Cats in the Whitehouse
D
uring the Civil War at General Grant’s Camp,
Lincoln spotted an unattended litter of kittens. He
scooped them up in his great coat and took them
back to the White House. He ordered their safety be
assured. Lincoln acquired cats the way one did wandering
the streets, he would bring them to the White House. It is
said they spent their time beneath his desk running across
his feet. Historians say the many litters of America’s first
cats that checked into the White House quarters during
feline-friendly Abe’s office in the 1860s, left not one
record of a name.
Roosevelt, who was given the Nobel Peace Prize for mediating
the Russo-Japanese War, rerouted his guests around the
cat, seated them and then excused himself to retrieve the
feline. “He didn’t want housekeeping to misinterpret the cat’s
intentions, so that evening Slippers was made official,”
Daley says. Official in the sense that the president’s action
elevated the beloved six-toed gray cat to first family status.
Lucy Hayes brought the first Siamese from the American
Consul in Bangkok. The cat was named Siam, endured a
long sea journey to San Francisco and then over land to
Washington. Despite the finest food, the president sent the
ailing kitty home with his personal physician, where she
succumbed to her illness. Her obit appeared in the Boston
Herald, and a letter to Mrs. Hayes states that William
Leduc, US Commissioner of Agriculture. ordered her
body preserved.
Coolidge’s Cool Cats
Littermates Blacky and Tige were cool cats. Blacky spent
his day mousing, while Tige, dubbed the wanderer took
his post draped around the president’s neck as he ushered
the country into prosperity. Once when Tige went missing,
Coolidge says the president was so upset he went on the
radio appealing for Tige’s return. Tige was found by a
guard in the Navy building. Gold-plated tags were put on
the cats for safety, but the pair disappeared a second time;
only Blacky returned minus the gold tag.
President McKinley gained America’s first overseas territories.
Though unconfirmed—a trivia publication insists that First
Lady Ida Saxon named two of four Angora kittens Valeriano
Weyler for the governor of Cuba and Enrique Delome
after Spain’s ambassador. However, during the downturn
of the Spanish American War, Mrs. McKinley came to
loathe the namesake kittens.

President Theodore Roosevelt recounted the antics of
feisty first kitten Tom Quartz who with children, countless
canines and First Cat, Slippers, lived underfoot as the
President oversaw the building of the Panama Canal,
forged national conservation programs and steered
America into world politics. While catnapping, Slippers
stretched across a central rug, blocking the president and
his procession of diplomats from reaching the East Room.

Volunteer of the Month...

L
ongtime country singer/songwriter, Tom T. Hall,
once wrote and recorded a song called “Old Dogs,
Children and Watermelon Wine.” Tom writes
story songs and this one evolved from a chance encounter
with an elderly black man in some Southern hotel bar.
He was quoted in the song as saying, “There’s only
three things in this world that’s worth a solitary dime:
that’s old dogs, and children and watermelon wine.”

all volunteers, and we are so
thankful to all of you who take time
out of your lives to help our cats
and dogs. We implemented the
Volunteer of the Month award
so we can honor those volunteers who
go above and beyond. We received some great nominations,
but January’s Volunteer of the month is Stacey Sedbrook.
Well, I know nothing about watermelon wine. Cats, as
I have told you before, I have lived with cats since my twoleggers adopted me from MaxFund. Living with cats was
always my two-legger’s choice, never mine. I don’t hate
cats, just don’t understand them. Sometimes they lick
me. Do they consider that an act of affection, or that I
need a good bath? I just ignore them, and after awhile
they go away. That’s one of the good things about being
an old dog—everyone assumes that you need more nap
time, and don’t expect you to join in every family activity.
But after all these years I am no closer to understanding
cats except that their breath smells fishy, and that they
seem to spend most of their time trying to look inscrutable.
Do they really know something that I don’t?
Stacey is a dedicated volunteer who cherishes and loves
MaxFund’s kitties. Stacey has been a champion and friend
especially to the cats with FIV and Felv. She spends countless
hours with them and loves them like her own. She also
has been very helpful with the frightened kitties. On many
occasions, she has been known to have a gentle talk with
the cats who need a little extra attention and focus.
Stacey has also expanded her role even more by assisting
in the foster program for the cats. Thanks to her efforts,
many of MaxFund’s older, depressed and sad kitties have
found a home. She has even gotten some of the tougher
cats — the Felv — cats into a home. Because many of the
foster cats are older or depressed, Stacey stays in regular
contact with the foster parents. She calls them in the first
few nights to make sure the cats have adjusted.
The old dog part of the song I really enjoy. It’s so great
to live in a family that loves me for what I am. I’m not
cute and cuddly like a puppy. I don’t have the boundless
energy of the young dogs. I usually don’t go all the way
to the big pond when Dad takes us for a walk, just wait
along the path until they come back, running ahead as
if I had been leading the pack all the way. Sometimes I
can manage a clumsy gallop, holding my ears out to the
side as if I could still run fast enough to make a wind.
Sometimes I just waddle along.
Recently, Stacey has assisted in helping to get our cats featured
on the Pet of the Week segments on Channel 4. She is
working with the producer to enhance the segments even
more. I’m sure we’ll see great things from her participation.
Not only is Stacey a blessing to the cats, but she is also a
wonderful mentor. She is always willing to bake cookies for
MaxFund events or just brighten someone’s day with her smile.

