Cork Chamber focuses on Maritime Opportunities
All around the globe, governments are increasingly recognising
the social and economic value of the seas: as a source of energy,
materials, food and leisure, as well as a transportation corridor.
According to the European Commission’s 2012 publication
entitled Blue Growth: Opportunities for Marine and Maritime
Sustainable Growth, “The EU’s blue economy represents 5.4
million jobs and a gross added value of just under €500 billion per
year. With appropriate measures these figures could rise to €600
billion and 7 million jobs by 2020.”
Minister Coveney has also highlighted the vast potential of the
Blue Economy nationally which he estimates could be worth up
to €6bn and Cork is naturally well positioned to reap the benefits
of this growth, boasting the second largest natural harbour in the
world. Corks potential has also been recognised by Government
who have cited future investment of €150m to €200m in the
sector over the next 5 years. Focused around the Ringaskiddy
area, the Irish Maritime Research Cluster (IMERC) are at the centre
of promoting Ireland as a world renowned maritime and research
development location. It is also the site of the National Maritime
College of Ireland, the Irish Naval Service and the UCC Beaufort
Laboratory.
In recognition of the vast economic potential of Cork businesses
in the maritime sector, Cork Chamber is participating in a
European Project funded through the ‘Regions of Knowledge’
Seventh Framework Programme called the Resource Efficiency
Maritime Capacity Project (REMCAP). REMCAP is a collaborative
project involving 14 partner organisations from six European
maritime clusters. Each cluster includes actors from the business/
commercial sector; the academic/research community; and public
authorities who work together within defined geographical areas
in England, France, Ireland, Lithuania, Portugal and Sweden. Cork
Chamber is the business representative in the Irish cluster and
4
works collaboratively with the Irish Maritime and Energy Cluster
(IMERC) and the Cork County Council.
The project is focused on the key markets of offshore wind;
ocean energy; fishing; aquaculture; blue biotech; aggregates and
dredging and sea bed mining with the Irish Cluster focusing in
particular on the wave and tidal energy markets. The REMCAP
project explores key factors that are known to impact on the
success of a cluster and includes recommendations to grow the
strength of the IMERC cluster across these powerful and vital
areas.
The most recent output of the REMCAP project has been the
publication of the second REMCAP Newsletter which was
developed in collaboration with the other project partners. This
newsletter updates the reader on the achievements and outputs
of the project to date and also highlights the project activities
that will be undertaken in the next period.
To view the second newsletter please see the ‘deliverables and
reports’ section of the REMCAP website at www.remcap.eu.
For more information on the REMCAP project and the
participating clusters please see the REMCAP website or contact

Cork as a Business Location
Cork Chamber has submitted an editorial article entitled ‘Cork
as a business location’ to the forthcoming second edition of the
Cork Airport Holiday and Destination Guide. This free passenger
magazine will be available throughout the airport from May
2015. The editorial showcases the Cork region, and elaborates on
the achievements of the region in attracting consistent FDI and
domestic investment, the diversity and adaptability of the region
in its ability to offer a successful base to such a broad spectrum of
businesses from the technology giants, to the life science giants
to our domestic entrepreneurs, and promotes the innovative
culture and natural resources of the region.
The editorial reflects on the foundations and structures available
within the Cork region such as accessibility, connectivity,
the skilled and highly educated workforce, the focus on
research and development and the emphasis on creating an
attractive infrastructure suitable to the diverse needs of our
business partners. This free passenger magazine which is
available to arriving and departing passengers is an invaluable
communication and information dissemination tool reaching
over 2 million passengers annually, and so we have taken
this opportunity to broaden the reach of the Cork region
and advertise its attributes as a region which adds value to
investment. To see the full article go to Policy Section on www.

Regional Action Plan for Jobs
Cork Chamber has commenced an engagement strategy with
regional stakeholders across the South West region with regards
to the Regional Action Plan for Jobs. The Chamber also attended
the stakeholder workshop in Cork on April 17th organised by
the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton,
T.D., who is leading this new initiative to develop and implement
Regional Action Plans for Jobs throughout the country. This
process will identify each region’s strengths, competitive
advantages and areas of opportunity, and produce an actionoriented plan to support enterprise growth and jobs in the
region. Consultation with regional stakeholders from both the
private and public sector will underpin the Action Plan.

