TYGART VALLEY
Tygart Valley
Randolph County / Elkins
The largest county east of the Mississippi River, Randolph County boasts beautiful winding
mountain roads, clean streams and significant
historical events. Elkins is known as the “28th
Best Small Arts Town in America” and provides
entertainment, lodging, unique shops featuring local artists and services for the area. Easily accessible
from routes I-79, US Route 33, US Routes 250 and 219,
Tygart Valley welcomes visitors to this diverse area.
HERITAGE
The Civil War played a pivotal role in the development of Tygart
Valley and the birth of West Virginia. The Beverly Heritage Center
and Rich Mountain Battlefield provide a glimpse into this historical struggle and its effect on the region. Four historical districts
in the county, including Davis & Elkins College, help preserve
the past of this Appalachian area. Each year the Augusta Heritage
Center offers courses in dance, music, crafts and folklore that reflect the Appalachian heritage.
ATTRACTIONS
Once a thriving railroad town, Elkins has a rich rail history. The
last passenger train arrived at the historic Elkins Railroad Depot in
1959. Leaving from the Elkins Depot, the Durbin & Greenbrier
Valley Railroad offers several scenic excursion train rides. With
rides for every member of the family, special dinner trains, mystery theater trains and THE POLAR EXPRESS™ are particular
favorites. The historic depot houses the Elkins Depot Welcome
Center to assist visitors.
In the evening attend an event filled with a variety of music and
comedy at one of Elkins’ two live performance theaters. The
American Mountain Theater, a Branson-style live variety show,
is located adjacent to the Railroad Depot. The theater also offers
American history shows, Gospel/Bluegrass concerts and a popular
Christmas show. The Gandy Dancer Theatre features a lively variety of music performance and offers a sit-down meal before the
entertainment begins.
The Mountain State Forest Festival, Augusta Heritage Festival,
Ramps and Rail Festival, the Classic Car Show, Helvetia Maple
Syrup Festival and Beverly Days are just a few of the events that
attract thousands of visitors to Tygart Valley each year.
MONONGAHELA NATIONAL FOREST
This 921,000 acre national forest is designed for guests to enjoy year round. Hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, birding,
x-country skiing and snowshoeing are popular activities in this

SOUTH BRANCH VALLEY
South Branch Valley
Grant / Hardy / Hampshire /
Mineral Counties
Known for the South Branch and Potomac
Rivers, the charming foothills of the Mountain Highlands is famed for its winding rivers,
soaring eagles, lush peaks, heritage festivals and
historic towns. Immerse yourself in George Washington and Civil War history, ride the Potomac Eagle Scenic Train through the “Trough” where bald eagles abound or
explore nature at its best. Whatever time of year you visit, you
will find a perfect region for a weekend getaway, family reunion,
or just relaxing by the campfire.
HERITAGE
These four counties have a vast history of conflict with Native
Americans and Civil War clashes resulting in the creation of West
Virginia. The extensive Civil War Trail has more than 15 markers
in this region alone. Romney in Hampshire County (the oldest
town and county in West Virginia) boasts many historic buildings
and Civil War stories worth seeing and hearing. Petersburg and
Moorefield, both founded in the 1700’s as part of Virginia, are the
county seats of Grant and Hardy counties where history abounds.
Mineral County has evidence of indigenous peoples dating from
1,000 to 200 BC.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS/ PARKS AND FORESTS
If you enjoy canoeing, kayaking or rafting, a local outfitter can
arrange an ideal river excursion for all ages. Explore Smoke Hole
Canyon and Big Bend for prize fishing and lazy river journeys. If
you prefer to spend your day on a lake, explore Jennings Randolph
or South Mill Lake for boating and fishing.
The 3,712 acre Lost River State Park is a mecca for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Cabins, camping, hiking, naturalist
programs and horseback riding supply perfect vacation activities.
Open-year round, the cabins provide a great winter getaway. Hardy County hosts nearly 60,000 acres of the George Washington
National Forest where well marked trails and roads promote fishing, swimming, camping, hiking and backpacking opportunities.
The nationally known Dolly Sod Wilderness Area is just waiting to
have you discover their wilderness trails and to gaze at the breathtaking vistas and fall colors.