They seem to love me even when I have my senior moments.
Yesterday I got up and walked across the living room.
When I got to the other side I didn’t remember what the
purpose of the journey was. It might have been embarrassing
but my two-leggers rescued me by laughing and hugging
me as if I had done a wonderful thing. The other dogs
(and cats?) were jealous of the attention I was getting.

It’s all good.
Donations were collected at The 4th Annual “Here
Kitty Kitty” event by the LL Group. They raised cash and
lots of pet goods for our furry friends at the Shelter.

Bella’s Rescue Story
Now she needs a good home...
B
eing a chained dog is no way to live life.
Dogs thrive in loving homes where they
are part of the family; not banished to
the backyard knowing only the circled path in
which they exist.
Such was the life for poor Bella. What could
make things worse? Being chained AND pregnant
and no way to keep yourself and your expected
puppies warm and safe. That all changed for
Bella when MaxFund heartily agreed to accept
her into their foster program.

Sweet Bella arrived in the nick of time! She
gave birth to 4 happy and healthy pups just a
few precious days after arriving at her
MaxFund foster home.
Bella is an exceptional mother, and she
and her sweet babies are thriving. They live
INSIDE the home, with plenty of food,
blankets, attention, and LOVE. Just look at
Bella’s happy smile! Momma and babies
will be up for adoption (after spaying and
neutering) in early January.

Chocolate and Your Pets

A
aahh, chocolate! It’s one of everyone’s
favorite foods. We just can’t seem to get
enough! Chocolate is also very tasty to
dogs, though not so tasty to cats, but we all
know that cats are more picky.
Chocolate comes from the beans of a plant
called Theobroma cacao. The Greek word
Theobroma literally means “food of the gods.”
Many ancient cultures used chocolate in their
most sacred religious ceremonies. Chocolate
contains a substance called theobromine, a
potent stimulant that is chemically similar to
caffeine. The stimulant effect was thought to
be a sign that those who indulged were coming
closer to their deities.
Though it may be the food of the gods, chocolate
is very toxic to your pets. Dogs who eat too much
chocolate may vomit at first and/or have diarrhea.
If enough of the chocolate is absorbed, the dog
may start to show signs of hyperactivity, panting,
pacing, restlessness or muscle tremors. With all
the stimulant effects comes a very rapid heartbeat
and even seizures, both of which can be fatal.

French truffles! Keep in mind, however, that a
mere four ounces of baking chocolate or one
pound of milk chocolate can be lethal for a
15-pound dog. Itís not at all unusual for a dog
to consume this amount in a single episode.
What do you do if Fido breaks into the candy
box or steals the pan of brownies? Call your
veterinarian or animal poison-control center
immediately! Be ready to relate the type of
chocolate consumed and the amount, the time
the ingestion occurred, and the approximate
weight of the dog. You may be instructed on
how to induce vomiting and how to monitor the
dogís condition. A veterinarian should check the
dog as soon as possible because treatment can
be given to alleviate some of the symptoms and
better insure a positive outcome.
Dogs do love chocolate, but be kind to your
dog—save the chocolate treats for you and your
sweetheart!
Chocolate poisoning is among the most common
types of poisonings reported by national animal
poison-control centers, probably
because any form of chocolate is attractive
to dogs and it is readily available.
Poisoning is more common around
holiday times, when chocolate products
and candies are more likely to be left out.
Baking chocolate is the most
deadly form of chocolate because
it is the most concentrated form.
The next most toxic form is
semisweet chocolate, followed
by milk chocolate, hot chocolate
or chocolate milk, and white
chocolate. Also, the more
expensive the chocolate
product, the more “real”
chocolate it contains and
thus the more toxic it is.
So if your dog consumes a
Snickers bar, it’s probably

people but I am learning not all
humans are mean. I love it when my
mommy comes home. I just wiggle,
bounce, prance around and then
cover her kisses. It makes her laugh.

