City of Dows
Accepts Playground
The Dows City Council heard
a presentation by Dr. Olson on
behalf of the Clarion-GoldfieldDows School District, regarding
provisions in the law that allows
school districts to gift property
to municipalities. The District is
in the process of vacating the
Dows campus and offered the
playground to the City as a park.
The playground includes two
areas with playground equipment, one for elementary aged
children and one that is designed for preschool aged children, fenced for safety. It has
two basketball courts covered
with a special “sports court” surface that includes markings for
“four square” and “hop scotch”.
It’s great to see the equipment available for the children
of Dows through the City’s willingness to adopt it as a City
Park.
Six Teachers To Retire
The District will be saying
goodbye to six veteran teachers
who have made a difference in
the lives of hundreds of ClarionGoldfield students. They will retire at the end of the school year
and we wish them well in the
next adventures in their lives.
We will miss you.

ELEMENTARY
ENLIGHTENER
By Tricia Rosendahl
It is hard to believe it is already May
and we are in our final month of school.
Time sure flies when you are having
fun. We have had a great year of school
and hope your students feel the same
way.
Thank you for sharing them with
us this year. It has been our pleasure to
work with them and with you. It is when
we work TOGETHER that we all ACHIEVE
more!
I am pleased to announce that in
our elementary we have successfully
achieved 100% conference attendance
once again. We are glad each and every
one of you took time to come in and
visit with us to share about your child’s
progress. We appreciate all your extra
efforts to make it to school!
In April we hosted Preschool Roundup as well as Kindergarten Round-up.
If you have a student ready for any
of those programs and missed those
events, please stop by the Elementary
as soon as possible. If you are aware
of any new families in our community,
please share this information with them
as well.
As we get closer to summer please
remember to take time to read each
day. Over the summer there are many
great opportunities at the public library
for summer reading. Reading 10 – 15
minutes a day will help your child maintain their skills and will make the start
of the next school year even smoother
for them in the fall. The family that reads
together succeeds together.
Don’t forget, all students also have
access to Raz-Kids. You can access that
site by a link from our school home page
(www.clargold.org).
Have a Marvelous May
everybody!
Sheriff’s Department K-9 Dog
Visits Preschool Class
By Mrs. Carpenter
Students in Mrs. Carpenter’s
AM preschool class got to meet
a K-9 dog and Sheriff Adam.
The students learned how the
dog and Sheriff Adam protect
us. The dog did a couple tricks
for the students. The students
were able to look in the sheriff
car.
Thank you for visiting our
classroom, Sheriff Adam. It was
a fun learning experience.

Fourth Graders Get Creative
With the Signs and Symbols
of Music
By Mrs. McGlynn
Throughout this year the fourth graders
have been studying the many signs and
symbols of music. As a culminating project,
Mrs. McGlynn asked them to use many of
those signs and symbols to create a picture.
Much of the work is shown on this page!
Great job thinking outside

