our March 9 meeting. The Potentates Ball is scheduled for March 26 at the Grand Ballroom at Bartle Hall.
The Annual Mardi Gras Party will be March 12, and
our Spring Ceremonial is scheduled for May 21.
The Half-n-Half drawing was won by High Priest
& Prophet Wayne Spencer, who donated his winnings
to the 2011 Circus.
The Benediction was given by Chaplain Loyd
Gentry, and the meeting was adjourned at 9:05 PM.

n February of each year Needle Guild celebrates Founder’s Day. In February 1937 the “Ararat Shrine
Sewing Circle” was organized by the Potentate’s Lady, Mrs. Herb “Babe” Ford. There were no funds
available so each lady donated $1 and Mrs. Ford donated 5 second-hand sewing machines
In 1942 and 1943 the ladies, in addition to sewing on two Tuesdays for the Shrine, volunteered to
sew on two more Tuesdays for the Red Cross. The ladies had benefit parties and many Uniformed Units
gave funds.
In 1947 Potentate Chet Hayes changed the name to Ararat Shrine Needle Guild and presented a
gold and black plaque with the new name and Shrine emblem.
Through the years, the Needle Guild has depended on donations, both monetary and material to
continue to provide the hospitals with the necessary items they requested. We need your help to keep
sewing for the kids! With the help of outlying sewing clubs, we provide the hospitals with quilts, pillows,
book bags, laundry bags, toy bags, therapy balls, favors, and stuffed toys (especially Raggedy Ann and
Andy dolls). We also sew lap robes, afghans, robes, pajamas, IV gowns, shorts, tops, sweat suits, dresses,
pants, and shirts of all sizes from size 4 to Adult

bout a year ago I wrote about 3 Ladies making the trip from St. Louis to join
our Court, and that they were forming a club, with the hopes of establishing a
Court in the St. Louis area within the next two years. Well they
have reached the required membership goal, and the Institution of Nailah Court
#107 will be held in St. Louis, February 18th and 19th, 2011!! It is wonderful to
see our organization grow. The officers of Tarrara Court #83 will be traveling to St.
Louis to assist in the Institution and to perform the Initiation Ceremony. We know
there will be over 50 Ladies to initiate as charter members. WOW!

The Unit Meet held last October was a great success, and was capped off by
the official visit of Lady Jennie Crawford GHP, who is from Sarasota, Florida. She
encouraged us to be a legacy starter for our organization, by sharing LOS with our

Crawford, GHP also visited Ararat Shrine, along with several Ladies for a dinner, and
Telemedicine Room presentation and tour, which we all enjoyed very much.
Lady Jennie Crawford, Grand High Priestess, also shared with us her Special
Project for 2010-2011: “Microbionics, or Smart Hand/Smart Foot technology”
which are advanced prosthetics and implants that together use “phantom” nerve
signals to work. The prosthetics are also more life-like, and include new abilities to
assist with stair climbing, balance, and individual thumb and index finger movement. We are all looking forward to May, when we will meet with Lady Jennie again,
along with LOS ladies from all over the US and Canada to renew friendships, and
make new ones while we further the work of our organization.
Please note: Our regular monthly Dinner at East Gate Lodge will be held in February on Sunday the 13th from 11 AM – 1 PM. This is a change for one month only,
so we can attend the Institution of Nailah Court mentioned above. March Dinner
will be on the 20th, and April on the 17th. Please come out and enjoy a great meal

