Boclair News
MARCH 2016
Dear Parent / Carer
Welcome to our March edition of Boclair News. It has been a busy few weeks for our young
people and staff and I hope you find the following information helpful.
We are busy preparing for our new S1 pupils following initial events for P7 pupils prior to
Christmas. Our Head Boys and Head Girls will soon visit each primary school to present on the
life of Boclair Academy. Senior staff will then make visits to talk to staff, pupils and parents in
order to ensure an effective transition. This will lead on to our transition days in June where all
our new S1 pupils will visit the school and follow a secondary school timetable. We look forward
to seeing all our future pupils over the next few weeks.
Our S1 pupils have continued to make good progress and it was a pleasure to welcome all our S1
parents to the recent Parents’ Evening. Over the next few weeks all our S1 classes will be busy
on their John Muir work within the local community.
Our S2 pupils are busy thinking about their choices for next session and we look forward to
meeting with S2 parents at the Information Evening on the 17th March. S2 pupils continue to
organise the Boclair Foodbank and we have made a significant contribution to our local
communities again this session.
Our S3 pupils are currently busy with their S3 assessment programme and are working hard to
prepare for the Senior Phase next session. They will soon be completing their S3 Profile where
they will report on their successes over the last three years.
Pupils in the senior school are now focussing on their preparations for national qualifications. The
Prelims provided a good opportunity for young people to reflect on their progress and set
themselves targets for the coming weeks. Supported Study, Spring Revision and Mentoring will
help young people make more progress over the next two months. We wish them well with their
studies and look forward to hearing of their successes later in the year.
As you know we welcome your comments and new information which we can share in future
newsletters. I also look forward to seeing you at one of our many events over the next few
weeks.
Best wishes

Wellbeing at Christmas
Before the holidays our wellbeing groups worked very hard on
creating beautifully festive Christmas wreaths. This project
required focus, patience and attention to detail and all pupils
made a unique striking festive decoration.
Pupils in Wellbeing continue to be involved in a variety of
other activities which help build resilience, confidence and self
esteem.
Christmas in Home Economics
To celebrate the holiday season, the Home Economics
Department enjoyed designing and baking a variety of
Christmas inspired cakes and biscuits.
Here is a selection of photographs illustrating the excellent
work that our pupils produced. Delicious!

The Eco-Classroom Go4SET 2015-16
Go4SET is a science and engineering challenge designed
for S2 where each team is partnered by a company.
Our adventure started on Tuesday the 6th of October when
our team of six left school in a taxi and headed for the
University of the West of Scotland where we met up with our
mentor, Martin Craigen, from Sciencesoft.
During the day we undertook two team building challenges


to build a marble track using only 10 pieces of paper,
a pencil and a roll of sticky tape.
to build a balloon chair without being able to talk.
We won the prize for having the marble track on which the
marble travelled the slowest and we were pleased that our
balloon chair didn't burst when we sat on it.
The rest of the day was spent choosing which project to do
and learning about report writing and planning. While we were
expected to use a Gantt Chart, Mrs Stewart signed us up for
Trello which was far more useful as we could post things up
and communicate with each other at times that suited us.
We do have to admit that we got off to a slow start
as there was so much to do that we weren't too
sure how to begin but once we got going things
developed quite quickly. We used experiments to
help us to decide what to include in our design
and we each had a research task to write about
for our report. Every bit of research led to us doing
more research and our report kept growing. By the
time we were finished it was 120 pages long.
We started by having weekly meetings with Miss
Mooney and Mrs Stewart with Martin visiting us
every so often but as the date of the competition
got closer we met every lunchtime to practise our
presentation.

The Eco-Classroom Go4SET 2015-16 (cont)
Building the model proved to be harder
than we thought it would be but we
somehow overcame the challenge by
working as a team and using pizza boxes
as reinforcement.
When we needed wool for our insulation
Emily and Demelza actually sheared the
wool from a sheep.
A really important part of the Go4SET challenge was
to visit the company we were linked with so Miss
Mooney took us on a visit to Sciencesoft where we
learned how computer programmes can be used to
predict how oil fields will perform under different
conditions. We really enjoyed our visit and learned a
lot.