First Graders
Visit the Hospital
By Miss Warner, Mrs. Thurn
and Mrs. Simmons-Bailey
The first graders visited Iowa
Specialty Hospital early in April.
Students and teachers were given
a tour and visited the various hospital departments.
They saw the lab and learned
about some of the tests that the
hospital staff does. In the surgery
unit, they found out how a patient
is prepared for surgery.
They also visited the maternity
ward and the radiology department where they saw some neat
x-rays. They even got to see the
fish aquarium; and everyone went
home with a goodie bag!
Thank you Iowa Specialty Hospital for a great day!
Dinosaurs! Dinosaurs! Dinosaurs!
By Mrs. Carpenter
Students in Mrs. Carpenter’s 4-year old preschool class did a unit on
dinosaurs. The students talked about land, air, and water dinosaurs,
meat and plant-eating dinosaurs, bones, and fossils. The students heard
stories about dinosaurs, used pudding to finger paint a dinosaur, and
played with dinosaurs.
At the end of the Dinosaur Unit, 8th grader Tyler Greenfield came and
talked to the students about dinosaurs. Thank you, Tyler!
Elementary Students Were “BORN TO MAKE MUSIC”
By Mrs. McGlynn
Second and Third Grade
Spring Concert
Kindergarten and First Grade
Spring Concert
Great Singers! That’s what the Second and Third
Graders think about themselves! And what better
way to prove it than to “Sing Out Loud”!
That’s just what they did on Tuesday, April 29th
when the Second Grade sang the following songs in
the elementary gym: Born to Make Music, Agalina Hagalina,
The Gum Song, Sarasponda, Dance of Greeting, Check It Out, and
I’ve Got Peace Like a River.
The Third Graders followed with: One Bottle of Pop,
Are You Sleeping, Sing a Little, Down By the Riverside, Frere Jacques,
Can You Believe It? / I Don’t Believe It, The Cuckoo and Born to Make
Music. Singing sure puts us in a good mood!
The Agalina Hagalina Portraits by the Second
Grade and The Stuffed Bugs made by the Third
Grade, with the help of Mrs. Thompson, made the
night ….One Very Special Night!
What a way to bring in Spring! The Kindergarten
and First Grade students sang their hearts out to an
appreciative audience on Thursday, May 1st in the elementary gym.
The Kindergarten sang the following songs: Born to
Make Music, The Old Brass Wagon, Ten in the Bed, Miss Polly Had a
Dolly, Willoughby Wallaby Woo, Acka Backa Soda Cracker, Head and
Shoulders Baby, and This Little Light of Mine. The First Graders followed with: I Am Slowly Going Krazy, A Pair of Fishes, I
Like to Eat, Chicken Dance, I Can’t Spell Hippopotamus, Willum Had
Seven Sons, and Born to Make Music.
All students had a special part to do! It was a
fun day and even more fun night singing to all our
friends and family!
A special thanks to Mrs. Thompson and her art students for the Elephant Projects and the Ocean/Fish
Projects that added much color to our hallways!

