Sixth Form
Year 13
Finally all of the exams are over and we now all await the results in August! Year 13 have left but it has
been good to still see some of them around the place as they have really enjoyed their two years in the
Sixth Form. Once again, thank you for being such a great year and for all of your help and support. I wish
you all the best of luck and hope that you stay in contact.

Year 13 Leavers’ Week and Staff v Sixth Form Rounders
Year 13 had some excellent fancy dress costumes during their last week in school and thoroughly enjoyed
their Leavers’ lunch. Also, it has been a tradition for a long time to have a staff v Sixth Form rounders
match. Despite the Year 13s outnumbering the staff, the staff won convincingly!! The game was played in a
very good spirit and the enthusiasm of the Year 13s made up for their loss! Many thanks to the spectators
from all of the other years and to the staff who played as I am sure the girls really appreciated it!
Year 12
Year 12 have been back in school having finished their AS exams. They have spent a couple of weeks in
school starting A2 work before having their work experience week. All of the girls seemed to really enjoy
the experience and many thanks to Mr. Crump and Cat Rowe for organising the week! The Year 12 biology
group has also been on a field trip to the beach for their annual ecology day. Lexie Pan has been involved
in Greenpower racing in London and was the second female to finish. Well done Lexie!
Leavers’ Ball
Heather Rothney and Iynaiya Afzal organised this year’s Leavers’ Ball and did a fantastic job. It was held at
the Alverton Manor Hotel; the food was great and the room looked fantastic. It was good to see so many
staff and thank you to the Year 12 girls who managed to attend. Everyone had a fantastic time and thank
you to Mr. Pooley for being a fantastic DJ and to all of the girls who made it a memorable evening. Thank
you to Heather and Iynaiya for all of their hard work.

Sports Report
What incredible results we have had this year. The PE staff would like to thank all the girls who have taken
part in the many sports we have competed in and we would like to say how proud we are of all your
achievements. Here are the last of the results for this year.
Wednesday 24th June National Preparatory School’s Athletics Championships at Birmingham
Prep 6: Lucy Day 800m finished 20th in a very fast race with a time of 2min.55 sec again her best time for
the year. Javelin finished 14th with a throw of 13m.29. Izzie Leigh 1500m finished 19th with her best time of
5min.58 sec. Well done to all Athletes for reaching and competing in a very high class championships
against schools from all over England. Our thanks to the Parents who came and supported.
Year 7: Evie Roberts Shot 7m.71 a little off her best finished 9th. Discus 17m.66 again a little off her best
throw but she still finished 12th. Evelyn Robertson 800m finished 17th in a very competitive race with a time
of 2min.54 sec. her best time this year and in High Jump cleared 1m.33 a little under her best height but
finished in 5th place.
Year 8: Nikole Fielding 75m Hurdles 11th time of 13min.33 sec. 200m 11th, time of 29min.10sec. Nikole
achieved her best time in both events. Dotty Squibb High Jump 1m.30, 13th. Javelin 19m.54, 18th. Dotty
was close to her personal best height and distance.
Cornwall Athletics at Carn Brea
We had several athletes who competed in this event with three athletes who won their event to become
County Champions.
Yoyo Barnsley winner of the 1500m.
Emily Williams winner in the High Jump her new Personal Best of 1m.55.
Layla Stuart winner of the Javelin with a new County Record of over 37m.
Javelin: Amy Shaw 3rd 21m.86.
100m: Amy Shaw was 4th in her heat with a time of 14.4 and Katie Rapo 7th in her heat 16.0.
75m Hurdles Nikole Fielding 3rd with a time of 13.9.
Long Jump: Emily Williams 5th 4m.22 and Molly Rodda 10th 3m.31.
Shot Putt: Thea Watkins 4th 8m.51 and Nikole Fielding 5th 8m.44.
Discus: Thea Watkins 3rd 18m.19.
Well done excellent results all round.

Out of 26 schools taking place we had several other girls finishing in the top ten positions. Year 7 team
finished 5th and Year 8 finished 6th.
Year 7 & 8 Aegon Tennis v Cape Cornwall
We played 4 single matches and 2 double matches winning all matches: Dotty Squibb won 6-0; Martha
Ellemann won 6-0; Rose Pringle won 6-0; Katie Humphreys won 6-0.
Doubles Matches: Dotty & Martha won 6-2; Rose & Katie won 6-0.
Year 7 & 8 Tennis League at Bodmin
Three double pairs played beating Penair, Humphrey Davy & Bodmin and narrowly losing to Wadebridge.
This meant we finished 2nd overall.