The Eco-Classroom Go4SET 2015-16 (cont)
Thursday 4th of February was the day of the competition so we packed everything up and headed
off very early in the morning back to the University of the West of Scotland to present our project.
We had to rebuild our display when
we got there which was a bit stressful
but we were finally ready to face our
judges just hoping that the gaffa tape
would keep holding everything
together.
We had to present our project to two sets of judges and talk about what we had done to the Crest
Assessor. We were relieved that nobody forgot their words during the presentation and the Crest
Assessor seemed pleased with our answers to her questions. We then got the chance to visit the
other displays and vote for the project we liked the best.
After lunch, Mr Brown and our parents arrived to view the displays and support us while we waited
for the results.
We were absolutely delighted to find
that not only had we gained our Silver
Crest Awards but we had also won
the Overall Best Project for the West
of Scotland and a place in the
Scottish finals.
We would like to thank Sciencesoft
for supporting us.

S2 Ski Club
In the month leading up to the Christmas Holidays a group of S2 pupils
have been taking to the slopes of Bearsden Ski Club!
An opportunity arose for some of Boclair Academy's pupils to learn a
new skill in skiing, and each Wednesday after school they have gone
from complete beginners trying not to fall over on the little slope, to
competent skiers getting from the top to the bottom of the big slope! Not
only have the pupils started to learn a new sport and skill but they have
also made new friends and built on their self confidence, communication
skills and team work.
The club has been a big success and Mrs Kane will
continue to run the club into the new year.
Well Done!
Mrs Kane
Great Boclair Bake Off
At the end of last year, the school magazine held a Bake Off with the help of the Home Economics
Department. After two preliminary bakes, the final candidates each made a yule log the Tuesday
before Christmas. Every one was decorated and baked beautifully. In third place came Calum Miller
(1D), and in second was Kelly Tang (4C). Our first place winner was Ciara Monaghan (4C) who crafted
a yule log reindeer using fondant and chocolate. Well done to all competitors and thank you for taking
part. The full story and photographs will be featured in this years school magazine, coming soon.

S6 Enterprise & Employability Interview Day!
In Enterprise & Employability S6 students
have been researching career paths. They
found an appropriate vacancy, completed
Application Forms, drew up CVs, wrote
covering letters and prepared for an
interview.
Two entrepreneurs from the public and
private sector of industry came to Boclair
Academy and interviewed all the
applicants.
Although some students felt a little nervous they all agreed that it was a useful exercise, particularly for
those who had not previously attended a job interview.
Both entrepreneurs commented on the high standard of the interviewees. Well done S6!
XL Christmas Fete
On the last Friday of term before the Christmas Holidays the S4 XL Group hosted a Christmas Fete for
the whole school to enjoy. The idea was to create some Christmas cheer by organising games for
pupils to join in with as well as selling handmade gifts and cakes.
The event was a great success thanks to the hard work of the S4 XL Group and the pupils of Boclair
Academy for attending the event. A special thanks also goes to Miss Coote who helped Mrs Kane
make the cakes and biscuits that were sold at the cake stall.
The XL Group raised a total of £274.16! Congratulations!

Trip to Coca Cola Enterprise
On 12 January 2016 the S3 Business Management class visited
Coca Cola in East Kilbride. When we arrived at the factory we
were taken to the Reception area where we watched a short
movie about the production of Coca Cola. We learned about how
the bottles were made, such as where they got the plastic from,
how the bottles were filled and labelled. We also learned about all
the other types of drinks that they made. I found learning about all
the drinks surprising because I didn’t know how many there were!
We also learned about the different career options available and
how much employees were paid which was very interesting.
After the film and power point presentation we went to see the Coca
Cola being made in the factory. We could see the bottles being filled
and queuing up to be packaged. I really enjoyed this part as it made
me feel more involved. It was intriguing watching the workers check
bottles and seeing the machines being used.
Afterwards we went into another room to do a quiz and to learn more
about the factory.
The visit was overall very enjoyable as I felt we all learned a lot about the production process and got a
deeper insight into how much goes into making the products.

Rugby Festival
On the 9th of December 15 boys from S1 and S2 joined with pupils from Bearsden Academy and
Douglas Academy in a rugby festival at West of Scotland Rugby club. Our boys played a number of
games under the guidance of former professional rugby player Calum Forrester. For a number of
pupils this was their first experience of full contact rugby, something they appeared to relish. All the
boys played with courage and displayed growing skill levels. They are now looking forward to taking on
local schools in the new year. '
National AIDS Trust Gold Award
Boclair Academy won a National AIDS Trust Gold Award for our
fundraising for World AIDS Day.
We are one of only four UK schools to do so.

