Message from the President of SORSA,
I am inspired by radiographers.
It starts with the enthusiasm of the first year student who is eager to explore the new world of
mobile radiography and excited to take the first chest X-ray! The enthusiasm is replaced by
inquisitiveness in the second year followed by mature attributes from the third year onwards. One
often learns about camaraderie in the workplace when colleagues are willing to help out wherever
there is a need. Behind the scenes radiographers are tirelessly walking the extra mile without reward
or glory. Whether it is to negotiate for private coding tariffs or to raise funds for the upgrade of
departments or to serve on branch committees, all the outstanding efforts inspire me.
I hope you have received communication about SORSA activities more often via email and sms and
that you have made use of the information on the website (http://www.sorsa.org.za/). Here you will
find the latest National Council activities that are proof of how we represent your interest on the
highest level. To name a few; the involvement includes the Workload Indicators of Staffing Need,
letters to the Minister of Health and Directorate Radiation control regarding the use and ownership
of X-ray and ultrasound equipment, communication to medical schemes to accept claims from
radiographers, contributions pertaining to Occupations in High Demand, scope of profession,
interpreting of X-rays by clinical associates and very recently negotiation with the Compensation
Fund. There is renewed effort to accredit the South African Journal of Radiography.
I remind you about the theme for World Radiography Day 2015: “Radiographers have a pivotal role
in the justification of medical exposures”. I am convinced that radiographers embrace all the
accoutrements to implement the ALARA principle.
It was my privilege to serve as president for one reason; to experience firsthand that individuals are
willing to burn the midnight oil for the success of the profession. Warmest thanks for the caliber of
work and outstanding contributions in demanding projects to the members of National Council of
SORSA.

Celebrations for the Society of Radiographers of South Africa (SORSA)
Dr Fozy Peer was elected the President of the ISSRT in June 2014. SORSA had a small celebration for
her at the 2nd National Council meeting held in Johannesburg.
Dr Fozy Peer’s contribution to SORSA and now to the international community is of great value.
Below is an exciting moment with the National Council members of SORSA in celebrating her
position as the ISSRT President.

News from Kwa-Zulu Natal
SORSA is really treating their members to the best. The Kwa-Zulu Natal hosted a seminar in the
prestigious Elangeni Tsogo Sun hotel for more than 200 delegates. At this seminar, a range of topics
were presented and the delegates also had an acknowledgment of Dr. Fozy Peer attending and as
the President of ISSRT.
Here we have Mrs. Y Govender from the Kwa-Zulu Natal branch presenting Dr. Fozy Peer with a

The South African Radiographer, is one of the best journals worldwide.
The South African Radiographer is a peer reviewed journal. Out of all the peer reviewed journals in
the world, The South African Radiographer was 583 on the list. The President of SORSA, Belinda Van
Der Merwe, was delighted and indicated that this is a statement we can be proud of.

The SAR and DRPs
All SORSA members receive two SAR per year, which is part of your membership. Articles in the SAR
are available on line. DRPs are available from the Administrative Office in Pinelands.
Remember to maintain your membership to receive these two issues of the SAR.
Radiographers should be encouraged to join SORSA.
News Snippets
On 15 May SORSA responded to the call of the Ministerial Task Team Chairperson, Prof Bongani
Mayosi to provide inputs regarding the INVESTIGATION INTO THE HEALTH PROFESSIONS COUNCIL
OF SOUTH AFRICA.
(SORSA) raised the following concerns:
1 Many of our members find it challenging to rectify incorrect information on HPCSA registration
documents.
2. Members often experience a lack of communication to confirm additional qualification
registration.
3. The duration of the registration process is frustrating. Exchange students visiting South –Africa for
4 months are often back home before registration feedback is received.
4. The payment of the annual registration of radiographers at Higher Education Institutions is
challenging because only individual proof of payment is accepted. The finance department will
not accept one amount with a breakup of all the individual payments linked to DR numbers. It is
challenging for a university to make individual deposits for all health workers.

News update
Historad.nl – the unique website about the historical development of radiotherapy
in the Netherlands Cancer Institute – provides more information than ever and
comes to you in English.
Amsterdam, May 2015
In 2013 the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) celebrated its centennial
anniversary. On this memorable occasion a special website was launched
covering the historical development of radiotherapy in the Netherlands Cancer
Institute, including medical physics and radiobiology, with many detailed stories
and unique images: www.historad.nl. It is a real „must visit‟ for those interested in
the history of radiotherapy and of the Netherlands Cancer Institute in particular.
Dutch and English version
The website fully supports both languages. The language can be selected on the
landing page of www.historad.nl.
Of historical importance
The Historad website describes the development of radiotherapy along a
timeline from 1851 to 2013. The starting point is the establishment of the world‟s