Sports Days
We have had three amazing sports days in the last week of term in fabulous weather. We started with PrePrep and Nursery on Monday where we saw our future athletes having fun and games. On Tuesday Prep
School competed in a more serious level but also having a great fun afternoon. Then on Wednesday,
Senior Sports day in slightly cooler weather was a huge success with the highest number of competitors
from each year taking part. We had some great results in all age groups. We would like to thank all the staff
and students who helped to make these events so successful. Also not to forget a big thank you to all the
parents that came and supported the girls. Your support and encouragement helps make sports day
special.
The PE staff wish you all a happy holiday. Keep fit and well and we look forward to working with you
all next year.
Prep School
We seemed to head to the end of the academic year at breakneck speed, filling every
moment with activities and achievements. We had our usual events and some new
ones thrown in for good measure.
Pet Show was full of proud and knowledgeable owners showing
off their pets, ranging from guinea pigs to turtles. This was
combined with the amazing creativity of the ‘produce’ part of the
show where kiwi fruits were magically turned into hippos and
aubergines into zebras.
The Willow Field was a riot of colour, creativity and competition
as Prep School experienced the thrill of a day at the races at
our very own Ladies Day. The girls created some truly imaginative designs
transforming paper plates into one of a kind hats to complete their glamorous
ensembles. With confetti splashing water jumps, a decorate your hat relay and even a
champagne waiter challenge they really got into the racing spirit of Royal Ascot as
well as exploring their inner fashionistas.

The good weather ensured that all three of our sports days went
off without cancellation with the girls showing off their great
talents, determination and sports(wo)manship. It was
particularly lovely to see the children from Naturally Learning
joining in with Pre-Prep sports.
There were also some end of year trips: Prep 4 spent a morning at a Viking workshop in the Maritime
Museum, followed by an afternoon rock pooling. Prep 1 and Reception went to Pendennis Castle and then
they too spent the afternoon on the beach. Prep 2 went to Cornish Gold to decorate mugs as part of their
tea project, Prep 3 had a tour around the Cathedral and to Geevor Mine, and Prep 5 went on an art trip to
St Ives.
The girls decided that they wanted to raise money for Nepal, and specifically the
‘Schoolinabag’ project. They held a ‘Bring and Buy Sale’ in school and then Prep
6 tried to take the rest of the stock to sell at the Falmouth Car Boot Sale. They
got there to find that it was cancelled because of the weather, but Penryn Asda
came to the rescue and the girls raised a staggering £470 over a very fruitful
afternoon. Altogether we have raised enough money to send 110 school bags to
children in Nepal.
We drew the term to a close with our Speech Day where we reviewed our busy
year and said good bye to the Prep 6 girls.
Boarding
The second half of the summer term has been a busy and fun-filled one in the boarding houses. Once the
exams finished, everyone had more time to relax and get involved in weekend trips and we ran several
successful ones, especially our big Thorpe Park adventure! This daytrip took dedication from our boarders,
who had to wake up at 4am to make the long journey on the minibus, but it was well worth it and everyone
came back happy and excited.
In addition to this, we ran our regular SUP boarding beach trips and a host of food related activities inside
the houses, from chocolate fondue nights, ice-cream factory, many baking sessions (the latest deserts
mastered by the Rashleigh girls are white chocolate ‘blondies’ and banoffee pie), to more S’mores BBQ
nights under the stars. Last weekend, six girls took part in the Rainbow Run in Newquay, during which
participants get pelted with paint power as they run the course. We have also had a ball, literally, getting
glammed up for the Year 11 and Sixth Form Balls – held at The Alverton & St Michael’s Hotels respectively.
They found the house lounges being transformed into beauty salons and the boarding staff into beauticians!

