ESA Sentinel Missions
Sentinel-1A & B Radar imaging (SAR) mission for land and
ocean services. 1A launched on 3 April 2014. 1B in 2016.
Sentinel-2A & B Multi-spectral high-resolution imaging
mission for land monitoring. Launch April 2015 and 2017
Sentinel-3 Multi-instrument mission to measure sea-surface
topography, sea- and land-surface temperature, ocean colour
and land colour. Launch 2015 Sentinel 4
Sentinel-4 Atmospheric monitoring from Meteosat Third
Generation-Sounder (MTG-S) satellite in geostationary
orbit. (2018; 2026)
Sentinel-5 Monitor the atmosphere from polar orbit aboard a
MetOp Second Generation satellite. (2019;2027; )
Sentinel-5 Precursor Fill gap between Envisat, in particular
the Sciamachy instrument, and the launch of Sentinel-5. This
mission will be dedicated to atmospheric monitoring. (2015)
Sentinel-6 carries a radar altimeter to measure global seasurface height (Jason follow-on). (2017)

Sentinel 5P
Sentinel 2
To provide high-resolution optical imagery for continuity of
SPOT (2.5m) and Landsat (30m/15m) type data.
290km swath; 13 spectral bands; res: 10m to 60m
Classification: Public
Sentinel 2
•  Global land surface coverage
•  10-day revisit time at equator
•  5-day revisit with 2 satellites
•  (2-3 days at mid latitudes)
•  Capable of providing a range of
vegetation parameters
Classification: Public

Sentinel 1 C-Band SAR
Continuity from ERS 1,2 & Envisat
Sentinel-1 has 4 exclusive imaging modes
with different resolution and coverage:
•  EW: 400km Swath; 25 x 100m res.
•  IW: 250km swath; 5 x 20m res.
•  SM: 80km swath; 5 x 5m res.
•  WV 20x20km vignettes; 5 x 20m res.
But will generally operate in a pre-defined
mode (limited tasking)

Data Access Infrastructure
4 main access routes
•  For Copernicus Core Users
•  For Scientific/Other Users
•  International Agreements Data Hub
•  For National Member States (Collaborative Data Hub)
Mostly with 1-month rolling archive and additional off-line
access on request
Requires simple online self-registration

Conclusion
A revolution in EO is starting:
•  New satellites (20 year availability)
•  New Data Policy (free access)
•  New technologies (processing power,
storage, communications)
Additional opportunities through
UK Collaborative Ground Segment
(e.g. access to near-real-time data).
