Parish Center Basement
To ensure that everyone will eat promptly and stay out of the cold,
please enter the 2nd glass door at the Parish Center, by the elevator.
The food line will wind around the 1st floor hallway going downstairs
to the Youth Room in the Basement. In the Youth Room will be two
serving buffet lines that will get you through quickly to your seat so
that you can enjoy your meal with your parish family. The Family
Life Commission will be working ahead of time to try to ensure that
everyone will have a comfortable seat. The meal will be catered by
Werner’s. The menu includes: pulled pork, roast turkey, mashed
potatoes and gravy, green beans and cole slaw. The drinks served will
be: tea, lemonade and coffee. Please bring a side dish or dessert to
share. The event is sponsored by the Family Life Commission. If you
are interested in joining our fun group that plans the social events
of the parish family, please contact Dave Chesney at 937-486-1042
or email [email protected].
CHRISTMAS POINSETTIA DONATIONS
During the Christmas season, St. Columbkille Parish adorns the
altars with beautiful potted poinsettias. To help defray the cost of the
flowers, you are welcome to make a donation in memory of a loved
one.
We welcome donations in two ways:
Please include the names of your loved one(s).
(1) A flower donation envelope has been included in your weekly
donation envelopes.
(2) Don’t have a weekly envelope? No problem. Please send in cash
or a check made out to St. Columbkille in an envelope marked
“Christmas Poinsettias.”
You can place the envelope in the Sunday collection basket, or drop
it by the parish office. We need the memorial names by Tuesday,
December 15th, but we happily accept donations anytime. The
suggested donation is $15.00, but any amount is welcome. Thank you
for your consideration. Questions?? Please call the parish office at
937-382-2236 or email [email protected].
OPEN WIDE THE HOLY DOORS
OF MERCY – THE GOSPEL TODAY
IS VERY CLEAR!
Everyone is asking John the Baptist: “What should we
do?” [See Luke 3:10-18.] That is the perfect question as
we wait for Jesus Christ to come the second time. Let us
be found doing the Corporal Works of Mercy: feeding
the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, sheltering the homeless,
clothing the naked, visiting the sick, visiting the prisoners, burying
the dead, and giving alms to the poor.
•Who needs my second coat or blanket or boots?
•Who needs a tithe of my food budget, of my time, of my conversation?
•Who needs to hear good news? How can I proclaim it by word and
by deed?

“Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly and in a calm spirit.
Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever, even if your
whole world seems upset.”
— St. Francis de Sales
“The experience of the Church and the Saints demonstrates a general
law: what comes from the Spirit of God brings with it joy, peace,
tranquility of spirit, gentleness, simplicity, and light. On the other
hand, what comes from the spirit of evil brings sadness, trouble,
agitation, worry, confusion, and darkness. These marks of the good
and the evil spirit are unmistakable signs in themselves.”
— Fr. Jacques Philippe, an excerpt
from In the School of the Holy Spirit, p. 51.
NINE MONTHS WITH CHRIST IN THE WOMB
Week 38: Mary’s body is flooding Jesus with antibodies this week as
he gets ready for the big day. These will support his natural immune
system for most of the first year of life outside the womb. Jesus of the
womb, Hear our prayers! Please pray this prayer every day from
now until December 25th, 2015:
Dear Jesus of the Womb,
Most fragile child of Mary’s protection, we look to You as the youngest
image of perfect innocence. We lift up our prayers to You who will save each
of our souls. Just as You entered humanity through this most gentle and
helpless state, now help us to find Your presence in the faces of all the gentle
and helpless persons of the earth. Bless us with eyes that see You and ears
that hear You: in the presence of the poor and the outcast, the hungry and the
homeless, the condemned and the war-torn, the elderly and the unborn. May
we discover You every day as at Christmas and offer You our gifts every day
as at Epiphany. This we ask of You and the Father, with Your Holy Spirit,
and in union with Mary Your tender home, Amen.

150 Years of Handing on the Faith
~~
There is little record of the growth of the Catholic population in
Clinton County from 1818 until the early 1830’s. That decade saw
the arrival of Patrick Denver, Patrick Dolan, William Rankin, Hubert
Clement and John P. Bigville. Mr. Clement and Mr. Bigville were
natives of Belgium while Mr. Denver, Dolan and Rankin all claimed
Ireland as their homeland. These men and their families were the
driving influences of Catholic community life and the building of
this Parish we call home, St. Columbkille. They also became leading
and influential members of local community and in several cases
nationally. Many descendants of these men remain active in our
Parish to this day, handing on the faith.