Awards and achievements
LAMDA results
Congratulations to everyone who took their LAMDA speech and drama exams this May. The results have
just been published and are excellent, with almost all the girls achieving Distinctions and very high Merits.
The range of subjects covered included Public Speaking, Acting, Devised Drama and Verse and Prose and,
at the higher grades, marks attained go towards UCAS points for university entry.
UKMT Junior Maths Challenge
Pupils at Truro High School achieved two golds, two silvers and nine bronzes in this year’s UKMT Junior
Maths Challenge. Over 250 000 pupils from across the UK sat the Junior Maths Challenge with roughly the
top 6% receiving a gold certificate, the next 13% silver and the next 21% bronze. Approximately 6,000 of
the top students are invited to sit a follow-on competition. Heather Hughes was awarded a Gold certificate,
Best in Year, Best in school and qualified for the Kangaroo follow-on round, we are awaiting the results of
this.
In School
Summer Exhibition
For the first time, the art, textiles, photography and video
work of Truro High pupils from Year 7 upwards was on
display in all four of the rooms that make up the Art
Department on the Daniell Road site.
Themes included nautical, the seven deadly sins and
vanitas and the many different ways in which these topics
were explored and interpreted resulted in a fascinating
exhibition that clearly demonstrates an extraordinary wealth
of talent.
“It’s really important that parents, friends and relatives are able to see just how hard the girls are working
and how very creative they are,” said Head of Art Mrs Tutin. “They can try their hand at any media,
including video and I never ceased to be amazed at some of the ideas they come up with. It really is
impressive.”
Several of Year 11 Amani Hart’s portraits greeted visitors at one of the exhibition entrances – including two
of her late father Paul. “I’ve collected lots of photos of Dad because portraiture really interests me and our
topic was ‘time’,” she said. “I’ve used the face fade technique found in the Time Traveller’s Wife because it
gives a sense of him being there whilst not being there. The portrait that hangs next to his is a copy of a
Franco Clun drawing – he’s one of my favourite artists.”
A ‘Grand Opening’ was hosted by members of the PTA on the evening of Monday 15 June with drinks and
canapes and a tea-time event was held the following day from 4-5.30pm, so that younger girls, parents and
staff could come and see the work.

CreateEd exhibition
We have had fun displaying our GCSE and A Level Textiles
and Art work at a professional exhibition for schools at
Falmouth University’s Design Centre, as part of the CreatEd
Exhibition. As usual our Textiles work was among the best
on display with Kitty Rowland gaining a Commendation for
her Textiles work; she was in good company with Truro
High securing the Fine Art award for Amani Hart and team
Silvah gaining the Business and Young Enterprise award.
Our exhibit was well attended at the Private View with Alice
Soutar's costumes for "Cats the Musical" proving a
favourite, particularly the way she bought the pieces alive
with her film of Giselle Parnall and Chloe White dancing to "Love-Cats" in role as Macavity and Grizabella.
We had a strong GCSE collection inspired by other cultures, which was a popular brief among the students
this year, with Mia and Chloe's garments relating to African and Inca cultures, showing good use of our
excellent printing facilities at Truro High: the Sixties inspired pieces gathered a lot of praise; Lucy Murley
and Izzie McLean took their Sixties icons into space-age fabrics and Rebe Winn interpreted our theme into
a Brit-Pop piece with clever use of recycled denim. Another Eco-fashion piece was made by Lydia Lower
who won the subject prize for her clever use of recycled pillow-down inspired by Darwin and his work on
birds in the Natural History Museum.
Among the Art work Amani’s portrait of an aged man was a stand-out piece as were Georgia Wildgoose’s
dragon images and Yoyo’s coloured portraits. Rebe’s photography on glass looked amazing on a light table
and the whole exibit was fresh, spacious and of a professional standard.
Truro High was the only school to win in two categories and we are very proud as we were competing with
much larger Cornish schools and colleges!

Senior School Activity Days
This year our traditional Activities Days, two days of wholesome fun to mark the end of exams,
mushroomed into six days. We were delighted to have so many members of staff keen to offer the girls a
new experience within their subject area or to enthuse them with one of their own passions.
The week was sandwiched by two trips to Trevone for Year 8, led by our intrepid Geography Department.
This year, the weather was infinitely kinder than last and the girls returned full of smiles, having enjoyed
practical work relevant to their Year 8 course and, no doubt, the odd ice-cream.
The Beach theme continued on Thursday when Mrs Tregay used her charm and her “little black book” to
organise a value-for-money surfing day for Year 8 at Fistral Beach. Mr Hunter, our former Head of Art, also
provided a Beach Art experience. The following morning the Year 8s were noticeably suntanned and
happily exhausted.
We often speak of preparing our students to work in our local and in the global economy and we
had flavours of both throughout the week. Mr Dean and his team, helped by parents and
Governors, oversaw a fantastic National Women Engineering Day during which the girls learned
how engineers work in maritime and military contexts in the Duchy.
Our Jewellery Workshop days also saw the girls using tools to make their own pieces, aided by a
local jeweller Anna Pope. In the midst of all this, the Year 7s helped Mr Bennett blow up the RP
Room and enjoyed a day of team-building exercises, making an indescribable mess in the
process – always a sign that fun has been had!
This year we wanted to offer the girls more genuine choice for their big trip out of school. The
visit to Flambards was hugely popular and a great time was had by all. Even the staff seem to

have come to terms with some of those rides! A small group of girls represented us at the Regatta in
Falmouth where Melissa Mullen won the Endurance Cup, and a third group also visited Newquay Zoo with
the staff who just “don’t do” rides.
Mr Brand also organised the Year 9 Enterprise
Challenge Day, a Business Day, giving the girls
hands-on experience of the challenges involved in
starting up a small company.

two outside Young Enterprise Advisors - Mrs Gill
Hall from Oxford Innovations and Mrs Katie Wild
from Cornwall Chamber of Commerce. The adults
were all impressed with the way all the girls
became involved and rose to the three
challenges - design and manufacture a set of
(three) crackers, launch a new perfume or energy drink, and open a new (themed)
restaurant!...They had help, and materials provided, but it was a full-on day!