CANAAN VALLEY
CANAAN Valley
Canaan Valley/Tucker County
Canaan Valley, at an elevation of 3,200 feet, is
the highest valley east of the Mississippi River. Surrounded by 4,200 foot mountains its the
perfect year-round vacation spot for the entire
family. Cool summer breezes and winter snow
create the ideal location for two popular state parks,
three ski venues and the nation’s 500th wildlife refuge.
ADVENTURES/RESORTS
The newly renovated Canaan Valley Resort State Park and Blackwater Falls State Park attract visitors to their lodges, cabins, campgrounds and restaurants in all four seasons. Families enjoy swimming, interpretive nature walks, nature centers, tennis, hiking, bird
watching, mountain biking, chair lift rides and weekend and evening special events. The Canaan Valley Resort championship 18
hole golf course provides an excellent opportunity to hit the links.
This area also attracts thousands of motorcycle riders as they enjoy
the winding mountain roads. When winter arrives, Canaan Valley
Resort State Park, White Grass and Timberline Four Season Resort
open their slopes to downhill and cross-country skiers, snowboarders and tubers.
OUTDOOR RECREATION
Horseback riding, mountain biking, hiking, backpacking and bird
watching are great ways to spend your leisure time in Canaan
Valley. Monongahela National Forest, the Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge and Dolly Sod Wilderness Area offer the backdrop for
these activities.
The Blackwater River provides a breathtaking view as it cascades
over Blackwater Falls and empties into the Dry Fork River. The
Dry Fork, Shaver’s Fork and Blackwater Rivers attract trout anglers all year. Spring snow melt and rains turn the Cheat River
into Class II-IV rapids, perfect for kayakers and rafters looking for
a thrill and provides excellent fishing.
HERITAGE
Established in 1736, Tucker County offers history buffs a diverse
heritage to explore. Henry Gassaway Davis (a U.S. Senator) developed the area by introducing the railroad, coal and lumber industries in the late 1800’s. A melting pot for immigrants, Davis and
Thomas grew quickly and businesses prospered. Thomas has 48
contributing properties on the National Register of Historic Places
and historic beehive-shaped coke ovens. Parsons, another railroad
town and the county seat, boasts the only traffic light in the county.

SENECA ROCKS
SENECA ROCKS
Grant County / Pendleton
Named for the nine hundred foot Tuscarora
quartzite razorback ridge, Seneca Rocks is
just one of the many exposed crags visible in
this geographic location. At 4,863 feet, Spruce
Knob, the highest peak in West Virginia, is one of
the Seneca Rock area’s most visited attractions for
hiking, camping and endless views on a clear day. Underground, Smoke Hole and Seneca Caverns add geological
variety to your visit to this picturesque dominion.
HERITAGE
Native Americans of the Archaic Period were frequent campers at
the base of Seneca Rocks on the Seneca Creek. Two Native villages thrived there about 600 years ago and archeological digs have
produced wonderful evidence of their lifestyles. The U.S. Army
used three of the large regional ridges to train for assault climbing
in 1943 and ’44 in preparation for action in the Apennines of Italy.
The first settlers arrived in the early 1760’s.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS/CLIMBING AND CAVERNS
Discover the origin of the Potomac River in the rural Pendleton
and Grant counties. The North Fork and South Fork of the South
Branch River and the South Branch River all twine through this
beautiful region to form the Potomac River while offering wonderful river excursions, fishing, camping and hunting. The valley
and mountain roads found in this region are particularly popular
with motorcycle riders.
The Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation area is home
to Seneca Rocks, camping, fishing, hiking and mountain biking.
Seneca Rocks attracts amateur and expert rock climbers from
around the world to this local landmark. The Seneca Rocks Climbing School and Nelson Rocks Outdoor Center (which also offers
zip line tours) are there to help beginners explore the thrill of conquering the rocks. Instead of climbing the rock face, many of the
thousands of visitors each year elect to take the walking path from
the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center or a horseback ride to the top.
If you prefer to go underground versus 900 feet straight up, Smoke
Hole and Seneca Caverns offer interesting and educational tours
rain or shine. Be sure to bring a jacket, (54 degrees inside the
caverns), when you trek below to learn about the development of
the caves, stalagmites and stalactites.

HERITAGE
The last significant West Virginia Civil War battle was fought at
Droop Mountain State Park. This first State Park now features
a museum, a scenic overlook and picnic area. To learn more
about the expansive railroad and logging history, two excursion
trains offer a peek into the past. Led by an authentic Shay locomotive, Cass Scenic Railroad travels to the second highest peak
in West Virginia and back to a restored logging town designated
as a State Park. Offering more classic locomotives, The Durbin
Rocket Scenic Train, boarded in historic Durbin, provides a
beautiful river bank ride the whole family will enjoy. When
traveling east or west take the historic Staunton-Parkersburg
Turnpike National Scenic Byway (Us Route 250) and watch for
the Civil War Trail markers.
ADVENTURES/RESORT
Perched atop a 4,848 foot mountain, Snowshoe Mountain Resort is a favorite retreat for skiers and golfers who play the
challenging Raven Golf Club. Snowshoe Mountain offers scenic lift rides, hiking, mountain biking and ATV tours. Almost
every weekend, special events are planned to occupy guests’
leisure time. Shops and an array of restaurants offer a wide
variety of items and food.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS
