Adult Studies at The Colburn School offers a diverse set of courses that
focus on deep exploration of music, the performing arts and LA culture.
Our robust, experiential courses attract passionate, life-long learners to
Colburn’s state-of-the-art campus, creating an enthusiastic and supportive
community for students at any level. With the busy Angeleno lifestyle in mind,
our courses take place on weeknights and weekends for your convenience.
Music Appreciation & Theory
Learn more about some of your favorite music, from Bach and Beethoven
to The Beatles. In our interactive courses, we bring together listeners and
performers to explore the concert experience. Students from the Colburn
Conservatory of Music will be on hand to provide their own musical insight.
For those invested in the inner workings of music, our theory and form courses
are taught by top scholars in the field.
Music Performance
Dust off your instrument or warm up your vocal cords, and experience
the joy of making music with performance-based classes for musicians
of all abilities and interests. Both group ensemble and semi-private
classes are available.
Dance, Yoga & Pilates
Enjoy bringing your body into harmonious alignment while increasing strength
and flexibility with our courses in dance, yoga and pilates. A number of classes
in ballet and tap are offered each week, specifically designed for your level of
expertise. All classes are paid for through the purchase of individual sessions,
allowing you to drop in whenever your schedule permits.
Private Instruction
Individual instruction from beginning through advanced levels is offered on
orchestral instruments, piano, saxophone, guitar, voice, and music theory.

Five Symphonies That Changed Music
Masterpieces of Western Music
Brian Lauritzen | 6-Week Course | $235 | Fall
Join KUSC’s Brian Lauritzen for six classes that dive
deeply into five of the greatest symphonies ever written.
In addition to analysis and discussions of historical and
cultural significance, Mr. Lauritzen will roll up his curatorial
sleeves and select a few local performances that enhance
the course, starting with Colburn’s own Conservatory
Orchestra in performance at the Ambassador Auditorium
in Pasadena on October 26th. Concert attendance is
not necessary for class participation. Ticket information
for each of the selected performances will be available
upon registration.
Doug Dutton | 12-Week Course | $350 | Fall & Spring
A survey of the acknowledged masterpieces of Western
Music from its origins to the present within an historical
and aesthetic framework. The spring semester will
continue the survey, including some of the lesser-known,
but equally worthy chamber music and solo masterworks
of Western Music. No prior technical musical expertise
is required.

Music and Activism
Brian Lauritzen | 6-Week Course | $235 | Spring
Join KUSC’s Brian Lauritzen as he unfolds the role
that music can play in activism. Whether it’s funding
for the arts, political implications, or even music’s role
in social justice, this course will explore the many ways
in which music has been part of the fight for a cause.
Supplemental field trips will accompany the course.
Field trips are in addition to class and are not necessary
for class participation. Additional information will be
available upon registration.

The Craft of Music & the Art of Listening
John Steinmetz | 6-Week Course | $235 | Fall
Every listener hears and responds differently to a piece
of music; every performer has a unique voice and
experience. When we come together to share music,
how can we get the most out of it? This course brings
together listeners and performers to explore the concert
experience, as well as preparation and performance.
Students from the Colburn Conservatory of Music will
be on hand to answer all your musical questions.

Workshop in Classical Music Presentation
John Steinmetz | 6-Week Course | $235 | Spring
Be a part of the artistic process in this exciting
new course. Each week students from the Colburn
Conservatory will give musically inspired performances
for the class followed by a deep discussion about the
topic being presented. The workshop atmosphere allows
the audience to get a behind the scenes glimpse of the
process and growth of each student.

Literature and Music

The interplay of literature and music is one of close and
enduring artistic connections. This class examines some
of its more powerful examples (with space for a bit of
humor along the way). Discussions will include Homer,
Aeschylus, Sophocles, Virgil, Dante, Shakespeare, Goethe,
besotted Romantics, and inebriated medievalists.

The Tone Poem
Doug Dutton | 6-Week course | $235 | Fall
An introduction to the hybrid form also known as the
symphonic poem, this combination of text and music
includes works by Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Strauss, Schoenberg,
and Rimsky-Korsakov.

Chamber Music from Trio to Octet
Doug Dutton | 6-Week course | $235 | Spring
There is no dearth of masterpieces in chamber music
literature: this course moves from trio, through quartet,
quintet, sextet, septet, and ends with a great octet in
this progressive survey of special repertoire.

Six Sacred Choral Masterpieces

An introduction and close examination of six monumental
masterpieces of choral literature, including works by
Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and Britten.

Auditions
Liz Kinnon | 13-Week Course | $400 | Fall & Spring
Learn common tools and strategies by analyzing the solos
of jazz masters, explore theory and harmony as it applies to
the jazz idiom, and gain the skills needed to improvise a solo.
Areas of study include: ear training, chord extensions, common
progressions and form. Prerequisites: Ability to read music,
strong knowledge of all major scales, key signatures, and triads.
Familiarity with 4-part chords strongly recommended. Jazz
Theory and Improv II will be offered in the spring.

Designed for those interested in exploring the elements that
comprise a piece of music. From simple folk songs to symphonic
repertoire, this course will discuss melody, harmony, form, and
rhythm. Prerequisite: Ability to read music.

Focusing on the music of Mozart, this course will guide you

repertoire in this large choral ensemble. Singers will have the
opportunity to perform in some of the finest choral venues in

Choral Singing for Beginners

An introduction to choral ensemble works for students who

music, and how to sing in harmony. The course will culminate in
a performance for family and friends. No audition required.

Join us for a family-friendly drumming ensemble that
emphasizes proper technique and good rhythmic reading.
Parents will have an opportunity to participate with their
children and work on pieces together. Although reading
music is not a prerequisite, the course is reserved for ages
12 and up. Note: This class requires a purchase of a drum in
addition to the cost of tuition.