years ago. I have a sister now. Her name
is Libby. She is a Corgi. We are really good

remember Chico. I know I will
never forget the first time I saw
him. It was by chance that I
happened to see his

was love at first sight. Never
have I been so affected by an
animal as I was by him. I knew I
had to have him in my life. The
volunteer told me he was frail
but I was allowed to take him
for a walk.
Chico left with us that day.
Despite his age at 13, failing
sight and deafness, Chico
blossomed into a lively companion
who loved to go for walks and
run and play with our other
dogs. Chico was a blessing in
our home for his remaining
eleven months. I will be eternally
grateful to the MaxFund staff for
not giving up on Chico so that I
could have the opportunity to
know him. He was, and will
always be, my special angel.
Chico passed away peacefully on
October 31, 2008.

The Cat’s Diary:
Day 983 of my captivity.
My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly
on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed some sort of dry nuggets.
Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless
must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps
me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again
vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless
body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it
clearly demonstrates my capabilities. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a “good little hunter” I am. Jerks!
There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in
solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the
noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the
power of “allergies.” I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my
advantage. Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my
tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again
tomorrow, but at the top of the stairs.
I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The
dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released, and seems to be
more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded. The bird must be an
informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective
custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now.

Training Older Pets

Whether you have recently adopted an older pet,
or have given up trying to correct your pet’s bad
habits, it is not too late to teach him good manners.
From house training to digging and chewing, the
American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) offers
tips on how to train your problem canine or feline.
“Consistency and positive reinforcement are the
key to training a pet of any age,” says Link Welborn,
DVM, AAHA past president. “In fact, older pets
may be easier to train than puppies and kittens
because they have a longer attention span.”
Teaching an Old Dog New Tricks
House training should be a breeze for older pets
who have less urgency problems and better control.
Keep a close eye on your dog or confine him to
a specific area while indoors. Take him to the
same outside spot every time he goes to the
bathroom. Use consistent encouragement and
give him plenty of praise afterward. Treats can
be used to assist in house training. Make sure
that the treat is given immediately after the pet
has gone potty. If the treat is given when the dog
comes inside, you will train your dog to walk
through a door, not go potty outside.
Solving the Litter Box Blues
Training your older feline companion will be
easier if you use the same brand of litter that
she previously used. If you don’t know what
kind of litter was previously used it is a good
idea to offer several different types. This can be
done by using the disposable aluminum trays
and filling each of them with different litter (the
litter that she digs in and uses most often is the
litter you should use). Please note that cats have
preferences for texture and smell, so buying a litter
that smells better to you may cause your pet to
avoid the litter box.

Older Pets Love Toys Too
Toys aren’t just for puppies and kittens. Older
pets also need stimulating toys and plenty of
exercise to prevent them from digging and chewing
out of boredom. Chewing in kittens is common,
but they usually outgrow it. Consult your veterinarian
if your older cat is still chewing; she may have a
medical problem that needs attention. Keeping a
close watch over your pet so he doesn’t have an
opportunity to misbehave and using consistent
praise to reinforce good behavior should eliminate
most behavior problems.
The key to any training regimen is consistent,
positive reinforcement of the desired behavior
rather than punishment. Never physically punish
a pet; this may lead to biting out of fear, or other
aggressive behavior. Use praise and attention as a
reward when the desired behavior is exhibited
and ignore inappropriate behavior.
If your pet continues to display unwanted behaviors
despite your best efforts, visit your veterinarian
to discuss the problem. Your veterinarian will
examine your pet to rule out medical conditions
that could be causing or contributing to the behavior,
as well as provide advice and additional resources
to help solve the problem. Your veterinarian can
also refer you to a behavior specialist. The most
important thing to remember is to be patient,
you may have years of bad habits to break and
this can not be accomplished in a day or two.
Introducing Commands
Food treats and positive reinforcement will help
your pet learn basic commands such as “sit,”
“stay” and “come.” Plan your commands ahead
of time and make sure that everyone in your
household uses the same commands so your pet
doesn’t get confused. Say the command once
and then physically put your pet in the position
you desire if he doesn’t obey. If you continuously