Earth Day 2014
The Surf Ballroom & Kinney Pioneer Village
Are the Places To Visit
By Mrs. McGlynn, Mrs. Smith,
Mr. Leinemann, and Miss Odland
On May 12th, the third graders and their teachers will take off bright
and early for Clear Lake to tour The Surf Ballroom. While there they will
see the Green Room, where all the performers check in and prepare for
their concerts. The students will go on a scavenger hunt and learn how
to dance the Twist and the Hand Jive.
Everyone will have fun eating in the booths at The Surf where many
before them had sat and listened to Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, J. P.
“The Big Bopper” Richardson, Del Shannon, the Drifters, the Whitesidewalls and many more musicians from the past. They will dance on the
hardwood floors, surrounded by oceanfront murals reminiscent of milk
shakes and rock and roll and will stand on the stage of American Music!
Soon after lunch, students and teachers will board the bus to visit
the Kinney Pioneer Museum, right next to the Mason City airport. There
they will learn of life on the Iowa Frontier through vintage exhibits and
living history at the museum. It will be a treat to go through the pioneer
village with a one-room schoolhouse, log cabin, old jail, and blacksmith
shop and to see demonstrations of pioneer crafts and trades.
May 12th will be a fun day for all!
“S-s” Is for Sammy the Salamander
By Mrs. Carpenter
Students in Mrs. Carpenter’s preschool class learned about the
letter “S-s”. The AM class got to meet Adam’s pet salamander.
Adam and his dad talked to the class about what Sammy eats
and where he lives. They answered questions from the students.
Fifth Grade
Performing Days
and Talent Show
By Mrs. McGlynn
Throughout the year, the fifth
grade class has been performing
for their classmates. We have had a
large variety of talents shown.
It was fun to watch the students
sing, play piano, play basketball
and volleyball, dance, play their
band instruments, act, and do
gymnastics. These activities were
done in front of their class only.
On May 30th at 2:00 p.m., the
fifth grade will have their annual
Talent Show. Unlike Performing
Day, this Talent Show will be done
in front of the entire elementary.
Parents are welcome to attend.
We look forward to watching all
their exciting choices.
Children’s Author, Julia Cook, Visits Students and Families
By Sarah Kakacek, Elementary School Counselor
Clarion-Goldfield Prep Kindergarten through
fifth grade students were treated to a day with nationally known children’s author, Julia Cook. Ms.
Cook, an energetic educator, counselor, and speaker shared with students a variety of her published
books.
Julia had a way of captivating children’s attention through her dialogue, role-plays, three adorable dogs, and
built-in strategies for addressing life issues such as making friends,
handling anger, and doing one’s best. She shared the writing process with students from beginning ideas to a final published book. With over 60 children’s books published,
students are now able to enjoy several of
them, thanks to the Wright County Charitable Foundation Grant.
Julia Cook was
also guest presenter at the “Buggy
For Books” Prep K
through 2nd grade
family
literacy
night. She shared with parents their role in tackling life issues through the lens of a
child.
Julia’s message is loud and clear, “In order to
teach children you must enter their view of the world.” Julia provided
real life examples and past experiences that have helped her to create
writings for books.
Students enjoyed the evening
in reading stations and were excited to share in their “scooper
prevention” role play to their
parents.
A special thanks goes to TAP
(parent and teacher organization), First State Bank, Town
and Country Insurance, and the
school for making this family literacy evening opportunity possible.
5th Grade Earth Day Projects
By Tanja Jensen, 5th Grade Science
The 5th grade students are currently finishing an
Earth Day unit. As part of this unit they were given an
assignment to choose an activity that demonstrates responsible behavior in helping to preserve our Earth.
The students could choose to become more involved
in the 3 R’s — reducing, recycling, reusing. They could
pick up trash at a park, plant a tree or flowers, switch to
reusable lunch containers, or do any other environmentally friendly project they chose.
Each student needed to complete the project, have
an adult signature for the project, and then present a report about the project to the class; as extra credit they
could provide pictures.
Were They “FROZEN” in the Month of MAY?
By Mrs. McGlynn, Mrs. March, Mrs. Wicks and Miss Jones
On May 28th and 29th, the elementary students and their teachers —
two grade levels at a time — will walk up to the Clarion Theatre to watch
FROZEN. This movie has been a popular movie with students at ClarionGoldfield. They have listened to the soundtrack in many of their classes.
Mrs. McGlynn featured it during Music in Our Schools Month in March.
A BIG thank you to Maggie Solis, Leann Johnson, the Clarion Theatre
Board and to First Citizen’s Bank for helping us to have such an entertaining May Positive!
If you haven’t seen FROZEN, you must! The word around the school is:
“That’s A Movie EVERYONE should see!!”
Dows Students “Fill Bucket”
To Earn Special Surprise
Dows students had 8 days to fill a bucket for a special
surprise. They practiced 4- S- lines — Silent-Straight-Smiling and Still. The classes also shared bucket-filling happenings at school.
The bucket was colored in and on Friday, April 18th the
Dows gym was transformed into a movie theatre with a
large screen and sound system. Dr. Olson, acting as the
usher, lead the students to their seats with a flashlight.
They were treated to the movie, Frozen, along with popcorn and a drink.
The students are continuing to practice 4- S- lines and
bucket-filling actions.