Greeter News

W
ith the start of the New Year, like everyone else, it is out with the old and
in with the new in the Greeters Realm. Past President Jerry and Lady Jan
Hess finished out the year with one awesome Fall Formal, with the help
of Polly and Gabe Buser. With fancy decorations, an outstanding DJ and a special
Greeters glass gift it was the Greeter Event of the year. We send many thanks for
I
just became a Shriner in the Fall Ceremonial and didn’t dream I would become
involved as a club officer this soon. Having been in Amateur Radio for over 30
years, I guess it was just a matter of time before these two paths were to cross. In
this day of cell phones and instant communication alternatives, Amateur Radio is
something that is easy to overlook, but it also offers a variety of avenues that can
be pursued. I have talked to other hams in Europe and Asia from my vehicle as
well as talking through one of several satellites available for Ham Operators use
throughout the day.
There is a lot of good that can be done and peoples lives that you can touch
by being a Shriner. The same can be said for Amateur Radio. In the 7 years before
I moved back to my native Missouri, I spent time as a volunteer first responder
for local emergency management. In that time, I helped with the aftermath of a
tornado, a flood, an ice storm and a commercial jet crash. In all cases, Amateur
Radio was the one means of communication that was consistent when nothing else
would work.
With the number of members currently in Ararat, even if only a small portion
were to get their licenses, we could reach out to a wider area than most of the clubs
I am aware of in the KC Metro area can do, and increase the visibility of being a
Shriner. This is not meant to compete with the other Amateur Radio Clubs but
rather to complement them.
A common area where ham radio operators help out is with the running of
various 5K/10K races where on the surface they report the progress of the runners
along the route but even more importantly get help where it is needed when an
emergency arises. We have two great repeaters. If you have a radio scanner, plug
in 145.13 and 443.775 and give a listen. You will usually hear me on one of them
during the morning and afternoon drive times. If you are interested in getting your
license, please get in touch with me or any member of the Amateur Radio Club.
You will find someone who will be happy to get you on your way. If there is enough
interest, we can put on a class or help with questions if you want to pursue the self
study route.
With the upcoming Hambash in April, you have plenty of time to study and
take your test at Hambash. If that is too soon, as a Volunteer Examiner, I can help
coordinate an exam session at Ararat to help you in that way at a later date. There
will also be a presentation at Hambash on using the Amateur Radio satellites that
you might want to attend. If your club or unit would like a presentation on Amateur
Radio, please let me know and I will be glad to do one at your next meeting.

keeping him focused, his Lady Debbie also deserves congratulations.
The Greeters are a far better organization because of the Nobles and Ladies
mentioned above and the ones that stand in the wings supporting the organization.

Ararats

I
t’s hard to believe that we are already into February of 2011. Last month was an
uneventful month for the Mini Model T’s, but that also means that no one is ill and
that we are all going to see one another again at the monthly meeting this month.
Our February meeting will mark the first meeting of our new officers. They are of
course the same ones as last year. The good news is that we had a pretty good year.
Our February meeting, held in the Truman Room at 7:00 pm on Wednesday
the second is a must for the entire unit. We have many things to discuss, including
the changes to the by-laws. There are some proposals that should help the unit gain
some members. Please make plans to be there for this one.
Looking ahead to the parade season this year we are going to need help. The
same 6 members show up for every parade. There are more members than that in the
unit. We need to see some of the other members to be present. We are also looking
for new members for the unit. If you would like to have a good time at the parades
and ride the parade route instead of walk, give us a call and we will be sure that you
meet everyone in the unit so you can see if you would like to spend more time with
us. We have a good time with the entire family at our functions and we would like to
share the fun with more members.

our Director, or Jamie Blackburn, our President and set up a time to come by and
visit.

ttention! Attention! Attention! Please pay attention to important information
concerning your Ararats and changes to their place and dates of their forthcoming performances.
The Ararats are no longer going to be performing at the Blue Springs American
Legion Hall!! Our Director, Bill Dean, Sr. together with our Illustrious Potentate,
B.J. Richardson, have devised an outstanding program for all of our Ararat families
and also open to some of our outside friends to participate in.
Now hear this!!! Beginning February 18, 2011, your Ararats are moving their
regular dance parties to Rooms A&B at Ararat Shrine. The band will perform from
7:00 pm to 9:00 pm on the 3rd Friday of each month.
Now, a really good part of all this is, you can come to your Shrine Temple at 6:00
pm, have a nice dinner in your Ararat Restaurant, which won’t cost you an arm and
a leg. The food is delicious and the price is very reasonable. Then you can enjoy the
rest of the evening listening to or dancing to the finest music you can hear anywhere,
in good ole Kansas City.
My friends, this is an excellent way to support your temple while really having
an enjoyable evening out. So mark it on your calendar right now so you won’t forget.
Better yet, call your neighbors and friends that you party with, and help our Potentate “Illustrious B.J.” bring back the spirit to Ararat Shrine.