S3 Fire Reach Programme
Over the course of February, six of our S3 boys were lucky enough to take part in the Fire Reach
programme which is run by the local Fire Service. Four boys, Sean Donnelly 3A, Matthew Henderson
and Rahul Hughes 3E and Crawford Campbell 3F spent the week receiving on-the-job training and
experience at Milngavie Fire Station. Both Thomas Fraser 3E and Fraser Stewart 3D took part at
Kirkintilloch Fire Station.
The boys' efforts and positive attitude were commended by the
staff running the programme and all of the boys have now completed
a First Aid certificate as well as a Dynamic Youth Award as a result
of their hard work!
Well done boys- we know who to call if there is an emergency!
S3 Study Skills Day
On Monday 22nd February, we were delighted to host Chris Orton from 'Learning Performance' for
a second year. Chris presented a 90 minute study skills workshop to all S3 pupils over the course of
the day, as well as leading a session for parents and carers after school.
Learning Performance are a well respected provider of practical and motivational events for
students, and all participants were very positive in their feedback. We hope this event has helped
our S3 in preparing for their upcoming BGE Assessments.

S2 Careers Conference—You can do anything!
As part of their preparation for course choice, all of our S2 pupils had the opportunity to take part in a
careers conference on Friday 12th February.
The afternoon began with a presentation from Mr Ronnie Smith from Skills Development Scotland.
He focused on making decisions about course choice and the particular subjects young people
should be considering for different careers.
Following this, there was an opportunity to meet and talk to a variety of invited guests from all
different employment backgrounds.
The young people were given an insight into what each job involved and were able to ask questions
about different aspects of the working world.
The afternoon was a tremendous success and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

BBC School News Report 2016
This session we are running our first BBC School News Report Club, in which S2 pupils are compiling
video based school reports which will be aired live on News Day, 10 March via our school website to
BBC London. In November, all S2 pupils completed a literacy exercise in which they wrote their own
news report, then used Garageb and software in Music Technology to create an audio podcast. This
group have elected to be part of a smaller more focussed team, and are enjoying working on Weather
reports and a project called 'Urban' dictionary.
Last week, BBC Scotland invited
our team to go to Pacific Quay
studios to take part in Live News
Day on 10 March. They will take
over the BBC Learning Twitter
account for the day and observe
and chat with journalists and
reporters throughout the day. The
team are very excited about this!
They are following class 2D on
their Foodbank project throughout
March and reporting on the hot
topic of curriculum structure. You
can view these video based
reports and read more about the
groups' work on the dedicated
School Report page on the school
website, from Thursday 10 March.
East Dunbartonshire IMS Concerts
A number of Boclair Academy pupils have attended weekend music courses at Gartmore House this
term to prepare for the upcoming end of term concerts. The groups involved are String Ensemble,

Modern Studies London Trip 2016
Early on Thursday 4 February this year 35 S3/4 pupils
representing the Modern Studies department, along
with Mr Millar, Mr Higgins, Mrs Kane and Ms Rankine
set-off on the annual Modern Studies London Trip. An
earlier than usual departure, due to floods before
Christmas in England, saw us leave at 6.30am! Most
pupils showed up half-asleep but some had made the
extra effort, with a few of the girls having been up
since 4am to ‘get their faces on’.
After a bus-train-coach journey we settled into our hotel right next to the
impressive Wembley stadium.
From then it was into the West End for a fantastic production of The Lion King.
On Day 2 we negotiated the London Underground for the first time. Surrounded by
a sea of commuters we made our way to Westminster and onto the London Eye for
panoramic views of the city. After hopping off the ‘eye,’ it was a quick bite to eat
and a hard days shopping for most on Oxford Street. The more adventurous and
wacky headed off the strange world of ‘Ripley’s Believe it or not! London’, a
museum of the weird, wonderful and unbelievable, next to the world-famous
Piccadilly Circus. Later that evening it was out to the Hard Rock Café for burger
and chips (or veggie options) at the world famous café surrounded by rock ’n roll
memorabilia before heading home for a well earned sleep.
On Saturday we returned to Westminster to visit the seat of power in
the UK political system - Westminster Palace, home of the Houses of
Commons and House of Lords. Our tour allowed us to marvel at the
splendour of the Augustus Pugin and Charles Barry designed building
as we roamed the corridors where the Queen, Prime Ministers and
Presidents have walked and made speeches and where figures such
as William Wallace and Guy Fawkes have stood trial.
Afterwards, some hit the shops of Oxford Street, again, while others struck out for Tower Bridge,
The Tower of London and the Tate Modern, Museum of Modern Art. Eventually, after a group of S4
who had got their geography and Google-map reading skills mixed up, met up with us in Covent
Garden, we were ready to eat, again! It was a tired and exhausted group who dragged themselves
back to Wembley on Saturday night to watch ‘Zoolander 2’. Quite a lot won’t remember this as there
were several of us who fell asleep. Either we were too tired or ‘Zoolander 2’ wasn’t up to much.
By the time Sunday rolled round we were off for a whistle-stop visit to Camden Market before the
long train back to Glasgow and home, everyone happy to be facing a couple of days off school to
recover.