We hope to have struck a balance between fun and learning. We discovered that a busy
week can also be energising and that a change really is as good as a rest. Mrs

Chocolate welding provides career inspiration
Using five white chocolate bars to build
structures capable of bearing more than fifteen
kilograms of weight was just one of the activities
on offer at our day-long event to mark National
Women in Engineering Day.
122 girls from schools across the county took
part in a range of interactive sessions designed
to excite their interest in engineering as a
career. To help them discover the many
opportunities on offer, representatives from a
number of different businesses and
organisations were on hand to chat about their
own experiences and demonstrate what their
jobs involved.
Dr Rachel Nicholls-Lee of Falmouth-based Mojo Maritime gave the day’s keynote speech before joining
colleagues and students in one of the laboratories to build a tidal barrage. Now working in the renewables
sector, she explained that she had wanted to become an architect before careers advice when she was
seventeen inspired her to do a degree in naval architecture at Southampton University instead.
“It was really hard work – I describe it as rocket science plus water,” she said. “When I moved out of
academia and into the engineering industry I did encounter sexism and sometimes still do. As a woman
you have to prove yourself every step of the way.”

Sarah Lowndes is a project engineer with LM Handling in Tolvaddon Business Park, Camborne.
Responsible for coordinating lifting and handling equipment for offshore piling and subsea construction
works, she did a degree in mining engineering after a week’s work experience when she was fifteen.
“I’m originally from Nottingham but moved to Cornwall to study at Camborne School of Mines,” she said. “I
love what I do and think I get treated better because I’m a woman. I’m currently the only female in our
team.”
Girls in Years 8 and 9 from local secondary schools were invited to take part including Falmouth School,
Penryn College, Wadebridge School, Pool Academy and Richard Lander School.
Out and about
Cornwall Schools Sailing Regatta
On Wednesday 24 June Melissa Mullen, Maya Brookes, Martha Ellemann, Justine Pellew-Harvey, Zoe
Beckly, Holly Owers, Rose Pringle, Roisin O’Halloran and Nancy Ellemann competed in the Cornwall
Schools Sailing Regatta. Warm weather and a perfect wind gave everyone an amazing day’s sailing on the
Carrick Roads near Restronguet – the same waters that Ben Ainslie learnt to sail.
This is the second year running that a pupil of Truro High School has taken home The Endeavour Cup
which was won this year by Melissa Mullen.
Formula E event
Truro High School and Harris Academy Morden were one of only 12 school teams competing in the
Battersea Greenpower Formula E event.
Three girls from Truro High School (Lexi Pan, Chloe
White and Gisele Parnall) and three boys from Harris
Morden took part in the race on at Battersea on 27
June. The driver, Lexie Pan really enjoyed the
experience and said “working as a team with people I
have only just met was a something I really enjoyed”.
Also “I had not realised how big the Formula E event
was and I felt it was a great honour to be asked to
drive”.

