MISERICORDIA CANDY DAYS
Friday, April 26 & Saturday, April 27
Jelly beans aren’t just for Easter anymore, thanks to Jelly Belly Candy Company! For the eleventh consecutive year, Jelly Belly Candy Co. is donating
over 1.2 million sample bags of their signature flavors.
Thousands of volunteers (will you be one of those people? YES!!) will be
out on the streets and in store fronts from dawn until dusk across Chicagoland handing out Jelly Belly jelly beans in exchange for donations that will
support programming provided by Misericordia for children and adults
with developmental disabilities. Candy Days is one of our biggest fundraising efforts that significantly helps us cover the difference between what the
State of Illinois provides and what it costs to operate Misericordia. We are
all aware of the difficult economic times and the State budget crunch, so we hope that we can count on you to help! A single dollar
(or more....) from each person you know will help us meet our 2013 goal! Come volunteer! All you need is a pair of comfortable

Get your heart-a-racin! Run for Misericordia.
Thinking about running the Chicago Marathon or do you know someone else who is? We
are looking to bring new friends to our Heartracers Team! Run, walk, jog, ride (ok, riding
might be against the rules...) the 26.2 miles on behalf of the residents of Misericordia on Oct
13, 2013. Our Heartracers Team has run away with new friends, an AWESOME t-shirt,
attained bragging rights, a new level of fitness and the sense that they achieved
something beyond completing a marathon. In 2012, more than 65 Heartracers raised
$91,000 AND invaluable community awareness about Misericordia. Contributions
to Misericordia raised by our team members are most gratefully received and
support the vital programs that enrich the lives of more than 600 children and
adults with developmental disabilities. Please invite your friends, family members

REGISTRATION FOR CHICAGO MARATHON BEGINS FEB 19th!
Dear Friends,
As the New Year 2013 begins, all of us here at Misericordia continue to be overwhelmed with loving gratitude to God and you,
our family and friends. As I drive around our beautiful campus with its many wonderful buildings, I am in awe of what has
happened since we arrived at an abandoned campus thirty-six years ago.
In 1976, thirty-nine children (our pioneers), mostly persons with Down Syndrome, and thirty-five staff arrived from Misericordia Home South to begin Misericordia North on the former Angel Guardian Orphanage campus. We used all our savings
to renovate four floors of two existing institutional buildings for three dormitories and a learning center.
Now, in this new year of 2013, we are blessed to share life with 600 adults and children and almost 1,000 staff. These special
friends are all living good lives, each according to their varied potential. They are happy people who teach us daily how to accept life on God’s terms, for they have no expectation of life except what is theirs.
As an agency, we are unique because we are one of the few human services for people with developmental disabilities that
can claim a full continuum of care – from a skilled nursing home to eight houses in the neighborhoods. This also includes 18
residential homes on campus, an apartment building, a skilled nursing home, buildings for recreation, life learning classes, and
ongoing educational and work opportunities. All are attractive and beautifully maintained.
One reason God has blessed us abundantly is because in every situation where we grew and expanded we were genuinely
meeting unmet needs. Through this expansion we gave services to those who were healthy individuals, to those who were in
need of skilled and intermediate nursing care, to ambulatory children and adults, and to non-ambulatory persons. It was only
through building and expanding that we were able to reach out to more families in need.
Today, we are ready to meet another unmet need: to build appropriate residences and create suitable programs for our own
aging population. Today we have 16 adults in their sixties and 68 in their fifties. We were inspired to begin this project by one
of the largest gifts Misericordia has ever received. Through a most generous bequest from Marie and George Quinlan, of loving memories (a former Misericordia Women’s Board Member and her husband), $8.5 million was designated for our aging
population. Please pray for these two great friends! We take this gift as a sign from God that we should take on this additional
challenge in spite of the uncertainties of Government funding and the very difficult climate all human services are facing. I
continue to be convinced that any human service that depends solely on Government funding does not have a future.
Thus, in 2013 we will begin a campaign for $30 million. This will help us cover the full building costs of the four specialized
residences and will create an endowment for these particular services.
You could justifiably ask why we are taking on these additional financial pressures when the Government owes us $27 million
in back payments. Besides not being paid, our 2013 annual deficit (difference between what the Government pays and what it
costs to operate) has risen to $15 million. This must be raised just to cover the many increases in our yearly expenses, including the Government depriving 400 adults who live on campus the financial coverage formerly allowed for home visits, hospitalizations, and outside therapy care. If they live in neighborhood houses (CILAs) or in our apartment building, home visits
are allowed with no financial pressures to Misericordia Home. Does this seem fair?!
We continue to expand and meet more needs because we know God is using us to witness to our world that there are still
many good and generous believers. You, our family and friends, know that you are called to make a difference in our world,
especially for those who can’t create a good world for themselves. You have never disappointed us!
Thank you for all that was, is, and will be! The Misericordia Home of today owes much to all who have walked this journey
with us and to all who will continue this life-giving journey into the future. You give us the courage to face whatever is before
us with confidence and with trust in God and in you, our co-ministers. How blessed we are! May the coming year be filled
with God’s choicest blessings for you and yours.

