Manorview Hotels & Leisure Group have
meticulously restored and renovated this
beautiful building back to it’s former glory.
As this is a listed building, we wanted to
enhance and show it’s heritage and beauty.
Therefore, we restored the Commemorative
display of previous achievements and
honours. In addition, all of the original
sandstone has been restored along with
the front gardens to pay homage to Bride &
Grooms who used to have their ceremonial
wedding pictures in our gardens.
Boclair House is one of Bearsden’s most
magnificent buildings, situated at the foot
of Boclair Hill and surrounded by 2 acres of
beautifully landscaped gardens.
This magnificent red sandstone Tudor Gothic
Mansion is a Category B listed building and
has been a local landmark since being built by
the Buchanan sisters in 1890.
The two-story building boasts a castellated
tower and square side towers, not to mention
it’s most distinguishing feature; a series of
arches to the front, creating a covered walk
reminiscent of romantic Italian cloisters.
OUR HISTORY
The Buchanan Retreat (Boclair House)
was opened in 1890, the outcome of the
generosity of Misses Buchanan of Bellfield,
Ayrshire who wished “indigent and infirm
burgesses of Glasgow of the surname of
Buchanan and of the age of 60 years complete
and upwards’ to be ‘lodged, maintained and
clothed in a comfortable and respectable
manner’. The restriction to people called
Buchanan had to be removed because of the
lack of applications from qualified persons of
this name. The home accommodated 14 men.
In 1960 the Town Council acquired the
property, and two years later H.R.H.
Princess Margaret performed the opening
ceremony 31st May 1962, accompanied by
her Husband Lord Snowdon of what was
then the new municipal buildings.