FEASTS CELEBRATED THIS WEEK
December 13 – Third Sunday of Advent
Gospel Reading: Luke 3:10-18 - John the Baptist teaches the
path of repentance and announces Christ.
Family Connection
The theme of the season of Advent is sometimes described as
a period of waiting for the birth of Jesus. However, today’s
Gospel reading suggests something different. John the Baptist
did not tell the crowds to wait for the Messiah. He told them
to prepare for the Messiah through acts of repentance. If
Advent is a time of waiting, it is not the sitting in the doctor’s
office kind of waiting. It is a busy time of preparation, more
like the waiting we might do when preparing for dinner
guests. Our challenge is to not make this season a frenzied
time, but rather a time of joyful anticipation and making
ready for God who comes to dwell among us and changes
our lives with the gift of salvation. As you gather as a family,
talk about the preparations your family is making during
the season of Advent. Reflect together on these activities, not
only on what you are doing but why you are choosing to
do these things. Read together today’s Gospel, Luke 3:10-18.
Consider how Advent is a time for making ourselves ready
to receive Jesus in our lives. Could your family make some
changes in your Advent activities so that each person is well
prepared to celebrate the gift of salvation at Christmas?
Conclude in prayer together that your family will be able to
live the spirit of Advent. Sing together an Advent song, such
as “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” or pray together today’s
second reading, Philippians 4:4-7, as you light the third
candle on your Advent wreath.
December 14 –
St. John of the Cross,
Priest & Doctor of the Church
(1542-1591)
St. John of the Cross was born and died in Spain. His parents
were poor and could not give him training in any trade.
Hence he became the servant of the sick in the hospital of
Medina. In 1563, he offered himself as a lay brother to the
Carmelite friars, who, however, perceiving his unusual
talents, had him ordained a priest. When he was about to join
the more severe Order of the Carthusians, the saintly Teresa
persuaded him to remain and help her in the reform of the
Carmelite Order. This reform of his order caused him such
sufferings and brought him many trials. But his sufferings
served only to detach him from creatures. He had a great
devotion to Our Lord’s Passion and voluntarily sought out
humiliations. When Our Lord asked him what reward he
would ask for his labors, John answered: “To suffer and to
be despised for Thee.” He died of a cruel disease, embracing
the crucifix. Because of his profound treatises on mystical
theology Pope Pius XI proclaimed him Doctor of the Church.

SEND A MESSAGE TO
YOUR MEMBERS OF CONGRESS.
CONGRESS MUST ACT NOW TO
CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME!
Our common home is in need of great care and attention.
Your action today can have a huge impact on future
generations.
The following action alert is provided by the U.S. Conference
of Catholic Bishops. On his recent visit to the United States
Pope Francis said, “[C]limate change is a problem which
can no longer be left to a future generation. When it comes
to the care of our ‘common home’, we are living at a critical
moment of history.” Pope Francis’ call is not new. Indeed,
the Church has seen for many years how climate change has
contributed to human suffering around the world; climate
change has exacerbated problems such as coffee leaf rust in
Central America, droughts in Syria, the Sahel and East Africa,
and storms of historic proportions affecting North America
and Asia. More than a decade ago, in 2001, the United
States Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a statement on
Global Climate Change: A Plea for Dialogue, Prudence and
the Common Good, in which they wrote: “In facing climate
change, what we already know requires a response; it cannot
be easily dismissed ... prudence dictates taking mitigating or
preventative action.” As our Church continues to respond to
these challenges, so too must our nation. That is why Catholic
Relief Services and the United States Conference of Catholic
Bishops request that Congress fund U.S. contributions to the
Green Climate Fund and support U.S. leadership in reaching
an agreement on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in this
week’s United Nations negotiations on climate change in
Paris. The Green Climate Fund is an international effort to
help developing nations adapt to climate changes and mitigate
their effects. Take Action Today: Contact your members of
Congress and ask them to support funding for the Green
Climate Fund and strong U.S. leadership in the United
Nations on climate change.

MISSIONARY DISCIPLESHIP
It sounds intimidating, but active and informed discipleship is our
vocation as Catholic Christians. The Lay Pastoral Ministry Program
can help you discern and develop gifts for ministry, grow in faith
and gain the theological knowledge you need to evangelize and
serve others effectively. Courses in scripture, doctrine, morality,
evangelization and liturgy fit into a busy adult schedule with evening
and Saturday sessions. Classes forming now for spring semester and
interviews are ongoing for full admission to Graduate and NonDegreed programs. Locations include the main campus in Cincinnati
and satellite locations in Montfort Heights and Dayton. Call 419-3055486 or 513-231-1200 for information or to schedule an appointment.
The LPMP is sponsored by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and is
celebrating 40 years of service in 2015-16.
Please take a few minutes to look at the 2015 edition of the sponsor page of this bulletin. It is through the generosity of our
area sponsors that we get our bulletin printed free of charge to the parish. We ask you, our parish family and guests, to
consider these advertisers as a source of future business. Please mention you saw their ads on our bulletin! We would like to
thank our local advertisers for their support and encourage everyone to shop local to support our local economy.