the winners received a financial bonus and a plaque. This year, Cristina Zuniga de
Menjivar, Housekeeper in Holbrook; Susana Gonzalez, DSP in McAuley; Gloria Lane,
DSP in Houlihan Home; Rachael Carr-Ozenbaugh, QIDP in Marian Center; and Beth
Muckler, Physical Therapist, were chosen to receive this honor. These five individuals
truly capture the spirit of Misericordia! Thank you for your dedication and hard work.

CHALLENGE GRANT ALERT!
A kind donor has challenged Misericordia’s
friends and supporters to give generously in
2013. If we receive $50,000 in new or increased
contributions, the donor will match those gifts
dollar for dollar, for a total of $100,000. If you
are donating to us for the first time, the entire
amount will be matched. If you have made one
or more donations in the last two years and are
able to increase that total amount in 2013, the

Lindsey Vecchione visited Misericordia for a tour and to have
some fun with the residents! Needless to say, hockey was on the
list of things to do. Misericordia sports volunteer John Dyer and
his sports teams joined Jonathan for some hockey tips in the gym
at Misericordia.
Gavin Coyle to perform at Misericordia!
Gavin Coyle is an accomplished singer and songwriter, His
musical range covers both pop and folk music as well as traditional
music from his homeland of Ireland. His performances reflect
great versatility as he mixes traditional and original compositions.

This is the PERFECT event for a GIRLS DAY OUT! The Misericordia
Women’s Auxiliary and SaksFifth Avenue present the Annual Spring
Luncheon and Fashion Show at the Palmer House Hilton, 17 East Monroe
in Chicago on Friday, March 15. The festivities will begin with a reception,
silent auction and raffle in the Red Lacquer Room followed by lunch and
the hottest fashions for 2013 presented by Saks Fifth Avenue in the Grand
Ballroom. The Misericordia Heartbreakers will perform and Saks Fifth
Avenue will host a boutique immediately following the luncheon. Tickets

The local chapter of City Heat Motorcycle
Club took their annual trip to Misericordia to
visit and deliver gifts and cheer throughout!
Our volunteer program is invaluable to the staff and residents. Last year, we
hosted 24 volunteer orientations for 300 individuals who committed to 6
months to one year of service.
On campus: 175 regular volunteers and 75 each weekday. Thousands help
annually for Family Fest, Candy Days and for special Holiday Help!
HONOREES SHINE AT HEART OF MERCY BALL
presented by the Misericordia Women’s Board on November 9 at The Fairmont
Hotel in downtown Chicago. We thank the Women’s Board for their hard work on
this wonderful black-tie event, especially Women’s Board President Carol Whiting, event chair Mary Beth Schweihs and co-chair Patsy Caruso and auction chair
Sharon Taylor. With more than 600 people in attendance, the Women’s Board
raised $525,000 for Misericordia. Congratulations to the 2012 honorees: BUMS

The Artist in All
This year’s Sibling Signature event will take
place at the world renowned Art Institute
in downtown Chicago. The Artist in All
exhibition and auction, organized by Misericordia’s Sibling Organization, will
feature more than 150 original works of art created by talented resident artists
with the assistance of our dedicated staff, art therapists and volunteers. Please
mark your calendars for Wednesday, May 22 from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. in the
Modern Wing of the Art Institute. Tickets are $125 per person and will be
available online beginning April 2 at misericordia.org. Ticket price increases to
$150 after May 1. Purchase your tickets early as this event will sell out! Special

Fulbright Scholars
visit Misericordia
Each year the U.S. Department
of State Bureau of Educational
and Cultural Affairs sponsors a
series of enrichment seminars
for Fulbright Visiting Scholars
on topics of global importance.
Through community outreach
activities and discussions, scholars
learn how the selected topic impacts communities in the U.S. and explore its impact on

The Misericordia Junior Board has grown by leaps and bounds welcoming high school
students from throughout Chicagoland! Over 40 teens volunteered for the Junior
Board Holiday Party for organized by under the leadership of Junior Board Advisor
and Sibling Anne Mills, and Junior Board Members Molly Morris and Connor Tobin.
The evening included a photo booth and holiday card making section as well as games,
BINGO and a hot chocolate café. Junior Board members are making a difference by
volunteering at brunches, special events and anywhere that their helping hands are
