Carnival, Razorfish launch social
media application for planning
cruises without leaving Facebook
MIAMI — After relying on travel
agents for decades, cruise lines are
now targeting consumers directly as
never before.
Carnival Cruise Lines and Razorfish
are now launching a new application
aimed at Facebook’s 500 million users
whereby individuals can share cruise
planning and booking with Facebook
friends without leaving the site.
The application, the first of its kind
in the cruise industry according
to Carnival, allows users to engage
their social network in their vacation
planning through personalized
newsfeed updates and even invite
friends to book the same trip.
The application, available on
Carnival’s official Facebook fan
page (www.facebook.com/carnival),
enables the user to explore all
available Carnival cruise options
without leaving Facebook by
providing the functionality to sort

cruises by date, duration, port of call
and accommodation type. Once users
decide on a particular cruise, they can
share the detailed cruise information
with their Facebook friends by simply
clicking a button.
Users can also customize their
newsfeed messages, which include a
link to the cruise, to invite friends to
book the trip as well.
“A Carnival cruise is a very social
experience and this application is
a natural extension of our efforts to
engage our nearly 250,000 Facebook
fans in a unique and exciting way,”
said Jim Berra, Carnival’s chief
marketing officer. “By allowing our
customers to share their cruising
plans with Facebook friends, we are
making it easier for them to plan
group trips and encourage others to
join in the fun.”
Digital marketing agency Razorfish
sought to tap into the power of

the online community to drive
engagement with the Carnival
brand. As a result, the agency helped
conceptualize, create and design
the application as a way to offer the
cruise line’s products and services in
native locations for consumers.
“This is a great example of how
a brand can create a meaningful,
relevant and social experience that
enhances an activity consumers are
engaging in anyway, in this case
sharing their vacation plans on
Facebook,” said Cristina Lawrence,
director of word of mouth and
social media marketing at Razorfish.
“Carnival realizes people’s passion
for cruising is ‘socially’ contagious,
which is why we helped them
design an application that enables
consumers to share the real-time
excitement of the booking process
and the opportunity to invite friends
to join them.”
Once users have taken advantage
of the Facebook application to
choose and share their Carnival
cruise plans, they will be directed
to the appropriate shopping cart
page on Carnival.com to finalize the
transaction.

week exclusively for Sunquest to 19
destinations covering Mexico, the
Dominican Republic, Cuba, the
Bahamas, Jamaica, Aruba, Curaçao
and Costa Rica.
The onboard product has also been
enhanced to include a wide range of
services designed specifically with
the Sunquest customer in mind.
“We’ve conducted market research
to find out what our customers rate
as most important when they travel
and overwhelmingly the feedback
has come back in favour of more
seat pitch and flights that operate
on time,” said Steve Butchart, vice
president of Sunquest. “As far as
seat pitch goes, we’ve invested the
resources necessary to provide our
customers with a 31-inch pitch
throughout. This represents a 10%
increase from flights previously
operated on behalf of Sunquest.”
“To ensure we get them where they
want to go on time, by partnering
with Jazz to operate these aircraft,
we’ve aligned ourselves with a
company that has the highest ontime performance in the country
and a stellar safety record. While
that relates directly to scheduled
and not charter carriers, you have to
consider that they are able to achieve
that record whilst flying into some of
North America’s biggest and busiest
hubs – New York, Philadelphia,
Washington and the like.”
In addition to providing more
comfort on every flight, Sunquest,
together with Thomas Cook
Airlines Canada and Jazz, is also
offering its customers extras such
as welcome mimosas, a full hot
breakfast on morning flights, a full
hot meal service with choice of
offering on lunch and dinner flights,
a complimentary glass of wine with
lunch or dinner, complimentary
kids’ activity book with crayons and
fresh warm cookies baked right on
board (where flying time permits).
There will also be a limited number
of PlayStation Portables (PSPs), preloaded with eight movies, two hours
of TV and four games, available to
rent for $10 per unit on a first-come,
first-served basis.
There are also two new levels of
service available – Silver and Gold.
The Silver package – over $150 in
value for $49 per person – offers the
following added value inclusions:
complimentary seat selection,
priority check-in, priority baggage
handling, up to 5kg in additional
baggage allowance (25kg total),
priority boarding, guaranteed choice
of meal for lunch and dinner, two
additional complimentary alcoholic
drink vouchers, complimentary

order of $75 (pre-tax) from the
Sunquest e-boutique.
The Gold package – over $300

provides customers with all of the
extras in the Silver package plus:

Plaza Premium lounge access

“There’s a casual chic atmosphere
in Fort Lauderdale that you can’t
find elsewhere,” he said. “We’ve got
so many value-added attractions
and activities, from fine dining to
beautiful parks, and all this without
the hustle and bustle of South Beach
or the steep park admission fees
you’ll find in other parts of Florida.”
Gonzalez went on to note the
city’s 23 miles of beaches, the exotic
Everglades, the endless variety
of water sports available and the
local water taxis, often considered
the quintessential Fort Lauderdale
experience. But most importantly,
he reassured guests that its beaches
are open and ready for business.
“We were very lucky that the oil
spill has had no impact on us,” he
added. “The Blue Wave Council
conducts water tests every day and
has determined that there’s only a
1% chance that the oil will reach our
shores.”
In terms of development, Fort

