world,bothintheformerSovietUnionandelsewhere.
Thegroupdiscussesrecentpublicationsandshowcases
theresearchoffacultyandgraduatestudentsacross
disciplines.Thisyear’smeetingshaveincludeda
discussionofthewritingsoftherecentNobellaureate
inLiterature,SvetlanaAlexievich(pictured),anevent
sponsoredjointlywiththeUCSD“Kruzhok”.Professor
AmeliaGlaserpresentedonliteraryrepresentationsof
the1648CossackUprisinginUkraine.IntheWinter,
UCSDalumnusProfessorElenaAronova(UCSB)
spokeonColdWardatascience;ProfessorMaxParra
(UCSD,Literature)onliteratureandphotographyof
theMexicanRevolution;andProfessorMarciShore
(Yale)onUkraine’sEuromaidan.ThegroupsSpring
Quartereventsincludedco-sponsoring,withProfessor
BabakRahimi,asymposiumonthe1979Iranian
Revolution.
DearFriendsoftheREEESProgram,
The2015-16academicyearstartedwithgratifyingnewsforscholarsofRussiaandEasternEuropewhen
writerandjournalistSvetlanaAlexievich,wasawardedtheNobelPrizeinLiterature.AtUCSD,wehave
workedtointegrateinnovativecontemporarywritersandartistslikeAlexievichintoourundergraduate

curriculumbyexpandingourmajorandminortoincludeabroaderrangeofcoursesandmore
contemporarytopics.Ourprogram,foundeddecadesagotostudytheSovietUnion,iscurrently
restructuringitsrequirementstoallowstudentsmoreflexibilityinstudyingthebroaderregionand
languagesofEasternEuropeandEurasia.
Thisyear,UCSD’sRussianclubhasseenanewsurgeinactivity.ProfessorRebeccaWellsandRussianlanguage
TeachingAssistantTeresaKuruchave,togetherwithalargegroupofUCSDundergraduates,heldregularfilm
screenings,artisticevenings,andcelebrationsoncampus.OurnewundergraduatepeeradvisorSavannah
Hansenhasofferedguidancetonewmajorsandminors.Manyofourrecentgraduatesarepursuinggraduate
studyorembarkingoncareersinrelatedareas.Thisspring,wewelcomedournewcoordinator,Mitzy
Martinez(pictured).Mitzyhasover10yearsofexperienceinhighereducationandhasworkedatbothUCSD
andUCRiverside.SheenjoysworkingwithstudentsandwatchingdocumentariesabouttheRussianEmpire.
Finally,wearepleasedtointroduceourREEESlogo!ThiscomesthankstotheeffortsofCyndiDillonandHelenOlow,the
ManagementServicesOfficer(MSO)oftheUCSD’sInstituteforArtsandHumanities,whichwillbringtogethermanyofUCSD’sarea
studiesandinterdisciplinaryprograms.Thisnewcenterwillsupportseveralprograms,includingREEES,makingcoursesandpublic
eventsmoreaccessibletostudentsandothermembersoftheUCSDcommunity.Iwanttoextendmyheartfeltthankstothe
communitymemberswhohavesupportedREEESatUCSDthroughdonationsandyourpresenceatourevents,toourwonderfulpast
programcoordinatorSallyHargateandournewcoordinatorMitzyMartinez,andtoourfacultyandstudents,whoseintellectual

Lazitsky(Communication),TeresaKuruc(Literature),andKevinHart(Literature)presentedtheir
researchattheCaliforniaSlaviccolloquiumatStanfordUniversityinAprilof2015,accompaniedbyProf.
NataliaRoudakova.BothKurucandLazitskypresentedpapersatUSCinAprilof2016,aswell.Lazitsky’s
presentationsexaminethegenealogyofrecenttensionsbetweenRussiaandtheUSasthey’representedin
themedia.Kuruc’spapersaddressthefunctionofpersonalmemoirinthecontextofcollectivenational
movementsoftheinterwarperiodinEasternEurope.Hart’sworkarguesforreadingNabokovasanautotranslator.UCSDwillbehostingthecolloquiuminSpring,2018.Hartisofferinganupper-divisionseminarinEnglishandRussian
languageworksofVladimirNabokovinSpringof2016.EricaFontana(Anthropology),alongwithco-author