Blue Springs Shrine Club

reetings from our super active group of dedicated Nobles and Ladies
that comprise the Blue Springs Shrine Club, and a special greeting
from our hard working President, Noble Bill Fickle.
I talked to Noble Bill last evening and got the low down on some of the
activities that he has in the works for our club in 2011.
Before I get into that portion of the news, I want to tell all of you some
of the facts about our Blue Springs Shrine Club.
Right now, today, our club attendance is around 50 Nobles and Ladies. Our club has room for around 100 in what they call the Lantern Room,
so we have room to grow. I say that because we don’t want to scare off any
of you nice folks that may think we don’t have room for you. The answer to
this is, “yes we do.” So, here’s how you do it!!!! All you new Nobles and Ladies just look in your Ararat Shrine Calendar of Events Book under Shrine
Clubs for Blue Springs Shrine Club. You will see listed our officers’ phone
numbers. All you have to do is pick up the phone and talk to one of these
charming gentlemen, and they will give you the low down about when, how,
where our club meets, and all the particulars you need to know about us.
Come see for yourself. You’ll be glad you did.

Provost News

A
t the time of this writing we have had some super cold
weather. My wish for anyone who works outside is
warmer temperatures soon. For anyone that has been
dealing with stress or health problems, the very best to you
and God bless you.
Valentine’s Day will soon be here. Sure hope that it
is the best ever for all our Provost Nobles and their Ladies.
It has been mentioned that it would be nice to have one
member of our team highlighted every month. For example,
write a short bio of that person and if possible have their picture. Anyone wishing to offer suggestions for this can email
me at [email protected]. Through the years some
individuals have really had a huge impact on the Provost team
and others are just getting started. Everyone’s role is important and your input on this idea is important.
The person having a huge impact on me was the
late Leo Stine. Leo was the Noble that brought me in to the
Provost. I was selling mobile homes on 40 Highway in Independence, not too far from Paul Brewer’s business, when
I met Leo Stine. There were some old junkers out back, and
people would look at them for parts, like a furnace, windows
for a shed, etc. Leo had driven back there several times, but
never stopped at the office. Once when he was on his way
out, I stopped him and asked if I could help and invited him
inside where it was cool. When we realized we both belonged
to Ararat, he wanted to know what Club or Unit I was with.
I said none, and he began to tell me about the Provost. After
that he came by almost every Tuesday wearing his uniform
and invited me to join. He was a Captain then, and worked
the West door. I did join, and since I didn’t have an assignment, I stayed with him at the West door on Tuesday evenings. Leo knew everyone who came in, and always greeted
them with a smile.
After a month or so, I was asked if I would drive the patrol car on Tuesday evenings, and Red Cox started training
me. After he was confident that I could work alone, he began
working inside again. I believe the Mounted Guard met on
Tuesday evenings, and their ladies always brought treats for
the meetings. Man, were those some great desserts. I always
managed to radio the front desk and let them know I would
be out of the car after that. Leo managed to get some too, and
laughed when I came through the door.
I attended my first Swap Meet that year in April, and it
was a real cold weekend. Leo had an old Suburban, and said
I could stick with him. He parked at one of the intersections,
and we stayed warm. He asked if I had gotten a badge yet
for the black and white uniform, and I hadn’t. He knew of
a Noble who had passed, and also the person who had the
badge. True to his word he brought it to me later. I will always
treasure that badge.
Leo, Leonard Huff, and I often ate together at the corner
table in the restaurant, and we would laugh so loud that we
had to be told to lower it. Those were some wonderful times.
Although Leo is no longer there, I can still picture him at the
West door.
On January 14, 2011 we lost a valued member of the Provost, Harvey Mansfield. Our condolences go out to his family.
In next month’s article I plan to share some special memories
I have of Harvey.