ATOUT FRANCE shares
what’s new in Lyon, on
the rails and in the sky
By Cindy Sosroutomo
Travelweek August 26/2010
TORONTO — Before making
their way to the IncentiveWorks
trade show in downtown Toronto,
members of ATOUT FRANCE –
the France Tourism Development
Agency – made a brief stop at a
Toronto restaurant last week to host
an intimate media luncheon.
Along with partners Air France,
Lyon Tourism & Conventions and
Rail Europe, the delegation gave an
update on what’s new in terms of
products and services.
Meetings and incentive travel has
long been big business in France,
which places sixth in the world for
number of congresses held (341
events were held in 2009). A total of
six French cities place in the top 100
in the world for hosting international
congresses, and France also wins
the distinction of being the top
European country for total number
of meeting facilities.
But it’s not all business here –
ATOUT FRANCE is spreading the
word that Lyon, the country’s second
largest city and known as the ‘Other
City of Lights’, offers plenty of leisure
activities too.
A new ad campaign titled ONLY.
24
LYON was launched last year to
increase the city’s international
appeal and glamour. Often regarded
as France’s capital of gastronomy as
well as a leader in silk production,
Lyon is currently undergoing major
development.
The biggest news coming out of
the city is the ongoing construction
of the Confluence district, which
upon completion in 2020 will be the
largest urban development project
in Europe. The site will double the
downtown area and will include a
waterfront, museum, a leisure centre,
marina, restaurants and hotels.
Helping to get your clients to
Lyon – hopefully in time for the
annual Fête des Lumières festival in
December – is Rail Europe, whose
groups department can handle
bookings of all sizes. What sets the
company apart is the fact that with
groups of 10 or more no deposit is
necessary.
Looking to the skies, Air France is
also making headlines with its 60th
anniversary in Canada this year. To
celebrate the milestone, the airline
is introducing Premium Voyageur
this October, a new cabin situated
in between Economy and Business
class.
With 21-40 seats, the new
cabin offers 40% more space than
Economy and many of the same
amenities as Business (not including
meals). Javier Santamaria, account
Lyon is France’s second largest city and is considered the country’s capital of gastronomy.
executive, notes that the new cabin
“is not a down-sell from Business
class, but actually an up-sell from
Economy.”
Other amenities include seats
that recline 123 degrees within a
hard shell, four-inch wide leather
arm rests, built-in foot rests and
individual entertainment systems.
According to Santamaria, every
international long-haul flight will
feature Premium Voyageur by 2011.
Air France currently offers 28 flights
per week from Montreal to Paris and
a daily flight from Toronto to Paris.

AC to double daily
Vancouver-Tokyo flights
with launch of nonstop
flights to Haneda Airport
VANCOUVER — Air Canada
is boosting service to Tokyo by
adding a new daily, nonstop flight
between Vancouver and Haneda
Airport, conveniently located near
the Japanese capital.
The new route begins Jan. 29,
2011 and will complement existing
daily flights to Narita International
Airport, meaning Air Canada is
doubling daily service between
Vancouver and Tokyo as part of its
international expansion strategy.
Flights are now available for
purchase.
“With Canada’s only service
to Haneda Airport, Air Canada
is offering travellers to Japan the
best of both worlds and twice as
many flights to get there from
Vancouver. Customers will be able
to choose between flying nonstop to
Haneda, which is only 30 minutes
from downtown Tokyo, or they
can continue to fly nonstop to
Narita International Airport for
onward domestic or international
connections on our Star Alliance
partners,”

WestJet cuts fares in attempt to
get consumers to stop waiting for
seat sales to get lower prices
CALGARY — Canadian travellers
are a pretty savvy lot. They know that
waiting is often the best way to get the
lowest price.
Many suppliers have tried to change
this behaviour by offering early
booking discounts or by guaranteeing
that those who book early will get the
benefit if prices drop. This has been
only marginally effective.
WestJet is the latest to try to get
people to stop waiting for seat sales
because they are faced with expensive
regular fares.
The Calgary-based carrier has
introduced, what it calls, “new
everyday value fares with an enhanced
pricing structure that reduces the
volatility that has been present in the
airline industry by providing lower
fares across their entire schedule (330
days ahead of departure). Guests
can purchase with confidence when
they’re ready to book rather than

have to wait for a seat sale to get a low
price”.
In addition, WestJet has reduced
full price fares by an average of 25%
for all flights across its entire 68city North American and Caribbean
network.
According to Hugh Dunleavy,
WestJet executive vice-president,
Strategy and Planning, “feedback
from our guests shows that they are
frustrated at the unpredictability of
fares with seat sales only available up
to a few months in advance.
“As part of this new strategy, fares
at the higher end of the spectrum will
be reduced. For those guests who,
for one reason or another, have to
travel at the last minute or at peak
travel times like Christmas, we’ve
significantly reduced those fares to
make them more affordable.”
But will sceptical Canadians really
believe this move will end seat sales?