RussianandDisabilityStudiesMergeinIWASNEVERALONE
Dr.CassandraHartblay(CoLEDPostdoctoralResearcher,Dept.ofCommunication,UCSD)received
a2016-2017FISPgranttopursuethedevelopmentandproductionofaperformanceethnography
projectthatlinksRussianStudies,DisabilityStudies,Theatre,andQualitativeResearch.Theproject
bringsadocumentaryplaybasedonethnographicinterviewswithadultswithdisabilitiesinRussia
toUCSD.Dr.HartblayconductedtheinterviewsinpersoninRussianduringfieldworkin2012-2014,
thentranslatedandadaptedtheplayscriptbasedoninterviewtranscripts.InJanuary,Dr.Hartblay
sharedexcerptsfromadraftoftheplayscriptwiththeUCSDcommunityinatablereading
presentedaspartoftheStudioforEthnographicDesignPerformanceEthnographyLabseries.In
February,theplaywasworkshoppedandpresentedasastagedreadingatUNC-CH(Dr.Hartblay's
PhDinstitution),includingtalkbacksessionswiththecastandwithapanelofscholars.Staytunedfornewsaboutafallproductionof
theplay,IWASNEVERALONE(https://cassandrahartblay.com/i-was-never-alone/),onOctober6-9,2016,atUCSD,andavisitfrom
Russiantheateranddisabilityadvocacycolleagues.
UCSDandUCBScholarsDiscuss“CominternAesthetics”atUCHRI
Beginningin1919,the“ThirdInternational”wasatransnationalpoliticalendeavorthat
aimedtospreadcommunismworldwide.Thisenormousendeavorincludedartand
literature,aswellasapoliticalagenda.ProfessorAmeliaGlaser(Literature)and
ProfessorStevenLee(UCBerkeley)collaborativelyconvenedaconferenceatUC
BerkeleyinApril2015ontheaestheticsoftheComintern.Theeventgatheredscholars
fromtheUSandbeyond,includingUCSD’sProfessorLuisMartinCabrera
(LiteraturesinSpanish)todiscusstheliteraryandartisticeffectsoftheCommunist
International.GlaserandLeearecurrentlyeditingascholarlyvolumeonthetopic,and
tothatend,ledaworkshoponthetopicattheUCHumanitiesResearchInstitutein
IrvineinJanuary2016foragroupofgraduatestudents.UCSD’sTeresaKurucwas
amongthoseparticipatingintheweeklongworkshop.

wastheproductionstagemanageroftheplay,whichfeaturedUCSDMastersstudentsinTheaterand
Dance.ThisoutstandingadaptationofChekhov’stimelessplayaboutpropertyandfamilyshowedthe
relevanceoftheturnofthecenturytopictocontemporaryCalifornia.Thewell-lovedstorypresents
themesofculturalfutilityinthecontextofturnofthecenturyRussiaandreflectssocialchangesand

TheSanDiegoRussianSchoolOffersVolunteerPositionsforUCSDStudents
Since1998,theSanDiegoRussianSchool(SDRS–www.sdrussianschool.com)haswelcomedK-12kidsfromalloverSanDiegoCounty
forSundayclassesinRussiangrammar,literature,history,andarts.Theprogressithasmadein2015,inpartnershipwithREEES,has
allowedtheschooltoservemorestudentsinnewways.Thisspring,theschooladdedtwoelectivesthathelpedemphasizeproblem
solving--mathandprogramming,bothtaughtinRussian.Theschool’ssubjectscomplementmatheducationindayschool,andbuild
self-confidenceandreadinesstomeetfuturechallengesinhighschool,college,andprofessionalwork.Inadditiontoregularclasses,
SDRShasstartedaspeakerseriescalled“InsightintoProfessions.”Severaltimesayear,professionalsfromtheRussian-speaking
communitygivepresentationsabouttheirworkandhobbies.Thisyearstudentshavelistenedtolecturesaboutarchitecture,filmmaking,
andteaching.InMarch2015,SDRSstudentsheldareal-timeSkypeteleconferencingsessionwithRussianstudentslivinginKostroma.
ThoughSDRSstudentsandstudentsinRussiahavedifferentschoolsystemsanddifferentafter-schoolactivities,theyfoundalotin
common,especiallyfavoritebooks(theHarryPotterseriesisthecrowdfavoriteamongbothgroupsofstudents).
ThisyearUCSDRussianlanguageundergraduateAliciaRorabaugh,
throughtheUCSDAcademicInternshipProgram,workedwiththestudents
tobetterunderstandthecollegeapplicationprocess.Aliciagaveatalkon
howtoprepareforcollegeandonthealternativesto4-yearcollege
education.AliciaalsoworkedonarelatedprojectwithScrippsInstitute
scientistElenaYulaeva,“GlobalForestLink”.SponsoredbytheWorld
ResourcesInstitute,theprojectaimedatconnectingRussianandU.S.high
schoolstudentsthroughdiscussionofenvironmentalproblemsintheir
communities.Studentscollectedphotosfromneighborhoodforests,
comparedthemwithsatelliteimages,andanalyzedtheirfindingsduring
real-timeSkypemeetings.SaysYulaeva,“Weareveryhappywiththe