Northland Shrine Club News

ello Nobles and Ladies. If you are a Northlander we need YOU. We are a great
bunch of guys with a WONDERFUL wives group who meet once a month for
Good Food and Fellowship.
On January 4th we had our regular meeting at the VFW in Claycomo (right there
beside Stroud’s) Yes that’s right; we are back at our old stomping grounds. We started the
evening with a busy social hour and then had an excellent fried chicken dinner with all the
trimmings, including some wonderful gravy with mashed taters umm, umm good. Next
month at Everett’s request we are going to have home made meat loaf.
President White opened the meeting at 7:00 PM with the following introductions:
For the last time as he is now retired RWB Dave Dowell, Past District Deputy
Grand Master for the 18th Masonic District. I really believe it is important to recognize
the hard work done by our Masonic leaders cause we wouldn’t be anywhere without the
Blue Lodge.
Ambassador Howard Silvers, who was being a bachelor as his bride was enjoying the
Florida sunshine.
Assistant Shrine Club Director Art Kinder and his lovely Lady Janet. Congratulations to Art for obtaining his 50 Year pin from the Grand Lodge. Thanks for your time
and service to our cause Sir.
Noble Bert Torrey led us in prayer and then Noble Dave Dowell led us in the Pledge
of Allegiance. The lovely Mrs. Hoesly then did her magic with the drawing for a dinner
at Red Robin. Thanks for all your work on that project and congratulations to our lucky
winner Mrs. Everett Diebler. Our ladies then slipped off to their own meeting

new year of parades. We have been invited back to the Snake Saturday Parade and want

to have the Float ready to roll by then. Thanks Howard for all your work on the truck
and the Float.
We discussed our finances and we really have to get some work in this year in fundraisers or we are not going to be happy campers. We need everybody’s ideas and help so
come to the next meeting for a good discussion.
Noble Torrey and his Audit Committee reported and we are in good shape on our
paperwork. Quartermaster Ron says he has shirts, caps and coats if you need one just
see him at the next meeting. We also discussed the Officer’s Seminar on January 22nd,
and our Bingo Assignments at the Shrine on February 3rd. Thanks to ALL who were
there.
We truly miss not seeing many of our old friends from the club. If you haven’t been
to a meeting in a while come on back and see us. We miss your company and need you
to keep our club active and functional.
In Sickness this month we ask for prayers for Lloyd Newman and Charley Swafford who will both be undergoing surgery soon. Our best wishes for you both and hope
to see you soon.
Ambassador Silvers decided to let Assistant Director Kinder do the talking tonight
and Art was good enough to visit with us for several minutes about membership. It was
sad to hear that we lost over 200 members for nonpayment of dues. Remember 1 for 3
and let’s look to a good future.
Speaking of Parades and Circus don’t forget that the uniform has changed and we
are wearing our red shirts with navy blue pants. If you don’t have your shirt yet let us
know so we can get with our Quartermaster (Ron Owen) and get one for you.
Noble President White also asks if you can please make it to the Temple Meetings
and wear your Northland Shirt or Fez.
Again, if you want some good food and want to meet some good people come on
by our next meeting, February 8th at the VFW in Claycomo. Come join us for dinner
before the meeting and visit with old and new friends. Hope to see you There!!!