Dows First Graders Take Part
in Art Exchange Project
The first graders at Dows Elementary are
currently involved in an art exchange project
across the USA! Permission was granted for
24 elementary schools to digitally ‘de-colorize’
and slice a copy of ‘The Starry Night’ painting
by Vincent van Gogh into 24 identically sized,
black-line pieces.
Each class was assigned one piece of the
‘puzzle’ and instructed to make 23 copies of it.
Students added color using oil pastels, colored
pencils, markers, and crayons. The copies were
then sent out to the other participating schools.
So far, the Dows first grade class has received
14 parts of the puzzle; the parts have come
from California to Vermont!
Students are finding out that this is going to
be a challenge to put together since each part
has the same rectangular shape!
Dows First Graders
Enjoy Frozen Fruit Treats
Another fresh fruit experience was had by the Dows
first graders as they are shown waiting patiently to make
their concoction with Sherry Reece’s Frozen Fruit Machine!
They could choose bananas, raspberries or both and the
result was a bowlful of deliciousness! The texture was that
of soft-serve ice cream and the flavor was scrumptious!
Thank you, Sherry, for making this fun opportunity
possible!
Dows Preschool Students Take Part in “Statewide Stroll”
By Casey Simmons
On April 9th, parents of Dows preschool students were invited to come on a statewide stroll. Preschoolers
across the state of Iowa were all going to go on a short walk at 10:00 A.M. on April 9th, and they were inviting
their families to come along with them.
Four parents and two younger siblings showed up for a short walk to a park. It was a nice day out and everyone seemed to have a wonderful time.
Dows Students Sample Variety of
Fruits and Vegetables
Dows Employee Does the
“Polar Plunge for Landon”
Our friendly food service staff at Dows Elementary has challenged our taste buds all school year with a variety of fruits
and vegetables that originate from the far ends of the earth!
They are able to offer these foods thanks to the Federally
Funded Fruit & Vegetable Program that our school has qualified for during the past three years.
Social media has been known to have its
bad sides and good sides. Today I am going
to tell you about a challenge that has been
done using the social media for good.
My name is Sherry
Reece and I work for
Dows
Community
School; my daughter
Camryn is a middle
school student at
Clarion. Recently I
was challenged by a
high school friend of
mine to do the “Polar
Plunge for Landon,” a little 6-month-old boy
in Missouri suffering from brain cancer.
Using Facebook this has become a big
hit and people from all over the world has
now done the Plunge and made donations
to help Landon’s family. The shows Camryn
and me the day we did the Plunge at Lake
Cornelia.
You can go on Facebook and see everyone who has plunged and challenged others as well. This has been a huge experience
for me and a huge self reward knowing that
even if you don’t know someone you can
still make a difference.
The students pictured are trying the exotic fruit, rambutan.
Throughout the school year, students have been offered papaya,
pepino melon, kumquats, mangoes,
tangerines, kiwi, avocados, water
chestnuts, turnips, several types of
radishes, lettuces and tomatoes, plus
the usual array of locally-grown items.
Dawn Isaacson,
Dows Food Service Supervisor,
slices red peppers for students’ snack time.
Dows Elementary Students Celebrate Earth Day
2014 Earth Day was observed at Dows Elementary recently with a five-station rotation experience. The different activities offered were; Racing to Recycle, Planting Seeds, Composting 101, Bird Feeders and Our Earth
Construction.
Jake Schaben, Wright County Naturalist, demonstrated how to build and use a fishing pole with common
objects found in a person’s home.
The students thoroughly enjoyed being grouped with multi-aged teammates and are still commenting on
all the facts they learned that afternoon!

Taking the Road

The “Taking the Road Less Traveled
Career Conference” is a one-day program at ISU sponsored by the Program
for Women in Science and Engineering
aimed at giving middle and high school
girls the opportunity to explore science,
technology, engineering and math career fields. Students have the opportunity to hear from professional women in
science and engineering fields, tour the
campus and labs, and do hands-on science activities.

CGHS Students Participate in North Central Conference Art Show
The 26th Annual North Central Conference Art
Show was held in Hampton on Monday April 7. Thirteen students from Clarion Goldfield attended the
conference show with high school art teacher Lori
Lea Carlon.
Originally scheduled for Friday April 4, the show
was postponed due to weather. However, with extra
effort by this year’s organizing teacher, Hampton’s
high school art teacher Jane Haviland, and the administrations of the conference schools to rearrange
the speaker, meal, schedule and presenters, the show
was a success despite Mother Nature’s complications. The honor of being chosen to participate with
the top conference student artists still highlighted
the day.
Clarion-Goldfield senior Megan O’Connor was
awarded the Best of Show award with her hands
sculpture. The project was her solution to the three
repetitions assignment for advanced pottery students this spring. She used her brother Jacob’s hands
as a model during his study hall on three different
days to get it
the way she
wanted it. It
was extra special knowing
that the two
of them had
worked together on the piece
when she won
the award.