Industy - Research
Collaboration
The Enterprise Europe Network recently hosted an interactive
presentation session with the Tyndall Institute, which gave
attendees an insight into some current Tyndall projects, and
examples of past projects which given rise to successful
research-SME collaborations. The SMEs in attendance were
given practical tips on how to engage with the Tyndall, and
where there are opportunities to get involved in R&D and EU
projects.
The themes discussed included: Enterprise Europe Network
partnering services; health and agri-food innovations (including
med tech, animal health, point-of-care diagnostics, process
analytics, bio-sensing for milk); environment & water treatment
projects; innovation through light; funding opportunities for
SMEs through Gate One, H2020, the EU’s SME Instrument.
For a copy of the presentations or for more information on any
of these themes, contact [email protected].
How does the EU’s General Food
Law impact on your business?
The European Commission has launched a public consultation in
order to better understand how General Food Law (i.e. EU rules
on food/feed safety along the production chain) affects small
businesses in the sector. The Commission is keen to hear about
SME experiences, both good and bad, in terms of complying
with the legislation. If, for example, the current legislation creates
additional paperwork or undue costs for your business, then they
would like to know.
This survey is aimed at all food/feed businesses along the supply
chain, including: processors and manufacturers or food/feed
products; manufacturers of food contact materials (e.g. packaging,
cutlery, kitchen equipment) and plant production products
(pesticides); wholesalers of food/feed products (including import/
export); retailers (mainly selling food/feed, specialised or nonspecialised); Caterers/restaurants; transport/storage (mainly for the
food/feed sector, specialised or non-specialised).
Your feedback will help assess the effectiveness of the law, and
possibly make changes to it. If you are operating in one of the
sectors above and would be willing to complete a short survey
on how food/feed regulations impact your business, then please
email [email protected].
All respondents will be entered into a draw to win a bottle of Prosecco!

O'Leary Life & Pensions, one of Ireland's largest financial services
companies hosted a client event, titled an "Evening with David
McWilliams". The event was part of an ongoing association
O'Leary Life & Pensions maintains with David McWilliams, as he
authors a weekly investment report for the firm's clients. The
renowned economist attracted several hundred invited guests,
eager to garner his views on the Global economic outlook,
coupled with more localised issues, such as his recent appearance
at the banking tribunal. Topics on the night covered the recovery
in the US and UK economies to the possibility of Britain leaving
the EU, and its impact on Ireland as a major trading partner.
Specifically on the Irish recovery, McWilliams remains upbeat and
whilst noting caution in certain areas, believes there is further to
run on this positive story. His specific notes of caution however
focused primarily on the potential members of Ireland's future
governments, and the negative impacts some member parties
could levy on business sectors, most specifically SMEs. Further

Vodafone invests €20 million throughout Cork City and County
Vodafone Ireland is celebrating the official opening of the Vodafone
Munster HQ, increasing employee numbers to 87 in the county.
Vodafone has embarked on an ambitious network enhancement
programme, investing €20 million in Cork in the last three years,
that has directly influenced business activity across the region and
the company has as a result, invested extensively in people and
employment.
Anne O’Leary, CEO, Vodafone Ireland said, “Our customers businesses
are going from strength to strength and our team has grown over
the last year to provide our customers with the best network speeds,
innovative total communications solutions and superior service. We
are committed to network and business development in this region and
want to continue to expand alongside our customers.”
The new Munster office employs engineers, technicians and desk and
field-based account managers, bringing the highest level of service to
businesses across Cork and the wider Munster region. Led by a Cork
native, Leo O’Leary, “The team and Debbie Power, newly appointed
Regional Manager, will be on the ground to respond faster and more
efficiently to customers in the region. Close proximity to customers will
allow for a better understanding of their needs to provide the technology
and communications services required to grow their business now and
into the future.”
The expansion in Cork builds on Vodafone’s commitment to enhance
Cork’s communications infrastructure, with upgrades already completed
across the county including the M8 motorway, significantly improving
voice services, reducing the numbers of dropped calls experienced by
commuters on the Cork-Dublin road.
In addition, Vodafone has accelerated its roll-out of superfast 4G – now
with over 96% coverage in Cork, delivering 4G service to 500 towns
and villages across the county. Superfast speeds mean videos with
no buffering, instant photo uploads and seamless music streaming.
Business customers can experience even more benefits; downloading
large emails and sending files quicker than ever before. Vodafone has
also rolled out even faster mobile technology, 4G+, now available in 26
locations in Cork.
Anne O’Leary, Vodafone with Paul
Meagher, Jess Carey, Suzanne
Murphy and Paul Lordan.
Vodafone is also investing significantly in Ireland’s next-generation
fixed broadband services. In July 2014, Vodafone announced a joint
venture with ESB to invest €450 million in building a fibre-to-thebuilding broadband network reaching 500,000 premises in 50 towns
by the end of 2018. Offering speeds up to 1,000 Mbps, this will turn
Ireland into one of the world’s fastest broadband countries. In addition,
it will make Ireland the first country in Europe to utilise existing low
voltage electricity infrastructure to deploy fibre directly into homes
and businesses. Locations in Cork to receive the service include:
Ballincollig, Carrigaline, Cobh, Cork City, Little Island, Mallow and
Midleton.
