FROM THE HOLY LAND
My brothers and sisters,
It feels good to be back home here at Mount Carmel. As you all know, I have been away for several weeks traveling! I
would like to take this opportunity to share with all of you my experience. My brother seminarians and I were on a pilgrimage in the Holy Land from January 5-18. This was my first time visiting this amazing place and I must admit it was
very transforming. It is an honor and will always be an honor to walk in the same footsteps of Jesus Christ. “Walking in
the footsteps of Jesus, our Lord and God,” sums up these two weeks.
The sites that we visited were: Jaffa, Akko, Nazareth, Sepphoris, Sea of Galilee, Jericho, Jerusalem, Ein Karem, Bethlehem, Masada, Bethany, and Emmaus. This pilgrimage offered each seminarian the opportunity to encounter Jesus in
this very unique and personal way. Not only were we hearing about Jesus in the Gospels but we were with Him on the
land that he walked. It was indeed and still is a transforming experience. One cannot leave the Holy Land without coming into contact with the humanity of Jesus, to experience what He experience, to see what He saw.
I cannot say that there was one experience that seemed to be the highlight of the pilgrimage. Each site that we visited,
each thing we saw, we found ourselves saying, “It cannot get better then this” and somehow it did. To try to understand
what this pilgrimage was about, I invite you to open up the gospels and read it, because what you read or hear at Holy
Mass, we were present. There is so much truth in the saying that the Holy Land is the fifth gospel.
I would like to share with you some of my experiences. Friday, January 15th we had early morning Mass at the Basilica
of the Holy Sepulcher which is the burial site of our Lord. Please understand what a privilege it was for us to have Holy
Mass at this Holy Site! The tomb of Jesus is very small and only three people could fit into it, so it was just enough room
for the priests. We stood outside the tomb in a little chamber and celebrated Mass together. I had the privilege of reading at this Mass. This is the spot where Jesus our Lord was raised from the dead, so Jesus was no longer present in the
tomb but during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass through the words of institution of Msgr. Swiader (Vice Rector) and Msgr.
Vaccari (Rector), Christ was present in the Eucharist in His Body and Blood. After Mass, each of us at the opportunity to
spend time in prayer and to venerate this holy site before the crowds came.
One other experience that I would like to share with you was walking the Stations of the Cross. For years, I have always
tried to imagine what it was like for Jesus to take up His cross and carry it, to experience what He experienced. I have
read devotional books, seen videos, and the most famous of all, the film “The Passion of the Christ,” by Mel Gibson.
Nothing in my perspective comes close, then walking in the actual footstep of Jesus. We began the stations at the
Chapel of the Flagellation, where Jesus was tried and condemned by Pontius Pilate. Together we carried our own personal crosses that we carry in our lives as we retraced Jesus’ last footsteps just before His crucifixion which brought us
to Calvary.
The part that made it all very special for me, was the honor of bring your prayer intentions with me to all these Holy
Sites. All of you were in my prayers. What is great about bring your prayer intentions is that you were present with me in
prayer at all these Holy Sites. In a spiritual way all of you were on pilgrimage with me. All the prayer request, all the
crosses that we carry were left in the places that came into contact with Jesus Christ. That leaves a deep satisfaction in
all of our hearts to know that our prayers are with Jesus Christ. I thank all of you for taking the extra time few weekends
ago to write out your prayer intentions so that I was able to bring them to the Holy Land. All of us have benefited from
this powerful experience.
On January 18th we packed our bags and spent 24 hours traveling from Tel Aviv to London and London back to New
York. What is awesome about this pilgrimage is that it never ends. Every time, I open up the Scriptures, or hear it proclaimed at Mass, I go back to these Holy Places in mind and spirit and remember your prayer intentions that you all