first cancer institute in England in 1851, which set an example and inspired other
initiatives, like the founding of the Netherlands Cancer Institute.
The Historad website covers more than 140 subjects with over 300 photos,
images, short movies and an extensive literature list with sources and
publications. Research into archives and interviews with descendants of pioneers
in radiology has revealed unknown documents, stories and images that give
insight in the historical development of radiotherapy.
“For three years a group of former employees researched the history and
investigated the development of radiotherapy in the Netherlands Cancer
Institute”, explains Professor Marcel Verheij, head of Radiotherapy of the
Netherlands Cancer Institute NKI. “The result is widely talked about and of great
historical value.”
The website also clearly shows the milestones in the history of radiotherapy.
Verheij: “Where in the past, due to limited patient imaging, very large irradiation
fields had to be given, we can nowadays irradiate a tumour to the square
millimetre. The radiation dose can as it were be directed to spare surrounding
healthy tissues. It is special to also see this technological progress and with it the
improvements in the treatment of the patients so clearly in time.”
Influential contribution
In the Netherlands Cancer Institute research and treatment of cancer at a high
level go hand in hand. For more than a century this integral approach has
resulted in an influential contribution of the Radiotherapy department to the
development of new insights and better medical equipment. Both nationally and
internationally the department has an outstanding reputation, due to
contributions to research, education, medical and technical developments and
collaborations
Task group Historad
Historad is the Historical Society of the Radiotherapy department of the NKI. It
started in 2011. Permanent members are Riet van der Heide, former chief
radiation therapists; Vera Reijnders, management assistant head of
Radiotherapy; Henk van der Gugten (coordinator), technical specialist and
former head of the technical group; Bart van Bunningen, radiation oncologist;
Iain Bruinvis, medical physicist and former head of clinical physics and
instrumentation.

World Radiography Day 2015 is celebrated on 8 November each year to mark the anniversary of
the discovery of X-radiation by Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895.

AFROSAFE Championing radiation safety
The responsibility of all involved in patient medical imaging and radiation therapy is to provide the
patient with optimal images and therapy and to optimise and justify the radiation dose. A number of
initiatives such as the Bonn call-for-action and Eurosafe imaging call-for-action were launched to
support these principles. The latest, AFROSAFE Championing radiation safety was added on 18
February 2015. This launch took place in Nairobi, Kenya at the 8th Pan African Congress of Radiology
and Imaging (PACORI). AFROSAFE is the pledge from Africa to promote safe and beneficial use of
radiation though nine actions. Please refer to the attached document for the detailed actions.

Dear Colleagues
On behalf of the ISRRT Board of Management, I would like to thank The Society of
Radiographers of South Africa (SORSA) for sponsoring Hesta Friedrich-Nel to attend
the PACORI meeting. This is very much appreciated.
As you know Hesta will also be representing the ISRRT and I am confident that she will
represent the ISRRT extremely well.
The ISRRT looks forward to continued collaboration between the ISRRT and SORSA
and very much value the participation of your organisation.
I am personally delighted that one of your society members, Dr Fozy Peer, is now
President of the ISRRT. This is very much deserved and I know that Fozy will guide the
ISRRT through what will be a very challenging term of office.

SUMMARY OF NATIONAL COUNCIL MEETING 1/2015

1. Welcome of two new National Council Members
The President, Belinda Van Der Merwe, welcomed two new council members; Sandy
Pridgeon as Diagnostic Representative and Jeanette Du Plessis as Educational Representative
to National Council.
2. Society Membership
Membership in 2014 was 972 in total, a drop from 1135 in 2013. Current membership as at 8
May 2015: 964.
3. Social Media
A guideline document to be drawn up regarding SORSA social media, in terms of legislation
including the POPI Act. To be submitted to EXCO by 29th June 2015.
4. Honorary Membership
This was awarded to 4 members for their special contributions to SORSA, congratulations to
Fozy Peer, Hesta Friedrich-Nel, Antoinette Grundling and Ferial Isaacs.
5. World Radiography Day
Radiographers are reminded to celebrate this event on 8 November each year.
6. RSSA/ SORSA 2015
To be held in Gauteng at the Sandton Convention Center from 9 to 11 October 2015.
7. Journal Accreditation
Investigation for SAR journal to be accredited.
8. Professional Board for Radiography and Clinical Technology
F Isaacs and F Peer to attend meeting on 27 May and give report back at next council
meeting re Scope of Practice, Regulations by Medical and Dental Board and Role Extension
Research.
9. Private Practice Report
A task team was appointed to assist with private practice coding structures issues.
10. Appointing a lawyer for SORSA matters
Smith, Tabata, Buchanan Boyes was consulted with regards to assisting SORSA in legal
issues.