Scottish Schools Swimming Championships
Congratulations to Boclair Academy’s Zoe MacDonald and Blair Johnstone who recently competed as
part of the East Dunbartonshire Schools Team in the Scottish Schools Swimming Competition at
Tollcross International Swim Centre .
Zoe and Blair earned their place at the Championships by recording competitive times at the East
Dunbartonshire heats last October.
The team picked up an impressive
13 medals with Zoe winning gold in
the 100m Breaststroke and Blair winning
silver in the 50m backstroke.
Zoe is one to watch in the swimming
world, recently recording a time that
qualifies her to compete in Olympic trials.
Councillor Anne Jarvis, Chair of the EDLC Trust, extended her congratulations to all who took part in
the competition. She said: ―To pick up 13 medals in such a competitive arena is a wonderful
achievement. And for Zoe to perform so brilliantly that she can now compete on an international stage
is fantastic news for her. ―
World Cheerleading Championships
Everyone in the PE Department would like to congratulate Keira Campbell
on her outstanding achievements so far in cheerleading. Keira has shown
that with hard work, it is possible to perform at the very top level, and we
would like to pass on our best wishes and good luck to her for the World
Championships.
It is always pleasing to see pupils from our school doing so well, and
Keira is the latest in a long line of Boclair Academy sporting success
stories.
Well done, and good luck!

Consultations (cont.)
While the survey was positive in many areas, the main area of school life where we were not doing
well was in how we used the views of parents to impact on the work of the school. To address this,
since last session we have sought and acted upon the views of parents when deciding on the 33
period week and when shaping the curricular model for S3 pupils moving into the Senior Phase of
their education. We have also listened to the views of parents outlined during Parents’ Evening
Surveys which told us we need a more consistent approach to Homework. Departments across the
school are now working hard to achieve this. We now regularly seek the views of parents during
Parents’ Evenings and we regularly discuss issues with the Parent Council.
Later in March we will undertake another whole school survey to capture the views of parents, pupils
and staff. Following this we would like parents to join us for focus group meetings during the month
of May to discuss issues related to particular year groups.
Please look out for information on this in the next few weeks and take the time to respond. The
views of all our stakeholders are important to us as we continue to improve the education provision
in Boclair Academy.
SQA Exam Leave
Pupils in S4, S5 and S6 will have exam leave during the Month of May from Thursday 5th May until
Thursday 2nd June. In order to accommodate the exam times issued by the Scottish Qualifications
Authority there will be a temporary change made to the timing of lunch hour in the school.
Throughout the exam diet all lunch times will be from 12.35 pm until 1.25 pm. This means that on
Monday and Tuesday, our longer days, there will be three lessons after lunch rather than the two at
present.
Cafeteria Price Increase
The price of a school dinner will increase from 1 April 2016 to £2.35

Pupil Parliament
Our annual Pupil Parliament met together earlier this month to
consider major issues of school life.
The Parliament was well led by our Senior Prefect Team of
Andrew Peoples, Rachel Tang and Morgan Dow.
Pupils from S1 to S6 worked together in mixed year
groups to discuss a variety of topics. They reflected on
the school’s curriculum consultation, discussed how to
improve litter around the school, discussed areas of
improvement for next session and spent time
discussing features of good learning.
All their ideas will be collated and shared with staff and the Parent Council over the course of the
next few weeks and will be used to inform next session’s improvement plan.
Well done to all out delegates for their active contributions.

Thank you for all your support with school uniform this session. The vast majority of our young people
are setting high standards and they have been looking fantastic over the last few weeks. As you know
school uniform must be worn every day by all pupils.
School Uniform consists of :
School blazer
White blouse or shirt
Black jumper or cardigan
School tie
Black trousers or skirt
Please note that hooded tops, coloured tops, leggings and jeans are not part of the school uniform.
Over the next few weeks we will be working with the young people and families on this important area
of school life and we would ask for your continued support in ensuring young people dress
appropriately for school every day.