Mis hermanos y hermanas,
Me siento feliz regresando regreso aquí a Monte Carmelo. Como todos ustedes saben, he estado fuera durante varias
semanas viajando! Me gustaría aprovechar esta oportunidad para compartir con todos mi experiencia. Nosotros Seminaristas estábamos en una peregrinación a la Tierra Santa desde enero 5-18. Esta fue mi primera visita a este lugar increíble
y debo admitir que fue muy maravilloso y me trasformo. Es un honor y siempre será un honor para caminar en los mismos
pasos de Jesucristo. "Caminando en los pasos de Jesús, nuestro Señor y Dios", esta el resumen estas dos semanas.
Los sitios que visitamos fueron: Jaffa, Acre, Nazaret, Séforis, Mar de Galilea, Jericó, Jerusalén, Ein Karem, Belén, Masada, Betania y Emaús. Esta peregrinación que se le ofrece a los seminaristas fue una oportunidad de encontrar a Jesús
en esta misma forma única y personal. No sólo hemos oído acerca de Jesús en los Evangelios, pero estábamos con él en
la tierra que él anduvo. Era, en efecto, y sigue siendo una experiencia transformadora. Uno no puede salir de la Tierra
Santa, sin entrar en contacto con la humanidad de Jesús, a experimentar lo que El experimento, para ver lo que El vio.
No puedo decir que fue una experiencia que parecía ser el punto culminante de la peregrinación. Cada sitio que visitamos,
cada cosa que vimos, nos encontramos diciendo: "¡No puede ser mejor que esto!" y de alguna manera lo hizo. Para tratar
de entender lo que esta peregrinación se acerca, te invito a abrir los evangelios y leer, porque lo que leen o escuchan en
la Santa Misa, se nos presente. Hay tanta verdad en el dicho de que la Tierra Santa es el quinto Evangelio.
Me gustaría compartir con ustedes algunas de mis experiencias. Viernes, 15 de enero tuvimos temprano en la mañana la
misa en la Basílica del Santo Sepulcro, que es el sitio de entierro de nuestro Señor. Por favor, comprenda lo que es un
privilegio que era para nosotros contar con la Santa Misa en este lugar sagrado! La tumba de Jesús es muy pequeña y
sólo tres personas podrían caber en ella, por lo que fue suficiente espacio para los sacerdotes. Nos quedamos fuera de la
tumba en una cámara pequeña y celebró la misa juntos. Tuve el privilegio de leer a esta Misa Este es el lugar donde
nuestro Señor Jesús resucitó de los muertos, de modo que Jesús ya no estaba presente en la tumba, pero durante el
Santo Sacrificio de la Misa a través de la palabras de la institución de Monseñor Swiader (Vicerrector) y Mons. Vaccari
(Rector), Cristo estaba presente en la Eucaristía en su Cuerpo y su Sangre. Después de la misa, cada uno de nosotros en
la oportunidad de pasar tiempo en oración y para venerar este lugar sagrado antes de la multitud llegó.
Con otra experiencia que me gustaría compartir con ustedes fue caminando por las Estaciones de la Cruz. Durante años,
siempre he tratado de imaginar lo que era como para que Jesús tome su cruz y llevarla, a experimentar lo que experimentó Jesus. He leído libros de devoción, visto videos, y el más famoso de todos, la película "La Pasión del Cristo", de
Mel Gibson. Nada en mi vida pinto acerca de la vida a continuación, caminando en la huella real de Jesús. Empezamos a
las estaciones en la Capilla de la Flagelación, donde Jesús fue juzgado y condenado por Poncio Pilato. Juntos hemos llevado a nuestro propio personal de las cruces que llevamos en nuestras vidas como nos volvimos últimos en los pasos de

hace unos cuantos para escribir sus intenciones de oración para que yo era capaz de traer a la Tierra Santa. Todos nos
hemos beneficiado de esta poderosa experiencia.
El 18 de enero empacamos nuestras maletas y pasó 24 horas de viaje desde Tel Aviv a Londres y de vuelta a Nueva
York. Lo que es asombroso acerca de esta peregrinación es que nunca termina. Cada vez que me abren las Escrituras, o
escuchar que proclamó en la misa, me vuelvo a estos lugares sagrados en la mente y el espíritu y recuerda sus intenciones de oración que todos ustedes me han asignado. Le doy las gracias por ello. Stop Abortion Funding in Health Care Reform!
Protect Conscience
Ensure Affordable Health Coverage
Allow Immigrants to Purchase Private Health Insurance
As long-time advocates of health care reform, the U.S. Catholic bishops continue to make the moral case that
genuine health care reform must protect the life, dignity, consciences and health of all, especially the poor and
vulnerable. Health care reform should not advance a pro-abortion agenda in our country.

On November 7, the U.S. House of Representatives passed major health care reform that reaffirms the essential, longstanding and widely supported policy against using federal funds for elective abortions and includes
positive measures on affordability and immigrants.

On December 24, the U.S. Senate rejected this policy and passed health care reform that requires federal
funds to help subsidize and promote health plans that cover elective abortions. All purchasers of such plans
will be required to pay for other people’s abortions through a separate payment solely to pay for abortion.

Outside the abortion context, neither bill has adequate conscience protection for health care providers, plans
or employers.

These two bills must now be combined into one bill that both the House and Senate will vote on in final form.
Provisions against abortion funding and in favor of conscience protection, affordability, and immigrants’ access to health care must be part of a fair and just health care reform bill, or the final bill must be opposed.
