DAY 1 -- ARRIVE PARO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT.
Welcome to Paro. The last 15 minutes or so is amazing with snow covered peaks jutting majestically out of the
clouds and then mountains either side as Druk Air zooms down the valley getting lower and lower and closer to the
airport. On the view are settlements on the ground, the bare paddy fields, the meandering tracks, the river and
streams, the trees and finally the town of Paro and the International Airport. Located at an elevation of
approximately 2200 meter above sea level, this airport sometimes is called as “straight out of the fairy tales”.
DRIVE TO THIMPHU:
Thimphu, the capital town of Bhutan. During this drive, you will pass through idyllic countryside giving some idea
about what you might come across on your journey in the next 5 days. Thimphu (2,280m) is a small, bustling city in
the heart of the Himalaya. Thimphu’s charm comes not only from its wealth of museums or places of historic
interest, but also from the strong national character of its architectural style. Arrive Thimphu and then transfer to
your hotel.
Afternoon Leisure walk in the City. Early evening visit the memorial Chorten. This large impressive monument with
its golden spire was built in 1974 to honor the memory of the third King, His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck (1928
– 1972).
Built by his mother Her Majesty the late Queen Ashi Phuntsho Choden Wangchuck, the whitewashed chorten is
decorated with richly carved annexes facing the four directions, and features elaborate mandalas, statues and a
shrine dedicated to the popular third king. There are numerous religious paintings and complex tantric statues
housed inside reflecting both peaceful and wrathful aspects of Buddhist deities. Throughout the day people
circumambulate the chorten, whirl the large red prayer wheels and pray in the adjacent shrine. The early morning
and evenings is particularly tranquil as elderly people shuffle in and spruced-up school kids whiz in and out to pay
homage.
Evening Free: Explore the city.
DINNER AT HOTEL:
DAY 2 – THIMPHU

13 traditional arts and crafts. Later visit Textile and Folk Heritage Museum, a fascinating testimony of
the Bhutanese material culture and living traditions. Then, visit the government-run Handicrafts
Emporium and local crafts shops, to browse through example of Bhutan's fine traditional arts. Here you
can buy hand-woven textiles, thangkha paintings, masks, ceramics, slate and wood carvings, jewelry,
interesting items made from local materials.
LUNCH OPEN: LOCAL RESTAURANTS CAN BE AN OPTION:
Evening drive past Tashichhoedzong, "fortress of the glorious religion". This is the center of government
and religion, site of monarch's throne room and seat of Je Khenpo or Chief Abbot. Built in 1641 by the
political and religious unifier of Bhutan, Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it was reconstructed in 1960s in
traditional Bhutanese manner, without nails or architectural plans.
DINNER AT HOTEL:
DAY 3 – DRIVE TO PARO-Day Excursion
Thimphu/ Paro (53 Km, 1 hour drive)
The beautiful valley of Paro encapsulates within itself a rich culture, scenic beauty and hundreds of myths and
legends. It is home to many of Bhutan's oldest temples and monasteries, National Museum and country's only
airport. Mount. Chomolhari (7,314m) reigns in white glory at the northern end of the valley and its glacial water
plunge through deep gorges to form Pa Chhu (Paro river). Paro is also one of the most fertile valleys in the
Kingdom producing a bulk of the locally famous red rice from its terraced fields.
Ta Dzong:
One time watch tower built to defend Rinpung Dzong during inter-valley wars of the 17th century, since 1967 Ta
Dzong is serving as the National Museum of the country. It holds fascinating collection of art, relics, religious
thangkha paintings and Bhutan's exquisite postage stamps. The museum circular shape augments its varied
collection displayed over several floors.
RinpungDzong:
Built in 1646 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal , the first spiritual and temporal ruler of Bhutan, the Dzong houses
the monastic body of Paro, the office of the Dzongda (district administrative head) and Thrimpon (judge) of Paro
district. The approach to the Dzong is through a traditional covered bridge called Nemi Zam. A walk through the
bridge, over a stone inlaid path, offers a good view of the architectural wonder of the Dzong as well as life around
it. It is also the venue of Paro Tshechu, held once a year in the spring. Also visit the farm House.
DAY 4 – THIMPHU – EXPLORE THE OUTSKIRTS OF THIMPHU VALLEY:
DRIVE TO BEGANA aka DODENA:
Around approximately 45 minutes(15 km) drive up north of Thimphu, Dodena valley which is the end of the
driving road. The roads of modern times literally come to an end here. Jigme Dorji National park starts or
ends there. Also Dodena is the starting or ending point of one of the most popular treks in Bhutan, The
Jumolhari Trek. If one wishes then a hike, which can take a little more than an hour, can be organized to Cheri
Monastery which is now a major teaching and retreat center of the Southern Drukpa Kagyu sect. The
Monastery serves as the monastic school for study of Buddhist Philosophy, metaphysics, mathematics, poets
and many other Buddhist studies. For non hikers the spot itself can be breathtaking and river side picnic can
also be organized.
Return to the city late in the afternoon or evening. Dinner in Hotel. Retire early for the morning flight.
