PARISHIONER REGISTRATION
MISSION STATEMENT OF THE
ST. MICHAEL FAITH COMMUNITY
If you would like to join the parish, please contact the
Rectory/Church office. Please remember to notify us if you
move or will be moving out of the parish. Registration, the
practice of stewardship, and regular participation in the
Sacraments indicate that a person is an active member of the
parish and is eligible to act as a godparent or sponsor. As a
Church community seeking to be faith-filled disciples and
good stewards, the sacrifice of our time, talent and treasure is
essential for the common good.
Extending a rich parish heritage built upon the pioneering
traditions of the first settlers of the Southern Allegheny
mountains, St. Michael the Archangel Parish embraces as its
mission the use of all available resources, both spiritual
and temporal, to minister to the needs of the people of
Hollidaysburg and its surrounding areas. We do this in a
fashion which reflects the teachings and example of Jesus
Christ, while promoting a tradition of liturgical excellence,
strong support for Catholic education in all its varieties, and
enlightened social outreach to the community at large, in union
with both the Diocesan and Universal Church.
CHRISTIAN INITIATION
Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Catholic
Church should contact the rectory office. New classes begin
in the Fall.
Liturgical Reflection
]
We are reminded that some who are last will be first, and some who are first will be last. Do we give lip service of
authentic service to following Jesus and living the kingdom of God? In other words, do our actions confirm our
words? We strive to enter the narrow gate by doing our best to live the values of God’s kingdom that Jesus
showed us. The Catholic Church is observing a Jubilee Year of Mercy. Would you describe yourself as a merciful
person? Would those closest to you describe you as a merciful person? Pope Francis tells us that mercy is
fundamental to the Christian life and the proclamation of the gospel. We pray to be instruments of God’s mercy.

WEDDING ANNIVERSARY MASS
Bishop Mark Bartchak and the Family Life Office cordially invite all
couples (and their families) who or are celebrating, or who did
celebrate, their 1, 5, 10, 25, 40, 50, 55, and 60+ Wedding Anniversary
in 2016 to attend the Annual Wedding Anniversary Liturgy. Couples
may attend Sunday, Sept. 11th in Altoona at Cathedral of the
Blessed Sacrament or Sunday, Sept. 18th in Johnstown at St. John
Gualbert Cathedral. Both locations are handicap accessible. Liturgies in
each location begin at 2:00 p.m. Bishop Mark will be the celebrant and
homilist at each celebration. Punch and cookies will be available after
the mass for anniversary couples and their families. Reservations
must be made through your parish office for either celebration by
TOMORROW, Monday, August 22nd.
YEAR OF MERCY SUMMER ROAD TRIP
Next Sunday is your last chance to spend a summer afternoon as a
“pilgrim” visiting three churches celebrating their 200th Anniversary
founded by our own saint-in-progress, Servant of God, Rev. Demetrius
Gallitzin. Take a drive NEXT SUNDAY to Holy Name, Ebensburg, St.
Patrick, Newry, and St. Thomas the Apostle, Bedford, the designated
sites for the Holy Doors of the Jubilee of Mercy. Prayer times have
been scheduled at all three churches August 28. Prayers will be led in
half hour intervals from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, beginning at 1:30 PM. You
may even want to include a visit to St. Michael of the Archangel Basilica, Loretto the site of the tomb of Father Gallitzin to top off your day!
An added bonus is an opportunity to grow spiritually and gain a Plenary
Indulgence of the Church during this special time.
FAMILIES AND THE GOSPEL
Luke 13:22-30 The “narrow gate” Jesus “opens for us” does not lead to
the accumulation of stuff, but it does lead to happiness. Family must be
the school where we learn to ignore the lures of a materialistic world
and to follow Jesus through “the narrow gate.”
INTRODUCTION FOR TODAY’S READINGS
Twenty–First Sunday in Ordinary Time
Isaiah 66:18-21 When the Jews returned from exile in
Babylon, they found their beloved Jerusalem in shambles. In
today’s passage, the prophet looks ahead to better days when
people from foreign lands will flock to Jerusalem as the city
God built.
Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13 This letter to the Hebrews was written
to people who had become discouraged and were losing faith.
Today the author quotes a text from the Old Testament book
of Proverbs, and finds in it encouraging words.

BROTHER SHAMUS CHARITY RIDE
Bro. Shamus McGrenra, T.O.R. is on a mission to feed the
hungry and clothe the naked. That is why he spends many
weeks each year pedaling hundreds (sometimes thousands) of
miles to raise money for the Dorothy Day Outreach Center at
Saint Francis University. This fall, he will travel through 10
states, biking a total of 1,500 miles to raise his goal of
$40,000. “Cycling the Atlantic Coast for the Dorothy Day
Outreach Center” will take Bro. Shamus on an eight-week
journey from New York City to Sarasota, Fla. Despite being
diagnosed with colon cancer in 2013, Bro. Shamus has
continued his charity ride, continually increasing both his
distance and fundraising goals. To learn more about his
mission or to make a donation to support his charity ride, visit:
francis.edu/charityride.