The team really looked forward to the race at Battersea. Mr Dean and a
group of parents gave up their time to help prepare us for this event. They
helped to build the car, test it and race at Goodward race track in another
Greenpower event. The parents from Truro High made them feel like real
race drivers; we had a backup team of parents cooking bacon and
sausage sandwiches all day to keep us in tip top condition!”
Chloe White was fortunate enough to meet the first woman Formula E
driver Simona de Silvestro who drives for Team Andretti in the pits.
Lexie Pan had hoped to meet Steven Lu from Team China but this was
not possible, so Mr Lu has invited her to their Head Office in Beijing and
to Donington Park to their test day.
Mr Mallin, Head of Science at Harris Academy Morden said “The Greenpower events have been a great
experience. We are a London school yet we are working with an Independent school from the South West
of England. We are sharing resources, expertise and time to provide large numbers of students the chance
to build and race Formula E cars. At the same time students are getting really excited about the possibilities
engineering can bring now and in the future.
Schools are constantly looking for activities and events to engage students in Science, environmental and
engineering projects. The combination of a race car, driving and the possibility of travel abroad; well I think
we may have just have found a magic combination!
We have been very grateful to Mr and Mrs Dean and the parents of Truro High School for looking after our
boys as well as their generosity. Harris Academy Morden are committed to making this partnership work
and we look forward to you racing with us in the London races and joining you to race in the South West.”
Solar Challenge as part of Greenpower Day
Two teams of Year 9 girls comprising Georgiana Tregunna, India Pascoe Buchanan, Sophie Rowe, Rosie
Hastings and Giselle Aguer Martinez raced to 1st and 2nd place in the Solar Challenge, defending our titles
from last year. Solar cars were constructed and judged on design and speed. Judges commented on the
impressive teamwork, and their excellent approach to problem solving. The final was incredibly close with
the head-to-head race between ‘Beans’ (Georgie and India) and ‘Truro High Racers’ (Sophie, Rosie and
Giselle), with ‘Beans’ just snatching victory and winning by 1 point overall. The most taxing part of the day
was coming up with the name for their car. Clearly, all Georgie and India’s brainpower had gone into
engineering the car, as all they could come up with for the name was ‘Beans’! Mrs Hallam
On Trend in Truro
Mrs Sam Salvoni, of Plum boutique in Truro, selected three skirts made by
Year 10 students to feature in her window display. From left to right they are
the work of Jasmine Marsh, Alice Wilson and Alice Wilson. Sam reported a lot
of interest in the window display.... Several people came into the store asking
to buy them! We definitely have some sought after designers of the future here
at Truro High and are looking forward to holding a Fashion event in the
Autumn Term with Mrs Salvoni and a number of local designer shops here at
Truro High School.

Road to Wimbledon
We are delighted to report that Daisy Chapman won the HSBC Road to
Wimbledon County Finals at Newquay Tennis Centre on 12 July and will now
represent Cornwall and Truro High School at the National Finals to be held on
the grass at the Wimbledon All England Club 10 -15 August!

THS Calendar and photo competition
The PTA have kindly agreed to run a photo competition for all girls to
enter of their favourite animals: pets, insects, sea creatures, wildlife,
birds, equestrian and of course not forgetting farm animals! All girls of
any age can enter any or all categories and the winning entries will be
displayed in the Truro High School 2016 calendar and the overall winner
will receive a selfie stick.
Please email your photos to [email protected] as a jpeg and include
your name, category and age. Closing date for entries is Monday 14
September 2015. We would like to have these printed by half-term and
there will be the opportunity as before, of having your name and birthday included in the calendar for a
small charge. All profits raised will go towards supporting projects for the benefit of the girls.

Old Girls’ Association news
Truro High School Reunion: Saturday 27 June 2015
Years 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1980 (35th Anniversary!)
With former pupils travelling from as far as Dundee and Dubai, Truro
High pupils who left the school between 1976 and 1980 had the rare
opportunity to catch up with old friends, rekindle fond memories and
see how much had changed at their 35th Anniversary Reunion.
45 Old Girls and 4 retired members of staff assembled in the
school’s foyer before taking the opportunity to look around their old
classrooms and enjoy an anniversary lunch in the dining room.

Renowned Opera Singers, Naomi Harvey and Rachel Hallawell, both attended the school before going on
to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. They reminisced about the influence that Music
Teacher, Joy Perry had on their school days and their future careers.
Naomi said: “I truly believe that the school was the making of me. I was a very shy, quiet little girl when I
started at 8 years old. Joy was a big influence on our lives; she was the one who encouraged me to start
singing.”
Rachel said: “The school gave me tremendous confidence because it helped me foster a deep love of
music. I was supported enormously and encouraged to find the thing I loved and run with it. In a lot of ways,
Truro High helped me to form my identity.”
The Joy Perry Cup is awarded annually to pupils for their loyalty and achievement in the Music Department,
in recognition of this incredible teacher’s work.
Helen Corrigan, Vice Chair of Truro High School Old Girls’ Association, said: “These reunions are so
important for keeping our close-knit school community in touch. We love hearing the exciting stories about
our past pupils achievements and sharing in the memories of times that have perhaps been pushed to the
back of our minds.”
The reunion was organised by Marianne Inskip (nee Petersen), Secretary of Truro High Old Girls’
Association and the school’s Development Officer Fiona Osman.

The end of term brought many goodbyes, not only from our Year 13 and some Year 11 girls, but also from
some highly valued members of staff: Mrs Hanson and Mrs Lamble from the Maths Department; Mr Brand,
from Business Studies; Mr Purchase from ICT; Mrs Blakemore our EAL teacher; Mrs Bradbury our LAMDA
teacher and Mrs Ellison, Head’s Secretary and Registrar. We wish them well for the future and thank them
for all they have done for Truro High School.