Sedalia Shrine Club

reetings to all of our Brothers and their Ladies and families in Shrinedom. May
your Creator richly bless, heal and watch over each and everyone of you. May
you seek His wisdom first in all your endeavors.
2010 saw a lot of fun events and shared camaraderie at the Sedalia Shrine Club. It
also gave us some serious insight into the future of our club. Our membership knows
or should know that Bingo is the Mother Goose of the Sedalia Shrine Club. It pays the
bulk of our financial needs. Player patronage has severely dropped and expenses have
not. Bingo is implementing necessary cost changes in its games as well as looking at new
games that might be more alluring to our playing public. We will be looking at several
ways to add needed revenue to the club. Please plan to attend or support the “Sedalia
Shrine Club with your volunteerism or your charitable monetary contribution to keep
this club alive.
Check the calendars at the club for upcoming Dances, Dinners, Raffles, Golf Tournaments and Bar Events. This is an urgent plea from the Sedalia Shrine Club and our
ability to contribute to the ongoing needs of our Children’s Hospitals.
Our President for 2011 Bill Walker, Vice President Larry Foster, Treasurer Chris
Wallen, and Secretary & Scribe Ron Hinkle wish you all the best in 2011 and sincerely
admonish you to be a volunteer. You will find no finer organization to be an active part of.
We congratulate our recipients of Shriner of the Year 2010 Awards: Bill Walker
and Stan Schierholz, and our Shrine Lady of the Year 2010 Award: Pat Rinehart. These
awards are bestowed on those volunteers who step above and beyond the duties they so
graciously volunteered for. Thank you for your efforts and sacrifices.
When you hit your knees, remember the families or Ray Hatfield and George Riley
who have departed from this world. We join these families in mourning their losses.
Keep Van White in your prayers as he continues to go through rehabilitation from a
stroke, and Francis Antoine as she rehabilitates at home from gall bladder surgery.
Remember all of the men and women in service to this great country.

O
ur first meeting of 2011 got off to a great start with very nice weather for us
up here in North Country! Nobles and Ladies numbered 22 and we were
honored to have not only our Ambassador Curt Karnes and Lady Susan,
but also Ararat Assistant Shrine Club Director Art Kinder and Lady Janet. We were
concerned to learn of some health problems that Director of Shrine Clubs, Charley
Swafford is having, and our prayers and best wishes go out to him and Lady Rose for
a speedy recovery. We also welcomed new Noble, Charlie Whitfield and his Lady.
As is the custom of our club, families from three different communities were
adopted for Christmas and our Treasurer, Lowrey Ford reported that when he delivered the $500.00 Wal-Mart gift cards to the surprised recipients, he was greeted
with tears of gratitude and joy.
The club is anxiously awaiting Spring, and thinking about our “onion sales.” We
did quite well last year and hope to order a few more bags than last year.
Harvey Ballenger is contacting the Missouri Masonic Home for a speaker for
our April meeting. If you can help, call Harvey at 816-296-3460.
The next meeting will be February 7 at Catricks Café in Lawson. See you there!

T
he Lafayette County Shrine Club met January 13 at The Victorian Peddler in
Lexington. There were 24 Lafayette County Shriners and Ladies present for
the meal. President Delmar Dothage welcomed Ambassador Curt Karnes and
his Lady, Susan; former Ambassador Ken Sizemore, and his Lady, Mary; and our new
Liaison Officer Dan Smothers.
President Dothage presided at the meeting. The reading of the minutes from
the November meeting was read by W.N. Gray, Secretary. The December meeting
minutes were dispensed with since they were in the Ararat Shrine News. The Treasurer’s Report was also given.
Tim Rechterman reported on a girl with scoliosis who he referred to the Shrine
Hospital.
Ambassador Karnes reported on upcoming events at the Ararat Temple which
includes the Officers’ Seminar on January 22 and the Potentate’s Ball on March 26.
Liaison Officer Smothers reported on Ararat Temple and Divan activities.
Nobles in distress were remembered. Mark Schroer reported on Clinton
Lieneke and Bill Eastridge who are both on the road to recovery. Junior O’Dell had
his surgery and is doing well and Virgie Stratton had back surgery and is still in the
hospital. Cards will be sent to all.
